expectat to actively taking part in it and this movement is happening and I want you all to take part of it and I will also share stories from other lettering designers um as well as we'll share with you uh samples of my own library of works so that you can see um actual uh laring products in real life and start picturing what it would look like to do that type of work for yourself now before we dive in I want to make sure that you get the best out of this session you have signed up for this workshop and I want you to commit to to being here to be um and you can do that by turning off your phone and participating in the chat you have a unique opportunity here to connect with creatives from all over the world who are on the same Journey you are also here for yourself you're not here for me or for anybody else you're here for yourself and not paying attention is also a way of undermining your own goals so pause in the chat write in the chat if you're in to make the best out of this uh one hour together uh let me know if you're turning off the notifications in your phone if you're closing your email app if you're going to be present in the chat let me know and we can get started so I love it I love yes we are all in I'm all in Maria Isel says yeah Lisa is all in Sarah is all in excellent I love that I love this this is the best way to get the best out of this workshop and before starting I always like to to address the conversation that you may be having in your mind I call this the Mind radio we all have this we all tell ourselves stories we all tell things we all have conversations going on in our mind and right now you might be thinking that you would never be able to to learn and master handling let anone get paid for it because it takes too much time or you're not a natural born Talent or I'm too old to learn an expertise or even for some of you who I know have been doing this for a while you may think that the market is oversaturated and you're here to see like well is it all really oversaturated uh because I believe that you know it's oversaturated I feel that it's overs saturated and it's virtually impossible to stand out from the crowd and get paid for doing uh work you love and I know that we have this conversation going on in our heads let me know in the chat if you have ever said to yourself any of these things I know that I have said to myself these type of things um and I know that I often you know have this conversations in my mind that that don't necessarily speak the truth and let me know in the chat if you have ever said something like this to yourself for sure Stacy for sure Tom absolutely yeah yeah yeah Susanna as well Sarah am I too old yeah Valeria is also in yeah I know that we can be so tough to ourselves with the things that we tell ourselves and that's why I wanted to to address this first because I know that many of you have taken that first step of signing up for this workshop and at the same time you have all these uh thoughts in your head and for today I want to invite you to flip the script what if it didn't have to be that way I want you to open be open to the possibility for a minute what if instead you could learn and master an expertise like handling become an expert at this and start creating unique work that is so unique that people is willing to pay for it because you will see in this Workshop that lettering is a valuable skill that very few people have although I know that many of you may think like there's a lot of people doing lettering out there but you will see in this Workshop that it's a it's a valuable skill it's an expertise that very few people within the design industry has and that is as an expert is and will continue to be extremely valuable for our economy and life and I will show you why as soon as we get into the lettering Revolution PDF in fact you may have already tried something you may have already tried lettering and you got discouraged because you felt it was too hard or even some of you may have pursued some paid assignments with lettering but you were disc discouraged because you felt the market was always saturated um or it didn't work the way you hoped right the H this happens to a lot of us um this happens to a lot of designers and graphic artists and the thing is that we try a couple of times and because it doesn't happen right away we start doubting our capabilities especially nowadays where we feel that everything needs to happen right away we are in this economy where everything needs to happen right away and if it doesn't happen right away we believe that it will never happen right and this is where we start wondering ing do I have what it takes to get paid for doing work I really enjoy do I have what it takes to to create work that I enjoy doing and people is willing to pay for and if let me know in the chat if if this sounds familiar because um I know where you're coming from with this uh I've also been there wondering if this is possible for me uh but the truth is that we don't know better many of us have not been trained into finding opportunities for ourselves and I am here to show you that you have what it takes to to do this to create work that you really enjoy doing and nevertheless get paid for it um because I do believe and I've seen that over and over again inside our community ins inside our programs in my own life in my own experience building my career as a lein artist that anybody can learn to draw letter forms and build a career with it and that's why in this Workshop I'm going to demystify the process of doing just that of building a successful career in letter and design which my expectation is that it will save you a lot of time and money and frustration um that I had to invest myself throughout my 15 years of career as a learning artist and I want you to save you years of trial and error so that you can start doing that right away so in this first session I'm going to help you discover the world of handling for those that are new to this this would be a way of you know your entry door to hand lettering and for those that have been doing lettering for a while this would be like going through you know going through again what it is that you're doing when you create lettering and furthermore we're going to dive into to how the industry looks like right now what are the possibilities inside the industry and we will first dive into what lettering is we would Define it and why it has become so important and will continue to be important I will also introduce you to theing Revolution by the way full disclosure this lettering Revolution wasn't happening when I started in fact when I started every every time I would say to someone that I'm a lettering designer they would go like you you what so and this has radically changed whenever I tell to someone that I'm a lettering designer they already know what I'm talking about clients approach me already knowing what they will be um getting from me so no matter if you're just studying or you have been doing this for a while after you go through these resource you will understand how you can find your place in this industry which is already established and how you can use this expertise to build your own creative career now perhaps you're wondering you know you're wondering why I'm sharing this and lettering as an expertise or learning lettering as an expertise has changed my career and life in a big way and this is the reason now I'm on a mission to share that with others like you because before becoming a lettering artist I used to be a generalist graphic designer and at some point I felt out of love with my work um so much so that at some point I thought I would leave um creativity alog together that I would I thought I would go get a job uh somewhere um and let me know in the chat if any of you is at this point in their career I know that there are a lot of graphic designers uh join in this session and and I was there at some point I signed up for a graphic design school um I got my degree I started working and I had all these dreams of a very creative career and at some point I realized like well this doesn't feel very creative to me um my work didn't feel special and I didn't feel any connection with what I was doing um and yes I I see many of you saying like well yes um 57 I am please yes okay so many of you so I get it I mean I get it and and I want I was at this point where I was deciding whether I will continue down the road of finding a creative career for myself or just quitting all together and going uh find a job somewhere but then I discovered lettering and with lettering I found the perfect blend of design and self-expression suddenly because I had this very specific expertise I was seen as an expert and I attracted work that I really enjoyed doing and this is something I speak about often which is the fact that I love that about lettering that it is a mix between design it has a structure it has you know certain boundaries uh it's not just about creating anything it's about creating something that is legible that is communicating an idea and at the same time it has play a place for self-expression you can uh you can express yourself through the shape of the letter forms you can create a portfolio that has your own style that expresses