with the 2024 us election fast approaching it can be easy to get caught up in the personalities of the two candidates rather than their tangible vision for the country with this in mind we've put together a side by-side comparison for the explicit policies intended to be enacted by both Republican nominee Donald Trump and the Democratic nominee Camala Harris some of the policies chosen represent issues that are specific to the United States in the current year such as foreign policy within Ukraine and the US Mexico border others are more General issues such as education crime and the economy although Cala Harris only emerged as the Democratic candidate quite late into the election cycle her time as vice president thankfully makes it easy to keep track of her policies for the sake of Simplicity we're going to be talking a lot about the policies of the Biden Administration she served under but expand to her own positions when she holds differing or contradictory views this might take a little longer but it is what it is Mr Trump is obviously a lot easier as we can simply refer to his own time in office in general we did our best to pull directly from the campaigns or direct statements from both candidates when this wasn't possible we either referred to specific experts or used previous policies from their administrations as the next best thing viewers should also keep in mind that the headwriter of this project is Australian which is designed to maintain another layer of impartiality with all of that out of the way let's get started our first and by far biggest topic is on the economy and after about 5 minutes of research we quickly realized that we were woefully out of our depth this is why we Enlisted the help of Jasper Ahad a macroeconomics analyst working for the Australian treasury their work was then checked by another analyst within the treasury who had previously specialized in specifically monitoring the United States economy in general Democratic administrations favor growing the economy through expanded family-based social welfare policy to grow the working population they also like to provide industrial subsidies for key Industries such as semiconductors electric vehicles and steel on the other hand Republican administrators aim to grow the economy by imposing import tariffs to incentivize domestic production reducing taxes on businesses and individuals and cutting back on social welfare spending focusing on family centered welfare the Harris Administration will continue the Biden Legacy of expanding the child tax credit and other paid and family medical leave initiatives to get more working adults into the economy the thinking is that as many as 5 million adults are not working due to child care constraints and by paying for these initiatives The Government Can incentivize these people to get back into the workforce without having to worry about child care Harris has also promised to build 3 million new homes for middle-class households push for a federal ban on price gouging for food items and has proposed a $25,000 grant for firsttime buyers these will be funded by a larger corporate tax and a higher tax on high income earners which will offset these gains to GDP slightly however this is expected to have a net positive effect on G GDP and inflation going forward with economists projecting real GDP growth to increase by as much as 1% in late 2026 meanwhile inflation would be expected to increase by a peak of 0.2 additional percentage points in 2028 before returning to normal in 2030 while both parties will be more protectionist against China going forward the Harris Administration will be focusing on subsidi of key strategic Industries such as semiconductors EVs and Manufacturing crossing over to the red cor and one of Trump's biggest economic achievements was the passing of the 2017 tax cuts and jobs act among other things this has lowered the corporate tax rate to 21% a move which would see corporate profits immediately increase by 6.4% and corporate tax revenue dropped by 45.2% as a result of the tax cuts and jobs act GDP is projected to grow between 06 and 1% by 2027 although this growth is heavily concentrated at the top end of the economy in his proposed second term Trump has led with a much more radically protectionist trade platform even going as far as proposing a 10% tariff on All Imports to the US while this remains a very real possibility a more likely scenario is an Administration that enforces targeted tariffs against the EU and China more tariffs themselves would benefit specific domestic Industries such as manufacturing and agriculture as foreign companies would immediately become far less competitive within the United States alternatively a universal import tariff would have have immediate politically unpopular consequences including inflationary pressures and a substantial negative impact on GDP for the US this could mean an additional 6 percentage points of inflation and a peak decrease in Real GDP of approximately 1.8% by 2028 on a global scale economists project a 10% Universal tariff within the United States would see world GDP drop by 3% lower by the end of the decade in a scenario where tariffs are limited to the EU and China the US economy would still face challenges but these are largely mitigated by the expansion of the aformentioned Trump era tax cuts and jobs act real GDP growth in this scenario Peaks at around 6% of additional real GDP growth in 2027 as more people have more income in their pockets however inflation would be expected to rise due to both increased costs from tariffs and the larger money supply from lower taxes in this scenario inflation would Peak at around3 additional percentage points in 2028 before it return to normal in 2033 in the long term however Trump's limitation of immigration will lead to overall lower rates of