yes I am is anybody going to be watching tonight one day until the biggest moment of the presidential race the stage is set for what is sure to be a history-making night in Philadelphia as kamla Harris and Donald Trump prepare to go head-to-head for the first and perhaps only time before voters Nationwide head to the polls in November our reporters are covering the candidates and the issues from immigration to economy and more and the fight for control of Congress plus the Wildfire emergency in Southern California Flames burning across more than 20,000 Acres thousands of people forced from their homes several large fires burning in the region were there on the fire line and our goal is to apply steady pressure and wearing Mr couch down the Urgent Manhunt for a highway shooter along Interstate 75 in Kentucky several people shot and wounded schools in the area cancelled law enforcement officials tell ABC News the gun was bought the day of the shooting and more details on the state of the search but it's all about Harrison Trump and the stakes could not be higher as we go into just the final hours before their debate we're live from the Constitution Center in Philadelphia as our special coverage of the countdown to the presidential debate kicks off good evening everyone I'm lindsy Davis thanks so much for streaming with us here in Philadelphia at the national Constitution Center where we are just 24 hours away from that major debate between Donald Trump and K Harris Harris arriving in the Battleground state of Pennsylvania short time ago before her first face off with Trump we're covering all angles of the debate tonight and much more including developments with Princess Kate's Health as she battles cancer issuing a special message to the world this evening the first words from the mother of the Georgia school shooting her emotional words to the country and remembering an icon legendary Hollywood star and Trailblazer Edward Earl Jones dead at 93 we look back at The Life and Legacy of the celebrated actor but the big news of the night the countdown to the first and perhaps only presidential debate between kamla Harris and Donald Trump which happens In This Very Room in just over 24 hours from now Vice President Harris and former president Trump will meet on this very stage and their first ever face-to-face encounter with the latest polls showing the two locked in a virtual Dead Heat Harris arrived in Philadelphia a short time ago as she looks to make her debut on the presidential debate stage for trump it will be his seventh Showdown it will undoubtedly be a rare chance for either candidate to shape the November election with all eyes here on the national Constitution Center in Philadelphia playing host to yet another major historic moment that could help decide the 2024 election as some states like North Carolina already send absentee ballots to voters we're bringing you live team coverage ahead of the high stakes debate and before we give you the glimpse of the debate stage we kick things off with our chief White House correspondent Mary Bruce here in Philadelphia tonight with just 24 hours to go until their highly anticipated Showdown vice president kamla Harris setting off for Philadelphia where tomorrow for the first time she will come face to face with former president Donald Trump how are you feeling how are you feeling in a new radio interview Harris says she's ready for whatever Trump throws her way there's no floor for him in terms of how low he will go and um and we should be prepared for that we should be prepared for the fact that he is not burdened by telling the truth for days now the vice president has been hunkered down in this Pittsburgh Hotel intensely preparing her team even building a stage with full TV lighting to hold mock debates Harris leaning on several advisers who helped prep Hillary Clinton for her 2016 debate against Trump including one who played the role of the former president in rehearsals but Harris also taking breaks to get out in this critical state in a Pittsburgh Spice Shop greeting one voter who was in tears come here what is that what is that about what is that about I think you understand I'm pretty sure you know it's going to be good we're going to be good we're going to be fine Harris perhaps previewing her message for the debate look it's time to turn the page on the divisiveness um it's time to bring our country together try a new way forward while Harris has been largely off the trail since Thursday Trump over the weekend holding a rally in Battleground with conon she will be the worst president and Trump is never wrong I am never ever wrong the former president trying to set expectations is anybody going to be [Music] watching and spin the debate before it even happens you know if I destroy her in the debate they'll say Trump suffered a humiliating defeat tonight no matter what Mary Bruce joins us now Mary I know you've been talking your sources in the Harris campaign what's her strategy heading into this debate well Lindsay Harris is certainly an experienced debater but her campaign is quick to note that this is fundamentally different tomorrow will be Donald Trump's seventh presidential debate it will be KLA Harris's first and her goal here tomorrow night is to really highlight her positions on the issues and then pivot to put the spotlight firmly on Trump to remind voters of his record to counter what the campaign describes As Trump Amnesia among voters and yes she will certainly try to get under Donald Trump's skin the challenge Lindsay is for her to bait him without being baited herself we'll see what happens in just about 24 hours from now Mary Bruce thanks so much now to ABC's senior Congressional correspondent Rachel Scott also in Philadelphia tonight and Rachel president Trump always says that he's not one for formal debate prep but your sources have been telling you that he is preparing yes Lindsay he's certainly not doing any of those mock debates that vice president kamla Harris is doing but I'm told that the former president is taking this very seriously he knows how consequential this debate this moment could be I'm told the former president has held nearly half a dozen policy informal sessions with his advisers including with former congresswoman Tulsi gabard who we all remember challenged Harris on the debate stage back in 2019 also involved in his debate prep is Congressman Matt Gates now we are told that Gates is firing off questions at him on some of the tougher issues like his stance on abortion also his legal troubles sources also tell me that Trump has been briefed on Harris's past debates and that includes the debate with Trump's own former vice president Mike Pence there was that notable exchange on the debate stage where Pence tried to interrupt Harris and Harris shut him down saying I'm speaking Trump has privately told allies he won't let that happen to him tomorrow night Lindsay all right Rachel Scott our thanks to you as always polling has been consistent since the start of the year with two major issues standing above the rest for voters Nationwide immigration and the economy we'll get to the economy in just a few moments but first it's the issue of immigration and the border that continues to Garner the attention of both candidates on the campaign Trail ABC's Maria vial has more for us from Texas and Maria what is the state of immigration in the Border as the candidates prepare to hit the debate stage tomorrow night well you know Lindsay that is a really great question especially leading up to the debate as of right now we have continued to hear the former president talk a lot about immigration he talks a lot about the flow of migrants into the United States and more importantly he talks about where they are coming from right we've heard prisons we we've also heard mental institutions uh We've also o heard him talk a lot about missing children and how they've gotten lost in the court system and how they are more likely dead or they are they have been trafficked or they are a part of some sort of criminal activity uh let's be very clear uh when he says these things they are not statements of fact uh they are not uh backed up by reports or statistics a lot of this is again as we've talked about before is is to really rile up a particular base of Voters and get them to come out to the polls and vote out of fear of what may happening in their backyards but but as of right now we do know that encounters have continued to decrease over the last 3 months right after we saw President Biden uh put that uh executive order into place basically shutting down the border between ports of Entry uh and since then we've also seen some new Asylum restrictions being put in place again all of this leading to a decrease Harris's Camp has continued to say that her work on root causes of migration is the reason for a lot of this or at least part of the reason uh obviously we don't have a whole lot of statistics on that and in fact critics have said if this was where the administration was going to go why didn't we do this sooner how is it possible that all of this decrease all of this success now on the immigration level is now coming just a few months away from the election Mara our thanks to you as always it's all about the economy it's been a common refrain when discussing elections going back for decades and this November as voters feel squeezed by inflation and stagnant wages that refrain is expected to ring true for yet another presidential election season for more on all things economy we joined by Abc's Elizabeth schy from Washington Elizabeth give us a lay of the land on on where the economy is now as the candidates find themselves in crunch mode just before the debate well Lindsay and this really is a pivotal moment for the American economy which we know is the number one issue for so many voters the key question right now is if the US can achieve that coveted so-called soft Landing in other words can the economy successfully nav into a time of lower inflation lower prices that you pay every day for products and services without crashing into a recession and there are some promising signs here inflation peaked at 9% back in June 2022 now it's hovering at just under 3% that means the prices they're still going up but they're not going up by nearly as much and another good sign Americans wages on average have now been increasing faster than inflation for more than a year so those higher paychecks they can help absorb some of that sticker shock that you would feel like at the grocery store this does help explain why some companies like Walmart which is really considered a bellweather of consumer spending in the economy they are optimistic right now they say that Shoppers are trying to hunt down a good deal but they are still out spending at a pretty solid Pace Lindsay and what are some of the warning signs in the economy right now so you know if we're thinking about the American economy as an airplane that's trying to land in that sweet spot there are clearly some headwinds so one of them is housing rent prices are stubbornly high we have seen home prices across the us at record levels and higher mortgage rates have made buying a house even more unaffordable the other warning sign really is the jobs Market the unemployment rate now at 4.2% that's still a historically low number but you can see there on that chart it is ticking up so what that means it is harder to get a job now and companies are not hiring as much as they were even at the start of the year or a couple years back we have seen this in the stock market investors are worried that hiring could start to slow down even more dramatically but the bottom line is that the S&P 500 that's when you see in most Americans retirement accounts or 401K accounts that is still up Lindsay and impressive about 15% so far this year so a silver lining when you're at least thinking about the stock market and some of that near-term uncertainty too so Elizabeth ultimately how much is the economy about the next president and and how much does it fall with a Federal Reserve which oversees large parts of the economy you know the next president certainly will set the stage when comes to economic priorities and the agenda but what we have seen is a lot of those policies need approval from Congress and in a gridlocked congress the Federal Reserve has taken on an outsized importance in the economy so what's happened is that the Federal Reserve has really taken on this fight against inflation it's done that by making it more expensive to borrow money so that means higher costs if you're trying to pay off credit card debt take out a mortgage get an auto loan the FED is expected to lower those costs next week for the first time in four years that would make it a little bit less expensive to borrow money so ultimately the the path that the FED chooses will be critical for the economy over the next couple of months and going into next year the president does have one role in that though Lindsay that the the Pres the next president regardless of who it is will ultimately decide who should be the leader of the FED when the current fed shars term does expire in 2026 Lindsay economy top of mind for so many Americans Elizabeth schully our thanks to you and make sure to tune in tomorrow night for our special coverage of the president presential debate starting at 7:00 p.m. Eastern when Whit Johnson anchors from right here in Philadelphia followed by our political Powerhouse round table at 8:00 p.m. and of course that all important debate I'll be moderating alongside David mure at 900 P pm. Eastern right here on ABC News live now to the Urgent Manhunt for a highway sniper suspect who wounded five people in ky's I75 Saturday today many schools are closed and people are urged to stay police search for 32-year-old Joseph couch thought to be hiding in this thick dense forest this is thousands and thousands of of Acres it's kind of like a jungle Couch's considered armed and dangerous face and another in the arm police say this is Couch's vehicle recovered near the attack and they say they discovered an AR-15 style assault rifle close by in the woods and Pierre Thomas joins us now Pier what else are authorities learning about the suspect's weapon well police say he purchased that assault rifle the same day as the attack along with more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition and police worried that he may have access to other weapons as well Lindsay pure Thomas for us our thanks you as always next tonight a police officer involved in the arrest of Miami Dolphin star Tyreek Hill is now on administrative Duty Hill pulled over and placed in handcuffs just hours before playing in the first game of the season the incident captured on video Victor Endo reports in from Florida tonight one of these four officers seen handcuffing Miami Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill has been placed on administrative leave Hills seemed face first on the pavement detained just a block from the stadium police citing argu arguably the best wide receiver in football for careless driving and a seat belt violation according to ESPN it happened hours before the season opener Sunday get out of the car investigation hours ago the police Union that represents those officers claiming Hill was not Cooperative the NF B Star was eventually released going on to score this electric 80 yard touchdown after the game Hill insisted he wasn't speeding and that he didn't say anything offensive to police I'm still trying to put it all together um so I'm not going to give you um a verion that I still don't know what happened head coach Mike McDaniel emotional talking with reporters today it's been hard for me not to find myself more upset and tonight Tyreek Hill's agent saying in part at no no point did Hill pose a threat and they believe this escalated because of overzealous officers Lindsay all right Victor thank you for that three ex police officers will soon face trial for the brutal beating of Tyree Nichols in January of last year the officers to Darius Bean Demetrius Haley and Justin Smith have all pleaded not guilty to violating Nicholas civil rights two other officers pleaded guilty video of the incident shows five officers beating Nicholls after he was pulled from his car just a block from his family home through 3 Days Later Tyrie died a trial date has not yet been set but jury selection began today House Republicans have released a report on the 2021 us withdrawal from Afghanistan the report accuses the Biden administration of failing to respond to warnings from military generals that the situation would deteriorate once US troops left images shocked the world as people climbed and clung onto planes 13 service memories and 170 civilians were killed in a suicide bombing at the abig gate near the Cabell Airport during the withdrawal the White House responded to the report saying that this is a partisan effort to cherry-pick the facts ahead of the election today the judge overseeing the trial of Brian koberger the man uh charged for the Fatal stabbings of four college students has agreed to move the murder trial out of the city where the crimes occurred the judge granted this motion writing that his attorneys showed a reasonable likelihood that prejudicial news coverage will compromise a fair trial the defense also argued that there was a mob mentality within the community the family of one of the victims said that they are incredibly disappointed that the trial will be moved now to dangerous weather across the country 67 major wildfires are burning in the west the bridge fire in Los Angeles County sent firefighters running from the flames and the line fire east of LA so explosive it's creating its own weather in the Gulf tropical storm Francine is strengthening mandatory evacuations are already in place Ginger Z times that storm out for us in a moment but first mol langy reports reps from the fire lines tonight new evacuation orders east of Los Angeles as the line fire burns out of control in San Bernardino County threatening some 36,000 homes businesses and buildings more than 12,000 people have already been ordered to flee thousands more told to be ready here in San Bernardino County as the fire continues to spread you see the massive plumes of smoke billowing in the air