Exploring 17 Beaches in Kauai, Hawaii

hello everybody and welcome my name is Ben this is Adventure Theory and I'm going to help you know before you go on today's adventure I'm going to talk about 17 beaches in Kawaii Hawaii that you might want to visit might want to avoid might want to take the kids might want to surf at or just might want to take a beautiful beach walk down for a couple of miles but before we begin I have to point out a very neat state law in Hawaii chapter 115 of the Hawaii revised statutes gives the public a right of access to beaches and other shorelines throughout the state and property owners who own Shoreline access are responsible for maintaining a clear lateral Shoreline access the ACT compared Beach Transit corridors to sidewalks that means some of these beaches might feel a little weird to access but the bottom line is all beach access is required by law check this out we're going to run down 17 beaches in Kawaii Hawaii in alphabetical order the first Beach on our list is allerton's Beach on the South Shore of kwaii near Poipu you park at the end of the road and follow a well-worn trail alongside a golf cart track and it says no trespassing because the first leg of your journey is going to be right behind the golf course but Public Access is allowed the trail will eventually split and you're going to just want to make sure you follow the shoreline which will eventually drop you out at allerton's beach I love this beach it's good for just sitting relaxing doing a little bit of Boogie boarding or body surfing it sits right behind allerton's botanical Gardens so if you want to take a Botanical Garden Tour they offer those but if you just followed the shoreline access Trail you cannot access the private property without paying your admission fee otherwise allerton's Beach is a beautiful little beach again it's got a nice little shore break when the swells are right and it's good for just hanging out and seeing cuz it's gorgeous but I do need to point out that the trail to access the beach can be a little rocky so there may be some scrambling involved so make sure you're good on your feet and a little bit Rowdy before you tackle the trail now we go to number two on our list anahola beach anahola is on the east side of kwaii and it sits just north of Kapaa that's the beach over there you see in the distance but I don't recommend coming to anahola simply because this neighborhood is a Hawaiian homestead's neighborhood which means you have to be of Hawaiian descent to own a home here and since most of the beaches on all of the Hawaiian Islands are pretty crowded or at least heavily visited I respect the neighborhood so that they can have a beach all to themselves but if you want to know what's going on underwater here in on aola here it is it's a pretty shallow bay at least on the side I'm on I would come out here looking for taco which is octopus or slipper Lobster and spiny Lobster and for the most part the snorkeling and free diving out here wasn't that great of course as I'm swimming around I always pick up the fishing lead I find and I really didn't see too much sea life going on in the bay I just found one extra special sight cuz I was lucky this spotted eag eagle ray and what's interesting is usually spotted eagle Rays have a really long tail somehow this one lost its next up anini beach anini beach is a true tourist Beach it's huge it's got a lot of parking there's fields and bathrooms and showers there's even a campsite here so if you're an adventure traveler looking to Camp you could reserve your campsite ahead of time here at anini beach but me personally I always skipped this section cuz it was always so busy I preferred to go around the corner on the back side right around on the backside there's a few parking spots so parking is very limited but I love this little area of the beach it's really shallow so my baby daughter can play but I personally can go dive a nice deep Channel way out there towards where you see the waves breaking but this snorkel Adventure is for a more advanced snorkler you have to make sure you have the proper gear for this like big fins and know what you're doing way out there there's a jagged channel that pokes into the reef but first to get there you have to navigate the shallows which means following the tiny little ditches in the coral so that you're not scraping or bumping up against anything and if you can zigzag and navigate your way through the tiny little Channel [Music] ditches you'll find yourself at the drop of the main Channel this is where it gets deep it goes down to about 20 or 30 ft like I said this is for a more advanced snorkler with the right gear and in fact this isn't so much snorkeling it's more like free diving cuz you're going to need to take that deep breath and go down to the bottom to see what's lurking in the [Music] caves it is a spooky place to swim but if you're into snorkeling and free diving at a more advanced level this is an amazing location I saw a wide variety of wildlife in this Channel and if I'm being perfectly honest I was coming out here pretty much looking for sharks even though I know that sounds dangerous I did really want to get some footage of a shark without getting eaten and I did occasionally follow the channel way out farther than I thought I would near where it