Essential Vocabulary for IELTS Success

many I students have two problems they struggle with understanding the I reading and listening passages and they don't have advanced vocabulary for I writing and speaking the solution to both problems is to expand your vocabulary they are words that frequently appear in I's listening and reading so if you know them you won't have difficulties understanding the passages and they words that make your score go up in I's writing and speaking in this video I'm going to teach you 40 words you must know to get the score you need by the end of this video you will be equi with a broad vocabulary that you can use in your is test by the way if you're going to take your is soon check out my is materials there I teach you everything you need to score high I show you step by step how to give high scoring answers and of course we do many practice tests together so you will feel confident for your test you can find the link to the I materials in the description box and now get a paper and a pen for each word you know you get one point comment below how many words you know for example 20 35 or 40 let's get started first let's have a look at a word that is fantastic to show off your vocabulary when writing about graphs and charts in is writing task one the word is appreciable pay attention guys this word is confusing appreciable sounds like appreciate however it doesn't mean you're really thankful rather it means that something is noticeable for instance in is writing task one you can write there was an appreciable change in the amount of rain between 2020 and 2021 that means there was a very noticeable difference in the amount of rain in those two years okay now that you have a word for very noticeable change how do you describe a change that's hard to see the perfect word is negligible this means that there may have been a difference but it's not really worth paying attention to for example in is writing task one you could say there was a negligible increase in prices last month that means that prices did go up but it wasn't enough for anyone to even notice or complain about negligible is an essential word if you want a high band score because it shows that your vocabulary is very Advanced next comes postponing this means a delay until later it's often used when talking about activities and events so you hear it a lot in is listening a speaker might say did you go to the outdoor concert the reply may be no it was postponed because of rain so if you hear this word you know that this is about a delay this is super important in I listening because you often need to answer questions about when something happened and the speakers often talk about delays or a change in plan so make sure you remember postpone for your a test word number four is crucial for I speaking you will have to talk about many different topics in your speaking test such as where you live tenant is a formal way to say a person who rents a house it's very Advanced vocabulary and it really shows off your language skills that's why using tenant will improve your score for example when talking about where you live you can say the other tenants in my apartment building are older than I am the next word is essential for I listening and writing in writing I always use it especially in task 2 this word is awesome because it makes your answer flow smoothly and demonstrates that you know Advanced vocabulary the word I'm talking about is however however introduces a change in topic it's really really important because I's listening questions often include wrong answers that come before the however if you don't pay attention to the information after however you get the question wrong here's what I mean the question says what did the speaker eat for lunch the listening passage says I wanted to eat pizza however the restaurant was closed so I had a sandwich here are two of the answer choices the speaker ate a pizza the speaker ate a sandwich guys here you can see that you must understand what however means to know that the first answer is wrong however shows that the topic changes the person wanted a pizza but really ate something else so if you know the meaning of however you can select the correct answer the speaker ate a sandwich you will need the next word very often especially in is writing task two in task two you have to give reasons to support your view so you have to say why you feel this way and to do this you have to use because or because of pay attention here guys there is an important difference between the two because is followed by a clause like the concert was postponed because the weather was bad the weather was bad has a noun and a verb so it's a clause on the other hand because of is followed by a noun the concert was postponed because of the rain make sure you use these two correctly in your Isles test this is a little difference but shows that your English is Advanced which will improve your band score if you see a medical Topic in is reading there probably will be a discussion of symptoms symptoms are the way and illness shows for example a runny nose is a common cold symptom word number eight is often used in I's reading when talking about research it's very Advanced vocabulary I'm talking about imply this is an awesome word to show that something is not said but you hindered it for example the results of the study imply that nuts are good for your health this shows that you don't have proof but you're pretty sure based on the results this word may also be used in I reading questions and you need to understand what it means to be able to answer the question correctly for instance the question may say what does the passage imply about if you see such a question you know that the answer is not given in the text you have to figure it out from Clues here you can see that it's essential to know this word because otherwise you may be sitting in your is reading test wondering what you have to do word number nine is anyway you hear it a lot in I's listening and you can use it in the speaking section too anyway is a casual linking word it is used a few ways most common is to show that the person is about to return to the topic after talking about something less important in other words it shows that the following Point may be important to pay attention to for instance in is's listening the speaker may say DaVinci did lots of drawings as well as paintings anyway I want to talk about his most famous painting the Mona Lisa in this example the speaker was talking about drawings which maybe was an answer to a question but you know that the focus of the lecture is really about the Mona Lisa anyway is useful to know because it brings your attention to the important part in is listening so you know what to focus on and this helps you find the correct answer answer it's also a great word for I speaking because you can use it to go back to the main topic after you have talked about a minor Point word number 10 is essential for I speaking if the examiner asks you a question and you don't know what a word means you have to ask him here you can use a very Advanced word clarify so you can ask the examiner to clarify the word to clarify something means to make a point more understandable anomalous refers to something unusual or different you use this word to show that something is unexpected or it doesn't