Overview
- PureWick is a new external female catheter.
- Purpose: To help manage urinary incontinence without invasive procedures.
Criteria for Use
- Eligibility:
- Not suitable for patients with incontinence of stool.
- Skin must be intact; not suitable for patients with red, irritated, or non-intact skin.
- Not suitable for patients who are confused or move around frequently.
How it Works
- Mechanism:
- Urine is collected in a wick and then sucked into a disposal system using wall suction.
- Quick suction: 50ccs in a few seconds.
- Patient Experience:
- Patients do not feel suction, only a breeze.
- Placement is stable between the labia and gluteus.
- Can be secured with mesh underwear if needed.
Placement and Use
- Positioning:
- Use anatomy for placement: between labia and gluteus.
- Secure placement is crucial, especially for smaller individuals.
- For larger patients, closing legs usually maintains stability.
Maintenance and Documentation
- Cleaning:
- Clean the area with wipes before placement.
- Documentation:
- Chart under the external condom catheter area.
- Change the device once per shift or every 12 hours.
- Assess skin integrity regularly.
Troubleshooting
- Suction Issues:
- Set suction between 60 and 80.
- Check placement if suction is inadequate.
Additional Information
Note: Always ensure patient’s skin condition is assessed and documented regularly to ensure suitability for using the PureWick system. Proper training and adherence to guidelines is essential for effective use.
