Spinning Techniques Practice

Overview

  • Focus on developing two key strengths for spinners: turn and consistency in pitching.
  • Discuss 10 drills to aid in these skills (6 for both finger and wrist spin, 2 specifically for each type).

Drill 1: Standing Wrist Work

  • Objective: Ensure the ball comes out of the hand with good revolutions.
  • Finger Spin: Throw ball upwards, fingers over top, spin across.
  • Wrist Spin: Focus on fingers and wrist together, toss ball up, bounce back.
  • Key Point: Both drills focus on the top half of the body and ball release.

Drill 2: Half Pitch Under-Arm Throws

  • Objective: Comfort with hand movement and surface reaction.
  • Finger Spin: Throw underarm, hand forward, spin towards off stump.
  • Wrist Spin: Turn ball the other way, aiming past off stump.
  • Key Point: Observation of revolutions and surface reaction.

Drill 3: Action Without Step

  • Objective: Isolate the top body movement.
  • Steps: Set position, bowl without foot movement, focus on upper body action.
  • Progression: Add follow-through focusing on 180 degrees from start point.

Drill 4: Back Foot and Front Foot Balance

  • Objective: Improve balance and time in the action.
  • Back Foot: Step onto raised surface, complete action.
  • Front Foot: Start with front foot on raised surface, land and complete stride.

Drill 5: Bound and Bowl

  • Objective: Consistency and strength before gather.
  • Steps: Lean forward in bound position, jump forward, complete action.
  • Key Point: For finger spin, stride is shorter; wrist spin, stride is wider.

Drill 6: Adding Resistance Bands

  • Objective: Stronger positions and correct lines.
  • Finger Spin: Pull band forward for wrist over ball motion.
  • Wrist Spin: Pull band backward for more revs and strong wrist motion.

Drill 7: Finger Spin Focus

  • Objective: Achieve a shorter stride for more height and control.
  • Setup: Cones to mark normal stride, shorten stride, avoid cones during follow-through.

Drill 8: Wrist Spin Focus

  • Objective: Longer stride for more time in the crease.
  • Steps: Visualize arm length with a cone in hand, enable longer stride and more revs.

Drill 9: Finger Spin Continuation

  • Objective: Strengthen fingers and wrist work through ball release.
  • Steps: Three-quarter pitch length, ensure pinky towards the body, focus on revolutions.

Drill 10: Wrist Spin Angle

  • Objective: Correct arm angle and momentum.
  • Steps: Step into crease, pause at shoulder height, ensure open body side, generate momentum, complete action.
