Understanding Communication Barriers

Good day everyone! This is Sir Rick once again and welcome to another episode of Learning in the Subject Oral Communication in Context. Sit back, relax, take notes, and learn.

So let's get started. Today's episode is what we call as the barriers of communication. So this is the third lesson in the subject oral communication in context. So let's get to know the different barriers of communication.

I know you have learned learned something before? We have discussed this one and I hope you remember. So let's define first what is a barrier. So a barrier is any factor that can affect the flow of communication. So again, affect the flow of communication.

So whether we like it or not, there's always a barrier in a communication and it's important for us to overcome them. And how do we overcome them? Of course, we have to know them. first right let's get to know them in order for us to overcome them so let's get started with the first barrier of communication so the first one is what we called as emotional barrier so according to the definition here emotions are feelings that humans express such as sadness hunger anger etc so emotions can actually affect the way we communicate so for example do you remember when you are so hungry and someone talks to you it's either you don't listen to them or it's either you throw tantrums or you get angry to them right that can affect the flow of communication because we cannot communicate effectively if we feel like extreme emotion too much emotions so that is why in order for us to communicate effectively we have to check our emotions so again this is emotional barrier or related to feeling Now the second one here is the language barrier.

This is the most common one especially when you're talking to foreigners. From the name itself, language, so this is a barrier caused by the differences of the language used by the communicators. So simple, if I am a Japanese and you are a Russian and we don't speak the same language or we don't have like a common language for us to use, that can affect the way we communicate with each other. other. So most likely we won't communicate at all because we don't understand each other, right?

So the first one in the language barrier is the differences of the language. The second one is it can also be caused by the complexity of a certain language. So when you say complexity it means it's complicated, it's complex, it's something difficult.

So there are some structures in a language wherein it's difficult for the receiver to understand. understand and that can affect the way we communicate or that can affect the way the receiver or the speaker understands the message so it's very important to check the language also okay so that's the second one the third one is physical disability so physical disability from the name itself disability so it can be caused by the body impairment or disease so one great example of this one is hearing loss or when you have difficulty hearing because of a certain disease so it can affect the way we communicate because as we all know hearing our senses especially hearing and our mouth or our speaking is part of our part of communication so it's very important for us you know to have these senses but if we don't have it can affect the way we communicate so that's why we need to find a common language so usually they use sign language for this one but physical disability can affect the way we communicate with other people now another one here is information overload so from the term overload overload sorry um it means that there's too much information have you tried um like joining a math class and then you are given a lot of formulas and then at the end of the day like You cannot respond to the teacher or you cannot answer the questions because there's too much information given to you. And that could affect the way we communicate with one another.

We cannot respond to the discussion of the teacher because there's too much information. Another example for this one is when you're talking to your friends and your friend, for example, gives you a lot of information. And it's very difficult for you to process. those information.

information so that can affect the way you respond so that's why we have to check whether we are giving too much information To the receiver so that is another barrier, which is the information overload now Another thing here is, so let me show you a picture, so let me read. It's just a mild hyperinsulism due to islet cell hyperplasia with a touch of hepatic insufficiency and glycogen depletion. This is actually a situation in the hospital as shown in the picture.

And on the left side, we have the doctor and on the right side, we have the patient. So imagine your doctor saying this one. Do you think you would understand?

Definitely not, right? This is quite difficult for us to understand. Why?

Because there is a barrier that is called jargon. So when you say jargon, it is a set of words and phrased. used by a particular group of people especially in their work or profession that are not generally understood.

So this is coming from the Cambridge English Dictionary. Now let me simplify this one. Set of words and phrase.

So these are terms used by a certain group of people. Now for example, we have medical jargon. Medical terms that are only understood by doctors. So if you remember the previous slide, you can see there the picture, right?

you are given those words, probably if you're a common person, probably you won't understand such thing because we don't have knowledge in that, on those words. So it's very important for the doctor to simplify those things, right? So that is actually what we call as jargon. Another example, like me, I'm a teacher.

