Glenn's Health Journey and Recovery Tips

foreign hi guys I am Glenn with Mr craftyman um generally this channel is a channel where I demonstrate different art projects that I'm working on but lately it has kind of turned into something else uh at least temporarily for those of you who have been following the channel um you have probably noticed I haven't done any craft projects in a little bit and if you saw my last video which I posted a few weeks ago there was a reason for that and the reason was that on April 21st I was diagnosed with stage four kidney disease with a GFR of 25. um in the last video I just kind of showed some results from my lab tests and everything showing that my GFR was 25 and that I had got it all the way up to 67 in the normal range I had planned on making a follow-up video shortly after that and life kind of got in the way I've had a lot of people messaging me asking me what I did so this particular video I'm going to tell you exactly what I did now before I get started on this I have to tell you something I am not a medical doctor um so what I'm going to tell you here is just what I did I went against the advice of uh my nephrologist and my primary care provider and one of my new my renal nutritionists because what they were telling me just didn't sound right to me and I kind of consider myself a pretty intuitive guy and when I start hearing something that doesn't sound right I take a deeper look at it so that being said I'm not a medical doctor um I would recommend that you seek the advice of a medical doctor if you decide to go against their advice like I did that's on you um but for me it worked out very well so let me let me uh start from the beginning for those who did not see the last video so for the last 14 years I have had type 2 diabetes and very high blood pressure not just a little high very high and I kind of took my diabetes medication on and off and I was one of those people who kind of figured well I'm taking my diabetes medication that's all I need to do I can still eat whatever I want so even though I was on I believe 2 000 milligrams of Metformin a day and also Glipizide I was still eating what I wanted and my A1c I believe it was uh a little bit less than a year ago was 14. um and they told me that it was probably it was probably higher than 14 but that's as high as they could measure um one thing that I've learned is even on the diabetes medication that doesn't that's not a license to eat what you'd like to eat you still have to be very careful what you eat so I have also got I also had that the very high blood pressure high cholesterol and pretty bad sleep apnea I was also very overweight I was about 215 pounds so let me uh let me start with telling you uh the story from April 21st and again this is for people who did not watch the last video um I had been going to the veterans administration since I'm a veteran for my medical care but once coronavirus started it was pretty much impossible to get an appointment with them even a telephone appointment they would make a telephone appointment and then they wouldn't keep the appointment so what I ended up doing is going to the Tanner Clinic a local doctor here in my area just to get my diabetes medication refilled well on April 21st when I went in to get my diabetes medication refilled she refilled it and as she was walking out the door she said hey do you mind if we do Labs today and I was like well sure why not so they did the labs and she said uh as I was leaving she said I'll get a hold of you later on today with the results and let you know what they were so I was like okay well she didn't get a hold of me that day and I almost forgot about the labs because I had gotten what I had had went there for and that was my medication so the next day of all places I was sitting on the toilet um just going through my cell phone and I started seeing text messages come in from the Walmart Pharmacy and I figured oh okay there's they're sending all of my prescriptions through like I had requested about that time the telephone rang and it was the doctor's office and she said I was just calling to let you know that I was sending your prescriptions through to the pharmacy and I said okay well thank you and that would have been the end of the conversation except I said hey did you get the results of the blood test back and I kid you not just like this she said yeah you have stage three kidney disease now notice I said stage three um and I had never heard of kidney disease before I didn't know how many stages there were I knew absolutely nothing about it but I figured if there was a stage three there had to be a one and a two and there may be something after stage three so I said well what happens if I go to the next stage and she said you're done and basically that was the end of the conversation I said okay well thanks a lot and I immediately called over to the VA and I set up an appointment and this appointment they scheduled um I believe it was 10 days later was the earliest I could get in so I believe a couple days before the appointment I stopped over at the VA and I did Labs again and the day of the appointment I went in and to see my doctor and he said so what brings you in here today I said well um basically told him the story about how I was trying to get an appointment during coronavirus and I couldn't get one so I've been going to this other doctor and I said well and they told me I have stage three kidney disease and he went into his computer and started looking at my labs from the VA lab work I had done a couple days later and he said no you don't you have stage four kidney disease and that just floored me because I had already already started doing a little bit of research and working a little bit trying to to improve things but I didn't have enough knowledge and experience with it at that time and I mean I was absolutely devastated he told me that my GFR um my GFR was 25 and my bun was 81. and the Bon is normally supposed to be below 25 and he