CPR and AED Training

Scene Safety

  • Survey the Scene: Before approaching a victim, ensure the scene is safe (e.g., no traffic, active threats).
  • Unsafe Scene: Call 911 from a safe distance if unsafe.

Checking Responsiveness

  • Approach victim, tap shoulder, and shout "Are you okay?"
  • If no response:
    • In hospital: Press code button.
    • Outside hospital: Call 911.

Assessing Breathing and Pulse

  • Check for signs of breathing or pulse:
    • Look for chest rise and fall.
    • Feel for a carotid pulse on the neck.
  • Agonal Breath: Considered a precursor to cardiac arrest.

CPR Process

  • Priority Shift: CAB (Circulation, Airway, Breathing)
  • Hands-only CPR: Compressions without mouth-to-mouth.
  • CPR Technique:
    • Hand Placement: Heel of hand in the center of the chest.
    • Align shoulders with hands, lock elbows.
    • Compress 2 inches deep; allow for chest recoil.
    • Perform 30 compressions, then provide 2 breaths.
    • Use a pocket mask for breaths if available.

AED Use

  • AED Activation: Power on the AED and follow the prompts.
  • Pad Placement: High right and low left on the exposed chest.
  • Shock Delivery: Clear the victim and press the shock button if advised.

Compressions and Breathing

  • Rate: 100-120 compressions per minute.
  • Breaths: 1-second duration, careful not to hyperinflate.
  • Continue CPR: Until help arrives, victim shows signs of life, or you are too exhausted.

Special Considerations

  • Good Samaritan Laws: Protect those rendering aid.
  • Pediatric CPR:
    • Child (age 1 to puberty): Same as adult, focus on breaths first.
    • Pad Placement on Children: Use adult pads if necessary, ensure they don’t touch.
    • Infant CPR: Use two fingers for compressions.

Recovery Position

  • If signs of life return, place the victim on their side to prevent vomiting.