was open [Music] water unfortunately I never saw any sharks but I did see another big old spotted eagle ray and as you can see this one still has his tail intact [Music] [Music] as well as other Wildlife there's Turtles a huge population of [Music] turtles on some of my visits into this channel I counted as many as 48 in a half hour dive [Music] and the turtles are friendly they're typically not very skittish so make sure if you're around them you never touch a turtle just float there and enjoy their [Music] presence and when I mentioned poking your head into caves be very careful because some of those caves have [Music] monsters next up on our list donkey Beach donkey beach is on the east side of kawaii just above Kapaa in fact the beach access is right off of the Kap bike path and this beach is just a short walk off the bike path down the bluff to the beach proper but it's kind of a dangerous Beach cuz this area as well as the beach just south of here is widely known for their rip currents we were here on a really calm day in the summer and so we had great access to the beach but two factors of this beach make it really dangerous one the currents and two it's pretty exposed so there's really no shade here when you're down on the sand snorkeling around I did find some great shells at this beach [Music] but otherwise the snorkeling in general was just kind of average or mediocre even wasn't that great I wouldn't say it's worth the risk but if you happen to be cruising the Kapaa bike path donkey Beach is a very seldomly used area so if you're looking to hang out on the beach and have a lot of sunscreen or an umbrella donkey Beach might be a good choice for you but as always remember the ocean is super dangerous when in doubt don't go out if you're not comfortable stick around somewhere with lifeguards cuz there's no lifeguards [Music] here next up on our list Glass Beach Glass Beach is on the west side of kwaii and it's really more of a novelty Beach this isn't somewhere you're going to go swim or just hang out Glass Beach got its name because this area used to be a dump all that glass in the landfill has been slowly eroded over time and become smooth round seal glass so it's a novelty Beach because the beach has so much crushed glass looking at it from afar you wouldn't realize that a huge percentage of the beach is made up of crushed glass look at that big old piece so a lot of people like to come out here and collect seag glass which the locals really really frown on but if you're looking for an interesting novelty Beach to see and say you've been there this is Glass Beach and we got lucky when we we were here we happen to see an endangered Hawaiian monk seal so if you're on your adventures through Hawaii and happen to come across one of these keep a wide distance away don't get within at least 15 or 20 ft cuz these are extremely endangered and you do not want to disturb them at all and it's super duper illegal if you're dumb enough to walk up and try to touch one next up on our list honay Bay honay Bay is a huge Bay on the NorthShore of kauwaii and this is a huge tourist attraction as well there's 7 m of beach Coastline so there's a lot of different space for everybody it's tucked right up against the mountains so it really is your quid essential Hawaiian screen saver level Beach and a lot of activities surfing bodyboarding swimming kaying but just be mindful because Hony can also have pretty bad rip currents so watch for these signs and stay close to the Lifeguard if you're concerned otherwise honay is a crowd favorite and an absolute tourist Beach I do need to point out though don't let these conditions fool you this this is a relatively calm day in the summer in the winter it is the exact opposite and this beach will kill you in a heartbeat if you give it a chance in the winter but in the summer months honay can be an absolutely gorgeous place to swim just watch out for the signs for rip currents and stay near the lifeguards if you're unsure of the ocean [Music] as I said in the winter the NorthShore is absolutely dangerous this is a relatively High Surf day but not anywhere near the highest average surf conditions for Kawaii or any of the Hawaiian Islands the big swells come in on the NorthShore in the winter and can tear you apart and in addition to the swells there's rip currents what we're looking at here is a rip current where waves are receding from the beach and colliding with the incoming waves from the ocean and when they do that they spray up and make a splash like this so if you see peculiar wave activity like this that means there is a tremendous rip current that you cannot fight and what happens if you get caught in a rip current like this it will drag you kicking and screaming out to see and put you right into the meat grinder conditions like this are pretty much for professional Surfers only and even professional Surfers die every year in conditions like this so if you're in kwaii or any of the Hawaiian islands in the winter pretty much just assume you're going to avoid the NorthShore all together when it comes to swimming and Beware of the traffic Kawaii has a terrible infrastructure so odds are you're going to be in traffic wherever it is you're going next on our list is Ka Beach also on the NorthShore at the very very end of the road near the trail