The long tension between Iran and Israel finally broke out into open war. Missiles were launched at each other, major cities were hit and hundreds of lives were lost. Israel's ally, the United States, also contributed to the escalation of the conflict. The US also attacked Tehran's nuclear sites, which was eventually retaliated by an attack on a US military base in Qatar. To understand how this escalation developed from the initial attack to US involvement. Watch the full summary in the following video. [Music] This open war began on Friday, June 13, 2025 when Israel launched a massive airstrike on Iran. A total of 330 munitions were dropped on about 100 targets in six cities including the capital Tehran and the important nuclear site in Natans. The attack claimed the lives of more than 20 senior Iranian commanders including the chief of staff of the armed forces and a top figure in Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Mosat agents also launched sabotage missions against Iran's air defense systems. Israel continues its attacks on Iran's military airports in Tabris and the city of Sucihk. Iran's UN envoy reported 78 people killed and more than 320 injured, most of them civilians. Iran responded by launching around 100 drones into Israeli territory triggering explosions in the skies over Tel Afif. A number of projectiles also crossed Jordanian territory and were intercepted by the local military. In the evening, Israel said fewer than 100 missiles were launched at Tel Afif and said most were intercepted or failed to reach their targets. The attacks continued on Saturday, June 14, 2025 with Israel reporting three dead and 50 injured in several cities. Some 1 million Israelis were forced to hide in shelters as sirens warning of attacks echoed in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Nearly 200 people were injured and two people were killed in an Iranian attack on a building in Batam south of Tel Aviv. Four civilians were also killed in the mostly Palestinian town of Tamra . In Iran, two projectiles reportedly hit Tehran's Mehrabat airport, hitting a 14-story apartment building, killing 60 people. In the evening, Israel attacked the Iranian Defense Ministry headquarters in Tehran and reportedly caused a major fire at the Sahran oil depot. The conflict continued until Sunday, June 15, 2025. Explosions again rocked Tel Aviv and Haifa in the second wave of Iranian attacks. A Yemeni militant group claims to have fired missiles at the Israeli city of Java, signaling Iran's allies are getting directly involved. Meanwhile, Israel expanded its targets to various targets in Iran. including oil refineries and government buildings. Nuclear talks between Iran and the US that were supposed to take place that day were unilaterally cancelled by Tehran. Entering the fourth day, Monday, June 16, 2025, Iran again attacked Tel Afif and Haifa with missiles at dawn. At least 8 people were killed and more than 100 injured. Homes and the US embassy building were also damaged. Iran claims to have used a new method in the attack . However, Israel said only seven of the 100 missiles hit their targets. Israel also said it had destroyed a third of Iran's missile launchers and captured dozens of spies inside the country. The next day, Tuesday, June 17, 2025, Israel announced that it had killed Iran's Chief of War Staff, Ali Sanmani. Iran retaliated by attacking Israel's Military Intelligence Directorate and one of MOSU's operations centers. Around 30 missiles were launched from Iran towards various areas in Israel. Then on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, Israel attacked missile production facilities in Khojir and various military sites, including Imam Hussein University. The attack sparked an exodus of residents from Tehran. Iran launched two waves of retaliatory attacks with explosions heard as far away as Tel Aviv. Then on Thursday, June 19, 2025, Israel attacked dozens of locations including the Natans nuclear site and the Hondap heavy water nuclear reactor. Meanwhile, one of Iran's missiles hit the Soroka hospital in Biir Shiba, Israel, injuring dozens of people. Prime Minister Benjamin Tanyahu said Tehran would pay a heavy price. Lumberg also reported that the US is preparing to launch an attack on Iran in the near future. On Friday, June 20, 2025, the Israeli military claimed to have killed a squad of Iranian soldiers including the Commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Kats instructed the military to attack symbols of the Iranian regime's power in Tehran. Meanwhile, Iran continues its retaliatory attacks and tensions in the region are escalating. As of Saturday, June 21, 2025, Israel announced that it had killed three senior IRGC commanders. Two of them are suspected of being involved in arms smuggling to Hamas. A teenager was also killed in the attack in the town of Sociikom. That evening, the conflict escalated when US President Donald Trump announced that his forces had directly attacked three key Iranian nuclear sites. US Defense Secretary Speed Higgate on Sunday, June 22, 2025, explained that the airstrikes on the Fordo, Nathans, and Iswahan nuclear sites were aimed at eliminating Iran's nuclear capabilities, not toppling its government. Iran strongly condemned the move and called it a violation of the frontier. The Iranian government has begun seeking international support, including through meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin. On the ground, Israel continues its airstrikes. Then on Monday, June 23, 2025, Iran decided to retaliate against the US by firing 14 ballistic missiles towards the US Al-Uudit airbase in Qatar. There were no fatalities as all the vehicles were successfully intercepted. Tram called the attack very weak and said it was time for both sides to pursue peace. That is a summary of the open war that previously only involved Iran and Israel until it finally dragged the US into it militarily. US involvement and Iran's retaliatory actions hitting foreign bases prove this conflict is no longer limited to the region. Despite signs of progress towards peace, the situation remains fragile and wider conflict may resume. Keep following the developments only on YouTube Kompas.com. [ Music]