governor Newsome declaring that state of emergency as the fire exploded in size triple digit temperatures adding literal fuel to the fire creating pyrocumulus clouds and lightning strikes that could start new fires when the thunderstorms roll through they have the potential to blow the fire out in multiple different directions so we just have to be ready for that in Los Angeles County the bridge fire breaking out Sunday firefighters forced to retreat from the flames and in Northern California in allout aerial assault on the boils fire in Clear Lake but not before it destroyed 30 homes and dozens of vehicles well Lindsay you can see how the heat from the fire melted the fence line there behind me the fire just 3% contained tonight that line fire excessive heat warnings are in effect and firefighters are really concerned about dry lightning and thunderstorms going into tonight Lindsay a lot of concerns there m lang are thanks to you now to Tropical Storm Francine the satellite image is taking shape likely a hurricane tomorrow heading for landfall on Wednesday hurricane and storm surge warnings have already been issued ABC's chief meteorologist Ginger Z has the timing and the track for us hey Ginger Lindsay from Sabine Pass to Morgan City Louisiana we've got a h Hurricane Warning already so it's a tropical storm at this moment but we will see likely a hurricane late tonight or early tomorrow so Francine then intensifies even more and I want to time it all out for you because we've got Baton Rouge and New Orleans in tropical storm watch Lafayette in a hurricane watch and look at that cone remember the cone is where the track can go so if it goes on the western side you get more impacts Texas go on the Eastern side New Orleans gets a heftier hit but at this moment it's right about Cameron Louisiana so that dirty side of the storm really impacts Morgan City probably the most but again we're a couple days out here about you know just less than 48 what I wanted to do was time it out and talk about number one storm surge look at how the outer bands are reaching Tuesday night so some of the impacts and deterioration will go quickly tomorrow so get everything you need to prepare done now because it's by Wednesday morning it's just too late 6:00 a.m. there you can see from from Cameron over to Morgan City uh the heaviest rain is about to move on Shore the storm surge could be 5 to 10 ft a lot of these places are so low-lying we always talk about that in Louisiana they take on water well because they do it regularly but with a 10 feet of extra surge it's a problem then by 1 p.m. Baton Rouge starts to touch on that New Orleans gets in those bands and you're going to see whipping winds easily up to 75 m per hour gusts we will then move this thing all the way up into Arkansas Tennessee and Inland flooding could be a problem that's that's why they have significant flash flood risk that goes up to Jackson Mississippi Lindsay all right Jinger we know you'll be monitoring it for us and now to the sad news that came in late today the passing of legendary actor James Earl Jones tonight we remember his long and distinguished career and of course that Unforgettable voice here's ABC Steve oami James Earl Jones had a way about him as an actor and as a performer that was truly Galactic he's perhaps best known for Lending his voice to one of the greatest villains in the history of Cinema no I am your father it was Jones who made the character of Darth Vader in the Star Wars films delightfully menacing I am altering the deal pray I don't alter it any further but Jones had a successful career that stretched decades earlier and was one of those rare artists who' won an Emmy Grammy Oscar and Tony now I didn't give you everything I had to give you I gave you your life one of his Tony Awards was for his Broadway performance in the play fences a story about a black workingclass father struggling to provide for his family in 1950s America he told us in 2014 how he prepares when he takes the stage we yeah we yell at the seats we you yell at the empty seats yeah yeah in Coming to America a comedy that became a cultural moment Jones was the king of Zamunda let them wait I'm talking to my son and in Disney's Lion King He was the king of the jungle remember who you are James earol Jones was born in Mississippi and overcame a stutter as a child he would go on in movies like Field of Dreams to deliver some of the most iconic lines in storytelling oh people will come Ray people will most definitely come our thanks to Steve oen son for that and joining us now is ABC News contributor Mike Muse Mike though of course Jones acted in many movies I think I read today it was something like 200 it was of course the voice of Darth Vader it was his theater roles that that made him truly Unforgettable why do you think that is Lind I can't help but Smile as we're talking about that and we saw that this great package of a life well- lived for me this is a celebration of life uh what you saw in that package was an incredible range of acting and acting ability the fact that I was remembering how he did the role in fences in August Wilson play that August Wilson plays are so iconic uh in the American scope of literature in the cannon of American literature it is silver boast and so to think that a man who had a stuttering problem as a child could go on to conquer August Wilson and to nail it and to make it as memorable and then to also to do Shakespeare with oel and McBeth another uh writer that is very verbose and strong in the English language to master that and to bring it to the stage there's nothing Lindsay you and I both know this of experiencing Broadway experiencing Live acting on the stage there is an energy transfer that happens between the audience and the stage and someone to have that commanding presence of a lion Mustafa in front of you with that strong voice that just resonates that is where the energy is and that's where the transfer is of just pure genius and just a pure thespian and you're right of course he was a master whether it was on the stage in the movies in commercials and you mentioned this earlier that that Jones was a stutterer throughout most of his childhood how does his overcoming of that help to shape and help his career really I mean when you think about the idea of an actor and when I say this I'm going to use the word thespian when it comes to James Ro Jones it is you have to command the language you have to memorize your words but then Lindsay you have to put your own twist into it and so to use literature like poetry that he in order to overcome that he was always just embedded that the English cannon into his constitution of language so he can be reos and to command it I was watching a clip of him doing Sesame Street he was the first celebrity on Sesame Street and the way he enunciated each letter slowly and with emphasis and the way that when he said the letter i he winked to the children on television he just instinctively knew how to connect words and letters to human emotions and that is rare for a thespian to do and that's what gives him the title of thespian and and you're right we should only really refer to him as that a thespian all give me one sentence of how you think that his he will be remembered his legacy he will remember for his range of acting ability and to show generations of actors to come don't limit yourself in your ability and Lindsay that transferred to people like you and I or for people who have careers outside of acting not to limit yourself you can shoot for the moon and for the skies literally that's what James Ro Jones has taught us a a really good message for us all Mike Muse our thanks to you as always still much more to get to here on Prime tonight including a community in morning a tearful farewell today to Brothers John and Matthew gud days after they were struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver but next the race for the White House that no one could have predicted as we hurdled toward election day in a roller coaster of a year look back at this historic political summer all leading to the debate [Music] stage this is impact by Nightline are you kidding me my sense was that everybody around him was afraid of him Britney describes having a secret abortion that not even her family knew about what's going on with Pate what is the relationship like between Harry and William today what do people start to say you look great are you on OIC I told the kids I said I'm not even going to let you eat breakfast until you get your chores done she talks about tough love and harsh punishment no it's abuse I think Scott Peterson murdered his wife and his child proved me wrong do you feel the church accepted abuse yep that's be the most watched newscast in America we are part of an operation is this our combat Operation Center we're approaching the gate militants came in from different directions nuclear reactor so you have a couple loaded and ready to go that house is destroyed but the flag not a te in it how important it made the USA great work hi appreciate is David David I'm David I know you are watch you every night ABC's World News Tonight with David M is America's most watched newscast if you were coming of age in the 1980s the brat pack was near the center of your cultural awareness but for those of us experiencing it from the inside the brat pack was something very different the critics [Applause] agree hated the brat pack what a disaster why did we take it as an offense Andre I'm not going to say we were the Beatles or anything well we didn't tell Shay davum 1985 I think we could have tomorrow night the most consequential moment of this campaign kamla Harris together we will chart a new way forward Donald Trump we will soon be a great nation again face to face historic the ABC News presidential debate moderated by David mure and Lindsay tomorrow night live on ABC and streaming on ABC News live Kulu and Disney plus the ABC News presidential debate two months ago this race for the White House certainly looked a lot different than it does now but after a chaotic summer unfolded before our eyes the race has changed and brought with it historic moments sure to be discussed for generations to come so how exactly did we get here our J O'Brien takes a look back as we move forward [Applause] in an election turned on a dime more than once this is a pivotal moment it's this moment the Trump Biden rematch that literally rewrote the story of this campaign President Biden 81 years old and suffering from a cold his team says struggles to answer certain questions in their first and only debate look if we finally beat Medicare former president Trump pounces I really don't know what he said at the end of that sentence and the race for the White House was never the same now hurdling toward election day I think she's awesome I think she's exciting Harris has been there for three and a half years and it's only gotten worse I just want us to be happy out here live like we wanted to look back on this unprecedented race the former president Donald Trump found guilty on all 34 counts breaking news right now we're getting word that former president Donald Trump during a rally in Pennsylvania President Biden has just announced that he is ending his reelection bid and this Summer that changed it all back in late June after that debate The Fallout is Swift the Democratic party divided over President Biden's ability to win a second time did Joe Biden have a bad night in my opinion yes he absolutely did do you think Joe Biden performed well last night beautiful day do you think Joe Biden should be the Democratic nominee man' Democrats start calling on Biden to step aside with the greatest respect I don't think he's up for it Biden tries to stick it out when you get knocked down you get back up telling our George Stephanopoulos with defense of the Lord Almighty comes out and tells me that I might do that but as the Republican convention nears the president faces increased pressure from high-profile members of his party it's up to the president to decide if he is going to run then as Biden Tri to fend off that pressure former president Donald Trump holds a rally in Butler Pennsylvania Trump is wounded in the ear two other rally goers are also hit and one man firefighter Cory comparator is killed then in just over a week the race starts to change quickly July 13th the same day is that assassination attempt Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer privately meets with President Biden expressing concerns if he can win the RNC starts days later July 15th Trump makes his triumphant return a bandage on his ear Biden is still on the campaign Trail but two days later on July 17th he pauses his campaign after testing positive for covid then Trump formally accepts the GOP nomination and returns to holding rallies and 3 Days Later July 21st President Biden still isolating from covid releases a letter saying he's dropping out of the presidential race it's been the honor of my life to serve as your president Harris quickly scrambles to mount a presidential bid she rallies top Democrats to her side and becomes the presumptive Democratic nominee in just days the first black woman and South Asian candidate to lead a major party ticket professor Matthew dck teaches history and politics at George Washington University and sees parallels between this election and other chaotic periods in American history I would describe the summer of 2024 as on par with some of these really critical extended moments right but says this country has seen even more tumultuous times 1968 assassination of Martin Luther King more than a 100 cities burned right you know large scale uprisings riots uh in major American cities the murder of Robert Kennedy Lynn Johnson withdrawing from the race 68 absolutely felt like the country I think for a lot of Americans country coming apart is it strange for you that this was a race That was supposed to be historic because one of the candidates had been indicted four times and convicted once and that isn't even considered to be one of the most historic events of this race now well what's really crazy is that no one is really talking anymore about a convicted felon running for president I mean people are talking about a little bit but it's sort of Fallen away do you tell your students that they are living through a historic period of time I think that they probably know it we wanted to test that raise your hand if you are going to vote this year and found four GW students three are voting in a presidential election for the first time what was the moment where you jumped and went oh my gosh the assassination ATT was obviously shocking but I think the moment that really sticks out is Joe Biden dropping out of the race and the rallying behind KLA Harris that we saw I think was incredibly surprising and exciting but rather than promoting that National Unity he promised in the days after that assassination attempt I think I'm entitled to personal attacks Trump quickly returning to Old Habits attacking his new rival telling ABC's Rachel Scott I didn't know she was black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn black and now she wants to be known as black what's your top issue the top issue is the future of democracy climate Justice abortion rights and Israel Palestine I think I want to see the government in our communities investing in green jobs and housing affordability and out of our intimate Health Care decisions whether that be Reproductive Rights or gender affirming care I think climate change is something that should be addressed sooner rather than later for their parents generation another key issue the economy both campaigns also battling over key demographics like black voters Suburban women and rust Bel voters Democrats hoping Harris's new running mate Minnesota Governor Tim Walls can give them an edge there I know guns I'm a veteran I'm a Hunter and I was a better shot than most republicans in Congress and I got the tropies to prove it Trump turning to his VP pick Ohio Senator JD Vance to do the same I promise you this I will be a vice president who never forgets where he came from it is a moment of change we don't know what kind of change that is thank you very and this election year roller coaster all leads to that debate stage the first time these two candidates who've never even met in person will face off this is definitely going to be in the textbooks at some point right you want the history to stop for a little bit and everybody relax in a race no one saw [Music] coming a lot of history that continues to be made our thanks to Jay O'Brien for that look back and forward still a lot to get to tonight coming up the FDA is out with new guidelines from mammograms and drawing attention to an all too common breast cancer risk the next Presidential debates date back to 1860 in this country so when do they matter most we look at their impact on the race to the White House as we count down to debate night what does it take to be the most watched newscast in America an operation to capture Isis Fighters is this our combat Operation Center we're approaching the gate now militants came in from four or five different directions operational nuclear reactor so you have a couple loaded and ready to go [Music] the house is destroyed but the flag there's not a tear in it not a tear in it how important is this label right here made the USA look at your smile you're proud of this I love this great work hi where are you where are you appreciate you thank you David good to meet you is David live welcome back to our coverage here in Philadelphia at the national Constitution Center where we just unveiled our debate stayed a short time ago as both CA Harris and Donald Trump prepared to face off tomorrow night people often mistake the Lincoln Douglas debates of 1858 as the first presidential debates but Abraham Lincoln and Steven Douglas were vying for a US senate seat in Illinois back then they wouldn't face each other in the presidential election until two years later here's a history of presidential debates in this evening's by the Numbers the first presidential debate in 1960 is considered one of the most significant the image of Richard Nixon facing off against John F Kennedy entrench the idea that appeares are important part of president