head for the world famous kalala Trail the beach access will take you through an active tarot farm and then drop you off at this tiny little beach this is Ka and it is very small in the summer if you get here on a day like this where it's calm it's gorgeous [Music] and if anyone's there recently let me know if this tree is still standing I took this footage in 2020 or 2021 and as you can see it's a very very very small Beach so I imagine it can get extremely crowded I was lucky on this day during Co when there was no one here and it was like swimming in my own personal Oceanic swimming pool next up Kia Beach this was basically my neighborhood Beach so I spent a lot of time here this beach is great for surfing body boarding and body surfing but just like donkey Beach which is just right up the bike path and the road from here Kia can have some terrible and ferocious rip currents so be very careful but if it's on a good day you can get some good body surfing or body boarding in here as well as some good surfing but if you're unsure of the weather or unsure of the water in general stick near the Lifeguard they're going to tell you where it's safe where the rip currents are or aren't but otherwise I loved coming to Kia especially to just sit on the shore break and try to get pictures of the wave tubes and tunnels and like I said do some body surfing and body boarding [Music] [Music] [Applause] next up on our list on the east side is kahili Beach cahil is a familyfriendly beach primarily because it has this beautiful little Lagoon right here where the river empties out into the bay and this is usually always calm and pleasant and shallow for kids on the Oceanside is a pretty well-known surf beach but I didn't typically see many snorkelers or even body boarders at this beach but it does have a lot of beach access and it is an outof thee way just out rural Kawaii great location for a beach hangout lots of trees along the shoreline if you want some shade an adequate amount of parking but it is out of the way so you're going to have to know where you're going if you're going to get here personally I would come here to embrace my inner child because the Lagoon has a really fun rope swing but do not swing at the angle I just swung if you do try your hand at this Rog swing you're going to want to go this way and I say that cuz to my right are some pretty nasty rocks and those rocks are really sharp so be careful if you're coming out [Music] here next up is kihi Beach kihi is another family favorite there's two accesses where I'm standing now is on the bluff of the north entrance overlooking the beach and if you follow the road to the very end it will dead end at the river and I'll show that in a bit there's some good surf breaks on both sides of the bay in fact there's a pretty incredible wedge down there on the south end but only obviously when conditions are permitting khhi has a lot of parking but it is also a locals Beach it's really out of the way pretty remote and Rural but I've never seen the parking lot completely full there's lots of beach access for a lot of people to fit in without crowding each other but if if you walk around to the left where I'm standing to the Riverside you'll find what I came here to do I parked on the north entrance so I'd have access to the river mouth and there is kayaking and standup paddle boarding that a lot of people do here in the river but me personally again I have to feed my inner child so I would walk across the river which is shallow and smooth and gentle not too deep just about waste deep at least on this day in these conditions [Music] and i' weight over here to a hidden rope swing but again it's really shallow so you're not going to do any back flips into this water cuz you might break your neck but who doesn't love swinging off a rope into the water kihi is a fun familyfriendly beach one of my [Music] favorites next on our list lumahai beach lumahai is on the NorthShore just past honay and you park on the very top of the cliff and then walk down the bluff to lumahai but parking is very limited so you're going to want to be careful and have a plan B if this is on your itinerary but lumahai is a gorgeous beach again quid essential Kawaii with a huge Shoreline if you're just looking for a beach hike but me I love jumping off stuff so what I like to do is walk around to the Rocks over on the left if you do find yourself here jumping off the rock do be careful because the rocks can be very sharp in addition to Sharp rocks Vana and sea urchins live in some of these little cracks and caves and you don't want to stick your hand in [Music] there and again this is Northshore so you're only going to have conditions like this during the summer during the winter it is the exact opposite and as I stated the rocks can be very sharp so be careful out [Music] there next on our list is lidgate beach park lidgate is a truly family friendly Beach there's two swimming ponds that are walled in with rocks to keep the Predators out the short one you see right in front of you is for the little little kids then there's a bigger one on the other side that doesn't get any more than 6 ft deep there's a huge Pavilion or two as well as a disc golf course and a playground so this is a great family place and it sits on the east shore of kauwaii right behind the