Experiment Setup for Gas Collection from Hydrilla
Objective
To observe the gas produced by Hydrilla when exposed to bright light and to test its properties.
Materials Needed
- Hydrilla (aquatic plant)
- Test tube
- Bright light source
- Stopper for test tube
- Glowing splint
Procedure
-
Setup Preparation
- Place the Hydrilla in a test tube.
- Position the test tube in a location where it is exposed to bright light.
-
Observation Period
- Observe for any gas bubbles released from the Hydrilla.
- Note any gas bubbles released over the course of the experiment.
- Allow the setup to remain undisturbed for 24 hours.
-
Gas Collection
- After 24 hours, carefully move the test tube without disturbing the contents.
- Stopper the mouth of the test tube to contain the gas.
-
Gas Testing
- Take a glowing splint and introduce it into the test tube.
- Observe whether the splint relights or not.
Notes
- Expected Results:
- If the gas is oxygen, the glowing splint should relight, indicating the presence of oxygen produced by photosynthesis in Hydrilla.
- If there is no reaction, the gas may not be oxygen, requiring further investigation.