wanted to admit me to the hospital and start doing dialysis that day just because of the Bon levels and I told him I said you know I I can't do this right now um it's my son's birthday and I've also got to go to Idaho this weekend to visit my 95 year old grandpa and he said well can you come back on Friday and I said no I can't I'm not going to be back until Sunday afternoon he says okay can you come back on Monday and I said yes I can come back on Monday so I came back on Monday oh and he told me he said in the meantime I drink about 90 ounces of water a day so I did that and I came back on Monday I did the labs again and he had told me he would get a hold of me that evening I didn't hear anything didn't hear anything until about Thursday and Thursday one of the doctors from the VA called and they said yeah I'm just calling to tweak your medication a little bit um and apparently the bun had dropped down to like 31. so they felt that that was enough drop that they kind of left me alone um but in the meantime they did schedule an appointment with a nephrologist and uh that was very very scary to me the nephrologist um I was kind of thinking about like like playing a video game you go through these these different levels and each level has a boss but then at the very last level you have like the the big boss you have to conquer and that's what I thought of uh the nephrologist as so before I I really get started here what I want to show you is I want to show you this paper and someone responded to the last video complaining about how they couldn't see crap and just tell them the numbers they believe me but I want you to see this anyway I I think it's important for you to see the proof and to see what I did so we may have to wait a second for this to focus so this here was my GFR and you can see a GFR of 25 here and this here was taken on May 10th at the V8 so that's that's really important for you to see let's wait for it to get back in Focus I think that's important for you to see and what I'm going to do here before I show you my 90-day results is I'm going to tell you step by step exactly what I did um if you have any questions questions on this you can the quickest way to get a hold of me is to email me my email is Glenn jl69 gmail.com that's spelled golf Lima Echo November November Juliet lima69 gmail.com and I will also leave the email in the in the um description so remember when this all started I had had diabetes for 14 years very high blood pressure um extremely high it was so high that I went to the hospital once because I had fallen off a ladder and they didn't even treat me for falling off the ladder they saw my blood pressure and started treating the blood pressure very high cholesterol and pretty bad sleep apnea so I'm assuming if you're watching this video you're having kidney issues um and some of you have even got diabetes and your kidney issues are caused by the diabetes those of us who have diabetes are kind of hit with a double whammy here those of you who don't have diabetes who are just having kidney issues and low GFR issues um this might sound funny but consider yourselves very fortunate and as I go through everything that I did here um you're going to kind of understand what I'm talking about so what we need to do is if you're overweight the weight is the first thing we need to look at so I was I was overweight so the way that I did this is I looked at my target weight how much I wanted to weigh and those of you I've just told you that I was overweight if you look at my previous videos where I'm doing crafts you can see how big I was I was a pretty big boy so what I did is I picked out my target weight how much did I want to weigh and I wanted to weigh 160 pounds and right now um I weigh 160 pounds maybe 158 I was out of town this weekend so whenever I'm not home it's a little bit hard for me to stay on top of my diet properly so here is the important thing if you're overweight um I'm sure that all of you who are overweight sometime or another in your life you have gone on a diet well we're kind of doing a diet here but not a real diet um so what I did is I Googled how many calories a day does a male need to eat or or how much how many calories a day does a 160 pound male need to eat to maintain his weight and for me that was like 2 300 pounds now remember I was 215 so what I started doing because if I was only like uh counting calories with a regular diet or something it would take forever to lose this weight and I did it in actually less than 90 days I lost that weight in less than 90 days because I was eating like I was 160 pounds so I was creating a deficit so my body started eating the fat and the excess weight until I reached 160 pounds once I reached 160 pounds I went into maintenance mode where I was just maintaining that weight and we're going to talk more about the the way to do that in a minute for somebody with diabetes so what I started doing for food and this was very important to a friend of mine Dr Daniel Welsh out of California he's also a flight instructor and had been working with my son teaching him how to fly and working on uh helping me maintain my license I got a hold of him and I told him what was going on and he said oh that's not good um you can eat all the fat you want just stay away from sugar so then I sent him copies of my blood labs and he said you know on second thought I'd like to see you on a plant-based diet and that didn't sound extremely good to me I mean I eat vegetables I've been kind of picky about the vegetables I eat but but I do eat them and so for the next the next couple weeks I was eating only vegetables and it was kind of tough um salads and and uh trying to find plant-based items and everything um and by the way at Walmart in the frozen food section they have a healthy area I think it says healthy foods and it's full of plant-based Foods my favorite foods from that section um are these sausage patties um they're they're probably just small round sausage patties and they