i'll be showing you how to use the shore d polymer hardness tester calipers and micrometer note that i have my lab book in front of me this is where i write down my raw data before putting it into a spreadsheet sure is the manufacturer d is the scale there's others like a short a would be used for softer polymers so here's our tester you'll notice it has an indenter down here so we place it on the polymer and press down you should do this with a partner so that they can get the reading off the scale then release right have your partner tell you what the measurement was so you can write it down and press again release and same thing write it down once more and release this next section we're going to be working with calipers so when you start put the jaws of the calipers gently together and zero it out this one's already zeroed i'm gonna measure the dimensions of this cavity so i'm gonna take the outer diameter using this side of the see if you calipers see it i'll take the same measurement at a different location in case there's any irregularity now we're going to measure the inner diameter of this cavity using this end of the calipers when measuring make sure not to use any part beyond the measurement surface or else your measurements will not be accurate also make sure to record your units and to be consistent with your units during the measuring process so also note there's a little indent on this post i'm avoiding the indent when i'm measuring the last thing we're going to do is measure the depth of the cavity simply place the edge of the calipers on the edge of the cavity and gently lower the depth gauge by opening the jaws your measurement should read out on the screen make sure you turn your calipers off when you're done or the battery will die next i'll be showing you a micrometer when you store a micrometer always make sure that there is a little space between the jaws if you don't the micrometer can jam so the first thing we're going to do is gently close the jaws and then zero it out you also want to make sure that your micrometer is in inches because we've been using inches for all our other measurements that button's here we'll start with the larger diameter wire and it would be good to have a lab partner help you with this bit let me close this gently so it's just gripping the wire for measurement 0.0217 measure the wire three times in slightly different locations and make sure to record in your notebook the reference letter that's written on the wire the second wire of smaller diameter really wants to jump out of the jaws careful there we go before you put the micrometer back in its case make sure the jaws are slightly apart
