hello everyone and welcome back to clinical cousins youtube channel where today we're going to go over the drug propylthiouracil also known as ptu i remember it as propyl thyrocell this drug is classified as an anti-thyroid agent and is given for conditions that cause hyperthyroidism like graves disease remember hyperthyroidism will send you to the grave it cannot be given to those who are at high risk for acute liver injury and liver failure because this drug is potentially hepatotoxic in pregnant women this drug has a category of d for discontinue if possible what we need to know is that this drug will bind to and inhibit the oxidation of iodine in the thyroid gland if iodine cannot be used properly then the thyroid cannot produce the hormones t3 and t4 this drug has a half-life of around 24 hours we should know that the side effects of this drug may include bone marrow suppression hepatitis fever and goiter some commonly tested material about this drug is that this drug is given to decrease the synthesis of thyroid hormones t4 and t3 and lastly it may cause severe liver damage as always thank you for taking the time to learn with us and remember to like and subscribe for more content