smell like sausage they taste like sausage and they're pretty good for you what I would do in the evenings I would make my salad and I would fry one of those up so it was slightly crispy chop it up put it on top of the salad then in the dressing section they have a plant-based ranch dressing from Hidden Valley and it tastes just like the regular Ranch so that was pretty good stuff um so I and as long as we're talking about the food in the plant-based section something that I think is very important that I should tell you is just because it's plant-based or vegan or even vegetarian doesn't mean it's good for you um as kidney patients or people with kidney issues it's very important that we look at the back of the package um especially if you've got diabetes too so the main things that I look at on the back of a food package I'm looking so in the beginning when you're if you're still overweight you're looking at the calories because you don't want to go over on your calories so I'm looking at the protein we'll talk about why the protein is important in a minute um I'm looking at um the carbs I'm looking at the sodium I'm looking at the fiber and the calories okay the reason that I'm looking at the calories I kind of like what I mentioned you don't want to go over your calories it's very important you don't go over your calories because weight loss is part of my program I'm looking at the carbs because as a diabetic oh and then I'm also looking at Sugar on the back of the package I do not eat anything with sugar I don't care if it's one gram of sugar or less than a gram I do not eat anything with sugar so if it has sugar I put it back um so the reason we're looking at the carbs is because carbs turn into sugar and a formula that I located and I'll kind of make this easy for you however many carbs it has let's say you eat a piece of bread that has 10 carbs and this is not whole grain bread it's just white bread if you multiply those carbs by three that's 30 that's how many points your blood sugar is going to go up um the only bread that I found that's actually safe for a diabetic to eat they have this bread that's in the frozen section at Walmart there's some of it called net2 and some called net three and that's because it only has two or three carbs and sometimes I might throw one of those sausage patties on that and use like some vegan mayonnaise or something and make myself a little sandwich something else that's in the frozen section at Walmart that I really like because they have plant-based bacon and it tastes exactly like bacon it's great stuff you fry it up just like bacon and I'll make like a BLT with that stuff with that net tour net three bread and that's great I love it Okay so basically I took the the plant base to step further also because I started noticing that when reading the package there were phosphates and there was potassium in it um and you also want to I was talking about protein earlier you want to keep an eye on the protein because protein is very difficult for the kidneys to process especially animal protein that's from dairy and from Meats um and that's why we're doing plant-based and some of you are probably out of the game right now you're not willing to give up your meats or anything like that um so if you're one of those people thanks for watching um this does take dedication and it takes motivation my motivation was thoughts of my family standing around my deathbed and I'm only 53 years old also I have a little baby grandson who's like 13 months old and I was watching my wife feed him and I was sitting there thinking to myself I'm not going to be able to see that kid grow up and it just made me so sad um I mean I would cry in the driveway when I would get home from work I'd cry in the Walmart parking lot I just wasn't willing to to accept my fate to fate that all the doctors that are saying is incurable um so we've talked about the target weight that's very important so if you are overweight come up with your target weight if you're underweight you're going to come up with a Target weight a couple pounds more however much you feel like you need to to weigh and you're going to eat as if you were that weight already um now something that was kind of a game changer for me and and I want to make very clear that as we go through this video I am not being paid to make this video I'm going to be showing you some products and items that I used and just because I mentioned them does not mean that uh that I endorse them 100 percent or or they're paying me because they're not um I was having a problem for a couple weeks I told you with the foods because I had no experience with plant-based I was sitting there oh wow I just have to eat vegetables and everything all the time well if you go on Amazon there is a book and it's called stop stopping kidney disease food guide and that book is full of recipes inside of it and for those of you who don't have diabetes great good for you you can cook any recipe in that book this book was not really written with diabetics in mind so if you do have diabetes fortunately these recipes tell you exactly how many calories how many carbs how much protein all this kind of stuff is in each recipe so look for the ones that are really low carb also when you make these recipes it's enough for several meals um so if it's if it's just giving you the carbs and nutritional facts for the entire recipe you can divide it up into how many servings it is and and you'll know what the carbs and calories are there but yeah the uh the stopping kidney disease um food guide and it's a guy named Lee hole who put that book together and that book my favorite recipe inside of it is the vegetable marsala I love that and then there's like uh this this chili that I like inside of it but since I'm a diabetic one of the ingredients in that chili no it's a tortilla soup that's what it is um but tortillas have have a lot of carbs so I just can't put the tortilla chips inside of it um then and when you get that book it's