Mastering Math with Chunking Technique

Hi there, thank you for checking out my channel. Thank you for clicking on this video. This video is part of the series of videos I post to try to help people out when it comes to aptitude tests like the Civil Service Exam, LAE, UPCAT, and all of those things. Today is part of our Math Mondays series. Every Monday, I tried to post one new video lesson on Math. And today we're going to talk about the technique that I've been using since way back when I was a kid So when I started out using Math we're already using it and actually talked about this in one of my earlier videos in the old channel but I figured It's time for a revamp And I also want to show you guys on how to use it in bigger numbers and that technique is called chunking So guys if you don't want to miss any of the new videos, I'll be posting more more are in lined don't forget to subscribe and hit the bell icon So you will know as soon as the new video is ready for you guys Alright, so today we're going to talk about chunking It's a speed math technique, and I'm also going to give you an exercise Then the link will be at the end of the videos I would love for you guys to Participate and really make the most of all of these free resources I have in line for you So in order for me to explain that better I'm going to switch over to my PC so I can show you how to do it. I'll see you in a bit. Alright, so this is our lesson on chunking if you have our workbook number one This is going to be on the first page of this workbook. And again, it's an update to an older video that I made it the older channel, so I really hope That you will be able use it. Now, if in case you don't have the workbook, that's okay. I prepared a quick quiz that is free for this video you can find it at the end of the video. At the end, you can see a Thumbnail to the quick quiz, you can click that so you can practice also. Okay. Now if in case you're interested to get this Workbook and the other reviewers that I made you can go to the www.facebook.com/teamlyqa for that, okay Now if you have the workbook, you can turn to your page one to follow along to these examples here. Ok Now, the operating concept of chunking is this, if you are handling bigger chunks of numbers It's going to be easy for you. Why? Because, to us, it is always easier for us if we're dealing with Tens hundreds and stuff like that it gets complicated If there are remainders, for example, it's easier to deal with Number like five and five ten and ten But with eight and seven eight and nine there we start to be confuse now All you need to do to kind of speed up your mental math process needs to master this What was that? Here it is. Okay 9 plus 1 is 10 8 plus 2 is 10 + 7 + 3 is 10 6 + 4 is 10 + 5 + 5 is 10 and I think all of you know it already These things here You know that all of these amount to 10 Now, just knowing that isn't enough because say some people know that but They don't know how to use it in a different setting. It means, How will it make easier for you the process of mental math for you So I'm going to teach you what I do and hopefully you will get it and you can use it for yourself Okay now again, and this will be on the first page of the workbook if you have it if you don't you can just look at the screen. Here is the list of combinations of Numbers that you're going to add. Now most people what they do is they just read it from left to right That's our training, because Since we were a kid at school they taught us to add numbers from left to right so for example here 9 + 1 + 5 so you have 9 + 1 which will be 10 plus 5 which will be 15 now. The chunking method of speed math. It's basically putting numbers That form bigger chunks together right away So, for example, instead of looking at this as 9 plus 1 plus 5 in my mind What I do right away is, because I know this is automatic 10 , so I just put 5 with 10 Which is going to give me 15 now, it doesn't it doesn't seem like much Right? Because you will only be saving few seconds but actually The more you do it, the faster you'll get. And you will know of that when it comes to getting an exams like the Civil Service Exam, college entrance exams PhilSat, all of those other exams but the problem is, time limit. So when this can save you some time. Even though if it just a few seconds, that's a big thing already. Because you can use that time for the other questions in exam Okay Now in this the number 2 if you try out that method again Looking at it , this is already 10. So, I will just add eight that will give me 18. Here in number three It's going to be the same concept. And though they are separated, when eight and two are combined is 10 So 10 and 7 only is seventeen because it's very easy to add any number to ten You're just going to copy the one. And then add the other number to the one of its side. Here in this number four. It's a little more complicated because its not a Straight ten, but what you could do would be this Okay, the nine here, only 1 so it going to be 10 - ah, so all I'm going to do again This will be going on in my mind the more that I practice it But what I'm going to do is just to complete the 9 to become 10 I can take 1 out of 6 so that would be 5 and if you look at it, two 5 is 10 plus another 10, so that is 20 so again It will save you time instead of going from 6 plus 9 to 6 plus 9 you will add it mentally and it does take longer when its not an easy number to add before you add the number 5 which will give you 20. Because in our mind, basically, you carry a number. So the less that you do it the faster you get now in number 5 if you notice the 6 + 6 we know that six times two is 12 that can also speed things up This will give you 15 because 12 and 3 is 15 now Why am I using this example? It means, any of the number combinations that you're familiar with if the the