Hello everybody. Welcome back to my YouTube channel. My name is Arian Lagringa and in today's video we are going to learn about slang words in English specifically from my generation Gen Z. So what is slang? Slang words and phrases are very casual and their meaning is completely different from what the individual words mean. For example, if I say keep your cool, that does not mean to stay cold. It literally just means to stay calm. Slang is always changing, too. So, some terms like what's up, which means hello in English, has been used so much that it's actually an idiom, which means the phrase is totally different from its meaning. So, what's up, does not mean what's up, but instead it means hello. But other sling is just trendy, popping up from music or movies just for a little while. Just be careful though because using trendy sling in a formal place like a job interview, well, you might not come across as professional. All right, now let's hop into the video and learn some of the most common slang words that you'll hear from the younger generation or just on social media. First up, we have salty. Do you guys know what it means? It doesn't mean that people like to put salt on their food. No, instead it means someone might get upset or frustrated over a small thing. For example, my friend got salty because I didn't text him back. Hey, you're looking a little salty today. What's got you so annoyed? Can you believe it? I just paid $20 for a car wash and a bird pooped on my car. I'm super salty. The next sling word is thirsty. It doesn't mean you're thirsty for water or for a drink. No, this just means that someone is very desperate for attention. For example, if my friend posts a lot of selfies online, I might say, "She's posting a lot of selfies. She's thirsty." Remember the guy from the bar? He was being super thirsty. Why are you always desperate for so much attention? Are you thirsty? Then there's ghost, but as a verb. To ghost someone is to stop all communication with them. So, you don't text them, you don't call them, and you don't reply to them. Nothing. It's like you suddenly disappeared. For example, I thought we had a good date, but then he ghosted me. And this just means he completely stopped messaging me. Let me know down below if you guys have been ghosted. It's him again. He's being super intense. I'm gonna ghost him. I really miss him. Have you ever had someone completely ghost you? A situationship is a fun one. It's a romantic relationship, but it isn't clearly defined. So, you guys might be more than friends, but there isn't a label on it. So, you're not boyfriend or girlfriend either. For example, he's not my boyfriend. We're just in a situationship, which means we're romantically involved. Yes, of course. But there isn't a label on it, so he's not my boyfriend. My brother's in a situationship. But now he's going to ask her to be his girlfriend. They're going to make it official. I want my man to take the extra step. He's not my boyfriend just yet, but we're more than friends. We're in a situationship. Now, let's talk about low key. Low-key is a slang term and it's all about being subtle and understated. When you describe something as low-key, it's not a big deal or it might even be secretive. For example, you might hear someone say, "I'm having a lowkey birthday party." This means it's casual, it's a small party, and it's not a huge celebration. I'm low-key obsessed with vacuuming my house, and I've tried all of these vacuums. Is that a bad thing? I can low-key fit into kids clothes, which is a bit impressive, but a little bit weird, but it's okay because the deals are really good. The next word is slay. To slay means to do something extremely well or very impressive. For example, she slayed her presentation. And that just means she did it very well and it was super impressive. It was fantastic. Slay. I'll try to walk across the rail. Whoa, I did it. Slay. Did you see my sister's dance routine last night? She totally slayed. The next slang word is bet. Bet is a quick way to say I agree yes or okay. So if someone says Ariana, will you be there at 10? And if I respond with bet, that just means okay, I'll be there. Want to get some gum? Bet. Okay. Do you want to get some coffee right now? Bet. All right. So learning all this slang is a great way to feel more confident speaking English and avoid those awkward or cringe moments. Now, let's get back to the video. The next word is busten. Have you guys ever heard about that word? Busan is used for food that tastes really, really good. For example, this cheesecake is busting. It tastes extremely good. Busting. This combination of French fries and a sundae is busting. This frozen pizza is absolutely busting. The next slang phrase that we use a lot in my generation is slide into the DMs. Do you guys know what that means? DM is an abbreviation and it stands for direct message. So to slide into the DMs is actually a flirtatious way to get someone's attention where you send a message, a private message to them. For example, I'm going to slide into his DMs and see if he wants to hang out. This skateboard store slid into my DMs for a collaboration with me, but I don't know how to skateboard. Someone slid into my DMs and he wants to take me out tonight. Nah, I'm busy. The next slang word is Gucci. When you hear the word Gucci, what do you think of? Well, you might think of the designer store behind me, Gucci. But in fact, Gucci means okay. Everything is good. For example, don't worry about it. You're Gucci. My friend stood me up. But we're Gucci. It's not her fault because her car broke down. Everything's okay. I totally forgot to buy my dad a gift. Oh my gosh. But it's Gucci. He likes money, so I'll just give him money. A gift card. The next sling word is cringe. When I say this word, what do you think it means? Cringe is used to describe something that's really awkward or embarrassing. For example, that old video of me is cringe. And this just means that I feel uncomfortable because the video is super embarrassing. The girl sitting next to my table is crying. That's so cringe. This Halloween skeleton dog prop is so cringe next to my puppy. I can't even look at it. The next word is to stand. To stand something means to be a very very big fan or become obsessed with someone or something. For example, I stand Harry Potter. I am obsessed with Harry Potter. I stand watching movies at the movie theater. I stand cities like this one where you don't have to pay for parking. Everything is free. The next word is mid. What do you think this means? It just means that something is not great, just average, or a bit disappointing. Chicago is mid. I don't feel like it's the greatest city, but it's not the worst city. So, I'll say it's mid. That mural is so mid. I mean, they can do so much better. Come look at that one. It looks a lot more realistic and the colors are just more vibrant. I'm trying to find the best card for my sister's birthday. This one says, "Happy birthday." Let's see what's inside. Happiness all year. This card is pretty mid. Let's check out the next one. Great big hugs with lots of love. Oh, when you open it, the wings spread out. Wow, this one's really cool. The very last slang word is simp. Do you know what this means? A simp is a person who tries way too hard or does too much for a person they have a crush on or they like romantically. For example, he is singing so hard for her means he is going overboard and trying to impress her. My friend is singing so hard for his crush. Yesterday he bought her a necklace and tonight they're going to this fancy restaurant. He always leaves a like and a comment on all of her pictures and she doesn't even follow him back. What a s.
