Notes on "Holes" by Lewis Sacker - Part 1, Chapter 1

Setting: Camp Greenlake

  • No Actual Lake: Once the largest lake in Texas, now a dry, flat wasteland.
  • Former Town: The town of Greenlake dried up along with the lake.
  • Climate: Summer temperatures reach around 95°F in the shade.
  • Shade: Limited shade is provided by two old oak trees.
    • A hammock is stretched between these trees.
    • A log cabin is located nearby.
    • Both the shade and hammock are owned by the warden.

Camp Conditions

  • Warden's Rules: Campers are forbidden to use the hammock.

Wildlife

  • Rattlesnakes and Scorpions:
    • They find shade under rocks and in the campers' holes.
    • General rule: If left alone, they usually won’t bother you.
    • Being bitten is not lethal and may allow a break from digging holes.
  • Yellow-Spotted Lizard:
    • Extremely dangerous and deadly.
    • A bite results in a slow and painful death.
    • If bitten, there is no remedy; might as well rest in the hammock as there is nothing more to lose.