your own voice as a creative and this is what I love about lettering that is not just about creating an thing is about creating messages and that can be really powerful and and I found that in lettering that I you know I never left lettering anymore I I made from uh off lettering my career and I also saw that my own uh clients will see me as an expert and that started to attract better assignments my way projects that were more attractive but of course it wasn't a straight line uh so launching my career as a lan artist came with a lot of challenges and before I dive into the lettering Revolution I want to tell you a little bit of that story because you may be wondering hey what do you know about this how how can you talk about that Ling Revolution and I want to you to know what where where this is coming from so this is my workplace when I started as a lettering artist this is also this was also my bedroom literally my bed was right behind my desk and when I started I knew that I had to fight a big battle because lettering wasn't even a thing I was just mentioning that lettering at that time whenever I said to someone that I was a lettering artist they would wonder like what is it that you do and and they you know I had to explain this to clients so in order to make a living with my skills I had to find several ways to monetize them because clients were still not aware of the value of my work they they didn't know what to do with me but I wasn't sure if I could do it because I had all the questions and doubts that anybody studing ER as a freelancer has and I know that many of you are Freelancers there and you also may have had the same uh the same questions so I wasn't sure if I could uh do this because I had hadn't mastered my skills yet and to be honest I doubted if I could do it because I didn't know anything about business and I hadn't learned any business skills in our school uh so on top of that I thought who will pay me for doing work I would be doing anyways right I would be doing this job anyways I would be creating this piece of work anyways uh who would pay me for doing something I love and write in the chat if you have ever said any of these things because I feel that or at least I I grew up with the understanding that work needs to be something that you suffer from or something that is not enjoyable and and I always wonder if if someone will pay me to do something I really enjoy and I feel that we need to we need to cut with that narrative we need to stop believing that the work that we do every day the job that we create for ourselves cannot be something that we enjoy and yes I know that many of you are saying on the chat right now that yes you have said this to yourself and this this is common these are the the doubts that come up with starting something that is Meaningful to you and I know exactly how it feels I know I know it's not nice I know it's not enjoyable um and I I also question myself if I could do this but I had options back then and you have them too right now I could let this Define who I am and what I do or I could invest all that energy into making it happen because you know doubting and second guessing yourself also um drains a lot of energy from you but you have the choice to to take all this energy and invest it into making something happen for yourself and this is what I did after all we spend most of our life working so better be it in something that really lights you up and so at that time I decided to do that and I knew that producing the work and starting the project that I wanted to see with my work was key to building that career because clients were not ready yet so I started building those things um so I did just that and I started slowly building a portfolio transitioning from being a graphic designer to becoming a letter in artist incorporating more uh lettering work in uh in my portfolio um and once I began do doing that work and and building my portfolio I started seeing a shift people starting noticing my work and it has happened now I have built a career doing something I really love ones that gives me the flexibility and the autonomy to work on projects that really light me up I have a portfolio that I'm really proud of and and that I'm I'm eager to show to the world um I was able to create lettering pieces for clients all over the world that even got me Awards and I even started my own line of products um I publish books I've been on dozens of design conferences um and I've been also teaching and and helping other designers and graphic artists like you um doing the same and build a career doing something they really love and this expertise has led me build a career for myself that really excites me and also gives me that flexibility I was seeking for uh one that doesn't force me to to take on any project uh one that allows me to work to decide which uh client work I take on and which I decline and uh and one that is also built on different income streams so that so that I don't depend entirely on client work to to make a living uh with my creativity and also one that is filled with purpose and gets me out of bed every day excited to hit the studio which is exactly what I was going for I sent yesterday a a message to our WhatsApp group I know that many of you are there um and I I I mentioned I sent you a voice message saying that I remember that in the past Sundays used to be um kind of sad for me because I knew that I had to wake up to go to a job that I didn't love next morning and that no longer happens and nowadays I am excited to hit the studio every day and today I was especially looking forward to host this session for you and if you are ready to transform your daily work by by learning a skill like lettering design I believe that you can do it and you can with it create things that you're really proud of and you can get paid for doing that um and you're going to love what is coming up so I'm going to share with you the the lettering Revolution PDF so Roma is from the team she's going to share the link on the chat I'm going to do the same so let me just see if I can drop the chat um here's the link I'm GNA say um so you can go ahead and download the PDF the Le Revolution I'm just going to wait for you so go ahead and do it okay Roma thank you Roma is uh is sharing the link right right there and it's pinned right now in the chat so that you can go ahead and download it I'm waiting for you and you can download the resource which is going to help you quickly understand what lettering is so we're going to dive first into what lettering is and it's going to give you an overview of the possible applications of lettering things that you may have not considered in the past so that you can start thinking about what are some of the things that you could be doing with an expertise like lettering and trust me is a lot more than you ever thought it would be um lettering is literally everywhere um and you're going to discover in a minute why so download the link download the PDF from the link so that we can get started so for some of you that may just be getting started with lettering this may sound like hey Martina I'm just getting started thinking about monetizing my work and building a career with it seems really far away so and for those of you that are just stying I want to tell you that I get it that you just want to do the first steps first and that's totally fine that's why we call this theine road map because there's an order to things and first things things come first but I want to tell you that there's nothing that keeps you more accountable that the expectation of creating something real so even if you're just staring the expectation of creating something real that people can buy that people can have is the best way to stay accountable um and you can call that an online shop with your prince you can think of a series of post postcards that you can create with your work and license to Brands uh you can also think of a series of patterns and prints for home decor uh so I want to open your mind to possibilities um so that you can start picturing yourself creating these things I always say that in order to go from amateur to professional and elevate your work you need to start behaving like a pro even before becoming a pro and I identifying possible things you could be doing to make money with your lettering can do just that can start can push you to start thinking of yourself as someone who can actually do this for real so download the PDF and let's get started so go click on the link you can download it we're going to walk through the PDF together right so I'm gonna just move on to the PDF and as we go through each part of the lettering Revolution I want you to identify areas of opportunity for for for you for your current situation yes so I want you to start thinking well I can imagine myself doing this I can imagine myself um creating uh an online shop or creating merchandise or creating objects or invitations right so let me just get out of this presentation and I'm going to share the PDF with you going to go back here so this is how the PDF looks like and we're going to start here with what is lettering and for those that are just stared this is going to be a way of defining what lettering is which may be right now for