presidential campaigns but the next presidential debate would not take place until 1976 President Gerald Ford against former Georgia Governor Jimmy Carter both candidates felt they needed the exposure in 1980 President Carter didn't debate Ronald Reagan until just one week before the election refusing to participate in the first presidential debate that year because of the presence of independent candidate John Anderson with more than 80 million viewers that debate Remains the second most watched debate in history with Ronald Reagan coining catch races like there you go again the most watched debate was in 2016 Donald Trump against Hillary Clinton which attracted 84 million viewers historians say presidential debates matter most when there's no clear front runner in the polls and undecided voters still make a large chunk of the electorate both conditions could be true this year and we still much more ahead here on Prime tonight Apple unveils its latest devices today not just powerful new iPhones and updates to Siri I'm Lindsay Davis thank you so much for streaming with us we have a lot of news to get to tonight but we begin here in Philadelphia of course with the presidential debate set to take place about 24 hours from now right behind me when Donald Trump and kala haris step onto the stage we have a first look at that debate stage where the two will meet for the first time face-to-face encounter with the latest polls showing both locked in a virtual Dead Heat Harris arrived in Philadelphia a short time ago for Trump it'll be his seventh Showdown it will undoubtedly be a rare chance for either candidate to shape the November election with all eyes here on the national Constitution Center in Philadelphia playing host to yet another major historic moment that could help decide the 2024 election as some states like North Carolina already sent absentee ballots to voters we bring you live team coverage ahead of the high stakes debate before before we give you the very first glimpse of the debate stage we kick things off with our chief White House correspondent Mary Bruce here in Philadelphia tonight with just 24 hours to go until their highly anticipated Showdown vice president kamla Harris setting off for Philadelphia where tomorrow for the first time she will come face to face with former president Donald Trump how are you feeling how are you feeling in a new radio interview Harris says she's ready for whatever Trump throws her way there's no floor for him in terms of how low he will go and um and we should be prepared for that we should be prepared for the fact that he is not burdened by telling the truth for days now the vice president has been hunkered down in this Pittsburgh Hotel intensely preparing her team even building a stage with full TV lighting to hold mock debates Harris leaning on several advisers who helped prep Hillary Clinton for her 2016 debate against Trump including one who played the role of the former president in rehearsals but Harris also taking breaks to get out in this critical state in a Pittsburgh Spice Shop greeting one voter who is in tears come here what is that about what is that about what is that about I think you understand I'm pretty sure you know a it's going to be good we're going to be good we're going to be fine Harris perhaps previewing her message for the debate look it's time to turn the page on the divisiveness um it's time to bring our country together try a new way forward while Harris has been largely off the trail since Thursday Trump over the weekend holding a rally in Battleground Wisconsin she will be the worst president and Trump is never wrong I am never ever wrong the former president trying to set expectations is anybody going to be [Music] watching and spin the debate before it even happens you know if I destroy her in the debate they'll say Trump suffered a humiliating defeat tonight no matter what our thanks to Mary Bru former president Trump always says that he is not one for formal debate prep but ABC's senior Congressional correspondent Rachel Scott has learned how he's been preparing for the big night yes Lind he's certainly not doing any of those mock debates that vice president kamla Harris is doing but I'm told that the former president is taking this very seriously he knows how consequential this debate this moment could be I'm told the former president has held nearly half a dozen policy informal sessions with his advisers including with former congresswoman Tulsi gabard who we all remember challenged Harris on the debate stage back in 2019 also involved in his debate prep is Congressman Matt Gates now we are told that Gates is firing off questions at him on some of the tougher issues like his stance on abortion also his legal troubles sources also tell me that Trump has been briefed on Harris's past debates and that includes the debate with Trump's own former vice president Mike Pence there was that notable exchange on the debate stage where Pence tried to interrup Harris and Harris shut him down saying I'm speaking Trump has privately told allies he won't let that happen to him tomorrow night Lindsay all right Rachel Scott our thanks to you as always polling has been consistent since the start of the year with two major issues standing above the rest for voters Nationwide immigration and the economy we'll get to the economy in just a few moments but first it's the issue of immigration and the border that continues to Garner the attention of both candidates on the campaign Trail ABC's Maria vial has more for us from Texas and Maria what is the state of immigration in the Border as the candidates prepared to hit the debate stage tomorrow night well you know Lindsay that is a really great question especially leading up to the debate as of right now we have continued to hear the former president talk a lot about immigration he talks a lot about the flow of migrants into the United States and more importantly he talks about where they are coming from right we've heard prisons we we've also heard mental institutions we've also heard him talk a lot about missing children and how they've gotten lost in the court system and how they are more likely dead or they are they have been trafficked or they are a part of some sort of criminal activity let's be very clear uh when he says these things they are not statements of fact uh they are not uh backed up by reports or statistics a lot of this is again as we've talked about before is is to really rile up a particular base of Voters and get them to come out to the polls and vote out of fear of what may be happening in their backyards but but as of right now we do know that encounters have continue to decrease over the last 3 months right after we saw President Biden uh put that uh executive order into place basically shutting down the border between ports of Entry uh and since then we've also seen some new Asylum restrictions being put in place again all of this leading to a decrease Harris's Camp has continued to say that her work on root causes of migration is the reason for a lot of this or at least part of the reason uh obviously we don't have a whole lot of statistics on that and in fact critics have said if this was where the administration was going to go why didn't we do this sooner how is it possible that all of this decrease all of this success now on the immigration level is now coming just a few months away from the election Mara our thanks to you as always it's all about the economy it's been a common refrain when discussing elections going back for decades and this November as voters feel squeezed by inflation and stagnant wages that refrain is expected to ring true for yet another presidential election season for more on all things economy we're joined by Abc's Elizabeth schy from Washington Elizabeth give us a lay of the land on where the economy is now as the candidates finds themselves in crunch mode just before the debate well Lindsay and this really is a pivotal moment for the American economy which we know is the number one issue for so many voters the key question right now is if the US can achieve that coveted so-called soft Landing in other words can the economy successfully navigate into a time of lower inflation lower prices that you pay every day for products and services without crashing into a recession and there are some promising signs here inflation peaked at 9% back in June 2022 now it's hovering at just under 3% that means the prices they're still going up but they're not going up by nearly as much and another good sign Americans wages on average have now been increasing faster than inflation for more than a year so those higher paychecks they can help absorb some of that sticker shock that you would feel like at the grocery store this does help explain why some companies like Walmart which is really considered a bellweather of consumer spending in the economy they are optimistic right now they say that Shoppers are trying to hunt down a good deal but they are still out spending at a pretty solid Pace Lindsay and what are some of the warning signs in the economy right now so you know if we're thinking about the American economy as an airplane that's trying to land in that sweet spot there are clearly some headwinds so one of them is housing rent prices are stubbornly high we have seen home prices across the us at record levels and higher morg rates have made buying a house even more unaffordable the other warning sign really is the jobs Market the unemployment rate now at 4.2% that's still a historically low number but you can see there on that chart it is tiing up so what that means it is harder to get a job now and companies are not hiring as much as they were even at the start of the year or a couple years back we have seen this in the stock market investors are worried that hiring could start to slow down even more dramatically but the bottom line is that the S&P 500 that's when you see in most Americans retirement accounts or 401K accounts that is still up Lindsay and impressive about 15% so far this year so a silver lining when you're at least thinking about the stock market and some of that near-term uncertainty too so Elizabeth ultimately how much is the economy about the next president and and how much does it fall with the Federal Reserve which oversees large parts of the economy you know the next president certainly will set the stage when it comes to economic priorities and the agenda but what we have seen is a lot of those policies need approval from Congress and in a gridlocked congress the Federal Reserve has taken on an outsized importance in the economy so what's happened is that the Federal Reserve has really taken on this fight against inflation it's done that by making it more expensive to borrow money so that means higher costs if you're trying to pay off credit card debt take out a mortgage get an auto loan the FED is expected to lower those costs next week for the first time in four years that would make it a little bit less expensive to borrow money so ultimately the the path that the FED chooses will be critical for the economy over the next couple of months and going into next year the president does have one role in that though Lindsay that the the Pres next president regardless of who it is will ultimately decide who should be the leader of the FED when the current fed chairs term does expire in 2026 Lindy economy top of mind for so many Americans Elizabeth schy our thanks to you and make sure you tune in tomorrow night for our special coverage of the presidential debate starting at 700 p.m. Eastern when Whit Johnson anchors from right here in Philadelphia followed by our political Powerhouse round table at 8:00 p.m. and of course that all important debate I'll be moderating alongside David mure at 900 p.m. Eastern right here on ABC News he opened fire here's chief justice correspondent Pierre Thomas tonight the Urgent Manhunt for the man suspected of being the sniper who fired at drivers along this busy stretch of highway in Kentucky the victims have been shot through the windshield and hour southeast of Lexington schools in nine districts shut down as police searched for 32-year-old Joseph couch thought to be hiding in this thick dense forest this is thousands and thousands of Acres it's kind of like a jungle Count's considered armed and dangerous now facing charges of assault and attempted murder according to an arrest warrant minutes before the shootings cou a former Army reservice sent a text to a woman saying he was going to kill a lot of people police believe on Saturday evening couch was perched in the woods firing 20 to 30 shots hitting 12 Vehicles five people wounded by gunfire no fatalities but at least one person shot in the face and another in the arm police say this is Couch's vehicle recovered near the attack and they say they discovered an AR-15 style assault rifle close by in the woods here Thomas thank you we will check in with him in just a bit tonight one of the officers seen handcuffing Miami Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill has been placed on administrative leave body camera video shows Hill being arrested then pinned to the pavement face first just a block away from the stadium the Miami dat Police Department says they are committed to conducting a thorough and objective investigation and claim Hill was not cooperative and was detained due to reckless driving and driving without a license Hill insists he wasn't speeding and said nothing offensive to police Harvey Weinstein was rushed to a hospital last night for emergency heart surgery After experiencing chest pains Weinstein was expected in court this week where prosecutors were to present evidence to a grand jury in order to secure a new indictment on sex crime charges Weinstein has denied any wrongdoing and has said his sexual encounters with women were consensual back to Washington now where the Department of Justice indicted two alleged leaders of a white supremacist chat group called terram The doj alleging the group directly solicited terrorist attacks and plotted to kill quote high value targets it's a fast moving story once again let's check in with Pierre Thomas Stephanie the Justice ofman claims it has uncovered a white supremacist Network that has been promoting a race war and calling for the murder of people based on their race religion and sexual orientation the chilling part is that some of these attacks according to the justice department have already been carried out including a man in Slovenia who killed two people before taking his own life a man in Turkey who stabbed five people and a New Jersey teen who the FBI says plotted to attack the power grid doj officials say the so-called terram Group which uses the telegram messenger platform even had an active Hit List targeting a US senator a federal judge and a former Federal prosecutor in a rare exclusive interview the justice department heads of the National Security and civil rights division telling me domestic terrorism involving racist is now a widening threat the threat of uh domestic terrorism is on the rise inside the United States and acts of violence carried out by white supremacists is the single most lethal type of domestic violent extremism that we see in the country right now with the case that we have brought here you know we're on a the highest end of the RoR scale these are people who are exploiting these social media platforms to uh you know to the the greatest extent possible who are uh seeking to uh give so-called sainthood uh to other people who will carry out these attacks they're giving out bomb making instructions they're putting together hit lists the justice department says these individuals are not being prosecuted for their words but because they're encouraging specific acts of violence and again as officials noted some of these s have already been carried out Stephanie our thanks again to Pierre Thomas and now to the sad news that came in late today the passing of legendary actor James Earl Jones tonight we remember his long and distinguished career and of course that voice here's Steve osami James Earl Jones had a way about him as an actor and as a performer that was truly Galactic he is perhaps best known for Lending his voice to one of the greatest villains in the history of Cinema no I am your father it was Jones who made the character of Darth Vader in the Star Wars films delightfully menacing I am altering the deal pray I don't alter it any further but Jones had a successful career that stretched decades earlier and was one of those rare artists who've won an Emmy Grammy Oscar and Tony now I didn't give you everything I had to give you I gave you your life one of his Tony Awards was for his Brad way performance in the play fences a story about a black workingclass father struggling to provide for his family in 1950s America he told us in 2014 how he prepares when he takes the stage we yell we yell at the seats you yell at the empty seats yeah yeah in Coming to America a comedy that became a cultural moment Jones was the king of Zamunda let them wait I'm talking to my son and in Disney's Lion King He was the king of the jungle remember who you are James Earl Jones was born in Mississippi and overcame a stutter as a child he would go on in movies like fields of dreams to deliver some of the most iconic lines in storytelling oh people will come Ray people will most definitely [Music] come an absolute Legend our thanks to sko andami for that and still come County down to the presidential debate our Rachel Scott on the set in stomach just dropped he just really didn't think I had it in me to do something so I did betrayal of Father's secret the all new new season on Hulu what does it take to be the most watched newscast in America we are part of an operation is this our combat Operation Center we're approaching the gate militants came in from different directions nuclear reactor so we have a couple loaded and ready to go the house is destroyed but the flag not a in it how important it made the USA great work hi appreciate you thank is David David I'm David I know who you are watch you every night ABC's World News Tonight with David M is American has most watched newscast ABC News live honored with eight Emmy nominations more than any other streaming news network and ABC News live Prime with