USC Study Abroad Overview

okay so this presentation is going to give us a good overview of studying abroad through USC what it entails what you need to do overall eligibility of requirements and hopefully make you feel a little more prepared and a little more excited going into this so right now we are currently in our cycle for fall 2024 applications those applications are going to be due in February on February 15th at midnight um so if you're still just getting started you're like I'm not going to study abroad till way later that is totally okay we're here to help you start planning it's a really good idea to plan as early as possible um yeah so starting off what we're going to cover is a scope of all of the overseas studies programs resources and a website overview eligibility requirements for all programs and where you can find eligibility information for each program academic credit course approvals with your academic adviser the different types of programs and the housing they have have how to choose a program maybe you're like I'm totally excited about every program there is or maybe you have a really specific region you're hoping to go to we'll help you look at those um and also when is a good opportunity to go we'll talk about the cost of study abroad financial aid scholarships application process passports and student visas and then the next steps an overview of all our programs is we have over 50 semester and year-long programs in over 25 countries a good majority of our program could be a semester or a year but we have some programs that are only a semester and some programs that are only a year we also have one summer program at pemro Cambridge in the UK um and that's an eight-week summer program there are a lot of schools that we work with but then there are some USC schools that have their own programs um so if you're interested in a May Master then you'll want to talk to the faculty members that are associated with the dorai faculty-led programs they all the main Masters are a USC faculty member that takes students on a program so that's a totally separate office if you are a marshall anenberg or architecture student and you're hoping to get Marshall anenberg architecture major credit on those programs um you're going to have to go through one of their programs they have their own offices and staff who can go on our programs all majors are welcome and all students can earn elective credit if you are looking to take only elective credit then you could really take your pick of a lot of different programs but if you're going to want to take major or minor courses abroad which is what the vast vast majority of students do this is a good breakdown major minor credit if you're in dorfe Rosy vby price cinematic Arts dramatic Arts Pharmacy gold Thorton or kek you're able to earn major or minor credit on our programs like I said in the last slide if you're part of annenburg or Marshall or architecture you cannot get major minor credit on our programs they have their own study Abad offices and they'd be happy to talk to you you if you're a gerentology or an occupational therapy major check with your advisor um we've had students who where these Majors go and they take elective credit but if you want to get major credit for those programs check with your adviser and see what they have to say about what needs you have some resources to get started the best place to start is going to be our website dorne. usc.edu overseas um and on this page I'll give you an overview on the next page but it's got everything from getting started to all the way from when you return we have a lot of tips and resources um and we're happy to help you study abroad advisors are always available we do advising appointments um but right now during the first few weeks of the semester we are doing walk-in Express advising so if it's just a quick question something that's not really program specific we're happy to talk to you about it but if you have something about a specific program or a really specific question about your circumstances we recommend you make an advising appointment um through our website you can also talk to study abroad ambassadors these are students who loved their time abroad and give up their time they volunteer to be at our events um our info sessions our fairs and also they're just available for you to email and ask questions about different programs so we would love for you to talk to study abroad ambassadors in our office we have a bunch of program binders with student feedback so come to our office you can see our giant bookcase that it's like about this size it's just filled with binders that have program evaluations and a lot of times students will leave their name and email and so you can actually contact them and ask them questions that's why it's all kept in our binders for student privacy but we're really hoping that you come and take advantage this is the website starting looking at this Center chunk right here um and this Center chunk is the main page for our website so you can see we have getting started um we have which over here to the right we have the what the different tabs look like under this getting started tab we have information for before you apply finances cost Aid and scholarships academics info for families frequently asked questions I really recommend especially you just command F search whatever question word you have it's probably on the frequently asked questions page and our how to apply tab which is absolutely crucial when you're starting your application process we also have a programs Tab and through there you can search programs by major programs by region we have a separate special real quick access page to USC Paris and USC Madrid and then we also have information on preh health if you're a pre-health student and also if you're looking for an internship or research or any kind of service on what programs could be a good fit um we also have student experiences abroad that's where you can find information about our um uh our ambassadors and there are also students who just like write little pieces about their time abroad so you can see those little snippets on our website once you choose a program every single one of the pages have these exact same tabs they all have