going to kind of open up your your eyes and your mind you're going to start being able to come up with recipes and stuff yourself um something else that I do instead of drinking milk um I buy the the no sugar added almond milk and um the no sugar added soy milk and we use that for different recipes now here's something else that's very very important to do in the beginning in fact let me go backwards just a couple steps and I'm going to tell you what you need to do in the beginning what you can start today while you're waiting on some of these other items that I'm going to be talking about to arrive one of the things you need to start doing today is I I went to Walmart and I got this 33 ounce water bottle here and I just keep refilling it if I I've had this bottle for months um so what you want to be doing is drinking at least a half ounce of water per pound of your body weight with bad kidneys it it might be difficult for you to drink so much water but with weak kidneys it's very important to stay very very hydrated and if you didn't do anything else if all you did was drink water I can about guarantee you that your GFR is going to rise somewhat and the GFR is very very important to me to me the GFR is almost like a life timer everything you read on the Internet is going to tell you that as you get older your GFR automatically decreases with age and they say starting at about 30 years old some of them some places you read say it decreases about a half a point for a year most of them say it decreases about one point for a year per year so if you had a GFR of like like 25 that I did and and traditionally they start dialysis When You Reach 15. um then if my kidneys were were decreasing at a normal Pace that would mean I had about 10 years but unfortunately when you have kidney disease your GFR decreases a little bit quicker so if nothing else what we're trying to do is we're trying to stop it in its tracks and keep it from decreasing or just get it to decrease at a normal rate so we're drinking the water that's the first thing the second thing is we're immediately going on a plant-based diet and I started to tell you that just a regular plant-based diet wasn't enough for me I went on a raw plant-based diet and what that meant is I went to the store I I wasn't buying canned vegetables frozen vegetables I was buying raw vegetables in the produce section cutting them up making the food myself that way I was sure there were no chemicals no preservatives none of that inside of it the other thing that you can do and this here will help with the diabetes it'll help with the blood pressure it'll also help with your kidney function is you need to start getting in shape I probably just lost another couple of people with that um but it's not that bad this is what I do this is what I've been doing I started um started my physical fitness routine on April 24th so what I do I I started out going to the gym after work so I would sit there all day thinking to myself yeah after work today I'm going to the gym going to the gym well by the time you finish up with work you're kind of trying to talk yourself out you're like well you know I'm really tired I worked real hard today it would be nice to just go home and maybe take a bath eat dinner and lay down and watch TV um so what I started doing is I started going in the morning I would get up early and go to the gym now here's what I do and this is all I do um and for some of you who might be really overweight or not extremely mobile this will work for you I get on the elliptical trainer and I get on the elliptical trainer for 20 minutes what I'm concerned about on the elliptical trainer is not so much fat burning as it is cardio I want to get my heart rate up and I want to get my heart rate up into the peak cardio area because that helps my high blood pressure and it's also helping my my diabetes and it's helping my kidneys so I believe I started out on the elliptical trainer like level two or level three right now I'm at level eight so for 15 minutes I'll go to town on that thing and in the beginning you're not gonna have to go real quick to get your heart rate heart rate up my heart rate needs to be up to like 155 to 160. um for my Peak uh cardio and so I'll I'll stay on the elliptical trainer for 15 minutes as soon as 15 minutes are up I slow it down to a walk so I'll slow it down to a wok and during that five minutes normally for the first minute I'm kind of catching my breath and after about one minute has elapsed and I've got about four minutes left I'll drink 16 ounces of water so and and that's kind of my goal is to have half of this bottle of water drink before I reach 20 minutes once I reach 20 minutes I'm finished and what I normally do or in the beginning what I did is I had something at the gym to reward myself and that was like going and sitting in the sauna in the hot tub and then getting in the massage chair now I get to the gym do my thing get out and go to work um so what now I'm going to mention something that's that's a little bit a little bit tricky well actually for you diabetics I want to I want to show you something first something that was a wonderful tool for me so I told you that like a year ago my A1C was 14. um at the time I was diagnosed with kidney disease it was 8.4 um at my last set of labs it was 5.2 5.2 uh is no indication of diabetes whatsoever that's lower than most people with no diabetes have so one of the tools that has been the absolute best tool for me as a diabetic was the freestyle Libre 2. and what this is you don't have to have this little sensor here if you want to get the scent the um or the the little sensor you can um or you can use an app on your telephone but if you look on the back of my arm you can see this little dot this little dot is a sensor and it has a tiny little probe that you can't even feel if you put it on yourself um once every two weeks it costs 35 dollars for two weeks I believe when I first got hold of it I paid for the meter and the sensor I