real GDP growth as the working age population in the US will shrink relative to its non-working population we're not going to get into this too much now as we'll go more in depth on immigration policy a bit later in a statistica poll from July this year it was found that inflation and prices were the single most important issue for us voters going into the election with this in mind it seems as if economists than themselves are not nearly as concerned writing about this difference in perception Claudia a former Federal Reserve Economist writes quote a far more productive use of our time is to try and understand why people are extra gloomy now the key word is extra economists would agree that all else being equal the 16% increase in overall prices from January 2021 through March 2023 would be cause for gloom but all else is not equal unemployment has been under 4% for more than 2 years while median wages are up 18% and more for low-wage workers and even with higher prices consumer spending is up 11% in nearly every major category including food at restaurants as our macroeconomics analysist would later translate contrary to public perception the US economy is actually doing really well right now and most people are better off than they were pre pandemic however consumers haven't tended to feel better off as the cost of essential goods and services have grown alongside wages this isn't to say there isn't a subsection of people who are genuinely worse off post pandemic the working class especially have been particularly shafted as increased housing costs and higher credit card interest tends to hit lower income households the hardest housing prices increasing 47% since the pandemic have also made it difficult for renters to break into the housing market leaving another group feeling left behind in an otherwise strong economy for specifically housing the Biden Administration attempted to use federal grants to incentivize states and cities to loosen land use regulation to build more housing this is along with a $258 billion budget proposal for 20125 which is designed to make it easier for people to become homeowners president Trump didn't pursue quite as many policies to reduce the cost of housing during his term although he did propose budget cuts to programs that provided housing assistance and subsidies Mr Trump did however create an opportunity Zone Program which was designed to encourage businesses to invest in lower inome neighborhoods a program which saw mixed results going forward Trump has proposed building 10 New Freedom cities on federal Lan to tackle the housing crisis for Americans who might be concerned with the nation's enormous deficit you won't find Solutions among the two major parties as both are expected to raise the budget deficit in the short term with no real plans to cut down on spending the difference is where the money comes from with Democrats aiming to raise revenue from business taxes and from the additional growth driven by their spending on family welfare Republicans meanwhile aim to raise revenue from increase tariffs and decrease spending on both social safety benefits and climate related Provisions which leads us nicely into our next section we now move on to climate change and the environment this is another one of those topics which left us a little out of our depth which is why we Enlisted the help of climate scientist Kyle Buffington from the Oregon State University to double check our work both candidates have very different track records when it comes to environmental policy with Harris Express ing a commitment to make the nation Net Zero by 2050 and Trump opting to put aside climate concerns in favor of attaining energy Independence to start with the blue Corner the biggest climate package passed during Harris's time as vice president was the 2022 inflation reduction act this included the largest Federal climate change investment in US history putting aside 3 trillion over a 10-year period Biden's term has also seen funding shifted away from fossil fuel subsidies and towards incentives for green energy Biden's Administration would also roll back a number of policies from Trump's first term which reinstated Wildlife protections blocked the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline and halted extraction of oil and gas on Federal Land Harris herself has an extensive history of backing environmental bills and during her run for president in 2019 she proposed an incredibly ambitious $10 trillion plan to move the US to a 100% renewable power grid by 2030 you can comfortably bet another 10 trilli and that this won't happen but Harris certainly has a track record of pushing for ambitious climate reform in the Red Corner president Trump's policies are much more economic in nature and climate scientists have generally considered him to be dismissive of the man-made impact on the environment soon after the beginning of his first term Trump implemented his America First Energy plan this plan would allow Drilling in nearly all us Waters pulled the us out of the Paris climate Accord and relaxed emission standards on new vehicles over his first term Trump rolled back over 100 environmental regulations and has promised to roll back many more in his proposed second term according to an analysis by carbon brief the previous policies of neither Trump nor Biden would put the US on track to become Net Zero by 2050 with this in mind according to the US government's own calculation of the social cost of carbon the expenses related to enacting climate policies could still be much lower than the cost of climate in action the social cost of carbon is an EPA metric which is simp the expected societal cost through things like crop shortages extreme weather events and human health problems as a result of man-made climate change using these estimates if Trump