Hilton Hotel there's also some ancient Hawaiian ruins in this area which makes this park extra special these are the actual ruins from the ancient Hawaiians from hundreds if not thousands of years ago and cuz it's Kawaii there's roosters [Music] and in addition to the ruins if you look really carefully you might even spot some petroglyphs that even some locals don't know are here and me I love petroglyphs so this was a neat [Music] find as far as swimming goes in the adult side of the pool well I shouldn't say adult but the deep end which really isn't any more than 600 6 and 1/2 ft deep there is snorkeling to be had but most of the fish live around the Rocks cuz that's just good fish habitat but you never know what you'll see swimming in the middle like this big group of beautiful fish right [Music] here and a few years ago shockingly to some but hilariously to me there was an unexpected visitor inside the lidgate beach park this little baby shark right here it freak a lot of people out but personally I loved it it was just a baby swimming around minding its business so I couldn't resist jumping in there to get some footage of him if anyone's out there and knows if he's still in there put a comment in the comment section and let me know or if you saw [Music] him next on the list mahalu now mahalu is more of an area than a beach specific cuz in kauwaii if you throw a rock that rock will pass through three different named beaches this is on the Southshore near Poipu you can Hike The Cliffs there in the distance and then continue your hike along the beach but it's not really a good swimming beach it's really Rocky and can be rough but if you're in the area be sure to look for the cave just up the creek they do accept donations and they'll take you on a tour through the cave under the hill here and there's some pretty interesting history to this [Music] cave then just Downstream a short walk from the cave you're on the beach at the river mouth and this is where you can decide if you just want to play around here hang out and relax or take the beach walk along the Hawaiian Heritage Trail all the way to the end really it's up to you but again this isn't much of a swimming area because it is so so Rocky there are a few Pockets here and there where the water's turquoise which will indicate it's Sandy but for the most part it's going to be Rocky and when you're looking in the water if it's dark spots well that's rocks and that'll cut you to shreds but if you're a hiker looking for a good long hike you can Hike The mahalu Heritage Trail which will take you all along the cliffs which are spectacular for whale watching in the winter then drop you down on the beach next up moaa beach moaa is a super hidden Rural and remote beach on the northeast side of kwaii there's beach access through this little residential [Music] neighborhood rumor has it this is where the original Gilligan Island was filmed and mulaa is a beautiful little Bay in fact my wife and I were even considering having our wedding here lots of Shoreline access a little stream that drips into the bay which means there's a nice little Lagoon if you're worried about the ocean and you just want to play in the water or you have little kids this little section of the river is a great place for that it's shallow and gentle and [Music] Sandy or you can just follow the coastline either direction if you're looking for a little hike and if you're looking for somewhere to snorkel this Bay has snorkeling but it's kind of peculiar cuz a ton of fresh water sits in this Bay which makes the top layer really murky cuz when the salt water mixes with fresh water it makes it very hazy and oily looking and for some reason it's way more pronounced in this Bay than any other I dove but despite the poor visibility on the top layer if you dive down and get underneath it it pretty much clears up really nice I would say the snorkeling is average and at least adequate but not the best I found on the island but then again when you go underwater you never know what you're going to [Music] see just make sure you know what you're doing if you're going to jump into the open ocean to go [Music] snorkeling next on the list is nucula e Beach nuul e sits right behind the Kawaii Beach Hotel on the east side of kwaii right between LA and Kapaa and as far as swimming beaches go this is not a good swimming beach because it's really really Rocky there is a long Shoreline so if you're just looking to do a beach walk and you're in the area you might want to check it out I came here to take my tiny little baby daughter so she could sit in the sand and play in a relatively safe environment and there is a nice little Lagoon protected by a rock wall right offshore and this was a really great spot to take a tiny little baby to have their first real experience sitting in the ocean and playing with the sand it just so happened that on this day the Portuguese Mana War were coming in in swarm which I did not know when I arrived at the beach until I saw one come floating by and they may seem small but these man of war have a wicked sting and they will ruin your vacation if you get a whole bunch of them on your arm so it was time to take my baby daughter and go find somewhere else and the next Beach on the list is papaa Beach papaa sits on the east shore of kauwaii and it's