Understanding the Book of Job

Hi everyone. I'm excited to talk about Job today because there seems to be a lot of confusion regarding the book of Job. What about Job? We hear that all the time when sickness comes, when disease comes, when calamity comes. We say, well, what about Job? It happened with Job. And so God and the enemy must be in partnership or God is at least allowing. Satan to come and take us out. And so there's a lot of theology based on this book of Job. So I want to break it down for you and hopefully bring some clarity to that. And I will say that we don't know all of the pieces of the book of Job. It seems like it's a little bit missing in context. We don't know a lot about that, but I will say we don't have other information. scripture to back up the account that happened to Job. Now I'm not saying it didn't happen to Job. It's absolutely real. It's absolutely true. All scripture is God breathed. It's all true. Job said all these things, but it doesn't necessarily mean that that is our doctrine because it was said. So let me help you unpack that a little bit. But before we get into all of that, A little history about Job. Many believe that he was born in the time around Abraham's time, way back where the patriarchs would have been. So this would have been a time somewhere between Adam and Abraham. We don't really know. So again, the scripture isn't super clear, but we do know that Job was one of the first biblical books written. So it was way back, even though in your Bible, it's, you know, toward the, you know, first one third of your of your Bible. But it was one of the first books written as far as the timeline goes. And he definitely lived before Moses time. He was not in covenant. He had no idea who God was. He had no idea who Satan was. He said a lot of things that aren't biblically true. But Job didn't know any better. Job didn't know. He did not have a Bible in front of him or a Torah or the law because this was way before that happened. So he did not have scripture to learn about the Lord and he did not have the Holy Spirit teaching him about the Lord. This was before the Holy Spirit had been poured out. So what do we know about Job? We know that he was a great man. He was upright. He was blameless. feared God. He was perfect and he shunned evil. This is God's opinion of Job. We learn about that in Job 1.1. So he's a righteous man. He had a lot of wealth. He had a lot of children and a lot of livestock. He was blessed. He was blessed. But Job, he went before the Lord and offered up burnt offerings before the Lord in case his children sinned. So he did this on a regular basis. And so some people say that he was walking in fear and that this was the open door that allowed or gave Satan permission to come and kill, steal and destroy. Well, we don't know that for a fact, but we do know Job was in fear because Job 2, verse 25 says what I, or I'm sorry, 325 says what I. feared has come upon me. What I dreaded has happened to me. So he was always going before the Lord, offering up burnt offerings for his children in fear that they have messed up and that God is going to do something to my children. And then we know that his children die and he's like, what I feared has come upon me. So whether that was an open door or not, I do not know. but definitely could have been. So again, the Bible doesn't strictly say that, but if you connect some dots, we can assume that that could have been an open door for the enemy to do what he does and he comes to kill, steal, and destroy. So to review just a smidge, in the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve were there. They gave up their authority and their dominion and they gave it to Satan. They gave their legal authority to Satan himself. And so now Satan is God of this world and he has legal authority on the earth. He didn't need to get God's permission. He already had legal authority on the earth. So keep that in mind as we're blaming God for everything. Satan didn't need God's permission. He already had legal. access and authority on the earth from Adam and Eve. So where is Lucifer? Where is Satan at the time at this time? It's somewhere between Adam and the fall and before Moses. So sometime in that, that time gap is when Job was written. And so Satan had been cast down to the earth. Satan was, or Lucifer was a worship angel in heaven. He was beautiful. He had all these musical instruments in them, but he chose to rebel and walk in pride. And he was cast down to the earth. So keep that in mind as we read the text where Satan was. He was roaming the earth, looking and searching for whom he may devour. Okay. Verse one, chapter one, verse six. We're going to pick it up here. One day the angels came to present themselves before the Lord and Satan also came with them. The Lord said to Satan, where have you come from? Do we not think that God himself knew where Satan came from? He knew. He of course knew. But I think he's kind of getting in Satan's face. This is just my take on it. And Satan answered the Lord from roaming the earth and going back and forth in it. Now that you've shunned me, you've sent me down to the earth. Where have you come from, Satan? Where have you come from, Lucifer? Used to be up here in the heavenly realms, all beautiful and everything. And now you're on the earth. Okay, my paraphrase, of course. But just picture this, right? And God's having this conversation with Satan himself. And the Lord said to Satan, have you considered my servant Job? There is no one like him. He is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil. Does