Introduction to Gases
Overview
What is a Gas?
Gases are one of the four fundamental states of matter, consisting of particles that have neither a defined volume nor shape.
Particles in a gas move freely and are well separated with no regular arrangement.
Importance of Studying Gases
Understanding gases is crucial for explaining natural phenomena and for practical applications in industries like chemical manufacturing, energy production, and environmental science.
Characteristics of Gases
Gases expand to fill their containers.
They exert pressure on the walls of a container.
Gases have low densities compared to solids and liquids.
They are compressible, meaning they can be compacted into a smaller volume.
Gases on the Periodic Table
Many elements exist as gases at room temperature, including noble gases and others like oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen.
Molecular Gases
Molecular gases are composed of two or more atoms bonded together.
These include diatomic molecules such as O2, N2, and H2.
