[Music] welcome to America at the turn of the 20th century a fine time with fine bridges such as this the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City so this video is just kind of looking at where America is at the turn of 20th century 1900 where are the Americans in terms of politics in terms of Technology and really just their lifestyles so what's going on some of this for you students might be a review from last year others for the rest of you if it sat under review you should have learned this last year and it's gonna be a bit of what we're gonna be studying in the next few weeks so both our review and a preview so we're getting all sorts of views here today all right so and by a time in 1900 the West which is this great frontier for the last 300 years of American history has in this open space and kind of this great idea of there's still a wild area of America is closed so Native American tribes have been pushed into a variety of reservations the Buffalo that they most of these tribes were using as sustenance are gone and homesteads these farms that are being built land is being given away to any settler that shows up homesteads are cropping up as well as their crops pun intended and you also have barbed wire so not only do you have farms but barbed wire is preventing the free range of cattle three range of people so this West this vast open space is now closed in addition you have out there railroads so by 1900 close to 200 thousand miles of railroads have been built which allows these farmers that are out west to transport their crops transport their goods and transport people not the far mr. transport people but for America to get people out here to move away from the coasts and settle the center and you start seeing places like Ohio becoming more important places like Chicago building from just a little village to great city so the West is closing and we also have oil being discovered so Titusville Pennsylvania 1859 you have the first oil well that's being dug in this picture here you can see barrels in the background of oil and these these wells that are cropping up and of course you drill down into the ground where there is oil the oil shoots out once you struck it so you have these oil gushers and these major oil fields are being discovered all over the u.s. Oklahoma Texas Kansas Illinois and with that petroleum that's being produced people like john d rockefeller making today's money tens of if not 20s if not hundreds of billions of dollars it's powering ships it's powering our economy and in that economy apart from oil you also have steel so steel mills especially those of Andrew Carnegie are cropping up and steel is allowing Americans to build so Carnegie creates these mills that you see here he creates a fantastic beard that one day I hope to have a nice white beard and it allows for America to grow up so not only are we growing out into the West but cities are growing and more people are moving into them so we're going to look a lot of immigration a lot a lot at this urbanization of America that the centers of population are cities and what that means for society what that means for our country and in those cities we have cars we have all sorts of innovations that we'll get into as well politically it's a wild time in America after between this and the Civil War there was a lot we have reconstruction that's going on trying to figure out how to rebuild the south mostly it goes poorly which is why to this day we still have a lot of problems especially with race relations so we'll get into that and with American politics we have this guy William McKinley he's from Ohio and he is elected in 1896 re-elected in 1900 sadly he is assassinated and this guy he might have heard of comes on in Teddy Roosevelt so we're gonna be looking at kind of how both McKinley and Roosevelt ship of shape America and especially with Roosevelt it really he really changes the way both America develops in some ways how American concert conserves and how America starts to move outward so we have moving from this period of both intense war in the south and then trying to rebuild and figure out what's what is America what is that identity around the turn of the century we start seeing Americans move out we have something called the spanish-american war the United States is moving into the Philippines and you have this idea horribly titled but it's called the white man's burden and this is really where today the United States influences fast it's the most influential country on the planet and this is really where that influence begins that America starts to expand and really be the power that we see today so America China century it's a fascinating place we're gonna be digging much deeper into this crazy country and really see especially here how all of this leads up to World War one so this first unit we're gonna be looking at is kind of how America is developing before this cataclysmic war that really tears the the world apart so that's what we're gonna be getting to so enjoy your time and I will see you next video