Lindsay Davis the first and only streaming show nominated for best outstanding live news program this is ABC News live we're about 24 hours away from the debate between vice president Harris and former president trump it is all happening in Philadelphia at the national Constitution Center and tonight our Rachel Scott gives us a behindthescenes look at the debate stage and what to expect we're here at the national Constitution Center and we are just hours away from the very first debate between vice president K La Harris and former president Donald Trump when these two candidates enter this room it will be their very first time coming face to face and they'll be standing just six feet apart this room is quite intimate there will be no studio audience to cheer them on no campaign staff allowed in this room and the candidates will not be allowed to talk to campaign staff during during the commercial breaks either no pre-written debate notes are allowed on this stage but there will be a pen and pad on each of their podiums the former president won the coin toss and so he chose to have the final word in this debate vice president KLA Harris choosing the podium on the right side of the debate stage their microphones will only be turned on when it is their turn to speak each candidate will have two minutes to answer each question 2 minutes for a rebuttal and just 60 seconds for any follow-up questions and they will be paying close attention to this monitor right here the color will change as the time winds down turning yellow when there's just 15 seconds left and turning red when their time is up and of course our moderators our very own David Mir and Lindsey Davis well they'll be sitting right here moderating what is the first and very likely only presidential debate before November Rachel Scott thank you very much for that behind the-scenes look and as we count down to tomorrow night's high stakes debate helping to shed some light on the magnitude of it all is presidential historian Mark upd Grove mark thank you so much for joining us first off put things into perspective for us just how significant is tomorrow night's debate going to be for the history books politically it doesn't get more significant tonight for the candidates and for history this is the only time these two candidates will square off and debate against one another uh debates can be determinative they can be definitive in terms of determining the fate of a candidate we don't have to go much further than last June to to know that President Biden was thought to be too old he sort of confirmed that perception among voters minds and then dropped out of the race passing the torch to kamla Harris many Americans don't know kamla Harris despite the fact that she's been in the vice presidency for three and a half years so this is vitally important for kamla Harris to establish herself and vitally important for Donald Trump to show that he is capable of leading the nation forward once again as president of the United States Stephanie and Mark you touched on an important point there we we know tomorrow will'll Mark the first presidential debate for vice president kamla Harris some experts say she has a relatively Blank Slate with voters you kind of touched on that how unusual is that for a presidential candidate well usually you have a long time to to establish yourself and that's the another one of the anomal things about this election cycle obviously President Biden had sewed up the nomination for his party and then again dropped out after the last debate so we haven't seen an election cycle for a candidate that has been this short at least in this Century So This is highly unusual and again despite the fact that that KLA Harris was uh served as vice president for 3 and a half years many voters really haven't seen her up close but these these contests are so vitally important because they're the only opportunity that many voters have to to have an Apples to Apples side by side comparison between the two candidates and Mark we know so many people will be watching this debate tomorrow night how much do presidential debates really influence the outcome of an election I think they could be enormously determinative again we saw what happened with President Biden but but I think again because we don't have many opportunities to size up candidates in this kind of way apples to Apple side by side as being asked the same questions it becomes a really important means of comparison between the two candidates so it again it does not get bigger than this for a presidential candidate and given the stakes of the election it doesn't get much bigger than this in history Stephanie and certainly doesn't it's such a highly anticipated debate we will all be watching mark thank you so much for your time president historian and ABC News contributor Mark updo thank you and that does it for our coverage from New York City this hour let's toss it back over to Lindsey Davis in Philadelphia as we are now just hours away from the big debate Lindsay Stephanie thank you hard to believe that just 24 hours from now the stage will be set with both candidates vying for the presidency in what's sure to be a high stakes faceof and we'll have it live for you right here on ABC as I join David M to co- moderate the 2024 presidental IAL debate we hope and streaming on ABC News live Kulu and Disney plus the ABC News presidential debate reporting outside the Gaza Strip I'm Matt Gutman wherever the news is we'll take you there you're streaming ABC News live this is night line there's this real recognition that something isn't working for a lot of people anymore if you ask single adults what dating is like right now I feel fatigued is probably a really good word they might say something like it's just so hectic right now and it's really hard to find a genuine connection I feel so defeated right now call it burnout or fatigue more and more singles say they're fed up especially when it comes to those apps it gets to a point where I'm like okay what are we meeting are we pin pal are we pen pal like are you in jail like I don't know like where where are you relationship experts say they're hardly alone what's different for dating in this moment is that the sheer volume of rejection and disappointment is so much higher for daters than it has been in previous generations between all the swipes likes Taps and DMS almost 80% of singles say they experience some degree of emotional fatigue or burnout when dating online they're disappointed they're frustrated and I think they're overwhelmed by choice which is why a growing number of people are choosing to take their search for love offline singles and dating events are seeing a 42% boost in attendance including the comeback of speed dating events and potential me last time there were 30 people there and look how many people there [Music] are even a pizza tour I'm really prioritizing iners connections kind of just meeting people by chance I don't feel like I've felt disengaged about dating in years and so it's nice to be like okay there's a real way to meet people meanwhile some people are going even more old school matchmaking is old like it's ancient wisdom and Modern Love Blended together I'm s taparia I'm mumbai's top Matchmaker shows like Indian matchmaking and Jewish matchmaking reflecting a Renaissance in the ancient art of matchmaking are we getting anything right about love Alisa Ben Shalom is a professional shodon or Matchmaker who's helped more than 200 couples down the aisle her job an old school one made famous in Pop Culture by Fiddler on the Roof match matcher cat an orthodox Jew Alisa doesn't own a television but that hasn't stopped her from helping singles find love in her hit Netflix show I've helped over 200 couples to get to the H how do you take something old modernize it so that it's appealing to the younger Generations so I love to take Jewish wisdom and put it in plain language a Matchmaker really has three jobs the first job is to be an introducer and put people together the second job is to be a coach walk the walk and talk the talk and help them through the process the third job is to be a closer a closer is the person that says yay you're going to get married this is good we're like I know you might love him but it's never going to work you need to break up since the show's success Lisa has spent her days traveling the world on a missiona Shalom putting on live matchmaking shows okay everybody smile all right let's make matches we bring up two guys and two girls we grill them and get to know them no he's actually nervous and then I throw it back to the audience you're matchmakers and I ask them hey who do you know for these people and who are you going to set them up with that's what happens on dates you have to translate in your brain what people say you're single you're looking for somebody okay good Rabbi lock the door cuz we're not leaving until we have matches okay that is the rule that's right we can go all night I got all night if you do so we're going to start out with the basics name age what you do I am 20 years old um I'm a sophomore I'm studying advertising and the main quality that I'm looking for in a man is emotional intelligence yes I mean I just don't have time to play games after the show I had a chance to jump into the hot seat do you have any specific deal breakers physical tra anything that might be a deal breaker she knows goes okay I am specific about height I I'm she wants somebody really short and although I did get teased for my height preferences I'm 5'8 and I normally am like wearing heels I get a lot of grief for that so that's why we're not giving your grief we go like this right I took away a valuable lesson if not a date I find that we are all extremely similar we love our communities we love our families and I think that we have many more similarities than we do differences I watched Indian matchmaking before we got into Jewish matchmaking and I was like oh my gosh it's the same I'ma mommy I'm a Matchmaker for many families Netflix's Indian matchmaking features SEMA Auntie how are you how are you nice to meet you on the show she tried helping aara Shak Rani find love I want someone who's right for me someone who I can align with though she didn't find her match she says she trusts the process I think it has been the best way for me to meet people and in the South Asian Community matchmaking includes your friends your aunties your random friend at a wedding who thinks she knows another random friend for you in the matchmaking World it seems there is something for everyone at this conference in New York City more than a hundred matchmakers are here to learn how to help clients find their perfect match you have a primary love language but you can be bilingual in your love languages one of the things that's different between matchmakers today and matchmakers a long time ago is that matchmakers today know the science of relationships and they know what's important to long-term happy relationships Jada Harmon has been looking for that special someone over the past year I love someone who is ambitious has goals for themselves has Hobbies lately she's shifted her strategy I am going on a first date with with someone that I met in person and I'm actually feeling pretty excited as singles like Jada continue their search for love IRL the major dating apps are experimenting with artificial intelligence Bumble founder Whitney wolf herd talked about that on Bloomberg TV and then you don't have to talk to 600 people it will just scan all of San Francisco for you and say these are the three people you really ought to meet and so you know that's the power of AI but some relationship experts are skeptical for now no robot is going to be able to tell me who I'm attracted to there's absolutely no way that they're going to know whether I like that person's smell there's no way that they're going to know if I like that person's brain there's no way I'm going to that they're going to be able to predict whether or not that's going to be a lasting connection for me in search of that lasting connection matchmaking services and platforms like tofi say they're taking a Best of Both Worlds approach finding a match can be potentially be a needle and a hay stack kind of story um and it's no different for matchmakers but because of the size of our database we do use AI to narrow down the pool the old school element of a human really understanding another human's emotions doing a Vibe check making sure that sort of like the off paper things match that's where we bring in humans matchmaking whether it's working with a Matchmaker going to that speed dating event or giving the apps one last try experts say there's something to be gained in the journey not just the destination dating can be this process of self-discovery as well and for some that might mean ultimately choosing to be on their own I think there's been a big cultural shift and people recognize that there is something to be said for a happy single person Jada agrees she says her time alone makes her appreciate the good dates I had a really good time it was really fun I definitely would see this person for a second date and I'm just feeling really happy and we'll see where things go our thanks to Reena and welcome to the Nightline [Music] family Baywatch is a fantasy when you hear that theme song it was a wild time and I I was a wild chick Jason Mamoa exploded Carmen was a bombshell Anderson was an icon really proud of everything I've done almost bayw was a whirlwind of Epic highs and News live Prime with lindsy Davis the first and only streaming show nominated for best outstanding live news program this is ABC News live it's the most consequential moment of this campaign now kamla Harris Donald Trump face to face the ABC News presidential debate moderated by David mu and Lindsey Davis tomorrow night live on EBC and streaming on Hulu and Disney plus you're watching America's number one streaming news keep streaming with ABC News live John Legend did plenty when he was young he played piano at the age of four was singing in church at 7 and went off to college at 16 the only surprise about the father for writing an album for families and kids might be what took him so long he sat down with ABC's lindsy Davis great to see you as always give us a sense of who it's harder to write for the little people or the Ordinary People well writing for this album you know know it's a children's album for children and family sing alongs and lullab it was really inspiring for me um because I thought about all the things that I like to tell my kids and Chrissy likes to tell our kids and the messages we like to share with them to inspire them to motivate them to comfort them this is the first album I've ever written on my own without any co-writers or anyone else writing with me and I wrote it at home inspired by my family and it felt really natural so not in the studio but right at the piano in your house and the kids are playing and running around the kids are around so I'm immediately being inspired by our life our life and the way we talk to them and you know uh sharing those messages with everyone did they say anything or do anything that you said you I'm going to incorporate that into the song where well one of my favorite songs on the album is called always come back and it's something we tell our kids all the time because I have to leave a lot for work and this song was about you know comforting them knowing that I'm going to be gone for a little [Music] while what made you decide in love to incorporate your wife Chrissy te Luna and also miles two of your kids yeah so the lead single for the album is l o v e and it's like the anthem the theme song for the [Music] album and I felt like it would be perfect for Luna and miles and Chrissy to sing along with me on it this is the first time the kids have sung with me what made you decide you know what I'm going to actually go in this new Direction well you know it started with uh a very practical thing me trying to learn one of esd's favorite songs on her Fisher Price Kick andplay piano mat maybe you could be a monkey in a bubblegum tree and and so I went in the piano room and learned it and then uh Chrissy posted a video of me singing it to SD could Mony and uh everyone was like John you got to do more of this and I was like you know what I think I can write an entire album like this and I don't want to just cover uh classic songs I want to create new Classics switch gears for a moment and talk a little bit about many people saw you performing at the DNC you have this political activist side with your organization that you created free America where does that come from well you know I was always inspired by artists who saw it as part of their mission as part of the definition of them being an artist to be citizens of the world who cared about what was going on in the world talked about it and their music but also addressed it outside of their music and I always cared about politics and when I was 15 years old uh inspired by people like Dr King but also by artists that I saw As Leaders uh I wrote an essay and it was a Black History Month essay and it was sponsored by McDonald's this essay competition and they asked how do you plan to make black history and I said I plan to become a successful recording artist and use that success as a platform to help people in my community to lift other people up and I've been trying to live that aspiration since I was 15 that's fantastic you know what's funny I wrote that say too I don't remember what I wrote it about but I but I do remember writing that well you're doing it you're making history thank you for uplifting us all so appreciate it John than you much hey thank you thank you great to see you our thanks to Lindsay John Legends new album my favorite dream is out wherever you stream your [Music] music This is impact by Nightline are you kidding me my sense was that everybody around him was afraid of him Britney describes having a secret abortion that not even her family knew about what's going on with Kate what is the relationship like between Harry and William today what do people start to say you look great are you on OIC I told the kids I said I'm not even going to let you eat breakfast until you get your chores done she talks about