an overview and immediately under overview is eligibility information they all have an academics tab which is going to tell you all of the things that you need to know about academics they're going to have a course pre-approval form which is what you're going to use to get your courses pre-approved by advisers we have a tab that says um housing student life and so there you can see housing information information on what students typically do their different programs finances how to apply and resources um this how to apply tab is going to be super helpful because it has information on that application through USC and also that application to that program directly for eligibility information um all of our programs have different eligibility criteria um but something that they all have in common is all of them at least require a 3.0 USC cumulative GPA so that means at the time of application you do have to have a USC transcript with a USC cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 some programs are going to require a higher GPA and some of those programs might have different gpas for different Majors so check and see what it requires uh you're going to have to meet the language requirement if there is any half of our programs don't have a language requirement those are programs that are in English-speaking countries or they're in countries whose language we don't teach here A good rule of thumb is if USC teaches that language then that country if you're going to study abroad there is going to have a language requirement of some kind you're going to want to check major restrictions this is one of the biggest questions I get all the time is they're saying my major isn't listed can I go here if there is a if it's a program where only certain majors are allowed if you don't see your major unfortunately you're not not eligible for it but we have a lot of programs that are open to all majors so you might just need to kind of look around you also have to have a good student conduct record we get information from it was called sjs but it's you know student conduct um and title n and all that kind of stuff so they give us information so before you're accepted into any program we hear back from our friends over at student conduct for the language requirement even if the program provider has no language requir M dor does so if you look at a program and you say oh well I went to their website and they don't have a language requirement you're getting USC Credit on all the programs um a lot of the programs have been around for a while we've seen what works and what doesn't we're going to have a language requirement if that language is taught at USC um if a language is taught at USC at least two semesters or equivalent is going to be required sometimes it might have a higher language requirement um so you just have to check different type typ of language background that you might have that would factor into satisfying the language requirement could be AP or IB credit so depending on the program um this might meet the language requirement for some programs you might need to take additional courses the AP class um I believe it tests you either into or out of like the the 220 so that third semester um but if you need to take any additional classes then you would have to take that separately some background in the language so if you say well I speak this language fluently I speak it at home I I've taken classes on the side I think I've done really well on du lingo that's great you can take a placement test through the center for languages and cultures keep in mind the most you can test out of is three semesters because that test only uh uh can test you out of like the DOR language requirement so the most you can get is three semesters if you enroll in French 175 Portuguese 175 or Italian 175 um which are only available for students Beyond a third semester level in another romance language then you can actually take that one class and it counts as having taken the first three levels of the language so if you've already taken a romance language and you're really interested in going to Italy but you've never taken Italian before consider taking Italian 175 to use that as the prerequisite um and then of course USC language courses if you're planning on starting a new language it's a good idea to start early and plan ahead for example our program that's in Germany requires four semesters of German so if if you are planning on starting German to go on that program you're going to have to plan a little bit in advance for academic status and credit a lot of students want to know am I still considered USC student are these transfer units are they how does it count so while you're abroad you're still enrolled at USC as a continuing student and you're going to earn regular USC Credit it is not going to be transfer credit uh this credit be applied as major credit some programs are going to require that you take major courses some programs you can take whatever but some programs do require you to take major classes you can earn minor credit and you can earn elective credit which goes toward the 128 unit degree requirement for Dorn safe um but check with your adviser because some different degrees have different unit requirements so just check with them the classes are going to come back as no as credit no credit that means that these classes you take abroad do not have an effect on your GPA they can can be applied toward major minor or elective credit but they are not going to affect your GPA the exception is USC Paris and USC Madrid you are going to get letter grades for those courses and they will affect your GPA the other thing is you cannot get any GE Credit so that's no RIT 150 or 340 or the other GES you aren't able to get credit for those while you're abroad for advice advising there are two advisers you're going to want to talk to throughout this whole process so one of them is going to be study PR advisor so that's me that's my co-worker uh Holly and Jen Carlo that's the director Peter we help you find a program that's a good fit for you we can provide General guidance on where to find courses available abroad sometimes it can be kind of tricky I think of myself as like a translator for the course structure and the