How to Craft a Winning Resume

An average recruiter doesn't looks at a resume for more than 7 seconds. Earlier, I used to think this is bullsh*t. But.... Hi guys! I'm Nishant Chahar. I'm an ex-Microsoft software engineer currently building Tayyari and Algoprep. And whike hiring a web developer intern for Tayyari, I've gone through 4752 resumes and finally I shotlisted only 51 resumes. And while doing this, I realized how precise the 7 second number is. And while I was shortlisting these resumes, I noted down the good things and the bad things. The good things done in those 51 resumes 7, rest of the resumes that were missing things or doing wrong & this video is all about that. Also, there's a secret template at the end, which won't require money to copy. So, do wait until the end. And listen to the video carefully, bring a pen and paper. Write the pointers that I'm saying otherwise you'll do the same mistake, you'll not get shortlisted then you'll cry that, I'm not getting a job. Also, we've launched DevPrep. Classes have started but if you're watching this video, then you can use 'last chance' coupon code, you can still enroll. course is going to be very amazing. Trust me & the one who's teaching is - Jasbir. Tech lead at Cars 24 and along with it, he has more than 7 years of teaching experience. Let's not delay anymore. Firstly, let's move on the most important point. Firstly, we're going to talk about the things I hated most because recruiters are going to hate you a lot for these things, if you did these mistakes. Firstly, comes too much text. If your resume doesn't even have spaces in between its very text cluttered, you can see an example on screen. If you see something like this, then nobody will read the resume. Because, neither anything is on bold nor any keywords are marked. There's only lot of text here. And by looking at so much text, you just want to..... So, firstly you should put important things. You shouldn't fill much text and there should be enough spacing so that you can differentiate two paragraphs. You should always bold the keywords. Second mistake, that was done most was - there wasn't any project link added. They just have added, what projects they have done. Now, the problem here is - People might ahve copied it from somewhere else. And you can't figure out until the link is provided. So, I was opening all the links. Many of them had put Github links and many people had put actual hosted projects. But if you're putting your github project link, the most important thing is - to add the description of the project. A huge mistake that I saw, whenever someone added a link of github when I opened that link, the only thing I saw on the read me file was - MPM installed and how to install - when you make a create react app or any particular app I was hiring for a developer intern, then most of them had used Create React app the instructions that are given as it is, they've not mentioned what their project is doing there weren't any demos and all these things looked like a red flag because when you only have few minutes to judge a person, you'll not read his code you'll see that, how the actual implementation is. And the pointers implemented - did he or she understand that how did they exactly do it? When these things are missing, then its a major red flag & if your resume has been seen for more than 7 seconds in 1st screening even then your resume can be rejected. Second part, if your project is hosted then it is amazing. Then nothing can be better than that. People can go there and actually use it but with hosted projects a big problem was that, they were asking to log in. So, someone will not give their log in details directly. You should have a bypass or you should directly add a link where they can explore the features. So, this was 2nd point. It was very very very important. Do keep this in mind. Third and I cannot tell this, whenever someone releases a form whenever someone asks a resume, firstly its written there - add a shareable link. And people still don't add a shareable link. People put a normal link of their resume that they had uplaoded on google or one drive & its not shareable. When you'll open it then it'll ask for permission. And no one will send you a mail to get permission, if they've to hire you. So, this is your responsibility to give them a shareable link - this was third important thing, the one with which I got annoyed a lot & a direct red flag. Last but not the least, I saw many copied projects in people's resumes and I got an exact youtube video. When I typed that project, if you're doing something like this the try to add some originality. If 5-10-15-20 people have the same project there was a crypto currency converter, every other person had made it. Means, I cannot even tell you that from UI elements to color scheme, everything was exact. If they had changed a bit it would have been a green flag but everything was just copied. No effort was put & people're crying that I'm not getting a job. How will you get a job? Do some hard work on it. If you're applying to any place, do remember these 4 points on your resume. What people hadn't done & most of the mistakes they had done, after that now let's come to on those things, which I genuinely love that people did with their resume. I'll show some samples with them - the decent resume or a good resume, that was there. By blocking out their names, but they were pretty good. Let's talk one by one, what were the things that a recruiter would like or I liked. Firstly, I told that if you had added a demo video of your project or live URL/link for checking it out. Its the best. If a hiring manager would be watching this, at the end of the day, if all your rounds are cleared or if a recruiter is also checking out. It has been scanned from the starting ATS, it has reached the recruiter & he has reached the projects. Then it'll create a very good impression. Same was with me, all the 51 resumes I shortlisted - either they had added the live link of the project or they had explained properly on Github what they had made. And what tech stack have they used, how will it be useful, what are its benefits XYZ but they've explained anything & everything, which you should also do. Second thing, standing out was bold keywords so that, if someone is skimming through your resume within 7 sec, 5 sec, 2 sec then they should see the keywords. If I'm hiring for a react intern or a Next.js intern, if I see Next.js or React in the resume then I'll stop there. Then I'll check out the projects, if this is not in bold or the skill section isn't at top then I might just skip that resume. Even if you've made those projects using the technologies I'm looking for but I'll still skip because I didn't see it in first glance. Along with this, all your important things should be in the form of points not paragraphs. Reading points is easier than reading paragraphs. Whenever you're looking things in a hurry, you find points / pointers or keywords you never read the entire paragraphs. Now, even when you make notes, you do the same thing that you underline important words/ keywords when you gave board exams, we used to do this so, when you have to do these in resume, then where do you forget it. Do it. So, these were important things that are - DOs and DON'Ts. When I skimmed through so many resumes I understood that & along with this, there're many important pointers, factors that you need to keep in mind when you're making your resume. Firstly, three people are going to look through your resume. Firstly, ATS - your resume should be ATS friendly. All these details will be added in the document at the end. Second one would be recruiter - they're going to skim through your resume. If they're hiring for a particular skill, then put your skills at the top. Or you've work experience, you've worked in a company then put your work experience at the top. If you don't have work experience, then add your projects after skills. Put your education backkground at the top only when your college is very good or your CGPA is very good so that a good impression is created. So, we need to keep all our important things on top so that the first thing that we see, creates a good impression in the person's mind. Third and last but not the least, very important is Hiring Manage who is going to see your resume, so according to these 3 people you need to tailor your resume. Do not put the same resume everywhere. If you're applying for a web developer intern or full time role, then put more number of web development projects you need add more of those technologies. If you're applying for back end developer, then put more number of back end projects if you're applying for a full stack then you need to add more of full stack. If you're doing for data science, then you've to put data science projects. If you're applying for data science role & you've not written Python, R or you've not written data science related things on which you work & you'll write there - React, Next.js then what benefit will it give. People had done same things, same mistakes. So, we need to keep this in mind. Firstly, skill section, then education section along with it, you can later add your projects & above it you can add your experiences I've told all these things in an earlier video. The link would be coming in 'i' button - you can watch it. You'll know how to make a resume. Rest, here is my resume. All the things I've talked about, all the pointers have been added. I've also made amazing doc for you. I've also added two resume templates. You can use any of them. The link will be in the description. Do check out. Use it & always remember that if you want to get hired then you need to put effort the other person won't make effort for you. So, you should put in more effort, to make other person's life easy. the more you make their life easy, the chances of your hiring will increase more. And if you like the video, then do like it, subscribe the channel if you haven't until now & I'll see you in the next one with some more amazing content. Bye!