think it was like 125 dollars that was all so what it is is it's a continuous glucose monitor so when you turn it on all you have to do is tap you just tap your um your little sensor with it and you can see what the blood sugar is and you can see mine is 87 87 is well within the normal range of someone that does not have diabetes um something else that's really neat about this meter is you can go into the review history here and average glucose so it says my average glucose for seven days has been 102. and that's because the other day my blood sugar was a tiny bit low so I figured I was just going to find something to to eat that would raise it up a little bit while there was no nutritional event information available and I had a like a little Eggo waffle about that big and it shot my blood sugar up and ruined my average for the week then for 14 days I am at 98. an average of 98 for 30 days I'm at an average of 96. and for 90 days I'm at an average of 104. um so this here has been a good tool the reason why and for those of you who are diabetics you probably don't know this it takes about two hours for whatever it is you ate to fully affect you and you're probably used to getting up in the morning pricking your finger maybe pricking your finger at lunchtime pricking your finger in the evening you're you're not really seeing what's going on this here as I said is a continuous glucose monitor so if you look here I'm going to get a little bit close here because I want you to be able to see this you'll see the Gray Line and in that Gray Line you'll see that black line going through there you want to stay inside that Gray Line that's how your blood sugar is at any given time and it has the times down below so if you eat something you weren't supposed to eat and you see it Spike up or something double think eating that next time that's probably not a good thing for you something else I want to mention to the diabetics is something called Don phenomenon and this here I did not know about the biggest problem with man diabetes is even though I had a 14 years nobody ever sat me down and stressed the dangers of diabetes diabetes is extremely dangerous extremely dangerous it can attack your eyes your kidneys I mean you see these people getting carted around at Walmart um on the handicap carts with no legs because they got their legs cut off from diabetes it's extremely dangerous um so anyway one of these things here and get the sensors and and I pay for this out of pocket the VA does not cover this the VA would only give this to me if I was a type 1 diabetic or if I was on insulin and since I wasn't I was responsible for buying it myself there's another one called the Dexcom the Dexcom if you're paying for it yourself it's over a thousand dollars so this here is very affordable and the pharmacists will tell you it's one of the best things okay so earlier you heard me talk about how it's very difficult for the kidneys to process protein especially animal protein so that's why we went plant-based was so we could eat a protein that was easier for the kidneys to process and some of you are sitting there thinking right now well my nephrologist and the nephrologist is a kidney doctoral my nephrologist or my renal nutrition told me that meat's okay just don't eat so much of it well there are they're also going to tell you that kidney disease is not curable and that diabetes is not curable so the the average American eats about a hundred and fifty percent more protein than their body can actually handle per day so what happens is when you eat more protein than your body can process the rest of it gets kind of stored and discarded and everything you don't need that and you don't want to put that extra workload on your kidneys so what I did is I put myself on it and this was for 90 days I put myself on a very low protein diet so there's low protein and very low protein the way to think about this is let's say you have a garden hose and you have a swimming pool full of water and you're holding a funnel with this garden hose and you're trying to empty that swimming pool full of water through that garden hose it the garden hose just can't handle that so instead let's say that we took like a cup just like a one cup measuring cup full of water we had the garden hose with the funnel on it and we dumped that cup in the garden hose can handle that easily absolutely no problem now think of that garden hose as your kidneys you want to give your kidneys what it can handle but at the same time you have to keep your nutrition up you have to eat the the nutrition that your body needs so now I'm going to introduce you to a couple products that I used I don't necessarily like one more than the other once I get into them I'll tell you why I chose one over the other so on a very low protein diet what I had to calculate and I'll put that I don't have the calculation sitting here in front of me so I'm going to put it in the the description below this video so you can see it and you can do your own calculations but basically what I did with the calculations is I told you my target weight was 160 pounds I wanted to eat like I was 160 pounds already so with the very low protein what I needed is I needed 45 grams of protein a day keep an eye on your protein meat has tons of protein anything that you that you buy at the store plants I mean anything keep track of the protein um so what I did is I needed 45 grams of protein a day and that's even a little bit difficult for the kidneys to handle so here's what I did I divided that in half over in Europe uh they have this medical food that's readily available it's not readily available here in the United States so what I did is I divided that 45 grams of protein in a half in half so I was eating 22.5 grams of protein in food and then the other 22.5 I was getting from a medical food and this one here is made here in Utah this is called keto Arena and I believe let's see their website is keto rina.com that's spelled k-e-t-o-r-e-n-a.com [Music] neither of these is extremely cheap but the keto arena is less expensive than this other one here which is called albuterix and you'll notice on the albutrix it says albutrix and then it's got like an S4 they have S1 S2 S3 S4 S5 and that's like stage four kidney disease so each one of these tablets has got five grams of protein in it so what I was doing is I was eating one and a half tablets per day I don't know if this one's open or not per day I was eating one and a half tablets per meal um to reach my 22 and a half grams of protein um for the day and the medical food and then remember I was eating my plant-based food to get my 22 and a half there and you need to do that for a minimum of 90 days now I'll let you know that your kidneys can keep improving for a period of up to 18 months that's a year and a half so if you just do this for 90 days this whole plan for 90 days your kidneys improve and you thought great everything's all better and you stop you're going to slump right back to where you were in the first place this isn't just a temporary plan this is a new lifestyle if you want to live you've got to do it and personally I want to live um so there's a couple of things that that I want to mention to you a couple sayings that I kind of picked up along the way and they they stick with me because going to the store or even walking through the kitchen you're seeing things that you'd like to eat and you know you shouldn't eat them um so one of the things is a spoonful can ruin a day a meal can ruin a week so that means if you you figure oh I'm just gonna have a little taste of this brownie that can ruin and throw you off for the entire day especially if you're a diabetic if you eat one meal you shouldn't have that can ruin everything that you did for the entire week so remember that a spoonful can ruin a day a meal can ruin a week now the other saying and this here is very easy to remember I think of this all the time and I believe it was Socrates that said this everything you put into your mouth is either medicine or poison so which is it that you're putting into your mouth and in the beginning it might be a little confusing to you when I'm buying food that's pre-made at the grocery store if I start seeing things inside of it that I can't pronounce um if I start seeing um phosphates and sugar and stuff like that I just don't buy it I'm extremely picky what I eat and I'm I'm like a tweaker when it comes to my to my health you can see I'm wearing two like I've got a Fitbit on I've got this other watch on and they're both monitoring different things at the same at the same time I'm always on top of my heart rate my resting heart rate um what I've noticed is when I start to get sick my resting heart rate starts going up and also your blood sugar will go up I was starting to talk about that dawn phenomenon earlier and I threw myself off what Don phenomenon is um and this is for diabetics once you get one of these monitors you're going to see it let's say you you wake up first thing in the morning you look at your meter and it says your blood sugar is like 80. and so you figured great I'm all ready for breakfast to go to the bathroom I normally spend probably about 10 minutes sitting on the toilet reading my email in the morning then you go in the kitchen to make breakfast you check your blood sugar again and it's like 105 and you're like what the heck is going on here I didn't even eat anything yet and what that is is it's your body kind of preparing itself for the day kind of warming up like you warm up your car in the winter time before you go outside get it started so it's all heated up and ready to drive your body starts pumping hormones through to start raise and it starts raising your blood sugar um so don't think that if you had a shake for breakfast which I'll I'll give you the recipe for in um the comments also that that shake is so bad for you that it's raising your blood sugar after two hours up to like 1 35 or 150 it's not that's the dawn phenomenon I drink that same exact Shake in the afternoon at three o'clock and it barely bumps it up like 10 points um and the dot and also you'll notice that your blood pressure is higher in the mornings because your body is doing the same thing it's getting ready it's starting to pump things through so remember you have to do this and at least give it 90 days do everything that I mentioned here for 90 days it helps if you could get Labs at the beginning of the 90 days and then get Labs at the end of the 90 days um so I want to show you the end of my first 90 days you saw the beginning you saw that I was at a GFR of 25 my bun was 81. um my A1C was 8.4 and the doctor was complaining about that A1C he's like Glenn your A1C is 8.4 I said well that's an improvement it was it was 14 a few months back so this here was the results at the end of my 90 days so you can see here my GFR is now 67. um and on this also my A1C is on there as 5.2 now I want to show you something very interesting here now remember uh doctors consider anything above 60 to be in the normal range so my A1C here was 67. now as I was scraping around look at what I found here I found um some labs from April 23rd 2008 so that was years ago this was before I even knew about a GFR or cared about a GFR but look at this see up here at the top it says my GFR is 66. so I don't know exactly where my GFR was before um I mean how long it took to drop but basically what I have done is I have gotten my GFR back to where it was 14 years ago and that's pretty amazing um and the day after I got these lab results back I started getting telephone calls um from various doctors and they're like we've never seen this before what did you do how did you do this and I wasn't very forthcoming with the information for a little bit um that I I didn't really say much to the doctors about it um so I had phone calls from two doctors and also um one of these medical food companies when they caught wind of it they were they were like well we've never seen it go