Lecture on Installing Duo with Coach Ryan Swingle

Introduction to Duo

  • What is Duo?
    • Downhill, fast-hitting gap scheme
    • Double team-based play
    • No puller involved
    • Aim is to get vertical displacement of down linemen
    • Move the line of scrimmage downfield to the defense
    • Deliver first-level defenders into the laps of linebackers

Key Characteristics of Duo

  • Comparison to Inside Zone:
    • Similar to gap schemes like Power and Counter
    • Both sides block like in gap schemes but no pulling
    • High-level overview: a double team and vertical displacement
    • Run ideally from under center or pistol position

Running Back Reads in Duo

  • Anchor Key and Peripheral Key:
    • Anchor Key: Mike Linebacker
    • Peripheral Key: Will Linebacker
    • Aim to run from under center or pistol to get RB downhill
    • Sidecar position is less ideal
    • Running backs should be at 7.5 yards depth

Techniques and Aiming Points

  • Running Back Aiming Points:
    • Under Center: Heels at 7.5 yards
    • Pistol: 2.5 yards behind QB, still at 7.5 yards
    • Gun: Toes to the heels of QB, crotch splits outside leg of play side guard
    • Drop step footwork, aiming point outside hip of play side guard

Blocking Calls and Line Combinations

  • Terminology for Blocking:
    • Ace: Center and play side guard double team to Mike
    • Doom: Play side tackle and guard double team to Mike
    • Tram: Play side tackle and tight end double team to Mike
    • Quad: Tight end or wing/receiver in condensed split double team
    • Lane: One-on-one block on front side (e.g., guard vs. 2i)
    • Sig: Center and back side guard double team to backside linebacker
    • Secure: Center securing A gap to minus one linebacker (Will)
    • Fan: Abort double teams to walked-up linebacker threatening off the edge

Diagramming Duo Plays

  • Versus Different Fronts:
    • Five-man front
    • Four-man front
    • Three-man front
    • Use of line calls like Ace, Doom, Tram, Quad, and Lane

Reading Defenders

  • Running Back's Primary Visual Anchor:
    • Eyes locked on Mike Linebacker
    • Peripheral key used if Mike moves outside
    • Bend read outside gap, cram inside gap, or bounce out wide

Blocking Adjustments

  • Working Against Movements and Stunts:
    • Center/Gaurd adjust to 2i, 3-techniques, and tilted shades
    • Gallop technique for double teams: Vertical engagement
    • Reading slants and adjustments dynamically

Examples and Film Analysis

  • NFL and College Footage:
    • Examples from Rams’ Super Bowl run
    • Hamilton College footage for various formations and blocking schemes
    • Analyzing successful and unsuccessful plays
