hello and welcome to my easy to understand guide to genre subgenre and hybrid genre these are all key terms and phrases that you will need to know if you are studying media studies either at gcc or at a level and i'm going to explain the difference between them so the word genre is basically a fancy but a key terminology meaning a type of something so we have different genres of music things like rap hip-hop pop rock metal etc we have genres of film horror romance western and action so genre basically means the type of film or the type of music video the type of video game sub genre the prefix sub means under so it's the idea that it's like a sub or an under category of a bigger genre so the horror genre for example can be broken down into lots of smaller genres it's not not every horror is the same you could have supernatural horror you could have psychological horror you could have slasher horror torture horror there's so many different types of horror movies so it's just a slightly more specific term referring to a particular type within that genre the word hybrid means bringing two or more things together like a hybrid car is like petrol and electricity so hybrid is when you bring two or more genres together so examples of hybrid genres might be romantic comedy because it's both romance and comedy um or action adventure you might have sci-fi and horror together within a film and it might be more than two genres it could be that a film has you know maybe it's primarily an action film but there's also a lot of romance and there's also a bit of a sci-fi element to it so some genres might be combined into particular products
