Psychologist Solomon Ash conducted a study in the 1950s. This experiment shows the extent to which social pressure from a majority group could affect a person to conform. Ash formed several groups of 10 people and said, this is a study on visual perception.
The perception of lengths of lines. As you can see here, I have a number of cards and on each card there are several lines. Your task is a very simple one. You're to look at the line on the left and determine which of the three lines on the right is equal to it in length.
So, the participants have to announce one by one which line is equal to this line. You can be manipulated at this level that you can refuse even what you see. This is the deep lesson of psychology. But when there is a partner, then you are more likely to say the truth too. Because you know there is another person.
who is also telling the truth. In the third case, when the participant gave answers in writing, then he is more likely to tell the truth also, because there is no pressure of social embarrassment. Even the way you perceive the world, is influenced by what the people around you think. That is the grand lesson from this study.
