Overview
This lecture provides a comprehensive overview of USC's study abroad programs, including eligibility, program types, application process, and available resources.
Program Overview
- USC offers over 50 semester and year-long programs in 25+ countries, plus a summer program at Pembroke College, Cambridge.
- Programs include direct enrollment, USC-administered, and provider-based options.
- Some schools (Annenberg, Marshall, Architecture) at USC have their own separate study abroad programs.
Eligibility & Academics
- Minimum 3.0 USC cumulative GPA required for all programs; some may require higher.
- Some programs have language requirements if USC teaches that language.
- Major/minor credit is possible for most, but not all, programs; elective credit is available widely.
- Students remain enrolled at USC and earn regular USC credit (not transfer credit); courses are credit/no credit, except USC Paris and Madrid.
- GE courses cannot be taken abroad.
Advising & Resources
- Visit dornsife.usc.edu/overseas for all study abroad information.
- Use Express walk-in advising for general questions; book appointments for specific inquiries.
- Study abroad ambassadors and binder feedback are available to help you choose programs.
Housing Options
- Housing includes homestays, university dorms, shared apartments, or (rarely) finding your own.
- If program housing is offered, students must use it.
Choosing a Program
- Consider academics, program model (immersion, language), housing, location, climate, safety, and cost.
- Review timing and eligibility, as some programs have specific class standing or prior enrollment requirements.
Cost, Financial Aid & Scholarships
- Most programs charge less than regular USC tuition, with a $3,000 administrative fee for non-USC tuition programs.
- USC tuition scholarships and financial aid often apply to study abroad tuition.
- Multiple scholarships are available through USC, partner institutions, and external sources.
Application Process
- Apply to both USC and the host institution (except USC Paris/Madrid, which is one application).
- Application components: personal statement, transcript, passport copy, financial aid statement, course pre-approval, and recommendation.
- Deadlines: Fall/year programs due mid-February; Spring programs mid-September.
Passports & Visas

- Visa requirements varyβsome take months; your passport may be held during processing.
- DACA/TPS students should consult the USC Immigration Clinic at least 9 months in advance.
Special Program Types
- Experiential programs include internships, health-related fieldwork, and themed cohorts (e.g., Buddhist studies, migration, sustainability).
