Shower Valve Installation Guide

oh Another Day in Paradise I wasn't born that special Mak me nervous I don't even know if that's a word it might be a madeup word another day of Plumbing all right here we go all right here we are today I'm Dave the plumber we Plum today I'm here to do an install for a rough in for a shower valve voila we're at a customer's house he's in the phases of remodeling so here we go let's get going let's walk in and check out the area and see what we have to work [Music] with all right here we are in the customer's house as you can see it's all been gutted it's ready for Electrical Plumbing and here we are for our shower inst stall let's see what we have to work with over here all right so here we are this is the location of our shower valve install this is going to be a mud pan I've been informed by the actual customer let's see what we need uh we got your typical 16 or 20 on centers I haven't measured it yet with the tape but I'll will in a minute to get our exact measurements looks like we need our standard blocking and uh we got to hold right for up top for the shower head so let's go ahead and get everything we need and let's get this going we have our show valve have our fittings oh these are the good ones here's our hold right for our shower head all right here we go this is an addition on an existing house in this remodel so first thing we need to do is let's go ahead and get our measurements for our backing and our blocking and our hold right for the shower head come here Mr tape measure there we go standard hype for a rough end of a shower valve in most applications we're going to be about 4T off the ground boom let's go up and get our 80 for our Riser shower head do over here 80 there all right get our measurement in between the studs for our backing 14 and 3/4 14 and 3/4 all right that's for our hold right up top for the showerhead stub and out all right let's rock and roll all right let's get the backing for our shower head and our stub out right now today I'm going to use what's called a hold right hold rights are nice because they're adjustable to whatever framers are not always on point so this is nice it's adjustable I mean you could have studs this far apart and use it and whatever and it's just phenomenal it's user friendly oh there's no way it never happens that way it's just coming out perfect nice all right so we're going to fold the ends over boom boom now to make sure that our shower head show valver lined up accordingly we're going to get the tape measure measure the depth of our 2x4 which is going to be an inch and a half come to our 80 in Mark which is an inch and a half on both sides all right there's our inch and a half mark let's get our hold right get a couple of screws there's my mark there's the back in there all right looks good we'll tack one here back on on the other side all right let's get our level make sure we're level before we tack it into place they call it Plumbing for a reason you need to be level all right two more screws all right now we got our backing in let's go ahead and prep our shower valve for installation okay have one shower valve the standard rough in it's where you're hot and cold so we don't mix let's get our fittings all right what do we have here we have male so we are going to need female there's one female 90 straight for Riser showerhead and one more 90 here are my shark bite fittings that I'm going to to be using to install our shower valve today here's our shower valve uh this one's fairly common one it doesn't have the actual cartridge in it because we're doing a rough end purpose here's our Black guide this is what's used to actually measure the depth of your finished work and where the shower valve needs to be so if you look up here we're pretty much close and we're right there and we're roughed in we're within the Black guide means so we're good there I have two shark bite 90s you can see the hex here so we can get our adjustable wrench or a pair of groov and tongue PL Chanel loocks what have you on there to tighten this here is for our Riser this is a female half in female by push to connect shark bike fitting this is called a drop beard 90 this is where our shower Riser and shower head will be uh coming out of the wall so let's go ahead pop this off CU we don't need this for insulation now really it's a plumber's preference some of us use teflon some of us use pipe dope some of us use Teflon and pipe dopee because pipe dope will help lubricate it when you're tightening your fittings on today I don't have my pipe dope with me so we're just going to use a Teflon which is perfectly fine and we'll do the job what's nice about Teflon is it acts as a spacer so it really does a good job of sealing remember to wrap in the direction that you're going to be tightening your fitting onto is not to unravel your Teflon tape about six seven wraps are good five six seven boom squeeze it on there make sure none of it's in there go ahead two more to go so we're doing a clockwise motion most standard American threads in the United States your threads are righty tidy and Lefty Loosey so I am wrapping in the direction the fitting is going to screw on if I were to wrap the tape the other way and I screwed this