school structure for the programs that I advise for and we can help students find course information to take to the major minor Adviser your academic adviser is the key person for questions of major and minor credit if your question is will I get credit for my major for this class you want to talk to your academic adviser they can provide specific advice on what courses are going to count for your major or minor they can help you create and update your four-year plan if you really really want to go on a program and you're like there's only two classes I can take for my major can I move things around they're the one you'll want to ask for that and some academic advisers have run lists of courses that have been approved in the past for that major or minor so they're the ones that can help you with how you'll get credit I'm the one that can help you find the syllabi to give them um figure out what classes are open to study abroad students that kind of thing for program types we offer semester and year-long programs but all the programs are a little bit different and they fall in these three types of categories the first one is direct enrollment that's where you're enrolling directly in that foreign University as a study abroad student sometimes they call it visiting or affiliate or temporary or however they want to call it some examples of this are University of Auckland University of Cape Town university University of Edinburgh you're just going in there for one semester as a student there the second type are going to be USC administered programs that's like USC Paris and USC Madrid that's where you're at a study center so you're not taking all of your classes at a university although there are some direct enrollment and partner universities so some classes you might be taking at like a USC Center some classes you might take at a university those two programs also have a two-unit internship available if you're interested then there are program providers this is a study abroad company that kind of it gives you some support with a us-based institution while also having some uh direct enrollment and immersion there so a lot of times these program providers they're going to have a study center with other us students only for example that's our our program in Athens that is where you are studying abroad and your classes are all with American students sometimes there's a study center plus direct enrollment options so you're taking some classes with us or uh with uh us students and some classes directly at a university like our program in Milan there are some programs um that are a field station with other us students so that's Hands-On learning that's programs like SFS Australia sit Mexico that's what those kind of look like so the main thing is that the if the two programs at USC Paris and USC Madrid those are classes with only USC students specifically but other program providers it's with either us students or a mix of everything in addition to those three types of programs we have some special focuses so if you want to do more than just take classes while you're abroad consider some of these options we have coursework and internship that means that if you're looking at uh Australia there are you can take three courses at a&u and a 4unit internship in government or a think tank or an NGO for USC Paris and USC Madrid you would take classes and do a two-unit internship we also have some options that are considered highly experiential if you're preh health or you want or you're thinking about health related fields we have a program in cie in Botswana through a company called cie that is um Community public health so it has a lot of really cool opportunities to see what public health looks like so you get to do shadowing you get to visit different sites and different centers and you get a lot more experience in that we also have a program at Kings College London their health and Society option um is where you can Shadow different health professionals you can attend different lectures from like practicing doctors very very cool for someone who's uh pre-health we also have a few other programs that present unique opportunities like we have a Buddhist studies program in India you are going to be there meditating daily it's very experiential the program in sat Mexico from the title you can probably tell it's migration borders and transnational communities where you kind of you study the migration process and you visit all of these different uh like key places that play a role in Immigration rainforce T Reef in Australia it is um a really cool opportunity if you're interested in rainforest and sustainability and envir environmental um and then there's Wildlife Management studies in Kenya and Tanzania so those are some unique opportunities that you're taking classes but you're in more of like a cohort everybody's kind of doing the same types of classes and they're all for a really specific Focus for housing um there are different types of housing sometimes there's just one option for a program and that's what everyone does sometimes there are several if housing is available through the program you must live in that program provided housing so some of the examples some programs are homestays um many programs that have language study that's a really common way because that's a really immersive way to practice the language um some experiential programs have hom stays and it does require the most adaptability but it also is the best way to constantly be using the language that you're studying and to be the most immersed in the culture a lot of direct enrollment universities are going to do a university or private dorm so sometimes you're with other American students sometimes you're with um just like all of the University students some programs do an allocated apartment so you would do a shared apartment arranged by a program provider that's really not as common um sometimes they're local students sometimes it's us students only and then very very few programs find your own housing it's way less common um but some programs are like that in Ireland um Australian New Zealand and S Po in Paris a lot of students are thinking okay great this looks awesome I'm so excited but when should I go the best thing to do is check with