What is Verb Conjugation?

  • Verb: An action word (e.g., run, play, jump)
  • Conjugate: Changing a verb into a different form (e.g., past, future, present)
  • Different verb tenses in English

Tagalog Verb Types

  • Five main types of verbs:
    1. Mag verbs
    2. Ma verbs
    3. Um verbs
    4. In verbs
    5. I verbs
  • Actor-focused vs Object-focused:
    • Actor-focused: Subject is doing the action (e.g., "the boy is playing")
    • Object-focused: Action is done to the subject (e.g., "wash the dishes")

Tagalog Pronouns

  • I - Aku
  • You (singular) - Ka
  • He/She - Sha (gender neutral)
  • They - Sila
  • We (inclusive) - Tayo
  • We (exclusive) - Kami
  • You (plural) - Kayo

Simple Sentence Structure

  • Structure: verb + pronoun
  • Example with cooking:
    • I am cooking: Nagluluto ako
    • You are cooking: Nagluluto ka
    • He/She is cooking: Nagluluto siya
    • They are cooking: Nagluluto sila
    • We (inclusive) are cooking: Nagluluto tayo
    • We (exclusive) are cooking: Nagluluto kami
    • You all are cooking: Nagluluto kayo

Verb Root and Affixes

  • All Tagalog verbs have a root word which is modified to change tense (adding affixes/infixes)
  • Example with "magluto" (to cook)
    • Present: Nagluluto
    • Past: Nagluto
    • Future: Magluluto

Conjugation Patterns

Mag Verbs

  • Examples:
    • Maglakad (to walk) โž” Naglalakรกd
    • Magluto (to cook) โž” Nagluluto
    • Magbasa (to read) โž” Nagbabasa

Ma Verbs

  • Examples:
    • Maligo (to shower) โž” Naliligo
    • Matulog (to sleep) โž” Natutulog
    • Manood (to watch) โž” Nanood

Um Verbs

  • Examples:
    • Kain (to eat) โž” Kumakain
    • Takbo (to run) โž” Tumatakbo
    • Tawa (to laugh) โž” Tumatawa

In Verbs

  • Examples:
    • Gamit (to use) โž” Ginagamit
    • Walis (to sweep) โž” Winawalis

I Verbs

  • Examples:
    • Isara (to close) โž” Isinasara
    • Ibigay (to give) โž” Ibinibigay
    • Itago (to hide) โž” Itinatago

  • My - Ko

New Sentence Structure for In and E Verbs

  • Structure: verb + pronoun + yung + noun
  • Example: Gina-gamit ko yung koche (I am using the car)
