Understanding Inconsistent Pokémon in Battles

what's up guys today we're talking about inconsistent Pokemon first let's define that an inconsistent Pokemon is a Pokemon that is frequently unable to perform its role in a game note that this does not mean it doesn't perform its role but it is actually unable or very difficult for this Pokemon to do what it's supposed to do well what's the difference suppose the breaker on your team is Choice spec curm in a game where your opponent ends up sweeping your team with Dragon Dance roaring Moon did break no but it still technically could have it certainly wasn't unable how about when you're facing a stall team with a Blissey well now your is unable to break you still have a chance with lucky freezes but probably your just won't be able to perform its role of breaking this game Pokemon can be unable to perform their role in other ways too a moles may be your great tusk switch in but your opponent could be running Stone Edge for this video I'm going to be focusing on offensive inconsistency the reason for this is that defensive inconsistency is usually unacceptable and doesn't have workarounds if a defensive Pokemon frequently isn't Walling what it's supposed to wall it sucks and you shouldn't be using it obviously with Tera and weird sets a Pokemon won't be able to wall everything it's supposed to all of the time but if your defensive Pokemon is frequently failing you there's no way to team build around that offensive cons inconsistency on the other hand is a lot more workable I just told you that choice specs is inconsistent if you face a Blissey you're toast that's not the only core that makes ineffective either how about gallerian sling paired with a ground immunity and a solid ice resist that's going to make it hard to break as well does that make Choice spec curum bad absolutely not the two main categories of offensive inconsistency to focus on are inconsistent sweepers and inconsistent Breakers before I get into how to build around and use inconsistent Pokemon let me give some examples of consistent and inconsistent Pokémon let's start with Breakers some consistent Breakers would be ochre Pon Wellspring Choice band Hoopa Unbound and Flame orb or saluna none of these Pokemon can be walled long term by almost anything they won't always break but you'll never experience a matchup where you're unable to break on the other hand some inconsistent Breakers are Choice specs enamoras Choice specs and choice band weile these aren't bad Pokémon but they will struggle to break in some matchups both Choice specs and amoris and curum struggle greatly with Blissey and gallerian sling as well as other Pokemon which can safely Scout and then switch into a resist Choice band weile is unfortunately hard walled by alola even a choice band knockoff doesn't to hit and once all mola's item is gone it takes even less now let's talk about sweepers what are some consistent sweepers well well there aren't any and thank arus for that could you imagine if there was a sweeper that frequently did perform its role of sweeping Pokemon like iron moth DD roaring Moon gouging fire setup iron Valiant and double dance iron Crown are inherently inconsistent Pokemon can also be inconsistent in one way and consistent in another roaring moon is great at getting Chip on physical walls and removing Rocky helmets with knockoff it does this very consistently and very well it does not however sweep consistently similarly an iron moth may be inconsistent in sweeping but reliable at absorbing toxic spikes and dealing with iron Valiant a choice Band weile May perform its role of speed control very well but just not break reliably what we're going to be focusing on today is how to minimize the consequences of inconsistent breaking and sweeping in your team building these Pokémon iron moth CM weile they're very strong and good Pokémon worth using on your teams avoiding inconsistent Pokemon altogether isn't the answer then the question becomes how do you manage those matchups where your Pokemon can't perform one of its roles the first and easiest way is to run the Pokemon on hyper offense hyper offense usually has three to five sweepers per team and all of them are inconsistent that being said a full team of inconsistent sweepers together has a pretty solid shot of at least one of them winning furthermore the earlier sweepers can soften up the team for the later ones imagine a roaring Moon forcing massive chip on a landras allowing for a gouging fire to sweep later inconsistency is part of hyper offense and using inconsistent but High reward Pokemon is a major part of what makes it such a popular and effective archetype another solution is to create a team that forces chip damage on whatever Pokémon is preventing your breaker or sweeper from performing its role let's call this the limiting Pokémon suppose you're running a choice span wee and you know you can't break all mola but what if you had Hazard support knockoff will remove all mola's heavy duty boots if it had them and with stealth rocket spikes breaking all mola suddenly becomes possible it's not quite enough though so maybe you add a future sight gallerian slow King to your team as well with Hazard chip and future sight Alla mola is dying for sure there are other ways of forcing chip that aren't hazards or future sight though suppose you're building a team with a choice band reloom as your primary breaker but you're struggling with corvite and Skarmory you could always add something like a Swords Dance gly score to help you break SD gly score almost always forces in corvite and Skarmory and in a drawn out game it can even PP stall these threats out of roosts especially with relab boom's assistance this solution is