Overview
This lecture explains the step-by-step procedure to safely start and synchronize a generator on board a ship, including key checks and synchronization process.
Preparation Before Starting the Generator
- Identify the standby generator to be started.
- Ensure diesel inlet and outlet valves are open.
- Check the lube oil level at the sump tank.
- Set the control handle to the stop position and selector switch to engine.
- Open the test cap or indicator valve.
- Open the flywheel cover and manually turn the flywheel 2-3 times.
- Lubricate and exercise the fuel pump.
Starting the Generator
- Perform air blow by pressing the start button for 2-3 seconds.
- Close the test cap or indicator valve after air blow.
- Move the handle to the run position.
- Start the generator by pressing the start button for 2-3 seconds.
- Return the selector switch to the remote position.
- Check for abnormalities, leakages, or unusual parameter readings.
Synchronizing the Generator
- Understand that centralizing the change involves two types: power running (service) and standby.
- Remove the standby by using the centroscope (synchronoscope) on the generator.
- Observe the rotation of the synchronoscope; it should rotate clockwise and slowly.
- Adjust the frequency so the incoming generator’s frequency is slightly higher than the running one.
- Close the circuit breaker when the synchronoscope pointer is between 11 and 12 o’clock.
- Perform fine adjustments as needed for synchronization.
Key Terms & Definitions
- Generator — A machine that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy.
- Synchronoscope — Device used to match the phase and frequency of a generator to another source before connecting.
- Sump Tank — Reservoir that holds lubricating oil for the engine.
- Circuit Breaker — Switch that safely connects or disconnects the generator from the electrical system.
Action Items / Next Steps
- Practice identifying and checking generator components onboard.
- Review the synchronization procedure before attempting it in real operations.