that high we've seen it uh go up maybe a hundred percent but never 150 percent and so then I went to the nephrologist I saw two nephrologists just a couple days after I I did these Labs the first nephrologist walks into the room and she's um she's up good good to see you back and she's looking at the labs and she says you don't have kidney disease and that was actually the second no the third nephrologist I had seen the first one told me that the damage was done from too much ibuprofen over my lifetime because um because I had problems with chronic headaches and by the way since I started doing this I've had absolutely no migraines or headaches um so she says you don't have kidney disease and uh we talked for a little bit she walked out and then the second nephrologist comes in named Dr Cho she looks at the labs and she says you don't have diabetes and I said yeah I've had diabetes for 14 years and she said you're you're A1C does not indicate diabetes so I was really happy with that and something else I want to mention is over over this period of 90 days it wasn't even the full 90 days I Believe by the end of June I was off of all medications so the first medication to go was the metformin for diabetes because my blood sugar was just dropping too low so then once that was gone my blood sugar was still dropping low so I had the Glipizide so they said well cut the Glipizide in half so I cut the Glipizide in half and it was still dropping though low so they said well cut that half in half so I did that still dropped low so they took it away then I was left and they had taken away all the cholesterol and stuff before that but then I was left with the high blood pressure medication well my blood pressure was dropping very low I mean I would squat down and almost pass out and in fact I did pass out in my kitchen um I got up at night um don't remember what I was doing going to the bathroom or something um and I would oh and I had asthma I haven't had to use an inhaler anymore so I went to get my asthma inhaler I squatted down to to use it took a couple pups off of it um stood up next thing you know um I woke up and I was laying on the bathroom floor so yeah so then my sleep apnea I believe I used to have like 20 episodes per hour um the sleep apnea is something that I just found out within the past week that it's gone um the way that I found out is that same doctor that had told me to go on the plant-based I was talking to him about my resting heart rate and everything and I said yeah I think they adjusted my CPAP machine wrong because my resting heart rate is going up and he said why are you still on a CPAP I said well I mean they just gave it to me again the other day and he said uh most of sleep apnea is based on Obesity being overweight you shouldn't need it anymore so I went back and I looked at the machine I went into the metrics and I'm having 0.2 events per hour so that's down from like 20 and they say anything below five is normal so I'm not even having one event per hour so this here healed all of that too so that is basically what I'm what I'm doing and I'm still doing just because the 90 days is over um doesn't mean and everything was great doesn't mean that I can stop I know that if I stop I'm going to go right back to where I I was don't let anybody sit there and tell you oh yeah you can have me yeah you can have soda I drink only water um there is this stuff that my doctor told me about it's called l m n t and it is a a little powder you can get to put in your bottle of water and the flavor they call it uh Citrus salt and one of those little packets has a thousand milligrams of salt in it I eat 1 500 milligrams of salt a day like consistently on my labs I'm coming up short on sodium so that's what I started doing to be able to keep my sodium up and it worked so I'll have one of those packets that gives me a thousand it's much easier for me to come up with 500 milligrams of salt a day than it is um a thousand there's one more product that I take too and I bought it on on Amazon and it's called kidney renew in fact give me just a second I want to grab the bottle just to make sure that's the right name it's either kidney renew or kidney restore hold on foreign so I'm glad I went and checked because it's called kidney restore and I get this on Amazon I actually subscribed to this um so I get one of these every month and what I did is I had subscribed to it early on and I ended up running out and I had like five days that I didn't have any of this and I take one in the morning and I take one in the evening um so it's a good idea to buy to buy or sign up for the subscription on Amazon but then also from another seller on there just buy a bottle by itself so you have two bottles that way you're never gonna run out because if you finish your first bottle in the the subscription hasn't come yet you can dig into that second bottle um so I had told you that there was one of these products that I actually [Applause] that I actually started using regularly and that's the albuterix it's not it's not that I think the albutrix is better than the keto Arena the reason why I went with the albuterix there's two two reasons one reason is with every bottle of the albuterix that they send you they send you a little bottle of the micro tricks for free and this is like a renal vitamin so you take one of these uh one of these every day in the morning but that was part of it but the real reason is is in the beginning I had a lot of questions and the keto Reno was the one that I started with and even though keto arena is here in Utah where I am I could not get a hold of these people every time I would call it was some sort of an answering service and I'd leave a message and they would never have anybody call me back so basically there's absolutely no way to have your questions answered so that was kind of the end of it I didn't uh I didn't deal with them anymore the albuterix um there's a lot of information on it online it's easy to get your questions answered