particularly effective with sweepers especially sweepers like gouging fire where you choose what you lose to let's say you're using a Terra pois and gouging fire with breaking swipe this set is great against gcore but loses to zamazenta so you could pair it with the King Gambit which reliably forces it in and chips it the third way to minimize inconsistency is to ensure your team has very good switchins to Pokemon that make your team unable to perform its role those limiting Pokémon for example if you're running a choice specs and amoris and you know you can't break past to gallerian sling you could pair it with a protect Heatran this will ensure you end up if you end up clicking moonblast into sling you can get Heatran in safely set stealth rocks perhaps maybe fish for burns with lava plume and if future site is used you can safely protect on the turn it hits before I go over more ways to minimize inconsistency please remember to subscribe like and leave a comment if you're enjoying the video the fourth way to minimize inconsistency is to consider the play style of the Pokemon that makes your Pokemon unable to perform its role make a team that counters and threat threatens that play style so that even if one of your Pokemon is less effective against the opponent you'll still have a good matchup overall let's go back to the choice spec curum example it can break almost anything but it can't break Blissey so what do you do against a stall team well you acknowledge that kierum can't break and focus on other anti-stall measures this could be just another breaker like ogron Wellspring it could mean Hazard stack paired with strong knockoff users it could mean offensive Pokemon with t there are a lot of ways to beat stall and how often are you going to see Blissey outside of a stall team not very often another known inconsistent Pokemon is sinistra which struggles greatly against roaring Moon so you can make sure your team has a good match up into hyper offense and Sun if you're using sinista since you almost never see roaring Moon outside those two play Styles this solution won't work for everything though if the limiting Pokemon is something like King Gambit or zamazenta it could be on almost any place style and you'll have to utilize the previous two solutions before we continue I want to clarify that these Solutions are not independent of one another they should be used together to minimize inconsistency forcing chip on limiting Pokemon having good switchings to counters and considering common play styles of limiting Pokemon should all be used on your team to limit inconsistency if possible now let's go over some warnings there are other methods to minimize inconsistency that I haven't mentioned and they suck the main one I want to address is lures this is when you try to bait the limiting Pokemon with some strange set or Tech usually crippling it severely or one-shotting it to illustrate this point let's look at that choice specs curum example you can't break break Blissey so here's an idea what if you ran a choice specs dark eye with Focus punch alongside your Cura that would deal enough damage with Choice specs Dark Pulse to eventually lull your opponent to is switching blissy in every time and then bam Focus punch this is an example of a bad lure might it be to stal team once or twice sure but there's so much that can go wrong first of all Focus punch only does 53 to 63% to Blissey assuming it hasn't used Tera that leaves Blissey healthy enough to heal and now your surprise factor is gone secondly what if your opponent decides that Claire is the better switch in for that one turn because they fear getting tricked weird choice item and most importantly of all Focus punch is going to straight up suck in 90% of games Focus blast is a much stronger and better alternative than Focus punch and it's better at hitting anything other than Blissey another example of a bad lure is slapping Terra Blast on random Pokemon you might say oh my team is weak to ogre Pon Wellspring no problem let me slap Terra Blast poison on my Prim Arena not only will this leave you with a ter blast you'll barely use but it might not even work when you actually face the threat it's supposed to answer what if that ogre Pon Wellspring predicts your primarina to switch a very reasonable thing to do since primarina is usually going to die to a grass move and goes for an ivy cudle instead now your primarina dies and you've lost your Tera for nothing cheesy lures like this are inconsistent and almost always bad yes they will work sometimes but that doesn't make it a good idea you should almost never use a lure I'm not saying you should never use creative sets or texts but just that these creative sets or texts should be widely applicable and good in many situations not just designed for one or two threats my last warning is that sometimes a Pokemon is just too inconsistent to be worth using yes you could incorporate solid switchins to its checks try to force chip on its counters and consider the play style that the limiting Pokemon often find themselves on but is it worth it sometimes the answer is just no some Pokemon are too inconsistent to be worth using and it's not worth supporting them so heavily just for them to frequently fail anyway if you notice that the inconsistency seems insurmountable and the limiting Pokemon are very common threats in the tier it may be time to try a different Pokemon or set a great example of this is Choice specs CIO so many common Pokemon in the tier resist both of its stab moves and it can almost never function as a breaker no matter how much support you give it it's just not worth using I hope you guys enjoyed the video and good luck with building inconsistent Pokemon
