calm waters of central lake he could hear the happy cries of the other numbers one through nine as they played in the battle zero didn't play adam up because he had nothing to add he felt he had no place among the other digits why do you think he had nothing to add to adam what is that i think they're kind of relating that to you she said oh four plus zero is four so he really has no value in that camera and it's always the same answer like wonders zero lives in digitaria a curious country ruled by king multiples and queen adeline their positive outlooks helped the kingdom prosper count infinity the king's trusted advisor was the one who shaped all the numbers when old digits retire people replace them with shiny new numerals thumbs up you've heard of roman numerals right every number knew its place a 7 was the number of days in a week and a 5 was the number of points on a star a 2 was handy for pounding the wheels on a bicycle the ones were important because count infinity added them together to make the other numbers questions after okay questions and comments try and remember every number had a place except zero how infinity had been experimenting when he formed the strange new digit but zero meant nothing and no one was sure what his job would be king multiples declared that no more zeros would be made until they found a purpose for this one zero zero was alone nowadays no one mentioned zero much the few times someone tried to count with him they always ended up with nothing i need to find my place zero thought he decided to go back to visit the wise old count infinity and ask his advice what does it mean the few times they tried to count up with him tried to come up with them that nothing happened yeah it didn't change the number right if we were doing addition how infinity made incredible things he made knickknacks whatsits and thingamajigs the most impressive thing he ever made was an enormous machine the numberator kinda sounds enumerated that says number eater the numerator had a vacuum tube on one side and a large curved spout on the other when count infinity placed digits under the tube they were sucked up with the great clankling and whirling until finally they emerged from the spout with a tiny new number count infinity could put in two ones to make a bouncy baby too or three ones to make a roly-poly little three so if he says he puts in two ones to get a 2 what problem would that be right i told you this part will all be reviewed you but the other thing's a little trickier as xero stood shyly in the doorway count infinity looked up and noticed him i am zero infinity exclaimed you're just in time to help me figure out a better way to make one what do you mean zero asked well most numbers are easy to make i simply pop a handful of ones into my trusty numerator making a one though that's trickier to make a one count finity explained i spent hours hand correcting it from a special material called integram why don't you just stick one one into the numerator zero s count infinity side i've tried that but the numerator adds you have to put in at least two numbers no two numbers that i can think of add up to okay before i move on what's the number they're going to add to 1. [Music] count infinity odds 0 in a strange way could you put this 1 into the numerator for me the count asks just help the one stand right under the vacuum tube if he's tricking him as zero did he was sucked up into the numerator along with the one zero barely had time to realize what was happening before he was out the other side sitting next to him were the old one and a shiny new one wonderful count tinnity cry we have discovered your additive identity i bet my binomials that if we add you to any number we will always come up with the same number you can help replenish the supply of digits and digitaria i think zero's feeling better now about himself or herself zero thanked the cow and slowly walked home he was happy to have a job but somehow he wasn't satisfied once could make digits too he wanted to do something no one else could do i still feel that i haven't really found my place he said to himself as zero walked he had an idea i wonder what would happen if i were multiplied with another number what do you guys think if we multiply any number times zero we get zero everyone knew that multiplication was a powerful thing and only the king could use it often the product of the multiplied numbers would be too large for anyone to understand zero swallowed hard at the boldness of this idea then he stood up as straight as around as it can i've lost the king he decided and set off for the castle at the gates of the castle zero was stopped by two sharp looking sevens what kind of number are you one guard ass you look like a nine someone squished both guards begin to laugh anika is the king about multiplication said zero the guards stopped laughing they looked at each other well said one you better go right in zero entered the castle he saw king multiplis and queen adeline on their thrones crowds of numbers filled the hall waiting to address them the five standing next to zero asked why he was there i'm asking the king to multiply me zero ass the five gasped everyone do a gasp for me other numbers who heard you get to whisper absolute nine cents you get it absolute nine cents instead of nonsense it's too much but they sell the two soon a loud buzz rippled through the hall what is the meaning of this king multiple displeased by the growing confusion it's zero queen annalee told him as something about multiplication multiplication the king explained that is serious business let him come forward and explain himself