so I was talking to someone the other day about if the electric car is actually the future of cars guaranteed and I don't know if that's actually necessarily definitely true but what I do know to be true is the electric motor specifically well that's coming it's actually basically everywhere so much everywhere that even the Porsche 911 can't resist this is the newest 992.2 generation Carrera 4 GTS and you can see that badge down here at the bottom it says T hybrid because there is an electric motor in the turbo specifically now I was very very interested in testing this new generation specifically because Porsche does not take changes to the 911 lightly anything that they do will be scrutinized and analyzed to the nth degree because it's an iconic car and making the first hybrid version of it is a huge deal so they must have a really good reason to and turns out I agree really good reason it's not the typical hybrid though some people would argue you don't even really need to call it a hybrid just because there are electric motors and a bit of a new battery we'll get to that though the basics though are this is still a 911 carrera 4 GTS is a all-wheel drive GTS and it's really expensive priced as tested just under $200,000 for a 3.6 6 L re-engineered flat 6 with that electric motor we talked about a 1.9 kWh battery now like I said Porsche does not make a whole ton of changes to the 911 without really good reasons so from the outside it's going to mostly look like the same car as last year and the year before and the generation before there are very few subtle changes that they actually decide to make for example the easiest way to know you're driving next to a 992.2 is these new shark fin gills in the front here i actually didn't like the way these look at first in pictures they don't look nearly as good but something about like a lot of this matte plastic at the bottom versus the glossy and these are also active so they open up more in sport plus mode and when the brakes need cooling and you need more air flow and then they'll close like this in regular driving i kind of grown to like it it looks really good this is the whole front diffuser not bad on the side obviously not a whole lot different other than the T hybrid badge that I keep pointing out on both sides still some good thick tires and 21in and 20in wheels and then this is the back this one I I don't like that they have this uh this fake exhaust tip see how it's disconnected from the actual exhaust i mean you wouldn't know that unless you walk right up to the car but I feel like on a $200,000 Porsche like you could connect those I guess aside from that though very normal looking back of a 992 generation car that is also active arrow that spoiler goes up and down okay it's still a 911 so all right then t- hybrid what does that mean this is the first hybrid 911 which is a huge deal what does that actually mean for this car what is included well there's the 1.9 kWh battery and there's the two electric motors that I talked about in total it only adds maybe 50 kg to the entire weight of the car so not that much virtually undetectable while driving and it doesn't even really change the packaging it is a reworked engine to get the electric parts in there uh but the front trunk for example is still the exact same size so in a 911 where you want that practicality the battery is actually right back here if I take this plastic cover off should I take it off all right I'll take it off i'll show you where the battery is take this whole thing off there's the 1.9 kow battery so the flirt trunk that lives up here is still the same size and it's great in fact the packaging is so good I think if you just put a regular person in this car and sat them down and told them to drive it they would not be able to tell that it's a hybrid it's not a plug-in hybrid and at no point do the electric motors ever drive the car there is no electric mode but what they've done with this is very clever so without doing a whole history lesson basically turbos are very common are very popular in these quick cars and you probably also know that turbos come with some amount of lag so you'll put your foot down and then that boost pressure will have to build up until the turbo is ready to go and is giving you the most boost now putting an electric motor right in the front and keeping it spun up constantly will actually be able to keep the air flowing quickly and keep it always on boost all the time so what they did with this car is instead of having twin turbos like the Turbo S for example where you can hopefully have a smaller turbo that builds boost pressure faster this is one huge turbo but because the electric motors keeping it spun up all the time it's basically always ready to be right on boost and as you drive there's essentially no turbo lag it's kind of amazing knowing how big the single turbo is in this car and driving this around and feeling like you're always getting a responsive pedal all the time like a naturally aspirated engine is great it's awesome you wouldn't necessarily know that that's because of the turbo or because of the electric motor but it is and it's hugely awesome so I I definitely appreciate that now here's the other uh small benefit you know this is the 992.2 too so this is the fully digital tachometer up here and there's also sadly uh a generic start engine button instead of you know the remember the turnkey start the the heritage remember that anyway you press this and and and take a listen to how it sounds when you press this [Music] i don't know if you caught that it's kind of hard to catch on this mic but there was no ignition sound the engine just spun up and just started right away because of that other electric motor no crank to start the electric motor just starts the engine and uh this totally reworked engine actually sounds a little bit different i I'm going to try to get a good clip of uh the engine note so you can hear it it's kind of nice i think it kind of sounds similar to the V8 from the Cayenne GTS actually uh so it's always got this low rumble and as you drive this car because of the turbos because you're always essentially given almost instant boost you mostly drive around under 2500 2,000 RPM and it's happy to sit under 2,000 RPM those other twin turbo cars you know you sit around in normal mode and they feel almost kind of bogged down if you read or watch any other reviews people instantly flip to sport mode so they can drive around at higher RPM this car is happy to sit at lower RPM and still feel responsive which is awesome so the conclusion that I've come to after driving and living with this car for a couple days now is um I get why Porsche did it it is that engineering masterpiece that the 911 always is this is the most responsive single turbo setup ever in a production car and it's so good of a hybrid that you can drive it and not really ever know it's a hybrid of course there is also the emissions reasons why they've done this of course you'll also probably get slightly better gas mileage from driving around at lower RPMs but as you drive the 911 the GTS the character of the GTS is still very much alive it is still confidence inspiring and planted rear wheel steer is standard it is still incredibly wellb built it is still super practical all the space in the back the front trunk is the same size the packaging is great i love black wheels i don't even think you need the carbon ceramics i think these brakes which are still drilled are fantastic it's just a slightly new insides which I would argue have basically no downside the slightly heavier weight is basically undetectable and uh I think it leaves the only downside of this car really being that it is so freaking expensive the prices keep going up for 911s and people keep buying them because they're still great cars but other than that I think they've done uh surprise an incredible job i uh I still prefer the older uh 992.1 some things about it and this is this is me feeling like I'm becoming that old person who I always thought it was weird that they prefer the older Porsches but now I'm immediately that guy i like the turnkey ignition start as small as that is i like the analog tachometer as small as that was uh but if you're if you're in the market for a new 911 yeah this thing's great obviously thanks for watching catch you in the next one peace