decided to roll back Biden's environmental policies the added social cost would be as much as 900 billion dollars by the end of this decade speaking to the policies of both the previous Trump and Biden administrations our affer mentioned climate scientist would State quote neither Trump nor Biden's policies would get the country to net zero emissions by 2050 theas reason for this is that the degree of policy change would be far too great to achieve in such a short time especially for the us when you consider factors like energy Agriculture and transportation the problem of carbon emissions becomes so multifaceted that you can't just fix the country overnight the Biden Administration would certainly help to mitigate some of the runaway emissions we've experienced over the past few decades but in all likelihood the US would continue to struggle to make a full green transition on the other hand a trump Administration could mean the development of policies and deals that have irrevocable consequences on the nation's carbon footprint none of this bodess well for the future of the planet's climate in terms of firearms policy Harris has long taken a stance of tightening federal gun laws while Trump has taken something of a business's usual approach starting with the Biden administration his time in office saw the government pass the bipartisan safer communities act a law which expanded background checks closed a number of loopholes for purchasing firearms and funded a number of Crisis inter vention programs although this might sound relatively unimpressive for supporters of stricter gun laws it was actually the first federal gun control legislation enacted in 28 years Cala Harris herself has also voiced her support for mandatory buyback programs for assault weapons an IL defined term which varies widely between jurisdictions President Trump as we mentioned took a much more hands-off approach during his time in office with the only restrictions he implemented being a ban on bump stocks following pressure after the 17 Las Vegas shooting that same year the Trump Administration also rolled back an Obama era policy which would revoke the right to gun ownership if a person was receiving Social Security checks for mental illness although not featured on his campaign website Trump had previously promised to roll back all gun related restrictions imposed by the Biden Administration after assuming office we now come to education another issue that is very much taken a backseat among both candidates Harris especially doesn't give us much to go off so we'll mostly be leaning on her time as Biden's VP the Biden Administration saw the Department of Education hand out nearly $122 billion to K to 12 schools in an effort to catch up from sliding academic standards during the pandemic the complications of covid era isolation policies led to reading in math test scores seeing a sizable drop between 2019 and 2021 and this 122 billion relief package although enormous still stands as Biden's most sizable Legacy when it comes to education aside from this Biden's Administration has also been opposed to federally funding for-profit charter schools and providing tax incentives for parents who send their children to private schools moving on to higher education and Biden has approved over 150 billion in student debt relief although in 2023 the Supreme Court struck down a proposal for another 400 billion the Biden Administration has also launched a plan which was designed to make it easier to pay off student debt and eliminates cases where interest outpaces loan repayments the Trump Administration saw much more of a focus on school choice a policy which offered tax incentives for parents sending their children to private schools this policy would also relax the requirements for colleges to receive federal funding meaning these institutions would no longer need to prove that their graduates meant any debt to earnings ratios after entering the job market unlike Harris Trump also seems to have a more specific Vision when it comes to education in his proposed second term his plan calls for a certification program for teachers who Embrace patriotic values and has proposed abolishing teacher tenure a policy which prevents teachers from being fired for any non-work related reason Trump is also pushing for the reduction of administration roles within education as well as adopting a parental Bill of Rights Trump's plan for a second term also includes cutting Federal funding for any schools that teach quote critical race theory gender ideology or other inappropriate racial sexual or political content on to our children crime is yet another topic the Trump and Biden administrations have approached very differently during their own terms to start with President Trump he's often stated to have a tough on crime approach to law enforcement and his administration oversaw more Federal executions than any president in the last 120 years the Trump Administration also gave a fair amount of leniency to police departments and halted the Obama era practice of investigating and issuing public reports on found shortcomings during his presidency Mr Trump also assigned the bipartisan First Step act a bill designed to expand job training and early release programs for convicted criminals Trump's cannabis policy has been somewhat inconsistent as although he voiced support for allowing states to legalize the drug his administration's Hardline stance on drugs has often seen cannabis caught in the crossfire moving back into the blue corner and a big focus of the Biden administration's crime agenda has been the subject of police reform Biden has directed federal law enforcement agencies to restrict the use of no knock warrants and chokeholds and signed an executive order to set up a National Database of police officers who have consistently