you something fun or something that you enjoy doing but you don't exactly know what what is it and for those that have been doing this for a while this would be like refreshing some of the um the foundations or the principles so lettering is the art of uh drawing or designing lettering letter forms Often by hand that convey a message or communicate and an idea and often times lettering is confused with um or or mistaken with calligraphy so lettering is the art of drawing letter forms as and it's a design exercise whereas calligraphy is the art of writing letter forms and the um in a way depends on your ability to control your hand control the tool right whereas lettering is the art of drawing letter forms and you have the power to decide the exact shape of your letters and that's what I love about lettering that it gives you that power over the shape which oftentimes calligraphy doesn't give you it depends a lot on you know whether you can control the the the your hand from shaking or not or whether you you master that tool or not and lettering goes beyond typography to add personality style and emotion to written words as a lettering designer you have to power to shape language and create impactful messages that resonate with audiences in a natural as a leing designer you are giving language a shape you're shaping messages and I always love to illustrate the power of lettering by using um by using I'm going to stop sharing here by using book covers because by designing a book cover you are in a way I'm going to just flip the Colors by designing book covers you're essentially um summing up a story that is told in 300 Pages 200 Pages you're summing up a story in just one design right now the story the message that I'm conveying here in this cover in the black one is very different to the message I'm conveying here right and the audiences I'm addressing are also very different so this is more for teens and and a younger audience where while this is is more for an not old audience I can imagine that this is a serious uh story uh a story that is based on historical facts whereas this is more like a like a fantasy story right and it's true there's other things that play a role here the color the decorative elements of both covers they also play a role but in lettering letter forms are the stars they are the heart of the message right and this is the power of letter forms that they can communicate much more than the lit literal meaning of the words they can tell you a story before you even read that story so as letter designers you are shaping language and I want you to I want to invite you to look around you for a second and because this is what the Lan Revolution is about lettering has evolved significantly right and and it has become something that is widely recognized um in various aspect of our Liv so I wanted to invite you to look around and find something that has lettering on it and I'm going to give you a second and write it on the chat find one thing I already saw one here in this room another one okay I have my work here as well so that's that's one of the reasons but be beyond my work I see other things so try to find something and write it on the chat and I'm sure that you will find more than one thing I'm sure that you will find three four things the you know the packaging of the yogurt you're eating or the pouch where you have your tools or the print that you have on your wall found too Miguel saying um ah it's going too fast Le Leslie is going okay uh AB artistic designs calendar Megan greeting card uh M Betty so glue bottle label yes lettering is everywhere and and that is because language is everywhere we use language to communicate with one another to send messages on WhatsApp to um to send a message to someone to send a postcard to someone uh we use language to communicate with one another and as long as language is relevant lettering will be relevant because lettering is the art of shaping those messages is the art of shaping those letter forms so lettering is not just decoration it is also part of the content that is being conveyed um so I see you all um finding things L is saying books Melinda sister Ravi newspaper um Roberto cassette tape the gift packs all of that because language is Omni omnipresent is everywhere in our lives and as learing designers we have that role the role of giving language shape and is on book covers is on magazine covers is on epimera is on Prince is on billboards uh on the street is everywhere right and this is why lettering has become an established industry because not only lettering helps uh shaping messages but also lettering is helping companies sell products is helping companies and Brands connect with their audiences so let me go go back and share my screen with you um I'm going to go back to my PDF that you can download and and use as well you will find the link in at the top of the chat so so I was as I was just saying um lettering brings language to life uh and it helps convey messages and you will see in page number three of the PDF that there's a few not all but a few applications possible applications of lettering you will see that there's a list that says book covers posters objects so I just share with you book covers right so this is a possible application of lettering um objects like I have other applications here like pin P you can see here on the screen I hope that you can see this so uh pins and um jewelry um you can also create invitations or postcards this is too white okay so um you can create logotypes and apparl and editorial illustrations uh let me show you more ephemera so here I'm sharing pieces of my own work um just to give you I want to show you these pieces of work because they show you real work right it's not just something that you see on a PDF which I just share with you but I want to show you real work so totebags I want to share this one with you this one is one of the favorite ones that I have created throughout the years um it says love um let me show you more logotypes so I was just mentioning logotypes this is a logotype that I created for Mercedes-Benz for their um magazine uh so as a lettering designer you can also um create logotypes and I know that many of our of the members of our community are graphic designers that have a specialized in this I'm thinking of ran for instance ran is part of our community and ran is a logotype designer with 15 years of experience and now ran is using his expertise um in letter and design to offer more custom solutions to uh to his clients and therefore he's able also to differentiate himself from other logotype designers out there so a few ideas of what what are some possible applications of lettering but really there's everything in the industry everything out there has lettering on it postcards merchandise signage murals social media Graphics greeting cards product branding um tattoos um restaurant menus everything has lettering on it and in the in the PDF I have included a few stories and while I go through this PDF I want want you to to check the boxes because this is an interactive PDF check the boxes of those that you would like to actually be created creative so imagine yourself doing um ephemera do you imagine yourself uh creating home decor or uh incorporating this as a as a as a a service as a as a graphic designer um and offer custom logo type types is how what do you imagine yourself doing with your lettering expertise and I included the story of Francesca and Vanessa I know Francesca and Vanessa personally they have been in uh in my program the line seminar and one of them actually started came to my studio right here uh to one of the first uh iners sessions that I offer in my studio um Vanessa so Vanessa is a graphic designer at that time she was living in the UK now she's living in in Barcelona and Vanessa was used to be a marketing expert and and she was also creating working in branding with her graphic design uh expertise and she came to that Workshop she started learning lettering uh so that Workshop was the first uh her first dive into uh into lettering and now um Vanessa has become a uh a muralist which also offers um Custom Design Services and lettering services to her branding uh clients right so she has incorporated she has incorporated her expertise as a laring artist into the work she was already doing as a branding expert and she not only creates custom solutions for her uh for her clients but also she creates she extends the work she does for the brands into their spaces into their offices and she creates murals for them Franchesca for instance she went in another Direction um Franchesca is a graphic designer an in-house graphic designer and she started um an online shop actually Franchesca started her online shop on Etsy she created a few products um and she started selling those products on Etsy and um understanding also what resonated with her audience and now Francesca is building her own online shop so she had transition from offering those products in an already existing platform like Etsy to actually creating her own brand and creating her own um home the own and own home for her products right so and it all started um from while keeping her day job so Francesca kept working as a graphic designer as an in-house graphic