tough love love and harsh punishment no it's abuse I think Scott Peterson murdered his wife and his child proved me wrong do you feel the church accepted abuse yep that's him yep Ready does your church protect sexual predators how do you top the most watch season yet fabulous it's a bit erotic bit exotic you have no idea impact by Nightline the allnew season premieres this September only on Hulu what does it take to be the most watched newscast in America we are part of an operation is this our combat Operation Center we're approaching the gate militants came in from different directions reactor so you have a couple loaded and ready to go the house is destroyed but the flag not carry any how important it made the USA great work hi it's David D I'm David I know you are you every night ABC's World News Tonight with David mure is America's most watched newscast why do so many people start their day here from ABC News this is start here to be in the know and get a different take on the day's top stories start here now that's a part of the story I bet you didn't see coming make it your daily first listen wherever you get your podcasts ABC News live honored with eight em nominations more than any other streaming news network and ABC News live Prime with Lindsay Davis the first and only streaming show nominated for best outstanding live news program this is ABC News live reporting from Santa Fe New Mexico I'm Lindsay Davis wherever the story is we'll take you there you're streaming ABC News live Elizabeth Olen and Carrie known for some pretty big projects their latest though tells the story of a family coming together in a moment of impending tragedy his three daughters is compelling absorbing and premiering in Select theaters tonight welcome both to the show thank you for having us yeah well two place sisters you have young mothers caring for an ailen father on his deathbed what do you think are the big themes in the film oh my goodness uh I think it's the roles we play in our families how it's very easy to default to those roles when we go home and how incapable we are of seeing the people who are right in front of us there's a lot of tension and and built up emotions I mean that feels like the this the starting place and the Heart of the film as well as what it means to preemptively grief for someone that's passing and the roles we play and in a small cramp New York apartment on film it felt more like a theater piece in many ways I think audiences now love you in the Gilded Age Heavens what a vision the whole audience will be looking at you you are sweet how do you contrast that to what you were able to do here well I think the space I it it does unfold like a theater piece and that it's very l language forward it's so tightly structured it's so beautifully and specifically written and that's what makes it an an extraordinary film and your performance is so naturalistic I mean again my sons and I love you in W division we think of you as a Marvel [Music] character but in this it's very like spare and stripped down were there a lot of rehearsals yes we had rehearsals we had about three days to figure out the Rhythm and the musicality of the language and how we all worked as a unit and I mentioned the apartment and the fact that it's shot on film I think of all these like frankly Woody Allen movies where I'm like there is no New York apartment that looks like that there was very realistic it's a rent control department on the Lower East Side is that right yes and do you think the fact that it was shot on film like what do you what did you take away when you went into those screening sessions when you're actively shooting on film you have to be very deliberate with how you're covering a scene and so it actually creates these limitations and and this structure of how you're going to shoot um in a really freeing way so it was all incredibly intentional and um and specific to how we were telling the story it sounds like a wonderful project to be a part of why it was really special Lizzie KY thank you both for your thoughtful conversation for your thoughtful careers appreciate you being here thank you appreciate it [Music] we are at JM pser by baby my first ever uh business ASM actually means I love you my name is jate I'm a lover everything that has to do with love family friends relationship food Community embodies everything that I am so my slogan is made from love not made with [Music] love every day I wake up at 3:30 a.m. and I'm just like let's get to it I really love what I do the French cooking techniques are very intricate very detailed very technical so knowing that I like to solve problems and knowing that I love a challenge I just gravitated towards their technique of baking all of my recipes are my own I create them from scratch I call it like black girl spin on French pastry the quality of food here is very important I try to be as local as possible I try to make sure that everything that we do is one helping the community but also helping the people who are living in this community so the Pacha is a caramelized onions we don't use any coloring we don't use any processed anything we put fresh berries we make jams here and we put it on uh the fruit Danish our jalapeno cheddar biscuits everyone loves the ham and cheese croissants the chocolate croissants the almond croissants do you want to eat it up people are waiting outside for me to open the door I open the door they zoom in I don't even have time to enter the door because they want to get their stuff because they know I put love into it I'm not going to say never but we barely have any leftovers so people know that anytime they come here it's going to be fresh every single [Music] day so this is my third time coming this week and I absolutely love the Almond cappuccino it is really refreshing to watch this business thrive in this neighborhood if anyone has been here in bedy for a decent amount of years we've watched how not just businesses move but people despite how many ways that people like to talk about bed sty and disparage it and say that black and brown people are destroying a neighborhood we have a neighborhood of love this is bedy Brooklyn a historically black neighborhood it just encompasses everything that I wanted for my business to serve and underserved neighborhood so it was important for me to make sure that I put an impact on communities that not only I come from but that I want to see grow and flourish as well we do accept EBT SNAP here and the process for me to get EBT was quite easy because the space doesn't look like your typical blackowned business no one actually came into my doors until like the fourth month I got a lot of feedback in the beginning like oh we thought you were just another white person gentrifying the neighborhood no one knew that we accepted snap and EBT when I like told my my friends and my family and even people in the neighborhood they were like you don't want to be associated with those type of people and they're just like those people were my mom those people are my family those people are my friends those people are people who live across the street from me so like if you live across the street from a bakery you can never go in because you can't afford like how is that okay people need access to Affordable food healthy food is not sitting in in a store for weeks that was sitting on a truck for weeks that was sitting in a factory for weeks this is food you getting fresh from my oven straight to your mouth we've had a lot of people come in here like I never had a freshly made croissant or I've never had a kiche or I've never had a mousse cake or I've never even tasted anything vegan because it's too expensive before coming here I never really had a lot of the stuff that we make I've never even heard of a lot of the stuff that we make I've been making Brios bread I've been making croissants it's all a learning experience and I really love it hopefully one day I could do something like this I've been working for the last 22 23 years of my life this is actually the first time I've coming to a workplace as is fun most of my staff are interns and in return they receive education from me on how to do everything here here like three sheet trades one sheet trade for each cake they are able to access all of my recipes I do have two Baristas that are on paid roll thank you everybody's here by God's grace just helping me run my [Music] business I'm actually in the process of working with the community organizer to have the bakery become like a residency kitchen where I have people who may have wanted to open a bakery or a business and couldn't have I wanted to be literally a space for the community to grow with for us to pour out love as well as get love I love how she's committing back to the community so I just want to support the business being able to witness another black woman have the courage to run a business is empowering the aesthetic and the feel and the environment it actually motivates me to like get the ball rolling with my own business being a generational curse breaker it may be for some people you know they may be able to carry that weight but I don't choose to carry that weight I choose to start new generations of goodness so I'm not a generational curse breaker I am a generational stter so I want to create my own way just start something new [Music] whenever news breaks we are here in former president Donald Trump how are you feeling how are you feeling in a new radio interview Harris says she's ready for whatever Trump throws her way there's no floor for him in terms of how low he will go and um and we should be prepared for that we should be prepared for the fact that he is not burdened by telling the truth for days now the vice president has been hunkered down in this Pittsburgh Hotel intensely preparing her team even building a stage with full TV lighting to hold mock debates Harris leaning on several advisers who helped prep Hillary Clinton for her 2016 debate against Trump including one who played the role of the former president in rehearsals but Harris also taking breaks to get out in this critical state in a Pittsburgh Spice Shop greeting one voter who was in tears come here what is that about what is that about what is that about I think you understand I'm pretty sure you know a it's going to be good we're going to be good we're going to be fine Harris perhaps previewing her message for the debate look it's time to turn the page on the divisiveness um it's time to bring our country together try a new way forward while Harris has been largely off the trail since Thursday Trump over the weekend holding a rally in Battleground Wisconsin she will be the worst president and Trump is never wrong I am never ever wrong the former president trying to set expectations is anybody going to be [Music] watching and spin the debate before it even happens you know if I destroy her in the debate they'll say Trump suffered a humiliating Street tonight no matter what Mary Bruce joins us now Mary I know you've been talking to your sources in the Harris campaign what's her strategy heading into this debate well Lindsay Harris is certainly an experienced debater but her campaign is quick to note that this is fundamentally different tomorrow will be Donald Trump's seventh presidential debate it will be kamla Harris's first and her goal here tomorrow night is to really highlight her positions on the issues and then pivot to put the spotlight firmly on Trump to voters of his record to counter what the campaign describes As Trump Amnesia among voters and yes she will certainly try to get under Donald Trump's skin the challenge Lindsay is for her to bait him without being baited herself we'll see what happens in just about 24 hours from now Mary Bruce thanks so much now to ABC's senior Congressional correspondent Rachel Scott also in Philadelphia tonight and Rachel president Trump always says that he's not one for formal debate prep but your sources have been telling you that he is preparing yes Lindsay he's certainly not doing any of those mock debates that vice president kamla Harris is doing but I'm told that the former president is taking this very seriously he knows how consequential this debate this moment could be I'm told the former president has held nearly half a dozen policy informal sessions with his advisers including with former congresswoman Tulsi gabard who we all remember challenge Harris on the debate stage back in 2019 also involved in his debate prep is Congressman Matt Gates now we are told that Gates is firing off questions at him on some of the tougher issu isues like his stance on abortion also his legal troubles sources also tell me that Trump has been briefed on Harris's past debates and that includes the debate with Trump's own former vice president Mike Pence there was that notable exchange on the debate stage where Pence tried to interrupt Harris and Harris shut him down saying I'm speaking Trump has privately told allies he won't let that happen to him tomorrow night Lindsay all right Rachel Scott our thanks to you as always polling has been consistent since the start of the year with two major issues standing above the rest for voters awide immigration and the economy we'll get to the economy in just a few moments but first it's the issue of immigration and the border that continues to Garner the attention of both candidates on the campaign Trail ABC's Maria vial has more for us from Texas and Maria what is the state of immigration in the Border as the candidates prepared to hit the debate stage tomorrow night well you know linday that is a really great question especially leading up to the debate as of right now we have continued to hear the former president talk a lot about immigration he talks a lot about the flow of migrants into the United States and more importantly he talks about where they are coming from right we've heard prisons we we've also heard mental institutions uh We've also heard him talk a lot about missing children and how they've gotten lost in the court system and how they are more likely dead or they are they have been trafficked or they are a part of some sort of criminal activity uh let's be very clear uh when he says these things they are not statements of fact uh they are not uh backed up by reports or statistics a lot of this is again as we've talked about before is is to really rile up a particular base of Voters and get them to come out to the polls and vote out of fear of what may be happening in their backyards but but as of right now we do know that encounters have continued to decrease over the last three months right after we saw President Biden uh put that uh executive order into place basically shutting down the border between ports of Entry uh and since then we've also seen some new Asylum restrictions being put in place again all of this lead ing to a decrease Harris's Camp has continued to say that her work on root causes of migration is the reason for a lot of this or at least part of the reason uh obviously we don't have a whole lot of statistics on that and in fact critics have said if this was where the administration was going to go why didn't we do this sooner how is it possible that all of this decrease all of this success now on the immigration level is now coming just a few months away from the election Maria our thanks to you as as always it's all about the economy it's been a common refrain when discussing elections going back for decades and this November as voters feel squeezed by inflation and stagnant wages that refrain is expected to ring true for yet another presidential election season for more on all things economy we're joined by Abc's Elizabeth schy from Washington Elizabeth give us a lay of the land on where the economy is now as the candidates find themselves in crunch mode just before the debate well Lindsay and this really is a pivotal moment for the American economy which we know is the number one is for so many voters the key question right now is if the US can achieve that coveted so-called soft Landing in other words can the economy successfully navigate into a time of lower inflation lower prices that you pay every day for products and services without crashing into a recession and there are some promising signs here inflation peaked at 9% back in June 2022 now it's hovering at just under 3% that means the prices they're still going up but they're not going up by nearly as much and another good sign American wages on average have now been increasing faster than inflation for more than a year so those higher paychecks they can help absorb some of that sticker shock that you would feel like at the grocery store this does help explain why some companies like Walmart which is really considered a Belle weather of consumer spending in the economy they are optimistic right now they say that Shoppers are trying to hunt down a good deal but they are still out spending at a pretty solid Pace Lindsay and what are some of the warning signs in the economy right now so you know if we're thinking of about the American economy as an airplane that's trying to land in that sweet spot there are clearly some headwinds so one of them is housing rent prices are stubbornly high we have seen home prices across the us at record levels and higher mortgage rates have made buying a house even more unaffordable the other warning sign really is the jobs Market the unemployment rate now at 4.2% that's still a historically low number but you can see there on that chart it is tiing up so what that means it is harder to get a job now and companies are not hiring as much as they were even at the start of the year or a couple years back we have seen this in the stock market investors are worried that hiring could start to slow down even more dramatically but the bottom line is that the S&P 500 that's when you see in most Americans retirement accounts or 401K accounts that is still up Lindsay and impressive about 15% so far this year so a silver lining when you're at least thinking about the stock market and some of that near-term uncertainty too so Elizabeth ultimately how much is the econ about the next president and and how much does it fall with the Federal Reserve which oversees large parts of the economy you know the next president certainly will set the stage when it comes to economic