Beginner’s Guide to Adobe Photoshop: Interface Overview

Introduction

  • Welcome to the beginner's guide to Adobe Photoshop.

Setting Up the Workspace

  • Set the workspace to Essentials:
    • Navigate to Window > Workspace > Essentials.
    • Reset to default by selecting Reset Essentials.
  • Activate the Application Frame:
    • Go to Window and select Application Frame.
    • Recommended to keep it on for the course.

Interface Color

  • Photoshop CC has a dark interface.
  • Change interface color:
    • Photoshop > Preferences > Interface (Edit for Windows).
    • Options available to toggle lightness/darkness.

Opening a Document

  • Open the Interface Introduction document from the project folder.
  • Project folder is downloadable via a link in the description.

Interface Elements

Tools Panel

  • Location: Far left, slim panel.
  • Contains icons for various tools.
  • Tools highlighted when active.
  • Some tools work in sets (indicated by a white arrow in the bottom right).
  • Foreground and background colors:
    • Swap using the swap button.
    • Default to black and white using respective button.
  • Column view toggle: Single or double column.

Top Toolbar and Control Panel

  • Standard toolbar: Access properties and features.
  • Control Panel:
    • Displays properties/options of the selected tool.
    • Changes with tool selection.

Right-Hand Panels

  • Panels visible with icons representing them.
  • Includes History, Properties, Layers, Libraries, Color, etc.
  • Tabs within panels for additional features (e.g., Channels, Paths).
  • Customizable panel arrangement.

Bottom Toolbar

  • Displays useful tools and visual aids.
  • Magnification box: Shows document view percentage.
  • Visual aid box: Displays document dimensions and resolution.

Document Tabs

  • Shows currently open documents.
  • Allows navigation between multiple open documents.
