how the Coliseum did more than entertain Emperor vesan ruled Rome from 69 to 79 CE prior to fian's rule Rome was under the tyranical rule of the previous Emperor Nero Nero however would end up committing suicide at the end of his Reign when he was con considered a public or when he was declared a Public Enemy by the Senate after Nero commits suicide it would spark the infamous Roman civil war known as the year of the four Emperors in 69 CE the Emperors involved in the Civil War were galba oo fillius and vesian a quick overview of the Civil War was galba became emperor after Nero committed suicide however galba did not really do anything special for Rome henceforth Rome was very disappointed in galba resulting and oo becoming the next Emperor after Oppo assassinated galba oo however would not have better luck than galba because oo would end up losing devaus at the Battle of bedom resulting in oo not being Emperor anymore and he would end up committing suicide resulting in velus being the new emperor of Rome however his Reign won't last long and the spaan would soon be the new emperor of Rome besan became the emperor of Rome at a very distressing time Rome was being destroyed because of the past Emperors were not able to fix the Roman society because instead it just kept on being destroyed so in a final hope vpan figured that he would start to rebuild the Roman society hence for why the construction of Kum first started under the rule of espan during 70 CE Roman historian suetonius points out the emperor vesan erected several new public buildings such as the Temple of Peace in the famous Amphitheater known as the colan again fesan knew the only way to regain Rome's trust was to start rebuilding it and to show his love for the Roman citizens however bestan dies in 79 CE resulting in him I had sing the finished product of the Coliseum but his son Titus dedicates the coliseum in ADC with 100 days of games in order to understand what events were held in the Coliseum it needs to be understood that the Coliseum held up to 50 to 880,000 Spectators with their seats divided up into decks these decks consisted of their consisted in showing their social class for example the first deck consisted of the higher part of the Roman society such as Nobles priest and then the knights the second deck consists of the populace you know the merchants and the freed men the last deck consisted of more than half the people in the Coliseum which was made up of the women and the poor people living in Rome now while everyone was divided up into their social class for their seating arrangements everyone in the Coliseum can have a clear view of the arena for showing how even if you're the poorest person in Rome you are still able to witness the games just as the emperor is the most famous event held in the Coliseum was the gladiator fights whenever someone hears the word Coliseum they immediately think of the Gladiators and them fighting so I won't go into too much detail about the Gladiator fights because everyone already knows what a gladiator fight is but the other events held in the Coliseum were animal hunts executions and the occasional mock Naval battles animal hunts simple the Coliseum would be transformed into a habitat of an animal and then there would be a hunter someone down on the Arena floor Hunting the animal this was a way for Rome to see how it is that they're how it is that they' like fought outside of room how is they fought in these Uncharted territories like the like where elephants come from and lions and stuff like that after the next event is executions executions are more of the Bland event because it was simply someone is coming out to die so Roman citizens would just watch people die on the floor whether it is by a person or even by an animal occasionally now one of the last events held in the Coliseum because it happened occasionally were the mock Naval battles now the reason these happen occasionally was this mock Naval battles required the Coliseum being filled up with water now the Coliseum being filled up with water caused many problems it was cost efficient and it just resulted in destroying the Coliseum so mock na B is rarely ever happen but they did happen because they're away for the Roman society to see how it is that their empire fights like and they are able to see some of the most famous battles that Rome has won on sea Emperor Titus and Demian Titus is the eldest son of vpan who ruled Rome from 79 to 81 CE and was responsible for the finish of the colum Titus was a well-loved Emperor as he was a man who led Rome's victory in Judea and Jerusalem returning all the treasures from those places back to Rome one of titus's most well-known games was he Titus wasn't one of the people who used mock Naval battles in the beginning to show the Roman society how successful their empire has been and how successful they are being so he filled up the Coliseum with water bringing a bunch of animals and ships into the Coliseum to put on a show for the Roman society and Roman historian s suoni says he gave several Gladiator shows and hunts of wild beast and even a sea fight in the old namia I'm sorry if that's