  • These symptoms must include either:
    • Depressed mood
    • Loss of interest or pleasure (Anhedonia)

Symptoms (SIG E CAPS)

  1. S - Sleep Disturbances
  2. I - Interest Diminished (Anhedonia)
  3. G - Guilt and/or Feelings of Worthlessness
  4. E - Energy Decreased (Fatigue)
  5. C - Concentration Problems
  6. A - Appetite or Weight Changes
    • Significant weight loss without dieting
    • Weight gain
  7. P - Psychomotor Agitation or Retardation
    • Slowing down of thoughts and movements
    • Must be noticeable by others, not just subjective
  8. S - Suicidal Thoughts

Diagnostic Criteria

  • Symptoms must significantly affect everyday functioning.
  • They must not be caused by substance abuse or medication.

Notes

  • Remember, the presence of either depressed mood or anhedonia is crucial for diagnosis.
  • Look for significant changes in behavior that are observable by others, as with psychomotor changes.
