Sep 17, 2024
Notes on "Holes" by Lewis Sacker - Part 1, Chapter 1
Setting: Camp Greenlake
No Actual Lake
: Once the largest lake in Texas, now a dry, flat wasteland.
Former Town
: The town of Greenlake dried up along with the lake.
Climate
: Summer temperatures reach around 95°F in the shade.
Shade
: Limited shade is provided by two old oak trees.
A hammock is stretched between these trees.
A log cabin is located nearby.
Both the shade and hammock are owned by the warden.
Camp Conditions
Warden's Rules
: Campers are forbidden to use the hammock.
Wildlife
Rattlesnakes and Scorpions
:
They find shade under rocks and in the campers' holes.
General rule: If left alone, they usually won’t bother you.
Being bitten is not lethal and may allow a break from digging holes.
Yellow-Spotted Lizard
:
Extremely dangerous and deadly.
A bite results in a slow and painful death.
If bitten, there is no remedy; might as well rest in the hammock as there is nothing more to lose.