God, and then this is Satan, does God fear Job? Does God, sorry, does Job fear God for nothing? Satan replied. Have you not put a hedge of protection around him, which is his nature and his character to protect, not to come and steal, kill and destroy, and his household and everything he has? You have blessed him and his work of his hands so that his flocks and hers are spread throughout the land. But stretch out your hand, God. and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face. Oh, so Satan being the conniving fool that he is, is actually getting in God's face and saying, you put your hand on Job and strike him down, God. And God's like, not my territory. You're the one that comes to kill, steal, and destroy. I come to bring life. I come to bless. I've blessed him. I have a hedge of protection around him. And so the Lord says to Satan, very well, then everything he has is in your hands. But on the man himself, do not lay a finger. So he put a limit on him. Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord. One day when Job's sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother's house, a messenger came to Job and said the oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing nearby. And the Sabaeans attacked and carried them off. They put the servants to the sword. And I'm the only one who has escaped to tell you. So who attacked? The Sabaeans from Satan. Satan used that group of people to take them out. That's one account. The next verse, while he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, The fire of God fell from the sky and burned up the sheep and the servants. Okay, so again, the second one, we blame God. The fire of God came and took out the sheep and the servants. Was it the fire of God? No. Was that their interpretation? Yes. Verse 17, while he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, The Chaldeans formed three raiding parties and swept down on your camels and carried them off. They put your servants to the sword. So this is the third time that the enemy is coming to kill, steal, and destroy. And now this time he's using the Chaldeans, another group, demonic group, taking out livestock and the people. And then still another messenger came and said, your sons and your daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother's house when suddenly a mighty wind. So we have the Sabians fire, the Chaldeans and now wind coming and swept in front of the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on them and they are dead. So. The wind. Was the wind from God? No. Was the fire from God? No. Were these people groups sent from God? No. They were all sent from the demonic realm, from Satan. Okay. At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship and said, Naked I came from my mother's womb and naked I will depart. The Lord gives and the Lord takes away. Did the Lord take away? No, no, no, and no. Job had no idea that it was Satan sending these calamities and these storms to take out Job. Job's family and his livestock. It was not from God. It was not from God. The enemy tried to accuse God and say, you strike him out. And God's like, nope, not my territory. That's your territory. And we read that as permission. Now, whether it was permission or we're just reading that into that, but let me be clear, Satan, Lucifer, already had the authority to come and still kill and destroy on the earth when Adam and Eve gave up their authority and handed the keys of authority to Satan. We know that through scripture that now Satan, Lucifer is God of this world, prince and power of the air. He has limited authority and power, but he is still roaming around seeking whom he may. devour and he doesn't need permission from God. He already has that limited authority. So perhaps that open door to fear was enough that he was able to come in and attack Job. So let's be clear. God is not giving a stamp of approval over every time that Satan wants to come and kill, steal, and destroy. Absolutely not. Now, it was recorded in the Bible that this did happen, that they were up in the throne talking to God. Now, was that the only time that happened? Maybe, maybe. I would love to believe that that was. We don't know, but we do know throughout the entire Bible, there's never another account similar to that where Satan was going up to the throne. So, could it be that this was the first time that Satan... Tried to use his authority to come and steal, kill, and destroy. And he went after Job, the one that God considered righteous and perfect and holy and blameless and awesome. And was he trying to test to see how far he could go? What were his limits? You know, how far can I come in and kill, steal, and destroy before God's going to intervene and put a boundary around that? Perhaps. Again, scripture doesn't exactly say, but many people believe that, that this could have been the first account of when Satan got his authority and Job would have been the first person that he tried to incite God against him and tried to lie to Job that it was from God. And it wasn't. It was indeed from Satan. And how many years have gone by and we're still blaming God for what the... enemy is doing. This doctrine drives me absolutely crazy. God is good. He put a boundary. He did not co-partner or even give permission. I don't believe he didn't need to. Satan already had that. And God is not in cahoots with the enemy. And I do not believe Satan is going up to the throne anymore because I believe Jesus, at least Jesus put an end to it. that. And, you know, it's a little vague, but I, if we read in