way it would unravel the tape and it would never seal all right now that that's done we will proceed to attach our fittings now you can use two pair of Chanel loocks you can use adjustables whatever your preference is these are actually called tongue and groove pliers the real actual tradesman's term for those here's a pair of adjustable wrenches there you go righty tidy next and TI it there booah now let's get our riser for sherad on here what's nice about these shark bite fittings is that it saves time and is more coste effective even though the fitting might be more expensive the time you save cuz time is money and valuable is a lot lot quicker as you can see it's not taking as much time at all to prep this shower valve for install all right there we go we go now let's install our shower valve let's go ahead and get our Mark through the center of our valve which I think earlier was 20 and2 eyeball it okay little Center Line all right there we go now my valve is level and I can proceed to finish tiing it down all right there you go now next step is go ahead and let's drill our Holes in the Floor and get our water line stubbed up through the floor and attached to the shower valve what I'm going to do just for aesthetic reasons so it makes the inspector know the plumber cared measure over to the center here got 4 and 3/4 Mark 4 and 3/4 let's see what this side is this one's going to be 5 and A4 or 5 and an eigh rather there's our marks now we can either go towards the front of the 2x4 or the back or we can go dead center regardless there'll be nail guards to ensure that our pipe does not get hit okay now let's go ahead and get our paddle bit which is hiding in here somewhere there it it is and get our holes drill through the bottom plate and then go get our pipe all right now our holes are ready go ahead and get our pipe let's get our pipe run got some pipe let's get to going all right here we have our pipe before we get going what I like to do is we have a tool here the shark bitee provides is I like to deur the pipe because what that does is it actually makes the pipe edges smooth after cutting it so we do not tear the O-ring that's on the inside of the shark bike fitting and also it makes sure it removes any debris to clogging up the shower valve the cartridge or the shower ahead and causing a restriction so let's go ahead and debur our pipe right now on/ in now per shark bites specifications you can also go visit sharkbite.com it will also show you as well for/ in we need to have 1 in of the pipe to fully be inserted into this fitting so it seats properly and less chance for leaks go ahead and take this let's get our Mark and there's our 1in Mark we're going to go ahead now that we have marked our pipe we are deburred we're going to go ahead head and put our pipe through the floor go ahead and push and you can see our 1in Mark there we are fully recessed okay now let's do our cold line here we go to debur and again the purpose for deburring is so no debris gets caught up in the cartridge or in the shower head or in the poble drinking water system and everything works properly I like this tool all right now let's get our measurement 1 in again go to sharkbite.com just to double check me and make sure for/ inch we are 1 in per manufacturer's scope all right that we've done that and here we go remember now hot on the left cold on the right all right we are recessed and there you go voila hot and cold we're ready to go now for the shower Riser the shower head shark bite has some really nice tools especially for cutting peegs all right lot straighter let's get our debur one in one in and we are going to press on voila we are now 1in depth now here we can tell in the fitting our 1in Mark is right in there so with tape measure to the top you can see we have 1 in so what I'm going to do is hold my Riser here line it up eyeball it being a plumber you're supposed to have a pretty decent eye make my mark get my peex Cutters cut and voila one inch all right now that we have our Mark and voila there we go all right now per code even though it's not en forc whenever installing your shower head or your drop de 90 by code you are supposed to use some kind of galvanized Chrome SC screw so there's no [Music] rusting now that we have that done now we need to go ahead and put our stub out and the reason and the purpose for the stub out is so that when the drywall is installed or dur rock or whatever product they're using behind the shower they're able to mark their stuff and place it right over and also uh helps with the tile guy for his tile work as well all right here we are again with Teflon the whole purpose of this is for testing to pass inspection and you're roughing in the walls and also to make sure that when you pressurize the system there are no leaks from the shower valve up to the shower ahead all right now that we have our shower installed let me explain a couple things you see everything's good and tight everything's lined up in line and when installing your shower valve also ensure when most cases in a remodel the drain will already be there but your shower head your shower valve and your shower drain should all line up and be in unison um we've saved time today and time is money but