[Music] Rebecca schaer was a beautiful young TV star featured in the program my sister Sam but like John lennen Rebecca was stalked and shot down right outside her home a frightening and senseless crime now Rebecca's accused killer is on trial and a very strange case it is Joel ly with our report I know you think he's kind of strange looking but some of your dates have been pretty strange too actress Rebecca schaer was best known for her role on the TV series my sister Sam her girl next door looks and charm captivated millions and her career was on the upswing branching out from TV into movies my idea of taking a risk is losing my birth control pills or or shopping at sxs without a sale I want to live but I don't know how a 21-year-old Rebecca schaer life was to come to a sudden and violent end in July of 1989 an obsessed fan then 19-year-old Robert BAU came to the entrance of the actress's apartment building and shot her dead you please P the uh this month in Los Angeles BAU is on trial for the crime for the most part he sits passively seeming oblivious to the proceedings going on around him including a videotaped interview with a psychiatrist in which he details the story of his love ha obsession with the actress you know BTO is charged with first-degree murder the defense strategy is to use bto's history of mental illness from the age of 13 to get him a sentence lighter than life in prison but Rebecca Schaefer's parents who are attending the trial aren't buying what the defense is selling he's responsible for what he did nevertheless a psychiatrist who specializes in analyzing celebrity stalkers took the stand to give a detailed account of his interviews with BAU then described a voice in my head that was quote vo in my head end quote he sometimes thought that that was God the psychiatrist testified that BTO told him he identified with Mark David Chapman the man who shot former Beetle John lennin and when BTO found out that the psychiatrist had at one time interviewed John hinley the man who shot President Reagan because he was fixated on actress jod Foster BTO asked the psychiatrist did he seem normal like me Dr Deets testified that BTO had once fixated on The Late Samantha Smith the girl famous for traveling to the Soviet Union on a personal peace Mission BTO also had a passing interest in pop music star Debbie Gibson BTO said he got the idea to hire a private eye to find Schaefer's address after reading a magazine article that said the man who stabbed actress Teresa Selana did the same thing Bardo traveled from from Tucson to La five times in search of schaer perhaps the most bizarre Revelation centered around a song on the Joshua Tree album by Irish rock group You2 BTO told the psychiatrist the lyrics in the song exit somehow told him his Destiny the lyric pistol weigh in heavy gave him his idea for the mission then the defense attorney actually played the song in court [Music] anybody who was in the courtroom and observed this firsthand would have to be a fool to sayate that this was a stunt or contrive somehow this proves exactly what Dr de has been trying to say that he is severely mentally ill on the day of the killing BAU visited Rebecca schaer twice the first time he left Overjoyed but on the second visit something went wrong this boy her here bless it out she just screaming oh my God K oh no oh no she's going why why she's screaming she's just straight screaming why why no matter what the judge ultimately decides Robert bto's lawyer is certain of this in my opinion his life is over just as Rebecca schaer's life is over well BTO agreed to let a judge decide the case instead of a jury when the prosecution agreed not to ask for the death penalty and we will let you know the outcome of that very disturbing trial and Inside Edition we'll be right back [Music]