fit in like the scientists are studying the anomalous burst of energy from the Star anomalous includes the idea of Surprise by contrast isolated indicates separate but it can be expected it's good to recognize these words when you see or hear them if you want to to use them be careful to do so correctly if you include the proper meaning the is examiner will be impressed with your English skills the next word is a score booster because it's a phrasal verb sign up for phrasal verbs like this one increase your band score because they are difficult so they show that your English is very Advanced here several words together have a different meaning than one word on its own sign is writing your name but sign up for means register for a class or activity for example you could say I signed up for a French class next term phrasal verbs sound natural if you use them correctly but if you make a mistake they can confuse your audience and this will lower your score therefore be sure to only use phrasal verbs you know well go over is another great phrasal verb pay attention guys go over it does not mean actually moving from one place to another it means to review or read something carefully for example I might say go over the vocabulary list one more time before your is test word number 14 is essential if you get a topic about Banks savings and money on your is test these topics can be really difficult especially if you're not use to finance but they do show up on the aisles so it's important to know the vocabulary open an account is a common phrasal verb to show you start a savings plan to put money into the bank for example I opened an account when I moved to England let's check out word number 15 inflation this is another common money word it refers to when prices increase and money gets less valuable here's a sentence using the word inflation inflation was high in the 1980s this is a sentence that you may find in I reading if the passage is about money word number 16 is call off that's an important phrasal verb especially for is listening call off is different from postponed it means cancelled the event will not happen for example one of the speakers in is listening may say the concert was called off this means that the concert didn't happen and it will not happen later but if the speaker says the concert was po postponed this means that the concert didn't happen but there will be a concert later such as on a sunny day be sure not to mix up postponed and called off if you want a b nine these are super important words in particular in is listening so make sure you know the difference the next word is extremely important for is writing and speaking it's male and Men okay you probably think I'm crazy to mention male as an important word to learn since you already know it right well lots of students use this wrong and then their score goes down like this guys you must know the difference between male and man male is usually an adjective and man is a noun compare these two sentences to understand the difference I saw a man in the hall I saw a male deer in the forest so male describes the deer as it's an adjective while man stands on its own because it's a know but guys when you want to talk about people who are male don't say male people instead say men sometimes you may hear males as a noun but I highly recommend that you don't use it as in most cases it's wrong on the same topic female is an adjective and woman is a noun here is a sentence using those two words the woman owns a female cat word number 80 is differentiate that's an amazing word for pointing out a difference between two things in graphs and charts in I's writing task one this word is also used a lot in the reading test to stress that two things are not the same for example the Biology lecture differentiated between frogs and toads in other words the Biology lecture talked about the points that are not the same in a frog and in a toad actually the word differentiate is important for another reason too do you see that ending eight it's a really common ending used to make another word into a verb for example active is an adjective showing that something's working right activate is a verb meaning that you start something so that it's working so if you don't know a word ending on eight remove the eight ending because this may help you figure out what it means word number 19 is established this one is tricky because it has two meanings that are common in the aisles so you may get confused if you don't know both therefore you must absolutely know what the two meanings are the first meaning is to start something usually a company or group for example this company was established in 93 the other meaning is totally different it means that you prove a fact for instance Galileo established that there are craters on the moon so Galileo proved that there are craters on the moon as you can see here words with two meanings can be quite tricky word number 20 comes up in several different places it refers to showing that something is true what am I talking about verify you need to verify your ID at the start of the is test for example you need to prove that you really are who you say you are you may also hear this word in I's listening and reading if there is a discussion about research for example the results were verified in a second study in other words the second study showed that the results of the first study really were correct by the way guys if this video is helpful to you hit the like button also comment down below whether you want more vocabulary videos write more if you want more if you want me to talk about some else tell me your video wish in the comments so I know what you would like to see on this channel now let's have a look at 20 more words that help you get a high I spand score the next word is accurate this word is on the same topic as verify but it's used in different ways don't confuse them verify is a verb but accurate is an adjective you verify that results are accurate for example you can say her answer was accurate note that you can also add ly to Accurate to make an adverb accurately for example she accurately answered the question immediate is another adjective but it can be confusing because it has two very different meanings too let me differentiate between them one means really quickly or right now it's used like the immediate need is food that means the most important need right now is food you might also say her response was immediate that means she responded right away really fast but the other meaning is close or in the same area I could say there are three restaurants in my immediate neighborhood that use isn't as common but I'm trying to show that you need to pay attention to the fact that words may be used in different ways word number 23 is one of those words that has the different meanings argue you probably know it refers to a fight the two children argued about the ball however it's also used to show that you describing one side of a debate for example the professor argued for a new recycling program at the school this is not negative the professor wasn't yelling and screaming rather she was giving the reasons for the view that a new recycling program is good while I'm mentioning words with two meanings let's look at maintain it's often used to talk about preserving or keeping something nice for example