Hello friends, today we are starting a new series on synthesis of sentences. In this video, we will learn what is synthesis of a sentence and its different types. Then we will learn how to combine two simple sentences into one simple sentence with examples. Finally, I will give you an exercise to practice.
So without further ado, let's get started. What is the synthesis of a sentence? Synthesis of a sentence means the combination of two or more simple sentences into one sentence.
This one sentence could be a simple sentence, compound sentence or a complex sentence. And the meaning of this sentence should be identical to the individual sentences. Let me give you an example. He saw the police.
He ran away. These are two simple sentences. Now, how would you combine them into one simple sentence? Combining these two simple sentences, I have created one simple sentence in this way.
Seeing the police, he ran away. Notice that this simple sentence is having only one finite verb and one subject. And the word seeing is a present participle here.
This is one of the way in which we can combine two simple sentences into one simple sentence. And this entire process is called the Synthesis of a sentence. Now, let's learn all the ways to combine two simple sentences into one simple sentence.
There are seven ways of achieving it. 1. Verb We can convert one of the finite verbs into a non-finite verb using a participle. or infinitive.
Let's learn how to combine the sentences using participle. We can use this technique when we are talking about two actions done by the same subject. If the gap between the two actions is significantly less, we use present participle.
Else, we use perfect participle. Let's look into an example where present participle is used. Rohan saw a lion Rohan ran away.
Here, as immediately after seeing the lion, Rohan started running, so we have used the present participle seeing here. So the sentence will be, seeing a lion, Rohan ran away. Let's look into an example where perfect participle is used.
He played cricket. He went to the office. Here, after playing cricket, Rohan would have taken some time to get ready for office.
As there is a gap between the two events, so we will use the perfect participle, having played here. The final sentence will be, having played cricket, he went to the office. Now, let's learn how to combine sentences using infinitives.
Rohan ran fast, he wanted to get first prize. Using infinitives, we can combine these sentences in this way. Rohan ran fast to get first prize. Here, to get is an infinitive. Let's look into one more example.
He is very tired. He cannot run. Using infinitives, we can combine in this way. He is too tired to run.
Here, to run is used as an infinitive. So, in this way, with the help of non-finite verbs, we can achieve synthesis into a simple sentence. Let's look into the next way.
Number 2. Using Adjective Now, let's learn how to combine simple sentences using adjective. I saw an elephant. The elephant was a giant. Here, giant is describing the elephant. So, we can write the sentence in this way.
I saw a giant elephant. Here, giant is used as an adjective. Let's look into next example.
I found my wallet. It was lost. Combining the sentences, it becomes, I found my lost wallet. Here, lost is used as an adjective. And with this word, we were able to combine these sentences.
So in this way, with the help of adjectives, we can achieve synthesis into a simple sentence. Let's look into the next way. Number three, noun in apposition.
We can use noun in apposition to do synthesis. into a simple sentence. Let's look into an example to understand it. I went to Gandhinagar.
Gandhinagar is the capital of Gujarat. Using noun in opposition, we can combine the sentence in this way. I went to Gandhinagar, the capital of Gujarat. Here, the capital of Gujarat is called noun in opposition as this noun is giving more information about the noun Gandhinagar.
Let's look into one more example of this kind. Rameshesh is my friend. Rameshesh lives in my neighborhood. Using noun in opposition, we can combine the sentence in this way.
Rameshesh, my friend. lives in my neighborhood. Here, my friend is the noun in apposition.
So, in this way, with the help of nouns in apposition, we can achieve synthesis into a simple sentence. Let's look into the next way. Number four, using preposition.
We can use preposition or prepositional phrase to do synthesis into a simple sentence. For example, I made my best efforts. I could not pass the exam.
Using the preposition INSPITE OF, we can combine the sentence in this way. In spite of my best efforts, I could not pass the exam. Let's look into one more example of this kind. I bought a pencil.
I gave 20 rupees for it. Using preposition FOR, we can combine the sentence in this way. I bought a pencil for 20 rupees. So, in this way, with the help of prepositions, we can achieve synthesis into a simple sentence. Let's look into the next way.
Number 5. Using Adverbs We can use an adverb or adverbal phrase to do synthesis into a simple sentence. For example, Virat Kohli is a great cricketer. It is certain. Using the adverb certainly, we can combine the sentence in this way. Virat Kohli is certainly a great cricketer.
The sunset, the boys had not finished the game. Using the adverbial phrase, by sunset, we can combine the sentence in this way. The boys had not finished the game by sunset. So, in this way, with the help of adverbs, we can achieve synthesis into a simple sentence.
Let's look into the next way. Number 6. Using conjunction. We can use conjunction to do synthesis into a simple sentence. For example, Ramesh played cricket, Shyam played cricket. Using conjunction and.
we can combine the sentence in this way. Ramesh and Shyam played cricket. Let's look into one more example of this kind.
Ajay can read. Ajay can write. Combining them into one simple sentence, it becomes Ajay can read and write. So in this way, with the help of conjunction, we can achieve synthesis into a simple sentence. Let's look into the next way.
Number 7. Nominative absolute. Using nominative absolute, we can do synthesis into a simple sentence. When two simple sentences are given in such a way that the first sentence shows the cause and the second sentence shows the result. And both the simple sentences are having different subjects. Then, with the help of having plus verbs third form, having been plus verbs third form or being, we can convert the first sentence into a nominative absolute.
Let's look into an example to understand it. The teacher entered the class, the students became silent. Combining these two sentences using having plus verbs third form, we can write in this way. The teacher having entered the class, the students became silent.
Let's look into an example where having been is used. The work was done, we went back home. Here As the first sentence is in passive voice, we will be using having been here.
So the sentence will be the work having been done, we went back home. Let's look into an example where being is used. It is a holiday, we will not go to school.
In case is, am, are, was, were are there in an active voice, then the word being is used. So the sentence will be created in this way. It being a holiday.
we will not go to school. In this way, with the help of nominative absolute, we can achieve synthesis into a simple sentence. So, these are the seven different ways to do synthesis of two or more simple sentences into one simple sentence.
The trick of remembering these seven ways is that six of them are parts of speech. Noun, adjective, verb, adverb, preposition, conjunction and the one being Nominative Absolute I hope now you will be able to do synthesis into a simple sentence. So, let me give you an exercise to practice. Combine the following simple sentences into one simple sentence. He saw a snake.
He ran quickly. Jai went to Delhi. Delhi is the capital of India.
Ankita saw a dog. The dog was barking. Hints are also given for your reference.