in a really Rural and remote area the access itself is tucked back in some ranch and neighborhood areas and then there's a fairly large parking lot with a trail if you follow the trail straight from here it'll take you down to the swimming area but we're going to take it to the right so you can see what the beach looks like proper and papaa Beach is a very seldomly used Beach it was very rare for me to find people here and I suppose it's because it's not a very good place to swim directly offshore here is a massive Rock slab where it's only about 2 in deep and covered in sea urchins I suppose if you were looking for a Beach Walk you could follow the beach around towards anahola but what I like to do here was either come spear fishing diving for lobster or to just play around in a hidden little swim spot where I could really embrace my inner child and as I mentioned before when you're looking at the water you want to look for the turquoise sections cuz that means that's Sandy if you see dark sections it means Rocky and where I liked to swim was kind of a checkerboard pattern of rocks and sand but it was just enough sand for me to get my feet wet and have a good time and the walk down to the beach isn't far but it is down a bluff so if you're carrying a heavy load this is definitely not going to be the beach for you but I enjoy papaa just because I could usually have it to myself and just enjoy being out in kauwaii now we're going to head to the end of the road on the west side of kwaii to poly Holly State Park the dirt road that takes you to pulley Holly is dirt and bumpy and washboard and can sometimes be washed out and I've heard if you take your rental car down this road it will void the insurance so make sure you're doing the right thing before you head out towards py Holly and even though it's not very many miles down the dirt road it is about a 45 to 1 hour drive just on the bumpy section cuz you really can't go more than 15 or 20 mph most of the way once you get to the beach section you will be treated to a massive sprawl of wide open sand and this is a very seldom used area probably because there's absolutely no shade except for a few Pavilions up by where you park and pulley Holly sits right on the edge of the Nepali Coast that Cliff side there is where Nepali starts for most of the islands the west side is the dry side very Aid very hot and very dangerous pulley Holly can get crazy rip currents crazy swells and you're so far remote and removed there's not a lot of rescue if you get into trouble so if you're going to head out to pulley Holly just make sure it's a nice clear day like this and be very careful next on the list is Salt Pond Beach Salt Pond beach park is on the west side of kwaii and it is a family favorite there's a big Bay over there for the adults to swim but there is interspersed rocks so be careful but the primary attraction for Salt Pond beach park is this kids pool on the side right here it's a little Lagoon protected by a rock wall so it's a great place for kids to get in the water and get in the ocean and be protected however if you go too far to the right at the end of this rock wall there's a massive rip current that will suck you out to sea luckily Salt Pond has a lifeguard so if you do get into trouble there's someone to help you out just make sure you stay inside the rock so that you don't get caught in that rip current but Salt Pond beach park is a great place for little kids for a reason like this it's protected and safe and absolutely gorgeous [Music] now we head to secret Beach on the east side of kwaii secret Beach is at the very end of a dirt road but it's an easy dirt road to follow and then there's a short walk down the bluff to get to secret Beach you could walk the beach towards the lighthouse on the right or you can do what I do and go to the left but I need to warn you secret Beach is notorious for Taking Lives it is wide open ocean so you're typically getting good swells as well as Rip currents if you follow the beach most of the way to the left you might find a beautiful tide pool like this to soak in but if you're up for more of an adventure in the summertime when the swell is low you can follow the Rocks around the corner to this beautiful little waterfall right here that sits in a little Lagoon but again be very careful about doing this you could not do it in the winter only in the summer and that is only on a calm day secret beach is beautiful it's good for surfing and it's just a great place to get out of the way lastly we have Shipwreck Beach shipwreck has a cool name but it's not that great of a beach because first of all it's really Rocky you can see there a large swath of dark right offshore the beach itself is located on the south side of kauwaii near Poipu right behind all the major hotels there is some body boarding here and some shorebreak surfing but the primary attraction is jumping off The Rock I never jumped off this rock though because it's about a 20t rock and it's only about 8 to 10 ft deep and I do not agree with jumping off tall objects into shallow water lots of injuries are caused here at shipwrecks all in all when you come to Kawaii first and foremost be respectful be polite cuz you are in the hawaiian's backyard find the beach that's right for you and as always when in doubt don't go out [Music] n