So we have, teachers have also certain language that only us can understand. Computer experts, IT experts so they have also languages wherein only them can understand okay or people who studied about that certain area can understand so it's very important to simplify in order to understand so one example here I mean sorry before we go to the example let me simplify the term jargon so jargon is a specialized language used in a certain field or area of knowledge so special language so it is a language only used in a certain field so remember that one those are jargon so medical jargon teaching jargon computer jargon IT jargons so those are examples of jargon now I think the most common one is the medical jargon so let me give you an example here so normal people they would say nose bleeding but for medical people they call it epitaxis so they have like certain term for such normal diseases. So if you're a doctor and you're talking to a doctor, you use the jargon then you can understand each other. But if you use this to your patient, probably they won't understand unless you explain to them or unless you paraphrased it. So that is an example of jargon.

Okay and then another one here is medium disturbance. This is what we always experience in online class. So this barrier happens when there is interference in the signal so when you say interference there's a problem like something is blocking the signal so for example when you have a bad signal we call it a medium disturbance so during online classes MS teams you know the internet sometimes it's not good so it can affect the way I communicate with you because you won't be able to hear clearly because of the signal so that is is actually what we called as medium disturbance so you can say to me like sir i'm sorry i wasn't able to go to the class because of medium disturbance char so anyway yeah medium disturbance is something related to signal so the medium the signal itself is disturbed by you know by the weather or something so that is medium disturbance and the last one here is um noise this is one of the most common factors that can affect communication. It's either like face-to-face or virtual communication. So noise is a loud and unpleasant sound which can interrupt the reception of the message.

So for example, when you're talking to your friends and then there are a group of people there that are too loud, a group of people that is too loud, then that can affect the way you communicate with one another because it's difficult to receive. the sound if there is like a background noise. The same with virtual communication.

Like if there are like chicken sound or like electric fan or let's say dogs barking, that can affect the way you listen because it can distract you, right? So the noise can distract you. So as much as possible, you have to minimize the noise in order to communicate effectively. So I think those are the barriers of communication.

just a disclaimer it's not everything these are just the most common ones so there are more barriers actually but anyway that's the last one and let me give you a term okay what is the result if communicators cannot control the barrier this can affect the way we communicate and we call it communication breakdown so when there is communication breakdown that means the communication did not flow continuously smoothly because the barriers are blocking the communication so we call it communication breakdown and we don't want this one right so as a as an effective communicator we have to avoid communication breakdown by controlling or by lessening or minimizing the communication barriers now when you say communication breakdown according to Collins dictionary it is a failure to exchange information, ideas, or thoughts because there's a barrier that is blocking the way of the speaker and the receiver. So that is causing the communication breakdown. Now let me give you an example here.

So there is a picture here. So you can say, I will read this one. I'm sorry. Today's topic is communication breakdowns.

What he'd say? Something about communism breaking down? That's old news. Wake me when it's over. Hear that?

Meeting's over. Short and sweet. So you can see here that the speakers and the receivers here do not understand each other.

So they didn't get the message of the source of the information. So this is the reason why they are experiencing communication breakdown. Now I know that we have experienced that one once in our life, right? So maybe you have to identify the barrier first and try to lessen or minimize.

them in order for you to like avoid communication breakdown. So I think that's the end of our discussion. So again, you already know the different types of or different examples of barriers. So what you need to do is that you have to overcome them, you have to minimize them in order not to experience communication breakdown because an effective communicator always try to avoid communication breakdown. Okay, so thank you so much.

So that's the end of my presentation. So guys, I hope you have learned something in this subject. So again, remember there are different barriers, but we cannot avoid them. Whether we like it or not, it's always there.

So what we need to do is to overcome them. We need to minimize them. So thank you so much. So if you have any clarifications, see you next time.

you in the synchronous classes and I hope you have learned something. Thank you so much and have a nice day everyone. Bye!