your academic or major advisor for the best time for you your personal situation and what you're studying for a lot of students the third to last semester is the most common but the sophomore year is actually best for a lot of different Majors for prehal students they recommend the fall of your junior year specifically but based on if you have transfer credits if you changed majors you know this third semester to final although it's common it doesn't work for everybody so check with your adviser and see if there's a good time for you um there are some program restrictions meaning that some programs are for juniors and seniors only um some programs require you to have been at USC for a full year before the program um so just take a look at the eligibility and restrictions keep in mind that you can do a maximum of two semesters abroad um so you can do a semester now you could do a semester later um you can still do May Masters and all that kind of stuff I wouldn't plan on doing a May Master immediately after like a spring abroad because that don't do that but otherwise um the only restriction is that it's a maximum of two semesters for timing most programs do end after USC graduation if it is a really big deal to you that you really want to walk during graduation and you want to study abroad in your final semester at USC just keep in mind that it's either going to be a flight home and then a flight back um to finish out your semester there or you might be missing walking for graduation that doesn't mean you wouldn't get your degree it just means you wouldn't be able to walk for graduation and most southern hemisphere programs so we're talking Latin America Australia New Zealand South Africa a lot of those programs are February to June and July to November because their seasons are flipped and so there are school year like their school system their months are different so if you're thinking about internships you're trying to plan ahead um keep in mind that those program dates are going to be a little different from us programs when you're thinking of choosing a program these are the four categories that I would think of academics first of all think of what courses you're interested in and what courses will help you stay on track to graduate on time you want to make sure that you're taking classes that are going to ultimately help you graduate you're a student it's studying abroad so you want to make sure your classes are going to fit in with your academics then think about a program model do I want to be in a program where I have a lot of language immersion am I trying to go somewhere where I'm going to use a language a lot am I trying to go somewhere that speaks English what is my program language need do I want to go somewhere with all USC students do I want to go somewhere with all us students do I want to go somewhere with all local students do I want to go somewhere with a mix of them do I have any special or specific requests for living arrangements some people are like throwing wherever I don't care some people have other accommodation needs or they have just other preferences so you want to look at the housing situation because that might help you determine where you'll be think about location is this a place where you are interested in the culture or is it a place that it sounds like your friends are going to go to don't get me wrong it's great to go somewhere with friends but that should not be the main reason why you choose an area because you're ultimately just not going to have the best time if you're not as interested in that actual area so think about am I actually interested in this area what's the city size like like some people love a big city some people love a small City and some people love being on a campus so take a look at that um in the region to determine what would work for you climate is a really big thing if you born and raised in Southern California you've experienced more Sun than most people around the world do so climate might factor in if you want to experience something that's totally different than what you've ever experienced in your life then that's fantastic but if you want to go somewhere with a similar CL climate it can it can require some looking into location and also for safety and health different people with different conditions different um Lifestyles different just everything about you think about who you are and what would make you feel safe and what access to certain Health Care would be important to you when you're abroad and then there's the cost cost of living is so different everywhere you go cost is different if you're in a major city or a small town cost is different if you're in Europe versus Australia you also want to think about the cost of preparation so beforehand think about um does this require a student visa I need to pay for and how much is that going to be does this program require vaccinations um that I would need to get um like yellow fever or typhoid or you know other vaccinations do I need to purchase a passport do I have a passport that's already up to date how much a flight is going to cost a flight is a lot cheaper going from here to Mexico than it is from here to London then you know so take a look at how much the flight's going to cost all that's going to factor into it as well for the cost of study abroad we'll break it down in a few different ways for tuition the majority of the programs the tuition is going to be less than USC regular tuition the majority of programs you're paying for the program tuition like that school's tuition instead of USC tuition and so for a lot of those is less some of them I've seen as low as like 8, ,000 for tuition up through all the way like USC tuition so um they all have very different amounts of tuition that are charged the two types that do charge USC tuition are going to be exchanges so that's Trinity College Dublin um CK and Hong Kong and sanso and Paris those are exchanges you pay USC tuition and the two USC programs USC Madrid and USC Paris those also charge USC tuition when it comes to fin in scholarships if you're like oh I really wanted to go on this program and it cost so much money can my tuition scholarships apply yes they can if you get a tuition scholarship from USC it can apply toward