faster that you become familiar with that or you have memorized it already because of a constant exposure the easier it will be for you to solve. For example, I, one of the number Combinations that I am really familiar with is eight and seven. The eight and seven and the 7 and 8, they are just the same automatic I know that is 15 I just dont add them because I have memorized it, because of the number of times that I encountered the same number so again These are things that you can keep doing and the faster you do it, the more you do that the faster you get. Now, how do you practice it? Now, this is something I talked about in my first YouTube channel This is what we call the plate number game I used to play this with my twin sister because that's what we do. We don't have a brick game. We don't have toys, we don't have Gameboy when we were younger and we used to travel a lot because our school was in D. Tuazon and then our house at the time was in Fairview. So the travel is far. And what we did during travel to keep ourselves occupied okay. and since we are doing nothing. now go up. I'm gonna go and I'm gonna sweep play this game It's what we call a plate number game. Basically, whenever we see a car so there's a plate number What we do is we add it. Okay, and again using The idea of chunking, this will be really fast for you. Why? Because this 3 & 2 that is 5 This is another 5. So that's 10 already. And then you put 9 that is 19 again that's going to teach you how to manipulate numbers to get the answers right away again what we're talking about here our focus is about speed and The beauty about plate numbers is that, isn't it that vehicle is not always on the same spot Sometimes, its moving, unless traffic. So, if its moving or just passing by, we are forced to speed things up to force our minds to solve the problem really fast and That feeling that we are in a hurry that the number might vanish before you can solve it. That's what what's going to force your mind to be faster in solving Math So the next time that you solve a Math problem It's like reeling your mind, its ready to click on those "What is this, Boss? Is this for quick?". So you become really fast. Okay, and actually that's also one of the reasons why I talk fast in the videos and I know a lot of you complain about it, but you have to understand that, the faster if you're Catching up to the ones talking to try to understand it. It's actually forcing your brain to go faster than it normally does So our brain is being trained to think faster. Okay, so sometimes when people complain about how you speak too fast. I I'm kind of inclined like I wanted to tell that, "No, you're just, you're just thinking slow or you're just understanding or hearing slow." Because, sometimes, when a person is talking too fast we get uncomfortable So we're not trying catch up or we're not forcing our mind to understand. And by forcing to catch things up, By forcing yourself to be uncomfortable and chase after someone who's talking That's actually what's going to train your mind to be faster than it is now So, that's the concept of Plate number game that if you play this game, it will force your brain to solve math problems faster than you normally do Okay, so let's try another one Okay, all of these things here I got off in the internet, so it's not Necessarily, just a picture I got. So I got these from Google so, here. This eight four eight five again You can do a number of things, this here eight and eight. I know eight times two is sixteen So I'll just add 4 The 6 + 4 is 10 so that is going to give me 20 and then the five remaining five it will give me 25 so again, we can manipulate the numbers without solving across. If its not, This will be 8 plus 4 is 12 plus 8 plus 5. So sometimes our brain becomes overload in thinking about that because we go beyond 10. Ok. So the key here is to make combinations for it to be easy to solve. It's all right. Let's try another one All right, this one so 2 0 1 9 this is ten and then you have two so you have 12 okay, if you want 20 and 19 that is 39 then. So again all of these combinations that You can solve mentally that that's something that you could do. Okay. Me, for example, when its traffic what I do, again I'm not You can just use single digit So 2 plus 0 plus 1 plus 9 which will give you 12 and then I try to group them together So that can be 20 and 19. So that is 39 and then if the traffic still doesn't move 201 plus 9, so that is 210 okay and again The faster you get you can switch it up to multiplication, you can use factorial Because that's what we did when we were younger. So I started with addition, multiplication and then becomes exponents so just to train me on how to mentally solve Problems in my mind. Okay. Let's try another one Here, so 1 4 6 again this is going to give you 10 4 & 6 is 10 so 1 that is 11 its very easy and I'm hoping That you're solving it faster And what I do, just like here, there is 56 number here. Its funny because its also 11 So I always find patterns in stuff So, the two 11, 11 times two its so easy, 22. So all of the numbers, the combinations that I could play in the number that's what I do Okay now here Here, seem like many numbers You can do multiple things here this right here 8 and 2 is 10 already So you have one 10 and then 2 7 and 1 because 2 1 is 3 and then that's 7 there, and that's another 10 So again, just looking at it you know already. This is actually 20. So, that's our very goal there to make things faster for you to process another one right here Okay Here we have ten here and then you have 9 because 4 and 5 is 9 so that is 19. Ok, so that's the very Concept of chunking and I hope you picked that up and you can challenge yourself now for those who have younger kids I have had students before that I taught them this before and I told them Encourage your kids