Notes on Inflorescence

Introduction to Inflorescence

  • Flowers come in various shapes and types.
  • Unique arrangements of flower clusters are called inflorescence.

Definition of Inflorescence

  • Inflorescence refers to a cluster of flowers on a stem.
  • They can be likened to the structure of pinnately compound leaves for better understanding, but they are not directly comparable.

Structure of Inflorescence

  • Flowers can be arranged:
    • Along the stem
    • At the apex
  • Both arrangements can be classified as inflorescence.

Types of Inflorescence

  1. Racemos Inflorescence

    • Flowers arranged laterally along a central axis.
    • The apex (terminal point) does not bear a flower, allowing indefinite growth.
    • Older flowers are located near the base, while newer flowers develop towards the apex.
    • Known as indefinite inflorescence due to continuous growth.
  2. Sciamos Inflorescence

    • Opposite of racemos.
    • Flowers develop at the apex, stopping indefinite growth of the shoot.
    • Older flowers occupy the apex; newer flowers grow from the secondary branches formed.
    • This arrangement has older flowers at the apex and newer flowers at the base.
    • Known as definite inflorescence.

Summary

  • Inflorescence can be categorized into racemos (indefinite) and sciamos (definite).
  • Understanding these patterns aids in the study of plant structures and behaviors.
