today we're doing a short five to ten minute video on a little short lesson and I'll be doing these every other week on the off weeks that we do the one-hour lesson anyway so today we chose to talk about the word believe believe is probably the cornerstone thinking or word that we think about when we think about a believer or Christianity or Judaism or whatever we have from the biblical aspect of we are gods or Jesus that we believe and that is really an important thing to understand because it's a cornerstone factor in our salvation in a walk or journey with God I really want to talk about this at at a degree where we understand it fully and completely one of the problems with the term believe and we have this written in the New Testament probably over a hundred and seventy five times the word believe actually in a New Testament is pistou all and the word believe in the Old Testament is Amon and the word in the Old Testament online is probably written about Oh 50 times there's more more or less and so I want to show you the words that we translate the top one being of the Greek in the New Testament and the bottom one in the Hebrew to the Old Testament so what we have here these two words we translate to the Lord believe and this is the problem when we look up the word believe in our dictionary and it doesn't matter whether your dictionary is in English or Russian or Romanian or Spanish it's going to give you the same definition so when we see believe we see that the definition is something we understand to be true now the problem is this is a very passive meaning of the word belief which is okay if that's what we want to talk about which is something we understand but when we talked about pursue or online ok these words here which are the actual words in the language that is written in the Bible these are not passive verbs these are active verbs for example the word piss jewel it means to entrust or to commit is something that we act upon to commit to something or we give our life to something we follow something ok and the word online in the Hebrew it has a different meaning but it has all the same verb etre cetera verbage with the same meaning for example it means to foster like a parent or a nurse it means to build up or support to be faithful and true all of these whether we're talking about the hebrew word or the greek word are all active verbs now why that poses a problem is if I think that I for example say the sinner's prayer Jesus forgive me by saying come into my heart etc etc amen and I believe because somebody told me that because I said the prayer that I if I understand God to be true that that in fact saves me that that in fact gives me a relationship with Jesus that cannot be true because the very verbage of what we're talking about in that form is all passive ok when we look at the term to make Jesus Lord of our life let's go to UM for example Romans 10:9 where it says that we believe in our heart and confess with our mouth I think that's the other way around but what it talks about believing in our heart is talking about something we entrust to or commit to okay and in that respect this Jew o is active is something we do so when we commit to something we act upon it's like something we follow okay we look at John 3:16 same thing for God so loved the world he gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him shall ever have everlasting life so something we follow it's like when God gives you [Music] enlightenment or a reveals himself to you or reveals in scripture to you that which you were to do or to follow you were to act upon it if you don't act upon it literally according to the Greek and according to the Hebrew you are not believing now I want a pause there really let you think about that because we've had traditionally a lot of teaching that tells us if we just think it's true or believe it's true or understand that it's true or understanding this real that we are in fact his that we are in fact saved that we are in fact have this relationship with Jesus but that's not according to the actual language of the Bible the actual language of the Bible is somewhat different it tells us that we need to act upon it for example let's say that I have a car and I have a teenager and teenager says to me you know can I borrow your car and I hand my keys over and Mike so I have the keys over and I am trusting that that teenager will not crash my car okay so I'm trusting that that is a passive way of acting upon what we talk call belief now let's say that I hand those keys over to that same teenager but I get into the car at the same time I'm entrusting my life I am committing myself okay to that teenager entrusting myself to that teenager I am I am being faithful to that and therefore because of that I am following I'm acting upon something which is a not a passive but an active way of believing in that respect I am believing according to the Scriptures very different understanding when we look at the Durham believe actually what we look at in the end result is at this Jewel and Arman results in this obedience you see to believe is to obey is to follow follow the teachings of Jesus to act upon to commit to a trust it's the foster to build up to grow to support to be faithful in these definitions there these comments have toward the definition of miss Jewel and Amon we have to consider that the Bible is written in this language the language that calls us to obedience calls us to the very structure that we need to follow the teachings of the Bible when we are doing this then we are truly believing and we're truly believing according to what God has called us to in the very scriptures and the very words and whatever excuse me that he has for us in the Bible so when we want to say that we believe in Jesus think about it from now on am i faithful to him am i committed to him do I entrust my life to him do I follow the teachings that he has given me am i following the revelation whether it's through scripture or anywhere else that God has given to me am i following that revelation to obey Him in that we find the word believe in this jewel or almond which is truly what we need to understand it's true thank you for joining me today and we will talk to you again you have a wonderful and blessed day thank you
