Guide to Creating Documents in InDesign

Create New Documents in InDesign CC 2015 and Earlier

Introduction

  • Adobe has introduced equitable language changes in InDesign from version 2022.
  • New document creation options and presets are available from the 2017 release.

Creating a New Document

  1. Access New Document Dialog:
    • Go to File > New > Document.
    • The dialog combines Document Setup and Margins And Columns settings.
    • Settings can be changed anytime.
  2. Specify Document Setup Options:
    • Adjust dimensions for bleed and slug areas using the Arrow button.
    • Utilize the "Make All Settings The Same" icon for uniform bleed/slug extension.
  3. Preview Option:
    • Available only in InDesign; allows a preview of document setup.
  4. Finalize Setup:
    • Click OK to open the new document.

Setting Default Layout

  • Use File > Document Setup or Layout > Margins And Columns for default settings when no documents are open.

New Document Options

  • Document Preset: Select a previously saved preset.
  • Intent: Options for PDF, SWF, and digital publishing.
  • Number of Pages: Specify the initial number of pages.
  • Start Page Number: Determine the starting page number; affects two-page spread layouts.
  • Facing Pages: For left-right page spread layouts; affects book and magazine designs.
  • Primary Text Frame: Offers a text frame that matches margin and column settings.
  • Page Size and Orientation: Choose dimensions and orientation (Portrait or Landscape).
  • Bleed and Slug:
    • Bleed allows for printing objects beyond the page edge.
    • Slug area for printing information, discarded post-trim.
  • Preview: Allows viewing document setup in InDesign.

Document Window Overview

  • Each page/spread has its own pasteboard and guides visible in Normal View.
  • Guides:
    • A. Spread (black lines)
    • B. Page (black lines)
    • C. Margin guides (magenta)
    • D. Column guides (violet)
    • E. Bleed area (red)
    • F. Slug area (blue)

Creating Custom Page Sizes

  1. Start New Document Setup:
    • Go to File > New > Document.
    • Choose Custom Page Size.
    • Define name and settings, then click Add.

Defining Document Presets

  1. Access Document Presets:
    • Go to File > Document Presets > Define.
  2. Create New Preset:
    • Click New, name the preset, select layout options, click OK.
  3. Saving and Sharing:
    • Save presets to files for distribution.

Creating Document Using Preset

  1. Choose Preset:
    • File > Document Preset > [name] or through the New Document dialog.
  2. Modify if Needed:
    • Adjust options in the New Document dialog.