John 12 or yeah, John 12, um, where I believe Satan no longer has access to the throne. John, sorry, 1 John 3, 8 says that the devil was driven out and he lost his authority. So the verse 31 in, sorry, John 12, now is the time for judgment on this world. Now, now the prince of this world will be driven out. And we know Jesus came to take back what the enemy stole, to get the keys of authority back, and to take care of Satan. And before this time, the Old Testament saints were held in Abraham's bosom. So heaven as we know it, with the throne and the 24 elders and the great cloud of witnesses and all the people that have passed on before us up in heaven itself. This was not the case during... When this was written. No, they were still in the depths of the earth in Abraham's bosom. They were in paradise. That's different than heaven as we know that now. And then when Jesus came, he came to set those captives free. He came down to the depths of the earth and he released the captives. So Abraham and those who had believed in faith, the Old Testament saints, then were risen out of. Abraham's bosom or out of paradise into heaven itself. So you cannot tell me that today in heaven where everything is perfect and beautiful in every way that Satan is entering into heaven and having a conversation with God. No way. No. How? Absolutely no. No, there's no way. Heaven is perfect. There's no darkness in heaven. So there's no way Satan is going before the throne right now. speaking to God and getting permission to do whatever he's doing on the earth. Nope. He already has that ability without God needing to approve or give his permission or giving a stamp of approval on. So I want you just to know who God truly is. And he's not in partnership with the enemy. And he's not even giving him a short leash, which I've heard a lot of times. That would still be a bit of a partnership. Like. okay, you can do this. Like, no, they're not having conversations anymore. I believe he's been dealt with. And, um, if, if the, if the devil is coming to kill, steal and destroy, it's because we have an open door because we live in a fallen world. It's not God behind it. So please let's rightly divide the word. So then after this happens, um, in verse nine to nine, Job's wife says, are you still holding on to this integrity? Curse God and die. So Job's wife had no revelation of who God was. So at least Job was walking in integrity to the best of his ability. But his wife was like, just curse God and die. And that's where the enemy wants you. Just curse God. Let's blame God for what I'm doing. And then Job's friends aren't any better. And so for like 40 chapters, they go on and on and on in this horrific conversation about who they think God is. And it goes on and on and on. And it's quite depressing, actually. So again, wrong theology, but they did have that conversation and it was written down. But then at the end of Job. Verse 42, verse 3, Job says, Surely I spoke of things I did not understand. Things too wonderful for me to know. My ears have heard you, but now my eyes have seen you. Therefore I despise myself and I repent in dust and ashes. I change my mind about God. I repent, Job says. And then verse... Seven, it says, after the Lord has said these things to Job, he said to Eliphaz, the Temanite, I am angry with you and your two friends. You three, I'm angry with you because you have not spoken of me what is right. You've not spoken biblical truth. You have not spoken of my nature and my character. This is my paraphrase. This is my understanding of the scripture. I could be wrong here. But Job said many things that he did not understand. So, and then what happens? God blesses and gives Job double of everything. Exactly double. He restores everything that the enemy look, took and stole and God in his goodness and his mercy and grace restored all of that and more double for Job's trouble. So we can learn a lot from Job. Um, we can learn, we can learn a lot about the goodness of God, but what we need to understand is that God is good all the time. There's no darkness in him and he is not having come. conversations with Satan himself, allowing him to do what he does. And Satan does not need the permission. He is the God of this world, the prince and power of the air. He has legal right because of the fall to kill, steal, and destroy, unfortunately. Now we're under covenant as believers, but unbelievers are not under covenant. And Satan does have a level of authority to do what Satan does. does. So I hope that helps you a bit. Let me look over my notes to see if there was anything else that might be beneficial. I think I will just leave it here. We don't need to belabor this point, but we are followers of Jesus under a new and better covenant with promises, with the blood of Jesus. And we have all those things that Job did not have. So I believe that that is not the way God and the enemy are working today. When people say, what about Job? I say, what about Jesus? I'm not discounting that the account of Job didn't happen, but I do not believe we can make an entire theology over one account that happened under the old, um, in the old testament. So Let me know what questions you have. If you have some insight on that, I would love to hear that too. Again, I don't claim to know all the answers, but I do know the goodness of God. And I do know that they're not in partnership together and that God is not allowing Satan to do what he's doing. That whole doctrine has just messed up so many people. And I hope the truth sets you free. Until next time, have a great day.