priorities and the agenda but what we have seen is a lot of those policies need approval from Congress and in a gridlocked congress the Federal Reserve has taken on an outsized importance in the economy so what's happened is that the Federal Reserve has really taken on this fight against inflation it's done that by making it more expensive to borrow money so that means higher costs if you're trying to pay off credit card debt take out a mortgage get an auto loan the FED is expected to lower those costs next week for the first time in four years that would make it a little bit less expensive to borrow money so ultimately the the path that the FED chooses will be critical for the economy over the next couple of months and going into next year the president does have one role in that though Lindsay that the the Pres the next president regardless of who it is will ultimately decide who should be the leader of the FED when the current fed shairs term does expire in 2026 l economy top of mind for so many Americans Elizabeth schy our thanks to you and make sure to tune in tomorrow night for our special coverage of the presidential debate starting at 7 p.m Eastern when Whit Johnson anchors from right here in Philadelphia followed by our political Powerhouse round table at 8 pm and of course that all important debate I'll be moderating alongside David mure at 9:00 p.m. Eastern right here on ABC News live now to the Urgent manh hunt for a highway sniper suspect who wounded five people in an AR-15 style assault rifle close by in the woods Pierre Thomas joins us now Pier what else are authorities learning about the suspect's weapon well police say he purchased that assault rifle the same day as the attack along with more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition and police worry that he may have access to other weapons as well Lindsay pure Thomas Forest our thanks to you as always next tonight a police officer involved in the arrest of Miami Dolphin star Tyreek Hill is now on administrative Duty Hill pulled over and placed in handcuffs just hours before playing in the first game of the season the incident captured on video Victor Endo reports in from Florida tonight one of these four officers seen handcuffing Miami Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill has been placed on administrative NFL star was eventually released going on to score this electric 80-yard touchdown after the game Hill insisted he wasn't speeding and that he didn't say anything offensive to police I'm still trying to put it all together um so I'm not going to give you um a verion that I still don't know what happened head coach Mike McDaniel emotional talking with repor ERS today it's been hard for me not to find myself more upset and tonight Tyreek Hill's agent saying in part at no point did Hill pose a threat and they believe this escalated because of overzealous officers Lindsay all right Victor thank you for that three ex police officers will soon face trial for the brutal beating of Tyree Nichols in January of last year the officers to Darius Bean Demetrius Haley and Justin Smith have all pleaded not guilty to violating Nicholas civil rights to other officers pleaded guilty video of the incident shows five officers beating Nicholls after he was pulled from his car just a block from his family home three days later Tyrie died a trial date has not yet been set but jury selection began today House Republicans have released a report on the 2021 us withdrawal from Afghanistan the report accuses the Biden administration of failing to respond to warnings from military generals that the situation would deteriorate once US troops left images shocked the world as people climbed and clung onto planes 13 service members and 170 civilians were killed in a suicide bombing at the abig gate near the Cabell airport during the withdrawal the White House responded to the report saying that this is a partisan effort to cherry-pick the facts ahead of the election today the judge overseeing the trial of Brian koberger the man uh charged for the Fatal stabbings of four college students has agreed to move the murder trial out of the city where the crimes occurred the judge granted this motion writing that his attorneys showed a reasonable light likelihood that prejudicial news coverage will compromise a fair trial the defense also argued that there was a mob mentality within the community the family of one of the victims said that they are incredibly disappointed that the trial will be moved now to dangerous weather across the country 67 major wildfires are burning in the west the bridge fire in Los Angeles County sent firefighters running from the flames and the line fire east of LA so explosive it's creating its own weather in the Gulf tropical storm Francine is strengthening mandatory evacuations are already in place Ginger Z times that storm out for us in a moment but first mol langy reports from the fire lines tonight new evacuation orders east of Los Angeles as the line fire burns out of control in San Bernardino County threatening some 36,000 homes businesses and buildings more than 12,000 people have already been ordered to flee thousands more told to be ready here in San Bernardino County as the fire continues to spread you see the massive plumes of smoke billowing in the air governor Nome declaring that state of emergency as the fire exploded in size triple digit temperatures adding literal fuel to the fire creating pyrocumulus clouds and lightning strikes that could start new fires when the thunderstorms roll through they have the potential to blow the fire out in multiple different directions so we just have to be ready for that in Los Angeles County the bridge fire breaking out Sunday firefighters forced to retreat from the flames and in Northern California an allout aerial assault on the boils fire in Clear Lake but not before it destroyed 30 homes and dozens of vehicles well Lindsay you can see how the heat from the fire melted the fence line there behind me the fire just 3% contained tonight that line fire excessive heat warnings are in effect and firefighters are really concerned about dry lightning and thunderstorms going into tonight Lindsay a lot of concerns there m lang are thanks to you now to Tropical Storm France seen the satellite image is taking shape likely a hurricane tomorrow heading for landfall on Wednesday hurricane and storm surge warnings have already been issued ABC's chief meteorologist Ginger Z has the timing and the track for us hey Ginger Lindsay from Sabine Pass to Morgan City Louisiana we've got a hurricane warning already so it's a tropical storm at this moment but we will see likely a hurricane late tonight or early tomorrow so Francine then intensifies even more and I want to time it all out for you because we've got Baton Rouge and New Orleans in tropical storm watch Lafayette in a hurricane watch and look at that cone remember the cone is where the track can go so if it goes on the western side you get more impacts in Texas go on the Eastern side New Orleans gets a heftier hit but at this moment it's right about Cameron Louisiana so that dirty side of the storm really impacts Morgan City probably the most but again we're a couple days out here about you know just less than 48 what I wanted to do was time it out and talk about number one storm surge look at how the outer bands are reaching Tuesday night so some of the impacts and Det rioration will go quickly tomorrow so get everything you need to prepare done now because it's by Wednesday morning it's just too late 6:00 a.m. there you can see from Cameron over to Morgan City uh the heaviest rain is about to move on Shore the storm surge could be 5 to 10 feet a lot of these places are so low-lying we always talk about that in Louisiana they take on water well because they do it regularly but with a 10 feet of extra surge it's a problem then by 1: p.m. Baton Rouge starts to touch on that New Orleans gets in those bands and you're going to see whipping winds easily up to 75 mph gusts we will then move this thing all the way up into Arkansas Tennessee and Inland flooding could be a problem that's why they have significant flash flood risk that goes up to Jackson Mississippi Lindsay all right Ginger we know you'll be monitoring it for us and now to the sad news that came in late today the passing of legendary actor James Earl Jones tonight we remember his long and distinguished career and of course that Unforgettable voice here's ABC's Steve ens Sami James Earl Jones had a way about him as an actor and as a performer that was truly Galactic he is perhaps best known for Lending his voice to one of the greatest villains in the history of Cinema no I am your father it was Jones who made the character of Darth Vader in the Star Wars films delightfully menacing I am altering the deal pray I don't alter it any further but Jones had a successful career that stretched decades earlier and was one of those rare artists who won an Emmy Grammy Oscar and Tony now I didn't give you everything I had to give you I gave you your life one of his Tony Awards was for his Broadway performance in the play fences a story about a black workingclass father struggling to provide for his family in 1950s America he told us in 2014 how he prepares when he takes the stage we yell we yell at the seats you yell at the empty seats yeah yeah in Coming to America a comedy that that became a cultural moment Jones was the king of Zamunda let them wait I'm talking to my son and in Disney's Lion King He was the king of the jungle remember who you are James earol Jones was born in Mississippi and overcame a stutter as a child he would go on in movies like fields of dreams to deliver some of the most iconic lines in storytelling oh people will come Ray people will most definitely [Music] come our thanks to Steve O andami for that and joining us now is ABC News contributor Mike Muse Mike though of course Jones acted in many movies I think I read today it was something like 200 it was of course the voice of Darth Vader it was his theater roles that that made him truly Unforgettable why do you think that is L I can't help but Smile as we're talking about that and we saw that this great package of a life well lived for me this is a celebration of life uh what you saw in that package was an incredible range of acting and acting ability the fact that I was remembering how he did the role in fences in August Wilson play that August Wilson plays are so iconic uh in the American scope of literature the Canon of American literature it is so ver boast and so to think that a man who had a stuttering problem as a child could go on to conquer August Wilson and to nail it and to make it as memorable and then to also to do Shakespeare with lell and McBeth another uh writer that is very verbose and strong in the English language to master that and to bring it to the stage there's nothing Lindsay you and I both know this of experiencing Broadway experiencing Live acting on the stage there is an energy transfer that happens between the audience in the stage and someone to had that commanding presence of a lion Mustafa in front of you with that strong voice that just resonates that is where the energy is and that's where the transfer is of just pure genius and just a pure thespian and you're right of course he was a master whether it was on the stage in the movies in commercials and you mentioned this earlier that that Jones was a stutterer throughout most of his childhood how does his overcoming of that help to shapen help his career really I mean when you think about the idea of an actor and when I say this I'm going to use the word thespian when it comes to James R Jones it is you have to command the language you have to memorize your words but then Lindsay you have to put your own twist into it and so to use literature like poetry that he used in order to overcome that he was always just embedded that the English cannon into his constitution of language so he can be rebose and to command it I was watching a clip of him doing a Sesame Street he was the first celebrity on Sesame Street and the way he annunciated each letter slowly and with emphasis and the way that when he said the letter i he winked to the children on television he just instinctively knew how to connect words and letters to human emotions and that is rare for a thespian to do and that's what gives him the title of thespian and and you're right we should only really refer to him as that a thespian all give me one sentence of how you think that his he will be remembered his legacy he will remember for his range of acting ability and to show generations of actors to come don't limit yourself in ability and Lindsay that transfer to people like you and I or for people who have careers outside of acting not to limit yourself you can shoot for the moon and for the skies literally that's what James Ro Jones has taught us a a really good message for us all Mike Muse our thanks to you as always still much more to get to here on Prime tonight including a community in morning a tearful farewell today to Brothers John and Matthew goodro days after they were struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver but next race for the White House that no one could have predicted as we hurdle toward election day in a roller coaster of a brat pack was near the center of your cultural awareness but for those of us experiencing it from the inside the brat pack was something very different the critics agree [Applause] hated the brat pack what a disaster why did we take it as an offense Andrew I'm not not going to say we were Beatles or anything we didn't tell Shas davum 1985 I think we could have baywash is a fantasy when you hear Epic highs and bitter lows Everyone likes to watch sexy things reporting from the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas I'm Elizabeth schy wherever the story is we'll take you there you're streaming ABC News live two months ago this race for the White House certainly looked a lot different than it does now but after a chaotic summer unfolded before our eyes the race has changed and brought with it historic moments sure to be discussed for generations to come so how exactly did we get here our J O'Brien takes a look back as we move [Applause] forward in an election turned on a dime more than once this is a pivotal moment it's this moment the Trump Biden rematch that literally rewrote the story of this campaign President Biden 81 years old and suffering from a cold his team says struggles to answer certain questions in their first and only debate look if we finally beat Medicare former president Trump pounces I really don't know what he said at the end of that sentence and the race for the White House was never the same now hurdling toward day I think she's awesome I think she's exciting Harris has been there for 3 and a half years and it's only gotten worse I just want us to be happy out here live like we wanted to look back on this unprecedented race the former president Donald Trump found guilty on all 34 counts breaking news right now we're getting word that former president Donald Trump during a rally in Pennsylvania President Biden has just announced that he is ending his reelection bid and this Summer that changed it all back in late Jun June after that debate The Fallout is Swift the Democratic party divided over President Biden's ability to win a second time did Joe Biden have a bad night in my opinion yes he absolutely did do you think Joe Biden performed well last night beautiful day do you think Joe Biden should be the Democratic nominee ma' Democrats start calling on Biden to step aside with the greatest respect I don't think he's up for it Biden tries to stick it out when you get knocked down you get back up telling our George Stephanopoulos withans of the Lord Almighty comes out tells me that I might do that but as the Republican convention nears the president faces increased pressure from high-profile members of his party it's up to the president to decide if he is going to run then as Biden tries to fend off that pressure former president Donald Trump holds a rally in Butler Pennsyvania Trump is wounded in the ear to other rally goers are also hit and one man firefighter Cory comparator is killed then in just over a week the race starts to change quickly July 13th the same day is that assassination attempt Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer privately meets with President Biden expressing concerns if he can win the RNC starts days later July 15th Trump makes his triumphant return a bandage on his ear Biden is still on the campaign Trail but 2 days later on July 17th he pauses his campaign after testing positive for covid then Trump formally accepts the GOP nomination and returns to holding rallies and 3 Days Later July 21st President Biden still isolating from covid releases a letter saying he's dropping out of the presidential race it's been the honor of my life to serve as your president Harris quickly scrambles to mount a presidential bid she rallies top Democrats to her side and becomes comes the presumptive Democratic nominee in just days the first black woman and South Asian candidate to lead a major party ticket professor Matthew dck teaches history and politics at George Washington University and sees parallels between this election and other chaotic periods in American history I would describe the summer of 2024 as on par with some of these really critical extended moments right but says this country has seen even more tumultuous times 1968 assassination of Martin Luther King more than 100 cities burned right you know large scale uprisings riots uh in major American cities the murder of Robert Kennedy Lenn Johnson withdrawing from the race 68 absolutely felt like the country I think for a lot of Americans country coming apart is it strange for you that this was a the race That was supposed to be historic because one of the candidates had been indicted four times and convicted once and that isn't even considered to be one of the most historic events of this race now well what's really crazy is that no one is really talking anymore about a convicted felon running for president I mean people are talking about a little bit but it's sort of Fallen away do you tell your students that they are living through a