the park is maintained by the city that means that the city keeps the park clean and safe right but the other meaning also shows up on the aisles and it can be confusing maintain can also mean have a certain Viewpoint using the earlier example the professor maintains that the school needs a new recycling program the professor holds the view that the new recycling program is good she's not necessarily debating with another person about it just saying the opinion in general if you correctly use maintain this way in the speaking or writing section you can really boost your score word number 25 is a great synonym for many many is used way too often so it's great if you use a different word to show that you have a broad vocabulary I'm talking about multiple multiple shows that there are more than one for example I have seen that movie multiple times that means you saw the movie more than once or twice it's great because you don't have to spend time trying to remember the exact number pay attention though multiple is used with countable objects or experiences for example movies are countable so you can use multiple here but what do you use when something is not accountable if you're talking about lots of something that is not countable you can say abandoned water is not accountable is it try water is abundant in Japan there's lots of water in Japan abundant is often used to talk about resources so it's sometimes used with countable objects that are considered resources in an area such as trees are abandoned in the forest now that I gave you words for many things here's a word for for only one thing isolated it can mean alone like the house is isolated in the woods on the Isles you will also see that it means one unusual case here is a sentence that uses it that way there is an isolated example of a tree that is white but most are green I'm going to give an easier word now but it's really valuable increase means to get bigger you hear this a lot and you can use it when discussing Trends in graphs too the profits increased every year that means that each year there were more profits now look at the next word word number 29 is improve improve means to get better it's often confused with increase but they're very different improve includes your opinion of the situation whereas increase does not and your opinion of getting better may be that something gets smaller let's say that gasoline prices go up from $1 to $5 your response is that's a big increase however the prices didn't improve you would say gas prices improve when they go down here you can see that these words are different word number 30 is the opposite of increase like increase decline doesn't show your opinion it only shows that something gets lower for example code sales decline in the summer you show that few codes are sold but you're not giving an opinion about it the next word is the opposite of improve deteriorate it means that things are getting worse it's actually a fairly negative word showing you strongly feel that it's not good I might say my language skills deteriorated because I did not study don't mix up Decline and deteriorate though they sound similar here's an another pair of words that have slightly different meanings too first in this pair is substantial that means a lot I made substantial progress in English means that I made a whole lot of progress this word also doesn't have any positive or negative tone you can use it to describe something bad too like we had a substantial number of problems significant is like substantial because it can mean a lot however it doesn't really mean that instead it refers to something that is notable or important in some way I can use it in the same sentence changing I made substantial progress in English to I made significant progress in English this time the meaning is not necessarily a lot of progress but it may be rather significant shows that your progress was important or valuable in some way for example you may have learned to use the past tense that's a significant thing to learn so substantial means lots and significant means important they're often used to describe the same situations but give a different meaning speaking of meanings I want to talk about employe that means to hire right yes employee can be used like I was employed at the restaurant however there's another meaning to use for example I employed a new method to solve the problem as you can see I didn't hire a me method I used the method you will see this meaning for employ in is reading so don't get confused another word with two meanings is secure the is uses this kind of word a lot to see the extent of your vocabulary many people know one meaning but not the second one the first meaning is the adjective safe like I felt secure in the room it's also a verb meaning to make safe like I secured the lock on the door but here's the other meaning to get that's totally different for example I secure tickets to the concert it may be hard to figure out when to use that rather than get but be aware of it so you aren't confused during the listening passages now I want to talk about edges those are words which show you are not totally sure these words are awesome because you can give your opinion without making your language sound too strong I use edwords a lot in the speaking and writing sections because I can state facts that are probably but maybe not true the first Edge word is assume that means the same thing as I think for example I assume that most people in my country celebrate New Year's Day if I use assume I'm not saying that everyone celebrates it makes the fact more accurate presumably is another awesome Edge word it means probably you can use probably too but you don't want to say the same word again and again therefore use this to show of your awesome vocabulary for example presumably most students study before taking the aisles that means that I'm guessing most students study but I could be wrong I show that I'm giving my point of view rather than stating a fact that I know for sure there are lots of edgew and you should try to include as many as possible I in your vocabulary I'm giving you one more for a different purpose AER is used to describe the way something looks but the situation may really be different for example the faculty in my college appear happy that means the teachers look happy and you're guessing they're happy however they could all be upset with the work you don't really know aren't edgew wonderful the last two words are phrasal verbs again those are the words that mean different things when they're put together I'm adding these at the end to show you how important it is to learn the correct meaning and context run into means to meet for example I ran into Jag yesterday that means I met J yesterday pretty easy right now try run with a different preposition this is word number 40 run out run out means that there is no more of something I ran out of paper this means I have no more paper don't confuse these phrasal verbs I ran into paper makes no sense the message here is practice the words and use them if you're comfortable but be careful about words that you don't know how to use well that's it that's 40 words you must know to score high on the aisles I hope you like this video don't forget to like subscribe to the channel and hit the Bell icon so you're notified when the next