the room was silent i would like to be multiplied zero told the king i thought it might help me find my place on purpose yes the king said i have wondered myself what would happen he ordered the guards to fetch his multitude now we're talking about world's location here the tube was made of solid integrity we need to find someone who is willing to be multiplied with zero the king said no one moves finally a young one that's bored i'll do it the one said bravely together zero on the one jumped into the factor end of the tube all that could be heard was the clankling and whirring of the tube what number do you think is going to come out if one and zero went into the multiplier suddenly zero and the one shot out of the other end of the tube as zero looked around he saw beside him a small round figure who looked strangely familiar five alive exclaimed the king it's another zero the other numbers were speechless why we must try this again and declare the flavor guest to king this time we will multiply zero with the sabbath he called for one of his seven guards the guard's knee shook as he stepped forward the same thing happened with zero and seven the king laughed and said well zero you have your answer no matter what number we multiply you with we get zero this was big news the other numbers chattered excitedly but zero said now there are more zeros with no real place the one padded zero on the back zero was glad to have a friend at a time like this so now he says okay but now there's a bunch of zeros and i still don't really know what our purpose is right i want to make new numbers that no one has ever seen before zero says sir what number do you get if you add one to nine it was one of those questions that no one ever asked the king cops as everyone knows anything bigger than nine is many he said so he says any number bigger than 9 we're just going to call it 9. we don't think about 1 plus 9 because there is no digit for a number that big zero looked at the one standing next to him he rubs his eyes together he and the one looked like this it has the number 10. they don't know about 10. well it has to be it says they look like this and it kind of shows the picture but it doesn't say tender sorry cry look at us we can make a new number to represent what you get when you add one tonight the king scratched his chin zero asked nine wants to stand together sir if we added one more to this group we could use a zero to show that all those wants have moved over to the next place when i stand in this place next to my friend one as a zero i can represent zero ones but he now represents nine plus one i like your thinking zero the king said but he whispered i can't call the new number nine plus one quick think of a new name who would you i say the new name should be zero whisper back this new number will attend to a lot of business could we call it attend the king couldn't hear zero very well so in a loud voice he said i proclaim that this new number will be called a tenth the numbers all loved it hurray for 10 hurray pretend they cheered the numbers crowded around zero and asked if they could stand inside it zero gave each digit a turn and soon they were making wonderful new numbers like 20 30 60 and 90. so if the 3 becomes a 30 what changed there what's changing that we kind of talked about nick uh well it's like wait the three becomes a 30 oh where did the three go in the number three um came um in front of the zero and so instead of a number and then there can be a lot of people that can make four did your number three digit numbers you're right numbers back to 30 though really quick if the 3 now becomes a 30 the 3 goes from the ones place and now it's in the tent's place so it's changing place value right the numbers all loved it hooray for ten oh we read this before long they were standing next to each other in different combinations to make all kinds of new numbers numbers like 32 47 89 and so on and on big numbers didn't seem quite so scary anymore when the excitement calmed down zero thought someone changed his arm what about me asked a small boy what do you think it might be another one that's a good guess we'll see is it my turn to stand next to you the new little one the new little zero ass i'm sorry zero said two zeros standing next to each other still equal nothing the little zero looks so sad that the brave one and zero each put an arm around her you guys see that suddenly zero had thought look sir he called to the key what do we look like 100 so they went from a one and then they added one more zero the new number would be one two one and then if we had one more zero onto one and then ten and then we go to one hundred then we go to one thousand so what's changing here starts with t place value right the king said slowly why you look like a new number bigger than any i've ever seen bigger even than the new number 90. zero said probably we can represent what you get when you have ten tens splendid explain the king what's ten tens one soon all the other digits were clamoring to stand next to the two zeros because if they stand to the new zeros their individual numbers can have a lot more value because they might go to the tenths place to the hundredths place in the middle of the excitement zero notice how infinity be beating at him well zero the count smiled did you find what you were looking for zero knotted i just wanted to mean more than nothing he said and now i think i finally found my place from then on zero played adam up as happily as everyone out so i'm going to show these last two characters so why do you think now he was okay playing adam up i mean he still has no value when