committed misconduct in his 20122 budget Biden also proposed to double the funding for the doj cops program in an effort to expand the size of many police departments the Biden Administration has also overseen the lowest rate of violent crime in nearly 50 years however we're not qualified to say why this is the case or if Biden's policies had anything to do with it in October 2022 Biden pardoned all federal marijuana possession charges and launched an inquiry as to whether it should be reclassified under us law as for Camala Harris viewers will likely know that she previously served as the district attorney of San Francisco from 2004 to 2011 Harris herself is a self-described progressive prosecutor although detractors have criticized her tough on crime track record in recent years Harris has changed her position on Canabis legalization and has pushed for the drug to be legalized on a federal level immigration is perhaps one of the topics to cover as the policies of both of our candidates aren't as straightforward as many would believe to start in the Red Corner the presidency of Donald Trump saw a substantial drop in the rate of illegal immigration into the United States with this in mind the population of illegal immigrants within the country remained about the same the Trump Administration would also propose a bill that would have har the number of green cards issued per year however the bill never made it past the Senate fast forward to March 2020 near the start of the co pandemic and the Trump Administration would inv roke title 42 although a statute designed as a public health measure title 42 allowed us authorities to streamline the expulsion of migrants at the US border nearly 400,000 migrants were detained and expelled between its introduction and when Trump left the White House the Trump administration's immigration policies have often received criticism from human rights groups for the treatment of migrants at the border previously a 2019 law would force Asylum Seekers to wait in Mexico while awaiting their US immigration hearings a policy which was estimated by one charity organization to have led to 1,500 migrants being mistreated kidnapped or sexually abused another Zer tolerance policy of illegal border crossings would also lead to 3,900 children being separated from their parents between 2017 and 2021 although horrifying to Trump's detractors supporters of these policies have pointed to the Trump administration's very low rate of illegal immigration during his term a figure which contrasts very sharply to Joe Biden's time in office the start of Joe Biden's term saw the reversal of many Trump era immigration policies Trump's declared National Emergency on the southern border was ended and the ban on travel from a number of Muslim countries would also be lifted shortly after taking office Biden would pledge 4 billion in Aid to a number of developing South American nations in an attempt to address the root causes of illegal immigration although ending the Trump administrations remain in Mexico policy Biden would opt to keep the co era title 42 statute a decision which would EXP spell over 2 million people until its expiration in May 2023 critics of this decision argued that the policy allowed the United States to expel Asylum Seekers without any legal process despite this Biden's time in office has seen much higher levels of Border activity than during his predecessor's term this reached a peak in December 2023 when border crossings from Mexico reached an all-time high for the country topping at nearly 250,000 arrests in that month alone around a month after this High Watermark a B partisan group of senators proposed a border bill which was designed to sharply decrease the number of border crossings the bill even proposed that the Border would be immediately closed if authorities experienced more than 5,000 encounters a day over several days although endorsed by the national border patrol Council a large border patrol Union the bill was ultimately blocked by the Republican members in the Senate exactly why is a matter of debate with some claiming that the bill did not go far enough in addressing illegal immigration and others believe beling it was an attempt to stop Biden from Shoring up one of his weakest policy positions in an election year we don't know what to make of these claims but we left our list of sources in the description for anyone who wants to look into it themselves in any case fast forward to June 2024 and Biden would sign an executive order which would shut the border down if Crossings averaged more than 2,500 a day although criticized by more Progressive members of his party the order immediately saw border crossings Dro to a 3-year low Harris herself has not not deviated much from Biden's immigration policies but has long remained one of Trump's biggest critics for the treatment of migrants during his term with all of this in mind should president Trump be reelected he has promised to reinstate article 42 and his remain in Mexico policy he is also vowed to detain all migrants crossing the border illegally and pledged to conduct in his own words the largest deportation effort in US history Mr Trump has also stated that he would end automatic citizenship for children born with in the United States however this will likely come with a number of legal challenges we now turn to the topic of health and admittedly the American Health Care system was so confusing that this was the only section where we compromised on our don't let an American touch the script rule for non-americans we first need to learn three basic terms the first is Medicare which is a federally funded and operated insurance program that assists the elderly in Saving on health care costs this isn't to be confused with Medicaid a state and federal funded insurance plan which is operated by