MLA Format Guide for Google Docs

Setting Up the Document

Font Selection

  • Use Times New Roman, 12 pt font.

Header

  • Include your last name and page number.
  • Steps to create a header:
    1. Click on the top of the page to open the header.
    2. Set font to Times New Roman, 12 pt.
    3. Right-align the header.
    4. Type your last name.
    5. Go to Insert > Page numbers for page placement.

Margins

  • Go to File > Page setup.
  • Set margins to 1 inch (2.54 cm).
  • Check that margins are set correctly (default is usually 1 inch).

Line Spacing

  • Set the entire document to double spacing.
  • Click the line spacing icon and select double.
  • If "remove space after paragraph" appears, click on it.

MLA Heading

  • Align text to the left.
  • Include the following on separate lines:
    • Your name
    • Professor's name
    • Course name
    • Due date
  • Press ENTER to start typing your title.
  • Title formatting:
    • Keep it simple and classy.
    • No bold or underline.
    • Capitalize major words, except for small words (articles, conjunctions, prepositions).

Body Text Formatting

  • Body text should be left-aligned.
  • Indent the first sentence of each paragraph:
    • Adjust the ruler at the top of the document:
      • Drag the blue rectangle to 1 inch (or 1.27 cm).

Works Cited Page

  • Start on a new page:
    • Click Insert > Break > Page break.
  • Title "Works Cited" should be center-aligned.
  • Sort citations alphabetically.
  • Use a free MLA citation generator for formatting sources.
  • For citations longer than one line, use hanging indents:
    • Pull the arrow on the ruler to 0.5 inch, move the rectangle back to 0.
