Weimar Republic - Lecture Notes

[Music] hi guys this is i'm circling today we are looking at the weimar republic so first of all we're going to start all the way back in 1914 and about the impacts of the first world war so in 1914 the germans were a strong nation they had a strong army and they were there was great optimism however after world war one germany was a mess so germany was basically bankrupt they had a revolution and were very politically unstable now there are also deepened divisions in the german society so all these major issues led to a change to the weimar republic now i'll talk about the start of the weimar republic now in 1918 after the war the allies offered germany peace but the conditions were the germany should become more democratic now the kaiser who ran off basically a dictatorship refused this now this led to many revolutions all over the country until on 9th of november 1918 the kaiser abdicated now abdicated basically meant he fled now the following day abbatt who he became the new leader of germany now he signed an armistice with the allies now this basically announced a new germany so this was freedom of speech freedom of worship and better working conditions now this this sounds very jolly and very nice not everyone was happy and many people argued against this so if we look at the right wing first of all many hoped for a return of a kaiser now they believe the ebbet has stabbed germany in the back and they and that they've they've believed all these politicians actually caused the defeat in world war one on the other hand on the left wing they were communists and they thought that germany needed a communist revolution like russia in 1917. nevertheless in 1919 free elite elections took place and ebbett became the president of the weimar republic but however as you can probably guess there are many threats to the weimar republic and one of the left-wing groups were called the spartacists now they argued against the government because they wanted a communist germany so in 1919 there was a revolution where they they set up soviets in many towns now but everett ordered the army and the freight courts to put down the revolution and there were many casualties however there are more revolutions to come and in february 1919 the communists in bavaria kill a soviet republic after kurt eisner was murdered now the fight cops then moved in to cross the revolt and around 600 communists were killed so that's one of them one of the threats um of the to the republic from the left-wing side however they're also threats from the right now as i just said they wanted the right-wing opponent wanted the kaiser to return as they had liked his way of dictatorship and the strong army that germany possessed when he was in control um and in march 1920 there was a cat putch where 5 000 frey corps marched into berlin and took control now you may have just said as i was talking about then the frey courts were used with the government against the smart assist but here they thought that they could take over the government now they did actually take control however this rebellion only failed when the city went on strike now this meant that nothing could really happen because the government ordered this strike and they weren't able to rule properly meaning the government came back and took control now there was also the treaty of versailles now if you want to know all about the terms of the treaty of assad then watch my treaty of versailles video but basically in may 1919 the treaty of osiris declared now although ebert was reluctant to decide he had no choice so as a result many germans blamed ebert for the treaty of versailles and for ending world war one now the treaty of versailles was a major reason for hitler coming to power in 1933 because obviously it caused much unrest and economic problems which was the next next issue with the weimar republic so the reparations that germany had to pay were 6.6 billion now this basically the french they weren't unable to pay in 1922 and the french became fed up with this and they marched into the world to get the reparations now the germany the government and germany actually ordered a strike in aurora however this simply halted industrial production and caused the collapse of the currency now as there was a shortage of materials the government had to print more banknotes to keep up now this basically is called is hyperinflation and this is where the currency becomes completely worthless so hyperinflation caused many problems as employees were forced to pay um wages twice daily businesses and savings were destroyed and people rushed out to buy things before prices increased so we may have seen pictures with people having burning their money because it literally was completely worthless now this all changed and i won't go into too much detail about gustav stressman but i have a video about it so um watch this afterwards and you can learn more but gustav stressman was a chancellor between august 19 november 1923 to 1929 and he made many changes to germany to improve the country so he changed the currency he agreed the doors plan which was a reparation scheme where america was sending loans of 800 million marks and he worked on many international relations such as the locano treaties the league of nations he got germany to join in 1925 and the kellogg brian pact now i go on about all of these and how he changed germany as long as the the issues which surrounded germany in this time um in my strength in my stressman gust of stressmen video so watch that if you want to know more about it however this collapsed really in 1929 when firstly gustav stressman died of a stroke and there was also the the depression which caused um havoc across the whole country until eventually hitler was appointed chancellor in 1933 so that's the basics of the weimar republic and how they were set up until gustav stressman took control and i hope you enjoyed it and thank you for watching and i'll see you soon bye