designer and then she transitioned into slowly building uh this online shop with her lettering products so she has oneof a kind lettering products like patches and and uh these beautiful um keychains that you see on screen um so this these are very different ways of using lettering creating products uh and setting up your online shop um is a very different way way of um the way that Vanessa chose to go uh which is incorporating this uh as an extra service in her branding um in The Branding services that she was giving to her clients um and also using her expertise in lettering to offer more personalized Solutions right so think about I want you to click on this PDF that you have downloaded which are the things that you imag imagine yourself doing right now we're going to move on to the next page which is the industries and the industries is really it's across all Industries because again we go back to the idea of language and language is used across all Industries in advertising graphic design publishing marketing branding and identity packaging Design interior design um automotive design I just show you this example um of Mercedes-Benz every industry needs to communicate with the audience every industry needs to put messages across and every industry therefore needs a lettering artist who is specialized in shaping those messages and can help them Brands and companies sell their products so I'm thinking just to give you also a few ideas of the different Industries um I'm thinking of David David is a a motion designer and David Incorporated um bling as a new expertise in his business so David when when I met David um he told me that he was tired of being the after effects guy because as a motion designer he was always hired to do after effects so he wanted to incorporate a more creative approach to his practice and he learned lettering he started incorporating lettering work into his portfolio and he is now creating uh titles for movies um so titles for movies are the you know the title designed for uh for the titles that show up in the beginning or at the end of the movie which is such a dream project for a uh emotion designer so thanks to the fact that he learned this expertise he started adding some some samples of work into his portfolio he was able to start infusing a bit more creativity into his work so instead of be continuing being the after effects guy um he was the you know the expert the typography expert the lettering expert who was able to create this unique um these unique titles for movies um another example is Rick for instance um who has been in our community for over two years Rick I think two years um and Rick has invested himself so much into the craft that he has lately started to teach the craft right so he has incorporated this new skill set um that he has mastered to a point where he is confident enough to teach that to others right so you can see the different directions in which you can go Rick has gone in the uh into the education industry with this new expertise by by mastering an expertise like H Ling uh he has built a portfolio that is uh very attractive that showcases his expertise and is also now um daring to teach others and diving into a new industry for for himself as a graphic designer which is education um industries start identifying what are you know what are some possible opportunities that are there for you um if you work for the entertainment industry is there a way in which you can Infuse more lettering work in your work uh if you work as a logotype designer or a branding designer is there a way which you can um use the expertise of letter design to create more custom Solutions and charge more um what are some of the things that you already know that you could enhance through the use of custom solutions that you can offer with lettering right and I want you to identify some of these industries um also coming from a place of like hey I would love to uh work in publishing I would love to create book covers uh this is what I would love to create um as a lettering artist and you can expertise like lettering because it would take work yes it would take it would require for you to invest some time and if you have been doing lettering for a while and you want to uh build a career with it start getting paid for it then it will require for you to invest some of your uh of your time so I always I always invite everybody to think about what is you know what is what are the possibilities for you here what is the the potential impact that learning something like this becoming expert at something could have in your life and work um and for some of you could be starting a creative side hustle and creating extra income for some of you it's like attracting more creative work so having more creative expression in your in your life and in your daily work uh for others would be being professionally un H fulfilled for others would be um having addition income or gaining recognition and appreciation for your work um or building confidence in your artistic abilities or creating beautiful work so there's a few saying creating beautiful work I love that um Lilian oh it went too fast Anna seeus in motion Lisa Ronda pivoting careers flux Collective fresh Park so for each one of you this this will have a different meaning and a different uh impact right but I think it's always important to um to keep that um front and center because everything that is worthwh doing is has a bigger pursue has a bigger goal behind it right and everything where you are if you're going to invest time into this if you're going to invest whatever of your time in this workshop and you're going to show up in all the four S uh sessions of this Workshop then it's going to require something from you it's going to require you to choose this over other things and getting clear on what that is going to how that is going to impact your life it is very important so let me just go ahead I love all the things that you're saying um in the chat so let me just go ahead you can keep this PDF and you can continue to work on it um and I hope you will let me just share the screen again with you so what I think is great from the lettering Revolution is that it shares why lettering is a sort after expertise that is that is booming that is necessary in each industry because lettering is dealing with language and therefore we as lettering design ERS as sling artists we are shaping those messages we are helping companies and Brands connect with the a with their audiences sell their products it is also important because it shows you the Myriad of ways that you can find in which you can find your place in this industry and it also shows you that it goes across all Industries so it doesn't only show you the the possible things that you could create with your lettering work but it also shows you that it goes across all Industries and it also shares what lettering is and and why it has this Timeless relevance right it has this because as long as as language is relevant as long as language is our main uh tool for communication lettering the art of shaping those uh words that language is going to be relevant and that leads to the first secret of lettering which I'm going to get from right under that golden erson I love my golden Emerson so the first secret of lettering is that lettering is a Timeless art as long as language remains relevant lettering design will continue to be essential and I'm going to share with you let me just stop sharing the screen so that you can write down here it is so ah too lightful all right you can see there lettering is a Timeless art wa wait too much light can you read it okay I'm going to read it for you oh there you can read it write it down because this is the secret that you're going to use to enter the draw for a oneyear Adobe Creative Cloud subcription write it down again I'm going to say it out loud lettering is a timeless art as long as language remains relevant letter design will continue to be essential amen so now that we know what lettering is why it is important now that you're clear about the lettering Revolution and you know that there's plenty of space for you in this industry then the big question is what do you need to take your next step into this world and find your place right and because this is the most important thing for aspiring lettering artists and lettering designers if you can find the way to get started and going then you won't be able to transform your work and build a career with that at the end of the day we want to trans transform our daily work to do something that really lights us up right that's why we are all here and without this without knowing what is the next step that you need to take then it means that you will stay exactly where you are right now uh which is either stuck at the starting phase not knowing where to go um and saying that you cannot learn this that you don't have what it takes and that there's no room for you in this market um but what I want to do with this series of workshops is to show you how you could be doing work you would you are passionate about on a daily basis and get paid for it wouldn't that be great I know it would I know it is now how do you finally get there and what do you need to walk off all the stages