the guy who writes that uh stopping kidney disease food guide is somehow involved with the albutrix so if you're taking the albutrix he'll actually you can actually go online and set up an appointment and he'll call you and talk to you and answer all of your questions for you um so that was the reason why I stuck with that and I'm still taking it um I almost wonder sometimes and I'm I've got a subscription to this too where they send me every month I get one bottle of albuterix and one bottle of this micro tricks but somehow I've got like a an excess of it building up and I think that that was from the first 90 days because what I was doing is I was taking one and a half pills pills with each meal so this here was the bottle has enough in it for two tablets for each meal which is 10 milligram or 10 10 milligram or grams of protein per ml out of here that would be 30 a day but remember I did the low protein and I was doing uh 22 and a half grams of protein from this 22 and a half from food so that is everything I did you might have to watch this video a couple of times to to uh kinda make your own notes and everything but remember the things you can start doing today you can start drinking at least a half ounce of water per pound of body weight you can start eating I mean drop all meat and dairy and start eating vegetables start to go on plant-based don't think that because you found the plant-based section at Walmart you can eat any of it you you want to you can't because we are concerned about protein and also go to the gym and get on the elliptical trainer that's all I do I'm going to tell you something there's some of you who are sitting there thinking well I don't need to go to the gym I have exercise equipment at home I'll just use that that never works out you know what that's been used for right now you're hanging clothes on it you need to get out of the house and make part of your daily routine part of your new lifestyle going to the gym and getting on the elliptical trainer I think my gym is only like nine dollars a month or something like that so those are the three things you can do right now and those are going to make a difference in your GFR um and also calculate your target weight the weight that you want to be whether it's losing weight or gaining weight if you're really really skinny because you've been having kidney issues for a while you're going to want to put on a few pounds if you're overweight I mean calculate go online and see what the the weight for your like age and height should be and make that your target weight start eating like you're that weight already um and then go on Amazon order the stopping kidney disease food guide it has a lot of other information in it too really useful information and it has some forms in it that you can photocopy and fill out every day to track your protein and calories and all that kind of stuff and it's very important to do that track it when you stop tracking it that's when you're going to start slumping back um and then the albuterix here you can order from a website called kidneyhood.org and Lee if you're watching this even though you haven't been paying me I wouldn't mind getting some extra money for for uh telling people about your product or this one here it is less expensive keto Arena that's ketorena.com and those people probably don't even know they sell the product because they don't answer phones so anyway order that book from Amazon order your your medical food um and start exercising and keep me informed of how you're doing remember my email is Glenn jl69 gmail.com or you can comment on this video and leave uh leave your GFR and how you're doing in the comment section and I really really really am interested in what your current GFR is um what your bun is the creatine that sort of thing so please let me know that and and let me know how you're doing and I can tell you guys your doctor if they think traditionally they're probably not going to want to sign off on this I managed to get the va's renal dietitian to sign off on it but I think she just wanted to see what was going to happen and she's extremely surprised and I wouldn't be surprised if she's recommending this to other patients now just because of the results but anyway if you have any questions ask in the comment section or leave a comment on the video um hopefully starting next week I'm going to get back to the different craft videos I ordered at glowforge um back here we've got all of our equipment and everything I'm feeling good now hitting the gym every day I can actually run again um without getting out of breath and messing up my my joints and everything so thanks for watching guys I appreciate it subscribe to my channel for the new videos that are coming up I have um new Labs coming up next month that I have to do and what I've done I'm I'm being the guinea pig for you guys um the results were really really good with the 45 grams of protein per day so what I did um I went from very low protein up to low protein or what I should be eating and that's 60 grams of protein a day so or or yeah a day so I'm taking two of these tablets per meal right now so I'm eating 30 grams of protein in medical food and 30 grams in regular food and when I do these labs in November we're going to see what happens we're going to see if I'm giving my kidneys a little more protein than they can comfortably handle and if my GFR drops or if my GFR improves because I've lost weight I've gotten rid of the high blood pressure the diabetes the sleep apnea um so I can tell you if I mean I might expect a tiny tiny drop but if it's too much of a drop I'll go back to the very low protein but anyway I'll keep you guys updated on that so again thanks for watching and like And subscribe share this with anybody that you know who has kidney disease um high blood pressure diabetes any of this kind of stuff if you know any websites with comment sections please share this video there um and I will see you guys in the next video thanks a lot
