in this video we'll briefly discuss what is Verapamil and how it works what it's used for the dose and side effects and contraindications and precautions varapamil is a calcium channel blocker it inhibits movement of calcium ions across cell membrane resulting in depression of mechanical contraction of myocardial and Vascular smooth muscle and depression of impulse formation automaticity and conduction velocity so it is used in the treatment of hypertension and for chronic stable angina or vasospastic angina and for supraventricular tachyarrhythmias barapamil is available as 40 80 and 120 milligrams immediate release tablets and 120 180 and 240 milligrams sustained release tablets and it is also available as injection the usual dose of Verapamil for adults is 40 to 160 milligrams three times per day or 120 to 480 milligrams per day sustained release tablets lower doses are given once daily and larger doses are divided into two doses the maximum dose is 480 milligrams per day Verapamil may cause constipation dizziness and headache flushing and edema change position slowly to minimize orthostatic hypotension avoid driving and other activities requiring mental alertness or that are potentially dangerous until response to medication is known also avoid using OTC medications without first informing the treating physician determine blood pressure and heart rate approximately at the same time each day and at least twice a week particularly at the beginning of therapy include high fiber foods to minimize constipation limit consumption of xanthine containing drinks such as regular coffee tea and cocoa that's all for this video subscribe and click on the Bell icon for more animated medical videos like this one
