OCT 720: Week 4: Ergonomics Part II

hi so um um after the uh introduction of ergonomics and MSD I want to talk about um ergonomic assessments um again we want to look at the whole person so a typical ergonomic uh assessments includes um um first of all you want to inter interview the employer or the contractor or the services to get a description of the job for the U workers okay and then you want to um interview U the client or the worker him or herself to build uh the occupational profile to understand the history of um the work and U what is the you know for example what is the typical day of the of your U work and uh what cause uh the symptoms the most and how frequent do you have those and those kind of questions that you want to build up on the profile and then you can decide okay do I need a measure range your motion May a muscle test a sensation or other things that related to your problem okay and the materials uh you may need uh may include not limited um the tape measure a camera um a gometer ruler uh um a checklist a template uh and you know maybe you just need to do some education stuff that you may have some kind of pimpl um ready for you to use so um so that's before that's uh that's when um um when we get a a referral so we have this u u plan in mind and then um when we do the onsite assessments so and uh I'm using this um po model to to guide uh the the presentation so here uh when on site we want to know uh we want to observe this person doing the job and be careful though uh because uh the person is aware of us um observing um their job you know people tend to perform you know the best of them so um they may not show the real posture of they doing their work like typical work so uh when I did it uh for the for at least the first 10 to 15 minutes of my observation uh well they tend to fake or they tend to show the best ofs so the information for that uh 15 minutes may not be accurate but they you know eventually they will show okay so typically I would just stay there for about 30 minutes to an hour to really see uh what they really uh perform okay so um uh we would observe they doing U they do their um actual work and then we want to understand the responsibility and you know uh the roles and what's the typical day and what's the worst day of their their their job and then you want to understand the environment uh for that job so you want to see the workstation set up and how uh where they put the tools or you know if it's in the office how they lay uh their um um uh work related items you know within their uh workstation um and then you want to pay attention to the lightning The Temper the room temperature uh the noise level and the work environment like the the X um is it friendly or it's really competitive work environment that would affect this person's performance right and then you want to relate the O and the e to the P so uh we want to do some uh anthropometric measurement to see oh if if the chair or the height of the desk or the layout is not appropriate for this person that would put more stress on the shoulder or the back or or whatever um uh body segment involved and you want to relate to uh the symptoms that this person may have and of course um you may need to pay attention to the psychosocial issues like uh if this person um have some kind of depression or anxiety going on and that can affect the work performance and then your intervention should be different okay so that's a basic onite uh assessments for ergonomics so uh what is uh anthropometric measurement well basically it's really um similar to uh um you know you just measure um this person's um um body length and and and then related to uh the tools what related to the environment for this person um again um it's kind of similar to uh what you measure for the wheelchair but different you know um so the height of the person uh the P teal uh to the but to the button and then the knee height and then um the elbow height the eye level you know the Torso um do does this person have a a posterior teal anterior teal um something like that so um and then once we got this information you can apply it to uh to for this person to choose a prop uh you know you can we can help this person to choose a proper um tools for their job U requirement okay so once we got all this information let me come back to here so once we got information of the all the p and the E we want to consider you know the overlap of the three so this is the part that we want to provide our recommendation okay so remember this is not the same as a regular um um chart that U that we do in the hospital setting or um you know a clinical setting and of course you have to learn anything yet so the goal here is you know who's who's going to read the report let me put it this way who's going to read the report the employer right so you want to convince the employer that making these changes can help their worker to perform better but uh most importantly they care more about uh what the work performance right cost effective issues so um when we write a goal uh our client is both the employer and the worker okay so uh the uh our goal should be specific uh it can it should be me measurable achievable and realistic okay so that means you don't say okay uh with this change the client will uh perform that 50% of the time during the work hours that sounds reasonable but if you think again why would the would a employer pay um the full salary for a person who can only do half of their job right so in that sense your report may not you not be accepted just because the the way you write the go so you want to be careful of uh the language that we that you use so don't worry about that right now because um you will get the training you know throughout the whole OT curriculum so don't worry about that so that's the um ergonomic uh assessment ments
