Adding a New Patient in OpenEMR

In this video, you will learn how to add a new patient. I'm Robert Down, a project administrator of OpenEMR. Let's get started. Begin by logging in to OpenEMR. I'm using a standard receptionist account. Next, hover over patient and select new search. OpenEMR requires four fields to be filled out by default. They are first name, last name, date of birth, and sex. We can enter additional information about the patient. In this case, we'll add a provider, and we'll acknowledge that they've received HIPAA-compliant paperwork. Additionally, we'll set their language to English, and finally click Create New Patient. OpenEMR automatically checks for duplicate patients, but in this case, let's just click Confirm Create New Patient. We're now taken to the patient summary screen. We can see the information we've entered by clicking through the various tabs. We can edit any of the information by clicking the edit button next to each section. Let's add an address for this user. Click edit next to demographics. Click on the contact tab and enter the address. Click save. We can verify the information has actually been entered by hovering over the contact tab and selecting it. Now let's try to add a patient that already exists in the system. hover over Patient and select New Patient. Enter the same information as before, first name, last name, date of birth, and sex. For this example, we'll skip the rest of the information. This time, when we click Create New Patient, you notice OpenEMR has identified a duplicate record. If this is actually a duplicate, we can click right on the patient row and be taken straight to the patient summary screen for the proper patient.