historic period of time I I think that they probably know it we wanted to test that raise your hand if you are going to vote this year and found four GW students three are voting in a presidential election for the first time what was the moment where you jumped and went oh my gosh the assassination attempt was obviously shocking but I think the moment that really sticks out is Joe Biden dropping out of the race and the rallying behind KLA Harris that we saw I think was incredibly surprising and exciting but rather than promoting that National Unity he promised in the days after that assassination attempt I think I'm entitled to personal attacks Trump quickly returning to Old Habits attacking his new rival telling ABC's Rachel Scott I didn't know she was black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn black and now she wants to be known as black what's your top issue the top issue is the future of democracy climate Justice abortion rights and Israel Palestine I think I want want to see the government in our communities investing in green jobs and housing affordability and out of our intimate healthare decisions whether that be Reproductive Rights or gender affirming care I think climate change is something that should be addressed sooner rather than later for their parents generation another key issue the economy both campaigns also battling over key demographics like black voters Suburban women and Rust Belt voters Democrats hoping Harris's new running mate Minnesota governor Tim Walls can give them an edge there I know guns I'm a veteran I'm a Hunter and I was a better shot than most republicans in Congress and I got the trophies to prove it Trump turning to his VP pick Ohio Senator JD Vance to do the same I promise you this I will be a vice president who never forgets where he came from it is a moment of change we don't know what kind of change that is well thank you very much and this election year roller coaster all leads to that debate stage the first time these two candidates who've never even met in person will face off this is definitely going to be in the textbooks at some point right you want the history to stop for a little bit and everybody relax race no one saw [Music] coming a lot of history that continues to be made our thanks to Jay O'Brien for that look back and forward still a lot to get to tonight coming up the FDA is out with new guidelines for mammograms and drawing attention to an all to Common breast cancer risk the next Presidential debates Philadelphia at the national Constitution Center where we just unveiled our debate State a short time ago as both Caba Harris and Donald Trump prepare to face off tomorrow night people often mistake the Lincoln Douglas debates of 1858 as the first presidential debates but Abraham Lincoln and Steven Douglas were vying for a US senate seat in Illinois back then they wouldn't face each other in the presidential election until 2 years later here's a history of presidential debates in this evening's by the Numbers the first presidential debate in 1960 is considered one of the most significant the image of Richard Nixon facing off against John F Kennedy entrenched the idea that appeares are important part of presidential campaigns but the next presidential debate would not take place until 1976 President Gerald Ford against former Georgia Governor Jimmy Carter both candidates felt they needed the exposure in 1980 President Carter did debate Ronald Reagan until just one week before the election refusing to participate in the first presidential debate that year because of the presence of independent candidate John Anderson with more than 80 million viewers that debate Remains the with David M reporting tonight from Philadelphia good evening tonight from Philadelphia we are here at the national Constitution Center where tomorrow night ABC News will host the first presidential debate between vice president kamla Harris and former president Donald Trump the stakes could not be higher with a new poll just out tonight showing this race is tied at 4949 the candidates will meet face to face for the first time on this stage with no audience in the room a very intimate setting they've never met before it will be Trump's seventh presidential debate it will be the first presidential debate for Harris the vice president arriving here in Philadelphia a short time ago after spending days in Pittsburgh in debate prep complete with mock debate and stage lighting in a new interview that aired today the vice president saying former president Trump is quote not burdened by telling the truth the former president holding a rally in Wisconsin over the weekend then meeting with his team informally he says at Marl Lago but our team learning tonight he is preparing for this debate tonight here the new numbers where this race stands in the Battlegrounds to ABC's Mary Bruce leading us off right here in Philadelphia tonight with just 24 hours to go until their highly anticipated show down vice president Kamala Harris setting off for Philadelphia where tomorrow for the first time she will come face to face with former president Donald Trump how are you feeling how are you feeling in a new radio interview Harris says she's ready for whatever Trump throws her way there's no floor for him in terms of how low he will go and um and we should be prepared for that we should be prepared for the fact that he is not burdened by telling the truth for days now the vice president has been hunkered down in this Pittsburgh Hotel intensely preparing her team even building a stage with full TV lighting to hold mock debates Harris leaning on several advisers who helped prep Hillary Clinton for her 2016 debate against Trump including one who played the role of the former president in rehearsals but Harris also taking breaks to get out in this critical state in a Pittsburgh Spice Shop greeting one voter who was in tears come here what is that about what is that about what is that about I think you understand I'm pretty sure you know a it's going to be good we're going to be good we're going to be fine Harris perhaps previewing her message for the debate look it's time to turn the page on the divisiveness um it's time to bring our country together try a new way forward while Harris has been largely off the trail since Thursday Trump over the weekend holding a rally in Battleground Wisconsin she will be the worst president and Trump is never wrong I am never ever wrong the former president trying to set expectations is anybody going to be [Music] watching and spin the debate before it even happens you know if I destroy her in the debate they'll say Trump suffered a humiliating defeat tonight no matter what so let's bring in Mary Bruce she's live here in Philadelphia Mary I know you've been talking to your sources inside the Harris campaign what's her strategy heading into this debate tomorrow night on ABC well David Harris is certainly an experienced debater but her campaign is quick to note that this is fundamentally different this will be Trump's seventh presidential debate it will be Harris's first her goal here tomorrow night will be to highlight her positions on the issues and then pivot to put the spotlight on Trump reminding voters of his record to counter what the campaign is describing As Trump Amnesia and yes David she will try to get under his skin the challenge for Harris to bait him without being baited herself David Mary Bruce leading us off here in Philadelphia Mary thank thank you let's get right to ABC's Rachel Scott also here at the national Constitution Center uh Rachel president Trump always says he's not one for formal debate prep but your sources telling you he is in fact preparing yes David I'm told that Donald Trump is taking this very seriously and that he knows just how consequential this debate this moment will be the former president I'm told has held nearly a half a dozen informal policy sessions with advisers including with former congresswoman Tulsi gabard Who challenged Harris on the debate stage back in 2019 also involved in his debate prep Congressman Matt Gates we are told that Gates is firing off questions at Trump on some of the tough tougher topics including his stance on abortion and also his legal issues we're also told that the former president has been briefed on Harris's past debates including one with his own former vice president Mike Pence in that notable exchange where Pence tried interrupting Harris and Harris shut him down saying I'm speaking I'm told the former president has privately said he won't let that happen to him David Rachel Scott with us tonight as well Rachel thank you tonight with 24 hours to go before this historic debate the new poll's just in let's get right to our political director Washington bureau chief Rick Klein also here at the Constitution Center and Rick these two new National polls essentially show a dead heat and what are you seeing David recent polls show a tight race is getting even Tighter by some measures the latest poll from Pew among registered voters in exact tie 4949 and a New York Times Sienna poll out just yesterday had a two-point Edge among those same registered voters for Donald Trump this is after weeks of Harris momentum it appears to have dissipated going into the debate and when you you drill down on the Battleground States you see a very close Race Across the Spectrum the two strongest States for Harris right now Wisconsin and Michigan but check this out Pennsylvania the state we're in right now less than 1 percentage Point separating the candidates just underscoring the the the stakes tomorrow night David of course Pennsylvania a must-win Battleground for both campaigns I know Rick you were also digging into the numbers in this New York Times Santa poll there's a striking number in there that speaks to how IAL this debate could be for vice president Harris in particular David this really jumped out at me people who were asked how much they need they know about the candidates now and guess guess what almost a third of Voters say they need to learn more about kamla Harris 28% before they can make their decision to vote that compares to Donald Trump 90% nine and 10 voters say they know enough about him to make a decision again putting some extra pressure on kamla Harris tomorrow night David Rick Klein with us here tonight as well Rick thank you the ABC News presidential debate just 24 hours away vice president KLA Harris former president Donald Trump they'll be right down on the floor here this stage behind me this is a very intimate setting here in this room no audience they will meet for the first time right here in the hall I'll be moderating with our Lindsey Davis of course that debate right here on ABC 900 PM Eastern tomorrow night we continue with the other news tonight to the tropical storm Francine just forming in the gulf and growing stronger set to become a hurricane as it takes aim at the US take a look at the satellite image tonight of Francine taking shape likely a hurricane tomorrow heading for landfall on Wednesday mandatory evacuation already in place where hurricane and storm surge warnings have already been issued tonight let's get right to chief meteorologist Ginger Z with the latest forecast for us hi Ginger hi David Sabine passed to Morgan City Louisiana on Hurricane Warning Lafayette hurricane watch Baton Rouge in New Orleans and a tropical storm watch you pointed out that satellite it's got its center it's moving North Northwest at 7 but a trough is going to push it east of most of coastal Texas and bring it right toward Louisiana you could still see of those outer bands some rain on the very Coastal parts of Texas but I want to time it out for you and talk about the impacts because it's going to be number one storm surge most of the coastal especially Southwestern Louisiana under a warning for 5 to 10 feet you see the timing there that's tomorrow night you're already starting to see the outer bands whip at Cameron there but then you get it closer by Wednesday 6:00 a.m. you could see rain we're talking 4 to 8 in widespread locally up to a foot some of the wind gusts could easily top 75 mph you see it right there at 1:00 p.m. in the afternoon New Orleans getting some of the heftiest Bands everybody East right in that dirty side of the storm David will be watching really carefully but that Inland rain could be a problem too all the way up to Tennessee all right we'll continue to track it with you Ginger we'll see you first thing in the morning thank you we are also tracking the Wildfire emergency in Southern California tonight evacuations outside Los Angeles at least 67 major fires burning in the West in fact one of them the bridge fire right there in Los Angeles County firefighters running from the Flames the line fire east of LA so explosive it's creating its own weather pattern dangerous winds and thunderstorms MOA lengi on the fire lines tonight tonight new evacuation orders east of Los Angeles as the line fire burns out of control in San Bernardino County threatening some 36,000 homes businesses and buildings more than 12,000 people have already been ordered to flee thousands more told to be ready here in San Bernardino County as a fire continues to spread you see the massive plumes of smoke billowing in the air governor declaring that state of emergency as the fire exploded in size triple digit temperatures adding literal fuel to the fire creating pyrocumulus clouds and lightning strikes that could start new fires when the thunderstorms roll through they have the potential to blow the fire out in multiple different directions so we just have to be ready for that in Los Angeles County the bridge fire breaking out Sunday firefighters forced to retreat from the flames and in Northern California an allout aerial ass assault on the boils fire in Clear Lake but not before it destroyed 30 homes and dozens of vehicles well David you can see how the heat from the fire melting the fence line there behind me the line fire just 3% contained tonight excessive heat warnings are in effect and firefighters really concerned about thunderstorms and dry lightning going into tonight David MOA langy with us tonight MOA thank you we're going to turn now to the sad news that came in late today the passing of legendary actor James Earl Jones tonight we remember his long and distinguished career and of course that voice here's Steve oami James Earl Jones had a way about him as an actor and as a performer black actors who say that Jones is the reason they got into the business Jones died this morning at his home in New York surrounded by Family he was 93 years old David an acting giant with a tender evening everyone this is ABC News live Prime I'm Lindsay Davis thank you so much for streaming with us we have a lot of news to get to tonight but we begin here in Philadelphia of course with the presidential debate set to take place about 24 hours from now right behind me when Donald Trump and kamla Harris step onto the stage we have a first look at that debate stage where the two will meet for the first time face face encounter with the latest polls showing both locked in a virtual Dead Heat Harris arrived in Philadelphia a short time ago for Trump it'll be his seventh Showdown it will undoubtedly be a rare chance for either candidate to shape the November election with all eyes here on the national Constitution Center in Philadelphia playing host to yet another major historic moment that could help decide the 2024 election and some states like North Carolina already sent absentee ballots to voters we bring you live team coverage ahead of the high stakes debate before we give you the very first glimpse of the debate stage we kick things off with our chief White House correspondent Mary Bruce here in Philadelphia tonight with just 24 hours to go until their highly anticipated Showdown vice president kamla Harris setting off for Philadelphia where tomorrow for the first time she will come face to face with former president Donald Trump how are you feeling how are you feeling in a new radio interview Harris says she's ready for whatever Trump throws her way there's no floor for him and terms of how low he will go and um and we should be prepared for that we should be prepared for the fact that he is not burdened by telling the truth for days now the vice president has been hunkered down in this Pittsburgh Hotel intensely preparing her team even building a stage with full TV lighting to hold mock debates Harris leaning on several advisers who helped prep Hillary Clinton for her 2016 debate against Trump including one who played the role of the former president in rehearsals but Harris also taking breaks to get out in this critical state in a Pittsburgh Spice Shop greeting one voter who was in tears come here what is what is that about what is that about I think you understand I'm pretty sure you know a it's going to be good we're going to be good we're going to be fine Harris perhaps previewing her message for the debate look it's time to turn the page on the divisiveness um it's time to bring our country together try a new way forward while Harris has been largely off the trail since Thursday Trump over the weekend holding a rally in Battleground with conon she will be the worst president and Trump is never wrong I am never ever wrong the former president trying to set expectations is anybody going to be [Music] watching and spin the debate before it even happens you know if I destroy her in the debate they'll say Trump suffered a humiliating defeat tonight no matter what our thanks to Mary Bru former president Trump always says that he is not one for formal debate prep but ABC's senior Congressional correspondent Rachel Scott has learned how he's been preparing for the big night yes Lindsay he certainly not doing any of those mock debates that vice president kamla Harris is doing but I'm told that the former president is taking this very seriously he knows how consequential this debate this moment could be I'm told the former president has held nearly half a dozen policy informal sessions with his advisers including with former congresswoman Tulsi gabard who we all remember challenge Harris on the debate stage back in 2019 also involved in his debate prep is Congressman Matt Gates now we are told that Gates is firing off questions at him on some