What is a Discussion Text?

  • A text that shows a problematic discussion from various perspectives.
  • Provides pro and con opinions about an issue.
  • Purpose: To present various opinions, both agreeing and disagreeing.

Generic Structure of Discussion Text

  1. Issue: States the topic or problem to be discussed.
  2. Pro Argument: Provides points that support the issue being discussed.
  3. Cons Argument: Provides points that oppose the issue.
  4. Conclusion: States the author's recommendation about the discussion topic.

Example of Discussion Text Implementation

  • Issue: The impact of watching television on life.
    • Paragraph 1 and 2: Issue part
    • Paragraph 3: Cons argument (negative effects of TV)
    • Paragraph 4: Pro argument (positive effects of TV)
    • Paragraph 5: Conclusion

Features of Discussion Text

  • Uses Present Simple: example: watch, say, become.
  • Uses Modal: must, should, would, may, can.
  • Uses Connections: however, furthermore, on the other hand, but.
  • Uses Thinking Verbs: feel, hope, believe.