to play with you and I've had people who tell me like, "Coach, I don't wanna play with my kid because he is faster than me." And actually that, that thing right there would help your child be more confident at school They become confident in Math because unlike their classmates, they won't be scared of numbers Ok One of the reasons why people get so scared in Math is because When they were kids, they had difficulty on it, so that kind of sets the tone for the rest of your life and people make themselves believe that they are really bad at Math when in fact they are not just, no Right attitude towards it or their reaction towards it because since kids they are traumatized already so, that's What I encourage you to do, you can use this teacher kids play with them, make it a game So that when they are traveling They have something to do and they can get that confidence that they need in order for them to understand Math better. Ok Alright, so we're going to level up this concept Okay, so what that means? and these are multiple digit numbers So it's not only for single-digit numbers and again the more you practice the better you get for example 18 and 25 what you could do right here would be, just make it 20 Ok, meaning I'll just make it whole and I will just get two here. This will become 23 in my mind Why? Because 18 and 25 is hard to solve because may carry carry ka pa, but if you think of it as 20 and 23 our mind can Easily pair that up this is going to be 43 right away without doing this Because when you're doing the mental and solving this at the same time sometimes you forget what you are doing, if we complete it if you Make bigger chunks. It's going to be easy for you to process it. For example, 88 and 36. The 88, I always suggest you can start with a bigger number or what is near to ten so that would become easy and so for example 88 I could make that 90 Okay, I will get the two here. This will become 34 so in a Single glance I can see right here. This is a hundred and twenty Four the process is easier, okay, or you can go further here you can make it 100 get the ten here This will give you 24 so 124 okay. I'm just releasing you from the thought because some of you whey they see a problem They thought of doing is to solve it like this and do carry here. and again It takes time when you practice this and learn this, it will save you a lot of time especially in exams. Okay? Another thing here 695 + 208, only 5 and this becomes seven hundred, right? 709 right. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to get 5 here. This will be 203 the answer is 903 Okay, it's way easier than doing this if its not, you will do like this 6 9 5 + + 208 and do the carry thing there when this is what will come out. So again, the more that we save time, the better, because in an exam That is what being argued about, speed. Now. Let's apply this to an actual question that you may encounter In an aptitude exam. The question is what is the mean of this data set? So on mean This is what we called the average. I made already a video on mean, median, mode So in case you forgot about your Statistics, you can just watch that video. I'll just link it here up so you can watch it The mean basically means you're just going to add them all Okay, and then you'll just divide them, for example, in this case, you have one two, three four five six numbers So you're going to add everything and then you're going to divide it by six Now some people, what they will do is just to rewrite it all nine seven nine four like that downward And then, they'll add it one by one and will get the answer. Now, why don't I Encourage you to do this because when you this in an exam first thing Your time will eat up by rewriting all these number second thing Because I am so careless in writing. So what happens usually is I write the wrong number So, for example, my 96 looks like 98 Sometimes, I forgot to complete the circle so I got confused there So, if you are like me and you get careless This is also something I don't encourage you to do Another thing is if you do the carry thing there sometimes you missed one digit and you tend to get the wrong answer So what do you do? Okay The key here is to complete the number. So for example 97 Isn't it, this lacks only three so this will become 100? Okay, so you have a hundred and Ninety here. Okay here Right here that will give you one hundred and ninety. So that's what I do I just answer cool things, I mark things, right? Let's say, why this becomes 90? Because the three we put it here in seven and becomes 100 and then the remaining 90 That's 190. If you notice here there is 96 and 94, I could make it complete Here this one right here that will also give me a hundred and ninety so again that is easier to Manipulate and then this 98 and 82 Okay, in this case I can complete this to make this 100 and this will become 80. So in this case I have 180 Okay, so instead of adding everything what numbers I have left here to add are 190 190 and 180 To make these two here to 200 I could get 10 from here. So this becomes 200 200 and then, the two ten I will make it to 160. So the outcome will now become easier to add you have 400 560 so you have 560 okay divided by six Again, I easily get to the sum, Instead of writing it everything and solve it downward Because it'll take time. So I in an exam, when all are in a hurry this will be your This will be your your trick. This will be your technique, so you could save more time So you can just divide this. It's going to give you 9, so 9, 9 + 6 is 54 But you have 20 right here. So 612 18 93 and because that's the only 93 right there Sorry, my tablet is having problem. So ninety three point something there. So the answer is letter B Top make sure to share this video with your friends especially when they're going to take an exams So we could help others more.
