Module 4: CompTIA IT Fundamentals (ITF+) Course

Overview

  • Module 4 of the ITF+ course consists of five units:
    1. Networking Concepts
    2. Connecting to a Network
    3. Secure Web Browsing
    4. Using Shared Storage
    5. Using Mobile Devices
  • Detailed topics and timestamps available in the video description.

Unit 1: Networking Concepts

Network Components

  • Clients and Servers: Clients are devices like laptops, desktops we use daily. Servers provide some service, e.g., hosting a website.
  • Network Types:
    • PAN (Personal Area Network): Smallest network, typically within arm's reach (e.g., a printer or phone connected to a computer).
    • LAN (Local Area Network): Typically within a building or nearby locations; can involve hundreds of devices.
    • WAN (Wide Area Network): Connects multiple LANs, often across cities or countries, using long-range wireless communication.

Network Media

  • Nodes and Hosts: Similar to clients and servers.
  • Wired Data Connections: Uses cables like copper (Cat 5, Cat 6) and fiber optic.
  • Wireless Data Connections: Includes standards like Bluetooth and Wi-Fi (802.11 standards).
  • WAN Links: The connection point on a router that connects to the internet.

Unit 2: Connecting to a Network

Wireless Standards

  • Covers 802.11 standards (A, B, G, N, AC, AX) detailing frequency, speed, and range.

Configuring Network Devices

  • Access Point (AP): Device that allows wireless devices to connect to a wired network.
  • Wireless Client Configuration: Connecting devices like laptops to Wi-Fi.
  • Cabled Enterprise Network Access: Usage of enterprise-grade switches for connectivity.
  • Wireless Enterprise Network Access: Usage of enterprise-grade access points (e.g., Cisco).

Unit 3: Secure Web Browsing

Using Free and Open Networks

  • Risks associated with open Wi-Fi networks, potential for data interception.
  • Use of VPNs for secure browsing in untrusted networks.

Browser Compatibility and Security

  • Importance of using compatible browsers.
  • Risks associated with cookies and pop-up windows.
  • Browser settings for disabling autofill and clearing cache.

Types of Firewalls

  • Software-based: Integrated in operating systems like Windows Defender.
  • Hardware-based: Physical devices in a network for enhanced security.

Unit 4: Using Shared Storage

Network Printer Sharing

  • Sharing printers in a network via Windows settings.

Network Shares

  • Browsing and accessing network shares and drives using Windows Explorer.
  • Mapping network drives for easier access.

Backups

  • Importance of regular backups (daily, weekly, monthly, off-site).
  • Backup storage types: Local, network-attached, cloud-based.

Unit 5: Using Mobile Devices

Gesture-Based Interaction

  • Touchscreen navigation using gestures like pinching and swiping.

Device Features

  • Kinetics and Screen Orientation: Devices detect movement and adjust screen orientation.
  • Speech Recognition and Hands-Free: Voice commands and hands-free device use.

Security and App Stores

  • Passcode Locks and Remote Wiping: Security features to protect data.
  • App Stores: Platform-specific applications (iOS App Store, Android Play Store).
  • Network Connectivity: Mobile data, Wi-Fi, and airplane mode usage.

Additional Notes

  • Encourage using secure practices when accessing public networks.
  • Regularly update and use reputable sources for applications to avoid malware and security threats.
  • Always test backup systems to ensure restorations are possible and accurate.