let's go ahead and put our guard back on and here's our guard which also helps to protect the shower valve when drywallers dur a rock tiem are doing whatever that is that they need to [Music] do there we go boom boom on this particular shave Val they provide this so during the rough in Phase when the rest of the house cuz this is an addition when the rest of the house is being in use you won't have any mixing to cause your hot cold water to come through and mixed and just put lukewarm water throughout the house all right there we go let's go ahead and bend our tabs over well today we have installed single handle shower valve everything is secure and we'll be under pressure when the tile people come put their dur Rock float everything and put their tile on and all that we'll be back to trim this actual shower fixture out but man look how fast and easy that was that was awfully quick that saved me a lot of time until we come back to trim it out we'll see you then hi welcome back today we're going to install trim kit this is not the same house we were at last time but this customer needed a trim kit so I felt why not go ahead and show you how we're going to put the trim kit on that's a plumers razor let's see what we got here you can see the brand that they got is the same as the last valve we had a lot of times people get confused cuz there's some Universal kits that'll work some that won't but we have the light same likeness same valve as our last install in the other house so basically we're just wrapping up and showing you the trim kit that we're putting on we got our handle okay and we have our screws spacer o-ring oh this is a single handle shower valve just like the same one we put at the other house the way the cartridges work if I were to turn the water off and remove this silver ring here this cartridge will pull out and this would be your replacement cartridge so this is what it actually looks like in the body of the valve inside the shower valve you can see two holes on the cartridge you'll have it marked H for hot that's about it on this one H for hot so you would put the cartridge in get your ring and you do not have to use a wrench to tighten these down because of the O-ring that's on the cartridge you just hand tighten them and snug them so basically that's how you would do that as you can see identical and also on these cartridges which are designed to be posy temp in other words anti-cold if somebody were taking a shower and somebody turned on a faucet or flushed a toilet somewhere else the mixing valve or the valve here has an anti- scald in it balancing valve that will keep the water hot and cold of equal pressure without anybody getting burnt let's go ahead and put our scussion on or beauty ring or what have you just go ahead and push on just like that now you'll notice inside the valve there's two screw points and they should line up exactly with your holes so we're going to go ahead and put this on let's level that out a little okay let's go fishing and here we go this is the fun part finding oh did I get lucky oh wow no way that's a first all right get your six and one or Philips head screwdriver tighten these down when you're tightening these screws kind of go back and forth like tightening a tire or lug nuts on a wheel on a tire let's go back and forth all right let's go ahead and get the handle place that in and if you look on the inside you can see the groove the hole so line it up with your cartridge since we're in the off position and I know the handle's supposed to be this way here it is boom boom again you don't have to overtighten anything really just kind of a little snug Plumbing is all about feeling touch you don't want to overtighten things in plumbing if you do it makes for a bad day sometimes and you'll never get whatever you're trying to fix to stop leaking cover plate and trim now this shower head comes with a rubber gasket inside but because of the Restriction the water saving device that's behind the rubber gasket and the pressure that'll build up I don't really feel and I've never had much luck with that rubber gasket truly sealing these showerheads completely so we're going to take a little Teflon tape to [Music] assist all right Ton's on whenever working on a shower valve or anything to that effect probably a good idea to turn the water off just in case so when you're taking the handle off you don't take a shower anyway keep everything off and then you can turn the water back on and check for leaks whenever working with a finished product such as this you want to be careful not to scratch it because it scares very easily and it can be damaged very easily so if you look at these two wrenches here you'll see that one has teeth and one of them does not so we're going ahead and use these or you can use a adjustable wrench if you'd like whichever is easier whatever you have handy and we're going to take this and clockwise screw the shower head on again in plumbing you don't need to overtighten and really put a super grip on it all right here we go all right and there's our install okay thank you for being with us for direct links to the products we use in our install please look at the description below and we hope to see you again thank you [Music]