the tuition cost abroad as well but it'll only apply to tuition cost if you have specific questions on how your Aid can apply I encourage you to read our financial aid tab you can also meet with an adviser and come in and ask um do your USC financial aid and scholarships also apply they also do if it's a scholarship that's not only for tuition then it could potentially apply to the other charges that are on there uh a charge like this fee you'll see down here programs that do not charge USC tuition so that's most of them are charged a $3,000 administrative fee it's the fee of studying abroad it's the cost of making everything happen it's the cost of you getting USC units all of the different systems working together every single student is charged that $3,000 admin fee um unless you're on an exchange or a USC program and then also living cost like I said it depends on the region here we've got a nice little chart comparing different costs so over on the left you see USC on campus um the approximate living expenses and the approximate tuition and then you can see um all the numbers go down sometimes the tuition is way less but your cost of living might be different um it just depends on if you're living on campus off campus how expensive you're planning on you know eating every day if you're planning on going out to a michell and start a restaurant for dinner every night or if you're planning on cooking for yourself whatever it is those numbers can kind of vary um but you'll see that overall it's usually a lot less money for most of our programs for most students for scholarships there are a lot of scholarship opportunities for you for Dorn cye there are three dorfe specific scholarships that we're aware of there's the D scholarship if you're studying in Spain the h for Germany and if you're a trustee scholar there's the gold family scholarship so you can apply for that if you already have a trustee scholarship through USC there is the study abroad Grant that's offered through the USC financial aid office the study abroad Grant um is I believe up to $2,000 and it's available for all students that are studying abroad um and when you go into search for this it comes up as this database and you can go through and look through all these Scholarships in the database there are ton there's the black Alumni Association scholarship that's for USC Madrid specifically and then there's also the USC Africa fund for students studying abroad in Africa some of our partner institutions offer their own scholarships so the University of Bristol has a cost of living scholarship for up to $5,000 um ciee I C and mid East those are all program providers so they're like the companies that take you on these and they all offer scholarships as well there are tons more that you can find on our website there are also scholarships available through the US government if you have a pel grant for example you're eligible for a Gilman scholarship um and then if you're studying a critical language you can look at what like on their website they tell you what critical languages are considered um but it's considered like a a critical need language High need language um so not like common ones but ones that from a government standpoint they would consider to be essential so you can take a look and see if you qualify for those and then we have a ton more of databases on our website that you can look through the application process for applying to any of the programs you're going to apply to USC and to the program itself The Only Exception is USC Paris and USC Madrid it's just one application just to USC every other program you're applying to USC and the program itself you have to be accepted by both of us because we're looking at specific things and the program is looking at specific specific things so we both have to match up so the process first thing you're going to do you're going to open your application you'll visit the how to apply tab on our study abroad page to apply and it has critical application information it's where I've heard students say uh how do I do this what do I do here what do I do here and I write out the instructions for you deadlines for the applications deadlines are um for spring applications they're due in mid-september and then for fall or full Academic Year they're doe in mid mid February so right now it's going to be due in mid-February you're going to fill out and all the information and upload documents so you have to write a personal statement there's like a a questionnaire it's just like the study Brad application you have to submit an official transcript so order the official transcript and upload it a passport copy financial aid statement and recommendation sometimes it's a recommendation sometimes it's not either way no matter what the program is you will need a recommendation it's just usually the program is going to ask for it but if the program doesn't ask for it then we'll ask for it you're going to want to submit the application by the deadline fill everything out upload it hit the submit button to finalize the application and all applications are due at 11:59 Pacific Time on the deadline after you submit the application to USC um you're going to have an application interview with your study broad adviser none of us can send you a broad without knowing who you are a little bit about you what you hope to do we'll be taking notes because we want to be able to best support you while you're over there we're also going to check with student conduct USC housing and the title 9 office just to make sure that everything's all cool um before we're able to offer any kind of acceptance you might be wondering what are these different documents what do I need to do I'm panicking have no fear for the letter of recommendation like I said it'll vary by the program sometimes the program will say uh just put in their email we'll send them a link sometimes they request a hard copy letter like I said if that program requires a letter of recommendation then we don't but if they don't require it then we do so either way you're going to have to get a recommendation um you're going to have to write a personal statement where it's like 300 words it's not that crazy it's saying why this program what are your academic goals we