of building a career doing work that you're passionate about that's what I'm going to show you on the next Workshop uh that is happening on Wednesday and before you leave I'm going to answer the questions right after um showing you what's coming up in the next session so in the next session we are going to dive into the stages of becoming a lettering designer um so if you are looking to learn hand leing and create work you're really proud of and and you want to also generate income with it and even build a career as a letter designer or a lettering artist then this will give you a Step by by step that you can follow um and also it will show you where you are right now and where do you need to go uh I will share with you um the six the the six stages of becoming a lettering designer so I believe that there are six stages and you will be able to see to quickly identify where you are right now and also what do you need to achieve you know what do you need what is the knowledge Gap I call it the knowledge Gap that you need to cover uh that you need to learn in order to move faster onto the next stage um and I'm also going to share with you tons of stories uh from other lettering artists other letter designers and I'm going to also share another resource that you can download and use as a reference tool and you can use also to uh to participate in the workshop so you don't need to bring anything um and you with this resource you will see how easy it is to move on to the next stage when you know where you are standing when you know where you are in your lettering journey and you know what the next stage is first you have something look to look forward uh to and second you know what is it that you have to focus on next to move on to the next stage which is very different from what what other person needs to be focusing on and we often tend to compare ourselves with other people that are on a different stage and when you are clear about what is you know what what where are you right now and what it would take you to move on to the next stage then you just need to focus on that you don't need to focus on what someone else is focusing because they are on another stage and that's totally fine so this is what we are going to be talking about tomorrow sorry on Wednesday in uh in this session number two of this Workshop which is going to be about the stages of becoming a letter in designer it's GNA it's going to happen on April 2nd at 10:00 a.m. eastern time so the same time that the workshop today is going to happen um this second session and as I said all of the sessions build up on one another so I recommend you to come to that session uh because I'm also going to be sharing a another secret of lettering to participate in the draw for one for oneye Creative Cloud subscription so now I'm going to dive into your questions um I know Roma has been picking up on some of the questions that you have asked along the way um so let me just dive on some of them so so I have a few questions here that are interesting today we were talking about let me drink a little bit of water here so the today we were talking about you know diving deep into the industry diving deep into how it looks like to uh make a living with lettering what are the possible applications of your work uh what are the possible Industries in which you can uh you can work um and I know that many of you come from graphic design or are creatives in some way uh you do illustration or you do uh graphic art uh or you do animation like David that I showed throughout the the sessions so let me just uh stop sharing my screen so that I can dive into your questions um so okay so Tom Aon is asking as a logo and brand designer how can I best utilize the skills we will learn here and meld the two together in your opinion so Tom during the presentation actually in the PDF you will find the story of Eva and the story of of Eva let me see I have it here so you will find the story of Eva um and Rebecca yes so Eva Jerome is a a logotype designer she's from France and I work with Eva often every uh she is part of our community and Eva is has always been a graphic designer who specialized in logotype we design and through lettering through acquiring the expertise of lettering she is able to offer more custom solutions to her clients and that means often times for logotype designers that they are able to differentiate from other logotype designers who are basically creating all of their logotypes through the use of fonts and the fact that you have this expertise this additional expertise of lettering where you can create a custom solution you can create a logotype that is extremely unique for your clients and therefore you can upgrade your uh your rates because of this additional expertise because your clients will not be able to get the level of um uniqueness or customization uh with other designers that use fonts that any other brands can use and this is such an important um topic for Brands and and and for companies Brands invest thousands and tens of thousands and hundreds of thousands uh into creating their own uh house fonts and and and custom logotypes just because they want to stand out through uh through the uniqueness of their graphic assets right and I've seen that happening for many logotype designers that they added this level of expertise where they can offer more custom solutions to their clients and the other example from Rebecca Rebecca is a packaging designer for specifically for um for the food industry and uh she's from the UK and she also started incorporating this expertise in more custom solutions for their clients and I love your question Tom because I know that many of you that are here are Freelancers or graphic designers or have been um doing something else within the the design industry or the creative Industries and they wondering okay how can I how can I incorporate more interesting work in my daily work um without completely pivoting careers um and that is a great way learning expertise like lettering can give you that extra layer of uh of expert can allow you to add that um that extra service in your uh in your freelance business if you're a freelancer or can help you uh have that extra expertise to Lear better jobs or to get better in-house uh roles um so that's what I've been seeing with logotype designers Tom so I hope that answer that answers your question um so Monica Monica is asking um so Monica is asking what would you advise me if I don't have studies in graphic design or illustration so I know that many of you don't have are not graphic designers and I know that for many graphic designers they already know about uh letter design because it's it's part of the things that you go through as you train yourself as a graphic designer but for someone coming new into the industry from something totally different um it can be intimidating because you feel like well perhaps I need to have some some uh foundations uh some fundamentals and I can tell you that throughout my um 10 years of helping others learn hand lettering because this is something I've always done throughout my career teach others do the same I published my book The the golden secrets of lettering in 2016 and when I published that book I had been teaching lettering for five years already so this this book shared uh my process at creating lettering um and therefore I've seen people from so many different places coming to uh to my workshops I've seen Architects and photographers I've seen uh ux designers and and web designers I've seen people from a lot of different uh backgrounds coming coming to my workshops and and really learning the craft uh because you know some you know more about lettering than you think you do and this is due to the fact that as I mentioned before language is omnipresent we work with letters all of the time no matter matter where you're coming from what your background is if I tell you to draw a capital N right now you can sit down and draw a capital N because you already you have a library of letter forms in your mind that has been built throughout all of these years of Sending WhatsApp messages writing emails uh talking to people reading science on the streets um and therefore this has built a a basic understanding of letter forms that we all have and that's what I love about this graph that everybody knows already more than they think they do uh so Monica if you come from a totally different um Walk of Life and you have no background in graphic design and uh and in illustration that is no um that doesn't suppose a problem for you to learn this Craft um of course learning the craft of lettering requires understanding the fundamentals I always say that uh every craft every discipline has their rules and lettering has their rules as well and in order to play the game you need to learn the rules so Monica if you are invested into uh learning lettering this is something you can totally do I've seen it happening for for many others that are coming from uh other backgrounds that are not designed that are not uh illustration and they uh were able to create beautiful work I hope that answers your question mon Monica [Music] um so I'm trying to uh uh so I love this question so Christine Christine is asking how to persuade potential clients