each state and is designed to help lower inome citizens afford necessary medications the third term is the Affordable Care Act a law passed in 2010 this law provided lower income citizens with tax credits to afford health care coverage and expanded Medicaid benefits to more people in the states that opted into them it also required insurance companies to cover individuals with pre-existing conditions like cancer asthma and diabetes to start with Kamala we don't actually have her campaign stance as of time of writing so we're just going to go with the stance of her party the official Democratic party platform includes references to all parts of the Health Care system that we went over previously including establishing access to Affordable Health Care as a right for all citizens instead of pushing for universal healthcare the Biden Administration initially campaigned to create a public option for health insurance basically the US government would make their own healthcare insurance option and with its sizable bargaining p it would theoretically have more sway to negotiate better prices as we now know this didn't happen and many suspect that this is because the health industry is the largest lobbying sector in the country unsurprisingly Health insurers don't like the idea of the government making their own insurance option while having no obligation to turn a profit while the Biden Administration wasn't able to complete its goal it was able to pass the inflation reduction act which included a lot of healthc care reform some of the bigger achievements of this bill included allowing Medicare to negotiate the price of popular drugs for the first time and capping out of pocket spending on drugs at $2,000 a year it should be noted that the spending Cap won't actually come into effect until 2025 Camala Harris herself has previously been supportive of a single-payer Health Care system this pretty much just takes the already existing Medicare system and makes it available to everyone not just citizens over the age of 65 supporters of such a system state that it would greatly increase the government government's bargaining power to deliver cheaper Health Care would save tens of thousands of lives per year and would reduce the collective cost of Health Care within the country by a significant margin opponents of such a system argue that increased medical coverage will likely lead to longer wait times for patients and a lot more money spent on preventative health care if it's anything like nations with similar schemes like Spain or Australia a universal healthare system would be mandatory while citizens who want shorter weight times and fluffier pillows can get PR Insurance anyway however with Biden's failure to push through this much less ambitious healthcare plan adopting a single-payer Health Care system seems even less likely meanwhile Trump's official platform doesn't get too much into detail on Healthcare but it's enough to sink our teeth into Mr Trump's official stance includes promising not to cut a single dollar from Medicare increasing competition and choice in prescription drug options to lower prices and preventing illegal immigrants from using Medicare and other Healthcare programs it should be noted that outside of migrants classified under DACA illegal immigrants have no way of using any federal or state-funded medical programs like the Affordable Care Act Medicaid or Medicare it should also be mentioned that during the 2020 pandemic Mr Trump and his administration were fighting in court to invalidate the entirety of the Affordable Care Act which would have left over 100 million Americans without health insurance Mr Trump has attempted to repeal the Affordable Care Act on multiple occasions and many suspect that these attempts will continue into a second term during Mr Trump's first term he attempted to replace the Affordable Care Act with the American healthc Care Act of 2017 this was essentially just a watered down version of the Affordable Care Act research by two political scientists from MIT and Stanford showed the American Healthcare Act was quote the most unpopular piece of major legislation Congress has considered in decades it should be noted that the Affordable Care Act was initially unpopular when it was first introduced in 2010 but more recent polls have indicated that it now has a 57% approval rating Healthcare has been an area that neither party has made significant Headway in in recent years although both Trump and Biden administrations have pushed for increased transparency when it comes to the costs associated with hospital stays as an extension of the health section we also have abortion a topic in which our candidates also have differing opinions starting in the Red Corner president Trump has taken credit for overturning roie Wade as the Supreme Court decision was helped in large part by three appointments made during his term this led to individual states being able to adopt their own policies on abortion during his time in office the Trump Administration also restricted taxpayer dollars for facilities which provided abortions offered abortion referrals or shared space with abortion providers in 2018 his government would also shift grant money away from Obama era sexual health programs and towards abstinence education the Biden administration's stance toward abortion is on the other end of the the Spectrum and has pushed for a complete restoration of roie Wade in 2021 the Biden Administration ended a long-standing restriction on the sale of abortion drugs through mail although this didn't apply to every state Camala Harris herself has been a vocal supporter of expanded abortion rights and has maintained a 100% approval rating by the Planned Parenthood action fund a pro-abortion advocacy group an interesting bit of History within the United States is the