of the tougher issues like his stance on abortion also his legal troubles sources also tell me that Trump has been briefed on Harris's past debates and that includes the debate with Trump's own former vice president Mike Pence there was that notable exchange on the debate stage where Pence tried to interrupt and haris shut him down saying I'm speaking Trump has privately told allies he won't let that happen to him tomorrow night Lindsay all right Rachel Scott our thanks to you as always polling has been consistent since the start of the year with two major issues standing above the rest for voters Nationwide immigration and the economy we'll get to the economy in just a few moments but first it's the issue of immigration and the border that continues to Garner the attention of both candidates on the campaign Trail ABC's Maria vial has more for us from Texas and Maria what is the state of immigration in the Border as the candidates prepared to hit the debate stage tomorrow night well you know linday that is a really great question especially leading up to the debate as of right now we have continued to hear the former president talk a lot about immigration he talks a lot about the flow of migrants into the United States and more importantly he talks about where they are coming from right we've heard prisons we we've also heard mental institutions uh We've also heard him talk a lot about missing children and how they've gotten lost in the court system and how they are more likely dead or they are they have been trafficked or they are a part of some sort of criminal activity let's be very clear uh when he says these things they are not statements of fact uh they are not uh backed up by reports or statistics a lot of this is again as we've talked about before is is to really rile up a particular base of Voters and get them to come out to the polls and vote out of fear of what may be happening in their backyards but but as of right now we do know that encounters have continued to decre inre over the last 3 months right after we saw President Biden put that uh executive order into place basically shutting down the border between ports of Entry uh and since then we've also seen some new Asylum restrictions being put in place again all of this leading to a decrease Harris's Camp has continued to say that her work on root causes of migration is the reason for a lot of this or at least part of the reason uh obviously we don't have a whole lot of statistics on that in fact critics have said if this was where the administration was going to go why didn't we do this sooner how is it possible that all of this decrease all of this success now on the immigration level is now coming just a few months away from the election Maria our thanks to you as always it's all about the economy it's been a common refrain when discussing elections going back for decades and this November as voters feel squeezed by inflation and stagnant wages that refrain is expected to ring true for yet another presidential election season for more on all things economy we joined by Abc's Elizabeth schy from Washington Elizabeth give us a lay of the land on where the economy is now as the candidates find themselves in crunch mode just before the debate well Lindsay and this really is a pivotal moment for the American economy which we know is the number one issue for so many voters the key question right now is if the US can achieve that coveted so-called soft Landing in other words can the economy successfully navigate into a time of lower inflation lower prices that you pay every day for products and services without crashing into a recession and there are some promising signs here inflation peaked at 9% back in June 2022 now it's hovering at just under 3% that means the prices they're still going up but they're not going up by nearly as much and another good sign Americans wages on average have now been increasing faster than inflation for more than a year so those higher paychecks they can help absorb some of that sticker shock that you would feel like at the grocery store this does help explain why some companies like Walmart which is really considered a Belle weather of consumer spending in the economy they are optimistic right now they say that Shoppers are trying to hunt down a good deal but they are still outs spending at a pretty solid Pace Lindsay and what are some of the warning signs in the economy right now so you know if we're thinking about the American economy as an airplane that's trying to land in that sweet spot there are clearly some headwinds so one of them is housing rent prices are stubbornly high we have seen home prices across the us at record levels and higher mortgage rates have made buying a house even more unaffordable the other warning sign really is the jobs Market the unemployment rate now at 4.2% that's still a historically low number but you can see there on that chart it is ticking up so what that means it is harder to get a job now and companies are not hiring as much as they were even at the start of the year or a couple years back we have seen this in the stock market investors are worried that hiring could start to slow down even more dramatically but the bottom line is that the S&P 500 that's when you see in most Americans retirement accounts or 401K accounts that is still up Lindsay and impressive about 15% so far this year so a silver lining when you're at least thinking about the stock market and some of that near-term uncertainty too so Elizabeth ultimately how much is the economy about the next president and and how much does it fall with the Federal Reserve which oversees large parts of the economy you know the next president certainly will set the stage when it comes to economic priorities and the agenda but what we have seen is a lot of those policies need approval from Congress and in a gridlocked congress the Federal Reserve has taken on an outsized importance in the economy so what's happened is that the Federal Reserve has really taken on this fight against inflation it's done that by making it more expensive to borrow money so that means higher costs if you're trying to pay off credit card debt take out a mortgage get an auto loan the FED is expected to lower those costs next week for the first time in four years that would make it a little bit less expensive to borrow money so ultimately the the path that the FED chooses will be critical for the economy over the next couple of months and going into next year the president does have one role in that though Lindsay that the the Pres the next president regardless of who it is will ultimately decide who should be the leader of the FED when the current fed chairs term does expire in 2026 Lindsay economy top of mind for so many Americans Elizabeth schully our thanks to you and make sure you tune in tomorrow night for our special coverage of the presidential debate starting at 700 p.m. Eastern when Whit Johnson anchors from right here in Philadelphia followed by our political Powerhouse round table at 8:00 p.m. and of course that all important debate I'll be moderating alongside David mure at 9:00 p.m. Eastern right here on ABC justice correspondent Pierre Thomas tonight the Urgent man hunt for the man suspected of being the sniper who fired at drivers along this busy stretch of highway in Kentucky the victims have been shot through the windshield an hour southeast of Lexington schools in nine District shut down as police searched for 32-year-old Joseph couch thought to be hiding in this thick dense forest this is thousands and thousands of Acres it's kind of like a jungle Couch's considered armed and dangerous now facing charges of assault and attempted murder according to an arrest warrant minutes before the shootings Couch a former Army reservist sent a text to a woman saying he was going to kill a lot of people police believe on Saturday evening C was perched in the Woods by ing 20 to 30 shots hitting discovered an AR-15 style assault rifle close by in the woods Pi Thomas thank you we will check back in with you in just a bit tonight one of the officers seen handcuffing Miami Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill has been placed on administrative lead body camera video shows Hill being arrested then pinned to the pavement face first just a block away from the stadium the Miami dat Police Department says they are committed to conducting a thorough and objective investigation and claim Hill was not cooperative and was detained due to reckless driving and driving without a license Hill insists he wasn't speeding and said nothing offensive to police Harvey Weinstein was rushed to a hospital last night for emergency heart surgery After experiencing chest pains Weinstein was expected in court this week where prosecutors were to present evidence to a grand jury in order to secure a new indictment on sex crime charges Weinstein has denied any wrongdoing and has said his sexual encounters with women were consensual back to Washington now where the Department of Justice indicted two alleged leaders of a white supremacist chat group called terram The doj alleging the group directly solicited terrorist attacks and plotted to kill quote high value targets it's a fast moving story once again let's check in with Pierre Thomas Stephanie the justice of Department claims it has uncovered a white supremacist Network that has been promoting a race war and calling for the murder of people based on their race religion and sexual orientation the chilling part is that some of these attacks according to the justice department have already been carried out including a man in Slovenia who killed two people before taking his own life a man in Turkey who stabbed people and a New Jersey teen who the FBI says plotted to attack the power grid doj officials say the so-called terram Group which uses the telegram messenger platform even had an active Hit List targeting a us cior a federal judge and a former Federal prosecutor in a rare exclusive interview the justice department heads of the National Security and civil rights division telling me domestic terrorism involving races is now a widening threat the threat of uh domestic terrorism is on the rise inside the United States and acts of violence carried out by white supremacist is the single most lethal type of domestic violent extremism that we see in the country right now with the case that we have brought here you know we're on a the highest end of the RoR scale these are people who are exploiting these social media platforms to uh you know to the the greatest extent possible who are uh seeking to uh give so-called sainthood uh to other people who will carry out these attacks they're giving out bomb making instructions they're putting together hit lists the justice department says these individuals are not being prosecuted for their words but because they're encouraging specific acts of violence and again as officials noted some of these attacks have already been carried out Stephanie our thanks again to Pierre Thomas and now to the sad news that came in late today the passing of legendary actor James earol Jones tonight we remember his long and distinguished career and of course that voice here's Steve osami James Earl Jones had a way about him as an actor and as a performer that was truly Galactic he is perhaps best known for Lending his voice to one of the greatest villains in the history of Cinema no I am your father it was Jo who made the character of Darth Vader in the Star Wars films delightfully menacing I am altering the deal pray I don't alter it any further but Jones had a successful career that stretched decades earlier and was one of those rare artists who've won an Emmy Grammy Oscar and Tony now I didn't give you everything I had to give you I gave you your life one of his Tony Awards was for his Broadway performance in the play fences a story about a black workingclass father struggling to provide for his family and 1950s America he told us in 2014 how he prepares when he takes the stage we yell we yell at the seats we you at the empty seats yeah yeah in Coming to America a comedy that became a cultural moment Jones was the king of Zamunda let them wait I'm talking to my son and in Disney's Lion King He was the king of the jungle remember who you are James Earl Jones was born in Mississippi and overcame a stutter as a child he would go on in movies like Field of Dreams to deliver some of the most iconic lines in storytelling oh people will come Ray people will most definitely come an absolute Legend our thanks to steo S Sami for that and still will come counting down to the presidential debate our Rachel Scott on the set Trump we will soon be a great nation again face to face historic the ABC News presidential debate moderated by David mure and Lindsey Davis tomorrow night live on ABC and streaming on ABC News live Hulu and Disney plus the ABC News presidential debate ABC News honored for excellence with 40 Emmy nominations mornings evenings late night weekends streaming 24/7 40 Emmy nominations thank you for making ABC News America's number one news ABC News America's number one news Source we're about 24 hours away from the debate between vice president Harris and former president trump it is all happening in Philadelphia at the national Constitution Center and tonight our Rachel Scott gives us a behindthescenes look at the debate stage and what to expect we're here at the national Constitution Center we are just hours away from the very first debate between vice president K La Harris and former president Donald Trump when these two candidates enter this room it will be their very first time coming face to face and they'll be standing just 6 feet apart this room is quite intimate there will be no studio audience to cheer them on no campaign staff allowed in this room and the candidates will not be allowed to talk to campaign staff during the commercial breaks either no pre-written debate notes are allowed on this stage but there will be a pen and pad on each of their podiums the former president won the coin toss and so he chose to have the final word in this debate vice president KLA Harris choosing the podium on the right side of the debate stage their microphones will only be turned on when it is their turn to speak each candidate will have 2 minutes to answer each question 2 minutes for a rebuttal and just 60 seconds for any follow-up questions and they will be paying close attention to this monitor right here the color will change as the time winds down turning yellow when there's just 15 seconds left and turning red when their time is up and of course our moderators our very own David Mir and Lindsey Davis will they'll be sitting right here moderating what is the first and very likely only presidential debate before November Rachel Scott thank you very much for that behind the scenes look and as we count down to tomorrow night's high stakes debate helping to shed some light on the magnitude of it all is presidential historian Mark upd Grove mark thank you so much for joining us first off put things into perspective for us just how significant is tomorrow night's debate going to be for the history books politically it doesn't get more significant tonight for the candidates and for history this is the only time these two candidates will square off and debate against one another uh debates can be determinative they can be definitive in terms of determining the fate of a candidate we don't have to go much further than last June to to know that President Biden was thought to be too old he sort of confirmed that perception among voters minds and then dropped out of the race passing the torch to kamla Harris many Americans don't know KLA Harris despite the fact that she's been in the vice presidency for three and a half years so this is vitally important for kamla Harris to establish herself and vitally important for Donald Trump to show that he is capable of leading the nation forward once again as president of the United States Stephanie and Mark you touched on an important point there we we know tomorrow will Mark the first presidential debate for vice president kamla Harris some experts say she has a relatively blank slate with voters you kind of touched on that how unusual is that for a presidential candidate well usually you have a long time to to establish yourself and that's the another one of the anomalous things about this election cycle obviously President Biden had sewed up the nomination for his party and then again dropped out after the last debate so we haven't seen an election cycle for a candidate that has been this short at least in this Century so This is highly unusual and again despite the fact that that kamla Harris was uh served as vice president for three and a half years many voters really haven't seen her up close but these these uh contests are so vitally important because they're the only opportunity that many voters have to to have an Apples to Apples side by side comparison between the two candidates and Mark we know so many people will be watching this debate tomorrow night how much do presidential debates really influence the outcome of an election I think they could be enormously determinative again we saw what happened with President Biden but but I think again because we don't have many opportunities to size up candidates in this kind of way Apples to Apples side by side as being asked the same questions it becomes a really important means of comparison between the two candidates so it again it does not get bigger than this for a presidential candidate and given the stakes of the election it doesn't get much bigger than this in history Stephanie it certainly doesn't it's such a highly anticipated debate we will all be watching mark thank you so much for your time presidential historian and ABC News contributor Mark upd Gro thank you and that does it for our coverage from New York City this hour let's toss it back over to Lindsey Davis in Philadelphia as we are now just hours away from the big debate Lindsay Stephanie thank you hard to to believe that just 24 hours from now the stage will be set with both candidates vying for the presidency in what's sure to be a high stakes faceof and we'll have it live for you right here on ABC as I join David M to co- moderate the 2024 presidential debate we hope to