that lettering Can Be an Effective tool for their brand not just art or some aesthetic decoration I think what I have shared in in this Workshop especially in the beginning of the uh of the PDF the lettering Revolution I think that may be a way of helping you explain your clients the you know how lettering uh Can Be an Effective tool for their brand so lettering is the art of shaping messages and as I show you in the very beginning when you shape a message I'm showing you a book cover here when you shape a message you telling much more than the literal meaning of the world of the words so here you read rival Queens but what you're getting out of this cover is much more than just the literal meaning of those two words right you're getting an idea you're getting an atmosphere you're being brought back to another time in history you are being said what this book is about uh you are being uh called to get this book to grab this book you're attracting the attention of someone using lettering or not using lettering creating a book cover that is um that is attractive can make the the book win or lose can make this book become a bestseller or be completely forgotten right and that's the power of creating uh a custom book cover for instance and that that can be applied to any other industry the same happens with the logotype um you can create a logotype by just using alvea or any other form or times you Roman and just write it down write down the word and that's it uh but that is the difference between a logotype that is memorable uh and a logotype that is forgotten right so I think Christine that could be a way of telling your clients um or helping your clients understand what is the power of lettering right and I always say that as an expert and I love that question uh because of that Christine because I always think that as an expert you will always be teaching your clients to a certain level you will always be teaching your clients on how important your work is and why it makes sense to invest in uh in the details in working on that shapes in getting a good results you will always be educating your clients and your audience in some way and the same way that I did did in the very beginning and I want to show you this because when I started with u lettering I mentioned that people didn't know what I was doing people didn't I would say like I'm a lan artist and they would say like what is it what do you do so I created this print that says telling stories with letters and I hang it on my studio wall and every time I had a meeting with a client or a colleague that I was coming to visit and and they would ask me I will refer them back to this print and this is where the conversation will go down into well lettering is telling you stories with letter forms it's giving language shape and it has value because it is helping Brands bring messages across it is helping books to be sold it is helping products to be sold right and that is the power of lettering so in some way or another you will always be as an expert you will always be educating your clients and I love Christine that you are asking that question because that means that you already you're already positioning yourself as an expert you're already understanding that this is this expertise that you have is valuable and I understand that you you do have a certain expertise in lettering that you have been doing lettering for a while and and therefore you are ready to take that uh that position and explain this to your clients um and I love that you are already training yourself to be able to explain clients the value of lettering so let me just pick up on some more questions so there's some questions that speak about uh so inspiration about the process okay so H Patrice is helping let's dive into some technical questions Patrice is diving into the technical question of the tools um Patrice is just learning procreate can this be follow inate or by hand or do we need an adobe product so this is a great question there's so many tools available for designers and and and lettering designers and lettering artists and many many lettering artists use procreate as a tool and that's totally fine uh I use procreate as well specifically more to sketch uh um um lettering or to create designs um I prefer as a tool I use Adobe Illustrator and I also teach Adobe Illustrator um I always uh encourage everybody to use the tool that uh allows them to be more creative and allows them also to create their best work and nevertheless I always teach lettering designers Adobe Illustrator and there's a reason for that and is the fact that Adobe Illustrator is the industry standard so as a professional lettering designer and and lettering artist at some point earlier or later you will be faced with the need to deliver a a vector file or create a a piece of work that is scalable um like for instance a logotype when you create a logotype you need to create a vector drawing because you need to scale you need to be able to scale that uh that logotype to apply on a business card and also to apply it on a huge billboard on the street right so we teach or I teach Adobe Illustrator because it is the industry standard because it will prepare uh it will prepare you to uh tackle any professional assignment and it's also an additional tool that once you learn it it gives you a level of control that no other tool gives you and I know that many of you here are like myself Define yourself as perfectionist let me know in the chat if you define yourself as perfectionist if you love like spending time into like drawing that n and adding that swash to your uh lowercase y or adding those decorative elements let me know if this is you because this is me and there's nothing in the world that I will allow you to SAR is is saying unfortunately a perfectionist Sterling M coring absolutely um so Eduardo as well oh yes so many of you and that's toally fine I have nothing against perfectionist as long as it doesn't stop you from from creating uh and producing work um but using a vector program and with this I say like you can use Adobe you can use Affinity designer you can use any other Vector program but the vector um drawing is an industry standard H and it will always as I said it will always give you a level of perfectionism that no other tool gives you it will always give you a level of uh customization that no other tool will give you and this is why I always I always uh equip my students with the higher level of tools and then underneath this there is you know a lot of options but the higher level of tool the the industry standard is what I always teach uh and is what I always recommend professionals to learn and then you can choose from the the the the world of tools out there and choose the one that works the best for you and as I said before you can use any Vector drawing program essentially they all work very similarly um I personally use Adobe Illustrator but you can also use Affinity designer and other uh uh Vector programs out there so Patrice I hope that answers to your question um you can always use um procreate and you can as many other learning artists out there use brates to create your work however I will always recommend you to learn a vector program at some point earlier or later you will need to dive into that and you want to be ready for that um so Iana is also asking a question about this I love this uh nerdy questions so let me just dive into that um so Ivana is asking can you tell us a little bit more about the process from creating to working in Adobe Illustrator I no no sorry uh about the process from sketching to working in Adobe Illustrator so Ivana is a is is wondering how do you transition from a hand sketch to a vector drawing um and just to go back in our steps a little bit a a lettering be normally starts by hand um because it is the fastest more efficient way to create a design that's that's that and therefore most of your uh projects most of your uh drawings will start by hand and yes you can use a tool a digital tool like the iPad but you will always usually start sketching by hand on an iPad or on paper and that's what I love about lettering you you just need pencil and paper to get started and then once you have that sketch um you will want to solve most of your problems in that sketch right and this is this is one of my um I would say core principles that you will always want to solve most of your problems in your sketch so that when you move on to the digital drawing which usually moves a lot slower you have most of the problem solved um so in the sketch you will move very fast and even if you think right now that I know many of you think that you cannot draw even if you think that you cannot draw you will see that after you triy it a couple of times after you put yourself um the goal of practicing often and doing often you will gain back the skill of drawing my six-year-old kid can grab a pencil and can draw and so can you so the thing is that we don't do that that often so uh but it's something that everybody can do and you will always want to solve most of your issues most of the problems of your drawing in the sketch and once that is solved you can move on to um digitizing your work and once you move on to a vector drawing program like