wrong exhibiting all his spectacles in the most magnificent manner Titus always made sure that every game that he put on for the Roman society was the best it could be in entertaining the Roman society while making sure that the people involved in the game are also doing the best that they can now Titus would end up dying in 81 CE so his brother Demian would rule Rome from 81 to 96 CE and was responsible from planting the hippo which is the underground area of the Coliseum which is where certain Gladiators slaves animals would stay now now Roman historian sutin suus also says mishan also enlarged the Coliseum and completed its underground Chambers which were used for housing Gladiators wild animals which is what I just said so I don't want to go over that but another quote he also included was he had a mechanical device by which he would pull down the platform upon which his enemies stood plunging them to their deaths in front of the crowd this showed deman's cruelty deman was a very cruel leader who used the games to show his cruelity in the games dichan hosted the games were cruel he used the games in order to show how of a cruel Emperor he was so the Roman society would know not to mess with Demian the significance of the Coliseum the Coliseum served as a reminder for the extent of Rome's Empire as an example what the animal hunts these are animals from all across the world now how would an elephant come to Rome well Rome went to the part of the world where elephants are conquered that part and brought elephants back so whenever the Roman society would see animals from another part of the world it would be a reminder of how successful their empire has been because they have been able to travel to that area conquer the animal and bring it back for entertainment alongside being a staple in Roman culture the Coliseum did much more than just entertained it served as a way for the emperor to get their popular vote now this is easyest seen with fesan because fesan began the construction of the Coliseum for the people and in doing so that results in many of the people trusting him and trusting his sons Titus and michian resulting in a very successful Dynasty between that family now the Coliseum presented the social hierarchy seen throughout Roman society by the Implement of the seating arrangements Rome is known for their infinite social class system whenever talks about ancient civilizations go on the class system is always talked about and the Coliseum did not shift from that cu the Coliseum made sure that the class systm made a thing because it is important for that Arena to show the class system of Rome for those outside people coming in now the last part of the significance of the Coliseum is the Roman Coliseum pav the way for modern sports to exist and to be performed in front of an arena I won't go into too much detail but if you were to think about a basketball game today you go to Arena the people sitting closest to to the court are the higher people in like the higher people in the world you know your celebrities your you know whoever politicians you know and then next up you know you have your normal people and in the nose beds you know you have the people who maybe can't afford that much money on a seat so they have to be up but keep in mind in these Arena everyone has a form has like a view of the Arena everyone can see what's going on so the Coliseum paved the way for modern sports today and the way Arenas are built and in the ways that people said at them the fall of the Coliseum when the Roman Empire fell it meant the fall of the Coliseum one interesting part about the Coliseum that really people don't seem to think about was Coliseum was very expensive to maintain so when the Roman Empire started to fade away all that money from the empire was also fading away so the money couldn't be used for these games to entertain the Roman society so the games would start start to slowly fade out because it would cost too many resources for them to maintain the last gladiator fight happened in 404 CE now the gladi year fights did go on for you know around 300 plus years but with the rise of Christianity more negative thoughts came about with the games um I forgot his name but there was a guy who a Christian monk who went into one of the games to try and break up the people fighting and he in result was stoned to death and that just showed how Rome felt about their games but Christianity was spreading so fast and so vast that it doesn't matter what the Romans thought because at a certain point Christianity would win and it would force the Coliseum AKA The Gladiator games to fade away because they are violent and they are wrong in all the fall of the Coliseum resulted because the Roman Empire fell the Roman Empire were the only people to use the coliseum in this sort of fashion to use it for their executions to use it to entertain to use it to influence the way people think the Coliseum was just not way for the higher ups in Rome to be seen but it was a way for everyone in Rome to be at one place at the same time and when they're in the costum they are all equal because they are all there watching the games
