Overview
This lecture explains how to organize and track literature for a literature review using an Excel matrix, including what information to extract and how to filter data efficiently.
Setting Up the Literature Matrix
- Create an Excel spreadsheet with columns for research details.
- Print and organize articles in physical binders by topic for quick access.
- All matrix content is cut and pasted directly from article PDFs for accuracy and ease.
Key Columns in the Matrix
- Column A lists binder/topic names for article organization.
- Include publication year, author, and theoretical framework to enable filtering by research approach.
- Note the research method (quantitative, qualitative, meta-analysis, literature review) and research design.
- Record target population, country of study, sample size, and data collection instruments.
- Summarize the study's findings and suggestions for future research, usually from abstract and discussion sections.
Using Excel Filters for Analysis
- Apply filters under the Data tab to quickly sort studies by method, framework, or instrument.
- Filtering can isolate quantitative studies or further narrow to specific designs like correlational studies.
- Filters also help identify studies using particular instruments (e.g., Psychological Capital Questionnaire 24-item).
- Easily return to the full dataset by clearing filters.
Practical Benefits and Sharing
- The matrix allows fast cross-checking of studies and easy access to original articles.
- Template can be shared for othersβ use; contact the speaker via video comments or email for a cleaned version.
Key Terms & Definitions
- Theoretical Framework β The underlying theory guiding the research.
- Quantitative Study β Research involving numerical data and statistical analysis.
- Correlational Study β Examines the relationship between two or more variables.
- Instrument β A tool or questionnaire used for data collection.
Action Items / Next Steps
- Consider setting up your own literature review matrix using the described columns.
- Practice using Excel filters to sort and analyze your research articles.
