Introduction to ADDIE in Instructional Design
What is ADDIE?
Acronym for: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation
Used to be a rigid set process but now is a flexible framework
Essential for understanding the role of an instructional designer
Helps in developing a structured instructional design process
A - Analysis
Purpose:
Understand the problem, audience, and solution
Key Tasks:
Needs Assessment:
Determine if training will solve the problem
Learner Analysis:
Conduct user interviews, create user personas
Job Task Analysis:
Break down tasks within a job to design targeted training
Context Analyses:
Ensure alignment between instructional and performance context
Noted as the most important yet often overlooked phase
D - Design
Tasks:
Convert analysis results into a structured design
Outputs:
Learning objectives
Design document (incorporates research findings and design methodologies)
Storyboard, script, facilitator guide
Focus:
Traditional IDs focus on this phase but modern roles often combine this with development
D - Development
Purpose:
Turn design documents into final products
Tasks:
Use authoring tools like Storyline or Captivate
Develop facilitator guide into a polished document
Create slide decks and other learning materials
Most common phase along with Design in modern instructional design
I - Implementation
Purpose:
Deliver the learning experience
Tasks:
Upload learning products to Learning Management Systems (LMS)
Enroll users
Facilitate sessions (handled by facilitators, not typically IDs)
Observe sessions for improvements and smooth rollout
E - Evaluation
Model Used:
Kirkpatrick's Model of Evaluation
Key Questions:
Do people like the learning experience? (Reaction)
Are they learning something new? (Learning)
Are they applying what they learned on the job? (Behavior)
Is this improving organizational performance? (Results)
Conclusion
ADDIE's balanced focus on all phases enhances instructional design
Modern IDs often focus mainly on Design and Development
Specialization in any phase is possible but comprehensive skill set in all phases is highly demanded