Mexico City policy a Reagan Era law that blocks US Federal funding for all NOS that provide abortion counseling or Advocate to decriminalize abortion the funniest part of this law is that ever since it was introduced in 1985 it's been thrown out under every Democratic president and reinstated under every Republican president both presidents Trump and Biden continued this tradition under their own administrations foreign policy is such a Monumental topic which could very easily make up its own video so we'll try to focus on some of the most relevant points leading up to this election to start chronologically the Trump presidency followed an America first stance and has taken policies which some have characterized as semi- isolationist notable Milestones over Trump's first term include his historic visit to North Korea the draw down of troops from within the Middle East and the US withdrawal from the UN Human Rights Council the trans-pacific partnership and the Paris climate agreement the Trump Administration also oversaw the death of Islamic State leader Abu bakar Al bagadi and the assassination of Iranian General kasum salomani Trump also quite famously pulled the United States out of the Iran nuclear deal undoing what many considered to be one of the most significant foreign policy Milestones of the Obama Administration Joe Biden's foreign policy in contrast has been described as more collaborative and pragmatic which is perhaps unsurprising for someone who is Chairman of the Senate of Foreign Relations Committee as early as 2001 the Biden Administration would rejoin the aformentioned Partnerships and agreements which were withdrawn under Trump's presidency Biden did however maintain stances which were held by his predecessor which included a desire to limit Chinese influence and the reduction of a US military presence within the Middle East Joe Biden quite famously oversaw the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan in August of 2021 ending the 20-year occupation to the mixed sentiment of us voters historically Cala Harris has differed very little from Joe Biden's foreign policy positions the two biggest topics ahead of the election however have been the conflict between Israel and Hamas and Russia's invasion of Ukraine on the Israel and Hamas conflict Joe Biden's Administration has been consistently supportive of the nation of Israel and have vetoed several un Security Council resolutions calling for humanitarian ceasefires the Biden Administration has sent over 100 weapons shipments to Israel since the outbreak of the war as the conflict has progressed however Biden has become more critical of Israel's military presence in Gaza a campaign which has claimed the lives of tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians Biden has since blocked a number of weapons shipments to Israel the official stance of the Biden Administration is an eventual two-state solution for the region once again Harris's position is more or less an extension of Joe Biden's promising a full commitment to the sovereignty of Israel while expressing concern for the conditions within Gaza Trump's stance is also very much pro-israel and has been since the start of his time in office the Trump Administration officially recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel in 2017 and said he could live with either a one-state or two-state solution speaking to the most recent conflict in June of this year president Trump would say that the United States should quote let them go and finish the job let them Israel go and let them finish the job president Trump would also state that Hamas would not have attacked Israel in the first place if he was in power moving on to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the Biden Administration has been extremely supportive of Ukrainian sovereignty sending around 175 billion in military aid as of time of writing talking about his stance on Ukraine in March of this year Biden would State quote Putin of Russia is on the March invading Ukraine and sewing chaos throughout Europe and Beyond if anybody in this room thinks Putin will stop at Ukraine I assure you he will not but Ukraine can stop Putin if we stand with Ukraine and provide the weapons it needs to defend itself that is all Ukraine is asking they are not asking for American soldiers we could not find any instance where Camala Harris has contradicted Biden's stance towards Ukraine president Trump however has been critical of the Biden administration's Ukraine policy and has stated that other NATO members have not paid their fair share of Ukrainian Aid whether this is true depends on a matter of perspective the United States has undoubtedly provided more an aid to Ukraine than any other country by a very wide margin however it only ranks 17th highest when measuring as a share of GDP Mr Trump has previously stated that should he win a second term he would meet with both Vladimir zalinski and Vladimir Putin and end the conflict within 24 hours it is not clear what Trump means by this but commentators have assumed that this would mean Ukraine giving up territory in exchange for a ceasefire much like the Israel Hamas conflict president Trump has also stated that Russia would never have invaded if he had been president at the time viewers should keep in mind that our breakdowns of what a future Trump or Cala presidency would look like are purely based on the best information we have we didn't want to be the first to tell you this but very often politicians don't end up following through on their promises for one reason or another with this in mind if you find that we missed any important details in our breakdown or believe that we missed out on any important context we'd like to welcome you to let us know in the comments even the experts we reached out to mentioned that they often found