also want to make sure that you are mature and that you're prepared to adapt to living in a different culture we want to make sure that we're sending students that are going to be respectful um and that have like a genuine interest and willingness to go you also have to submit a course pre-approval form for this you need to meet with your academic advisor and you're going to choose tentative courses for many programs they might not have an updated um course catalog yet that's okay what I need to see what all of us need to see in our office is that you've looked at classes and seen that there are potential classes for you there we need to make sure that you've looked at the academics of it your academic advisor is your key person in choosing these tentative classes and determining what courses meet your major and minor requirements remember I can't tell you if it's going to satisfy a major and minor requirement only your academic adviser can you're also going to have to submit a passport copy um and with that if you don't have a passport that's okay you're either going to tell us I have a valid passport I need to renew the passport um that I have or I need to apply for one for the first time do it early don't wait until you submit an application don't wait if you want to study abroad do it right now you're also going to need to submit transcripts financial aid statement If you're receiving aid um and some programs might have a few more requirements for you now that we've done the USC application there's the host institution application so you're going to open an application from them the instructions are on the how to apply tab of the study abroad program page on our page the same how to apply tab that you go to we have information on the host institution application the applications are going to vary by program they all have different requirements um sometimes that how to apply tab is going to say really specific information on when the application opens and when you need to submit it sometimes it's going to say um we have to nominate you first we you'll be able to apply to them after you apply to us sometimes it says you have to apply to them way before our deadline so you want to make sure you're reading that so you know what your specific program needs from you uh the application Parts typically they usually have an application form they usually want a transcript um you might need to give them a letter of recommendation or a personal statement um and then you want to make sure that you're following their application deadlines if you miss their application deadline there's usually nothing that I can do um so make sure that you apply by their deadlines refer to their instructions online to get the deadline information and we always recommend applying as close to the USC deadline as possible what that means is if you have a program that's selective meaning you there's a chance students might not get in you should apply as soon as possible sometimes an application like right now sometimes an application isn't going to open until after the USC deadline we recommend you apply as soon as possible as close to the USC deadline as possible you must be accepted by both USC d I and the host program to be fully accepted for passports and student visas like I said don't wait to start your application to apply for or renew your passport if you know you want to study abroad just go take care of it now if you don't have a passport apply early so you have it within six months before your program starts um passport times for a while they were really really really long I think they're a little better now but they're still not great um and it costs a lot of money to expedite it it's like double the cost of a passport if you have to get it expedited so just take care of it as soon as possible if you have a passport check the expiration date and renew it ASAP so that way you have it in hand by the time you have to apply for the program for student visas not all programs are going to require student visas uh sometimes they have different requirements like it's a tourist visa sometimes you don't need anything it all depends for some countries that application process is long Spain and Italy I know for sure are long um it can be up to two and a half months for some programs the consulate May hold your Visa with application in the process that means that your passport is surrendered you will not have your passport while it is in process that means that international travel might not be possible while your visa application is processing so if don't plan for winter or summer break international travel unless you know that application timeline and for DACA or TPS talk to your USC or USC immigration clinic at least nine months in advance because study abroad might not be possible you want to make sure that you're within what's going to be good for you if you want to go on a faculty Le program there are May Masters um problems without passports you want to check it check it with all of their stuff and they also sometimes have other summer programs except for Cambridge which is ours and if you do want to talk to them you can go on their website d. usc.edu flp or you could email them flp dn. usc.edu for the maym Masters all of the faculty-led programs it's the faculty that chooses where they're going what they're doing so if it's a question about like the process of it you can ask them but if you have a question about a May master that you saw and you're really interested in it's a good idea to talk to the professor directly because they're the one that plans and and does everything all right so next steps I would think about your personal goals and your academic goals they're both important I know we talk a lot about academics because you are studying abroad you're doing school stuff but your personal goals are important too in determining where you're going to be happy where you go so think about excuse me think about your personal goals think about what cultures and places and languages are interesting to you think about um where do you see yourself what type of culture what type of vibe of a place do you want to spend time in because a sem is a long time or a year is a long time think about your academic goals how can studying off-