for instance Adobe Illustrator or uh Affinity designer or there's there was other I studied with another one but I don't remember the name now now um then you can then you can move on to um retracing all that design essentially what you will do with Vector drawing is redrawing the inter entire design and and for that you use a specific technique that is called Extreme points technique um which is a technique that is so powerful is the principle of that technique is essentially to draw letter forms with the minimum amount of points possible so that you can create those perfect shapes that I mentioned before you can get as perfectionist as you want and you can only achieve that through using the minimum amount of points now I am really clear in the process of creating lettering and uh Ivana just asked me that question and for me is the ABC of creating lettering now I do believe that in order to create uh great lettering and and and build confidence in your work you need to have this repeatable process you need to have a a process that you need you can you can use every time you sit down to work because what happens to us often and let me know in the chat if if this is something that you experience is that you don't have that repeatable process and therefore you sit down to work and you start wondering like well where do I start do I start with procreate or do I start by hand um do I use this uh style or do I use this other style um and what text should I draw and then there after 30 minutes you just lost 30 minutes of your practice or the time you had allocated for practice and you have nothing done and this is because um you don't have that rep repeatable process and I do believe that having a repeatable process can help you first create more work be more efficient and build confidence because you just have a system that you repeat over and over again and it works uh like wonders um yes so and sprinkles is saying yep I am that one um so okay someone is saying Coral draw that is the one that I that I learned with uh so having a repeatable process is very important and uh and this is why you want to have that reable process for your for creating lettering so I hope Iana that it gives you Clarity on how do you go from the sketch to the digital artwork um so let me just dive into some of the last questions so that we can so that we can dive into that uh so uh arbit is asking how do you start finding clients for lettering we just typed into the possible Industries the possible things that you could be doing uh the possible um Industries in which you could be creating or for for which you could be creating lettering for and you're starting you are wondering how do you start finding clients for that so arpit in in a nutshell and we can dive into uh client Outreach techniques or uh Frameworks but I want you to start here I want you to start building your portfolio this is the first place where you want to start you want to start building that portfolio to have work that you can show this is the first step for everybody who is trying to attract work and for some of you that will mean building a portfolio just from scratch because you have no other work and then you need to build that lettering portfolio for some of you who are already doing some sort of creative work who are graphic designers who are packaging designer branding experts logotype designers or illustr Traders it's about incorporating more of your uh lettering work into that portfolio and also trying to solve problems that before or projects that before you used to solve with a certain uh skill set trying to solve that or starting to solve that with your lettering skill set so I'm thinking of Mary catling which is one of my students she is a fan artist and illustrator and she creates this beautiful intricate um illustrations that she sells to her clients and she has her own online shop and most recently because she acquired this expertise of lettering she started incorporating that in her illustration work so she's now creating uh prints and and designs that incorporate the uh her lettering work and therefore is putting that out there in uh in her portfolio in her shop right so you can already start incorporating that in your work um and you will see how that will attract more of that work but you have to be the one taking that step um people will not come to you just spontaneously asking you if you hey hey by the way do you do some lettering you need to start showcasing that first in in order to attract that type of work furthermore you need to start um proposing that to clients to people you already work for as a possible solution so as I mentioned before if you're a graphic designer who is having branding uh who is a branding expert or doing logotype design um you can start proposing that type of solution for your clients first um and you will always be again as an expert educating your clients showing them why this is important to them [Music] um let me just go back to some of the questions that I saw here so Mina is asking and I know many of you are are wondering about this so let's tackle this uh this question right now so Mina is asking about my thoughts on AI taking over and how that will influence lean artists and if they they will lose clients who would rather just use AI to make their product I love this question because I know that for many creatives now is this is a Hot Topic am I going to lose my work is AI taking over creative work and here's the thing throughout the years of career that I have as a lean artist I've seen so many technology technological shifts and every time that has happened the same reaction has been among the industry are we losing our jobs are we going to stop doing creative work are machines going to take over um and every time I've seen this techn technological shifts have an impact on how fast we can produce our work how better are our results and how much more of that work we are attracting and creating so throughout my 15 years of experience as a Lin artist I've seen a lot of shifts already from the technology we use to create work to create lettering uh there has been so many shifts plugins new apps coming up that have accelerated the time in which we create work um creating a letter in piece used to take me days and not only because of my level of expertise but also because of the tools that I had available for me nowadays creating a letter in piece can take a few hours if you are uh masterful if you are skillful um and this is thanks to the several techn technological shifts that we have seen throughout the years um that at the time we're seen as oh my God they're stealing our jobs uh graphic designers are dying creatives illustrators are dying and I want you to see AI in the same way um the other day I was I had an interview or I was interview in in a uh podcast called the the angry designer um and I I share that podcast with some of you on the WhatsApp Channel and I was asked the same thing and I feel that nowadays artists or to to succeed in this world artists and designers we need to start showing the person behind the work so we often speak about personal brand uh personal brand is everywhere right now and and I feel that nowadays where the internet globalization has made everyone visible which is a great opportunity for all of us we also need to find new ways to differentiate ourselves and this is where your unique story where your unique personality where your unique path as a designer or lettering artist comes to life and comes to the table before we used to say like let the work speak for itself but nowadays we as lean artists L designers we need to put ourselves in front of the work and we need to start educating audiences about our work educating our clients about our work um showing up like I'm showing up today to to explain the power of letter performs to others like you um so we need to take other position as uh as creatives we are no longer uh in the shadows we need to be in the in front of the work and that's also the one thing that will differentiate us from uh AI because people will come to us because they want to work with real people uh people will come to us because we want to work with someone like you they don't want to go to chat GPT and put a prompt and get some sort of like random artwork they want to work with you and they want your unique perspective and this is where as designers and and creatives where we make the difference where the work that that that we create makes the difference it is no longer just a pretty picture is also conveying a story is also um making a statement right so yes AI is another technological tool that can help us create our work faster and quicker than before but nevertheless us as creatives we are there to edit uh whatever we get out of CH GPT uh we are there to tell stories to support statements um and this is the role that we need to Embrace as designers and and creatives so I hope that shares with you my my vision on AI and I know that this is something we um many of of us are afraid of hey am I going to lose my job am I goingon to you know is creativity going to continue to to be valuable and I can tell you yes because people want to work with people people people are interested in working with people and they want your