Introduction

Input Devices

  • Function: Send data to the computer.

1. Keyboard

  • Consists of keys for text input and software interaction.
  • Connection methods: Wired or wireless.
  • Laptops have built-in keyboards.
  • Shortcuts: Key combinations for commands (e.g., Ctrl + Z for Undo).

2. Pointing Devices

  • Mouse:
    • Uses an optical sensor for movement recognition.
    • Sensitivity affected by the surface (mouse pad recommended).
  • Tracker Ball:
    • Rolled to move the pointer.
    • No buttons.
  • Trackpad:
    • Found on laptops.
    • Senses finger movements, presses, and touches.
  • Joystick:
    • Found on game controllers.
    • Used for moving sprites in games.

3. Graphics Tablet

  • Used with a stylus.
  • Popular among digital artists and designers for drawing and writing.

4. Scanner

  • Uses light sensors to digitize physical documents.
  • OCR (Optical Character Recognition): Reads characters and stores as text.
  • OMR (Optical Mark Recognition): Detects marks on documents (e.g., multiple choice questions).

5. Barcode Scanner

  • Barcode: Pattern of lines and gaps for tracking parcels.
  • Types:
    • Linear Codes: Common in supermarkets.
    • Matrix Codes (QR Codes):
      • Can store more information.

6. Webcam

  • Specialized camera often with inbuilt microphone.
  • Uses: Security and streaming images/videos online.

7. Microphone

  • Captures sound using a diaphragm.
  • Converts analog signals to digital via sound card.