unique perspective on something they want your unique voice uh and they want you to bring your unique voice to the table and this is something that jgpt cannot give you oh okay I got some questions here from Roma I'm gonna answer just one more of that I love that so paa is asking I work as a ux designer so my portfolio is full of that is it possible to incorporate lettering into it and have a two discipline portfolio so paa I see that challenge I see many many graphity designers branding uh experts uh illustrators having the same issue that you have that you have um you have a background on something and I love that you have that background because you can build upon it you can you can use that to um to inform your next um your next stage in your professional life and I know that you're wondering okay how can I I do ux design and I want to incorporate more interesting work in my portfolio or I want to attract more um you know work that I I really want to do like lettering right the same way that David the story that I shared before was uh as a as the uh After Effects guy was using lettering to infuse more creative work into the assignments that he was getting so the same way I believe you Paula are trying to or Paula are trying to attract more of that work into uh into your uh job or daily work so one possible way forward for you is to start incorporating uh your lettering in your portfolio in a way that in integrates with your ux design what I love about ux uh designers is that they create projects that are really um 360 so a ux design can in h in include things that have to do with web design and and logotype design and branding it brings all together in one interface so you can start incorporating your work as a lettering artist or lettering designer into the um the samples of work that you have inside your portfolio uh so for instance instead of showing um a ux um a ux project that has a logotype made with any other font you can start incorporating uh a logotype that is made with lettering and when a new project Comes Your Way a new ux design project comes your way then you can start solving some parts of that project with your lettering skills so use Sol that um that logotype with h your lettering skills you create a custom logotype instead of using a font or you create some visuals for that ux design uh with your uh lettering expertise so you start infusing some of your work some of your creative work into the work that you already do and this is where you also will start the differentiating yourself as a ux designer from other ux designers out there because you are the ux designer that also can do these beautiful logotypes and these beautiful visuals that no other ux designer does so you you see you start to see how this can help you really differentiate differentiate yourself from others that are doing the same thing that you're doing and I think that that's the power of this expertise and that's something also that is really valuable in our time where internet and globalization has made everybody visible and that's great everybody gets to be seen uh and is very Democratic in that sense that everybody has in their hands the tools to promote their work to Market themselves and at the same time because everybody is visible you need to find new ways to differentiate yourself and becoming you know acquiring an expertise becoming more of an expert in what you do um so creating your own little niche within what you do um can help you do just that can help you differentiate yourself um as a ux designer uh paa you can differentiate yourself because you are the ux designer who has this additional expertise who can create these beautiful visuals and Infuse them in your uh ux designs or you are that branding expert who has this amazing expertise and can also create more custom solutions for their clients or like Rebecca that I mentioned before who um is a packaging designer and thanks to the expertise of lettering she can differentiate herself from other um from other lettering uh from other packaging designers because she's offering the solution uh of lettering already within the the pack her packaging services so this way you are always finding an extra layer to differentiate yourself from others that are doing the same that you are right and paa I think that's a way forward for you and I hope it inspires many of you who have already a certain um a background who have already uh built a certain name for doing a certain thing but you're finding yourself now like kind of competing for the same jobs with other people and you want to differentiate differentiate yourself this is a great way of adding that extra layer that will um make you stand out from others good we covered a lot of ground today let me see if I have have something else here to share remember that we have our second session coming on Wednesday I'm going to share my screen just to wrap up the session I'm going to continue answering questions next week no sorry next session on Wednesday um and and I hope you will be there we will dive into the stages of aing designer and uh and the session will take place in the same time than than today's session so we're going to dive into um the stages of a learning of becoming a learning designer which as as I said uh has six stages and I will let you know or you will find out in that session which stage you are right now and how to move onto the next stage but before we go today I would love to hear from you I would love to for you to write in the chat what would life look like if you could create work that lets you up every day and that people are willing to pay for how would like will life look like if you could create work that inspires you every day and that people are willing to pay for in other words how would life look like if you would be paid for doing work that really lights you up that you enjoy doing how will life be different in that way how would life be feel different if you're not um dreading Sundays like I used to um let me know in the chat wow I love this T my life will be beautiful RI complete and amazing s purposeful Jonathan let a dream come true for the soul oh yes Sarah I will be the happiest person on Earth Christopher I would be excited about creating every single day oh yeah Claudia great Cynthia incred T just so fun fulfilling oh Adon I love this work work will not feel like work powerful as awesome Matias spectacular Katherine blessed paa life will be rewarding I get it yes this is this is how powerful it is to to create um yeah to be paid for doing work you really love as I said before we we spend so much time working um we spend most of our life uh creating and what if that thing that now feels like work that has the weight of work will instead be something that feels a little bit more like creating and before we leave I want to tell you one little anecdote which is that I started doing that shift with my kids now so whenever I go to my studio I tell them I'm going to the studio to create instead of saying I'm going to the studio to work because I want them to start learning from early on that work doesn't need to have that heavy load of work work could be something that brings you Joy work could be something that you really enjoy that you're really looking forward to do and sometimes that means saying to my kids hey today I'm going to go to the studio because I really want to do this thing and we will meet then in the afternoon because I also want to play with you in the afternoon but now Mom has to go to the studio because I need to create something I want to create something that re really means something to me and I love being able to show them this to show them this path to them that they could create for themselves a work that doesn't feel like work and this is why I'm here today as well that you can create for yourself as well a work that doesn't feel that that heavy as work is supposed to feel that you can create a work where you feel happy about every day so what you learned today is that the lettering Revolution is happening and that there lettering artists and designers that are becoming experts and thriving at it and it's also a game changer because after today you can move from saying that the market is oversaturating that you you have there's no space for you to say there's room for me and I can become an expert at this I can learn this and that's when you can set yourself in motion once you understand that you can set yourself in motion and get started with lettering and creating work that really light lights you up and more importantly you can also get paid for that you can also get paid for doing work you really enjoy and that's what this Workshop is all about and this Workshop really puts you in the right path to get there so next up don't forget on Wednesday we will talk about the stages of a lettering designer tomorrow I will meet with those that have a VIP pass um Roma is going to share in the in the in the chat uh a link to join the VIP pass if you haven't done it yes yet these are special sessions intimate sessions where we VIP a pass we're still meeting on Wednesday and um and we will learn about the stages of a lettering designer and the one thing that will help you move forward in your journey so I can wait to see you
